Syston Takes Silver at East Midlands in Bloom

After a year away from the East Midlands in Bloom Competition the judges welcomed the town back and praised them for their good work.

The result was that Syston Town Council and Volunteers scooped a Silver Award in the 2017 East Midlands in Bloom Awards, announced at a special awards event

in held in Lincolnshire during September.

There were two special Judges Awards: one for the Syston Cemetery, for the high standard of maintenance and strong working partnership between Paul and volunteers. The other was for The Merton Primary School for their gardening and planting at The Gables and Syston Day Nurseries.

Syston Town Council expresses a huge thank you to the staff, volunteers and businesses that contributed towards the entry and for helping to make Syston a beautiful town.

The planning now starts for next year and the hope that more local businesses and volunteer groups will become involved to help the town achieve a coveted gold award!

Rebecca Ann Hair and Beauty Studio The Stn originally met Rebecca when she first opened her business over three years ago in Syston. After a short period of time she moved to her current premises in Queniborough where she now has a large salon offering hair, beauty, make-up and nails with a team of seven, including beauty therapists.

This bubbly young woman told us that her salon was a finalist in the National Hair and Beauty awards for 2017, and although didn't win, Rebecca was thrilled to have reached the finals as a new business up against some really well established salons from across the country.

An Evening Not to Be Missed!

A ‘Last Night of the Proms’ concert is coming to the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Syston on Saturday 28th October at 7.30pm.

Join us at St Peter and St Paul’s church for a fun evening with Syston Brass Band, various singers and other musical turns. Bring your flag to wave!

There will be the opportunity for lots of audience participation during the evening, some surprises, and a truly traditional second half. Refreshments will be available at the interval at the bar.

We like to have a theme for the first half of the concert, so as well as celebrating Vera Lynn’s 100th birthday the band will be playing some Glenn Miller music, because Glenn Miller and his orchestra received the first ever gold disc exactly 75 years ago. We know our audiences like to join in the singing too, so there will be plenty of scope for that. Sue Smith, (our female soloist) will be singing some of Vera Lynn’s songs and our male vocalist Mark Hopkinson will be singing some classic 1940s songs such as ‘Don’t sit under the apple tree

with anyone else but me’ and ‘You are my sunshine.’

Pre-war, the band had had great success with ‘Moonlight Serenade’ and ‘In the Mood’ and these tunes were included in the repertoire of Glenn’s military band, which was known as ‘the Band of the American Expeditionary Force’.

The band had a great many hits including ‘When they sound the last all-clear,’ and ‘When the lights go on all over the world,’ and Syston Brass Band will be playing several of these nostalgic pieces.

Queniborough W.I. Autumn seems extra early this year, so to ease us through to the onset of winter, Brenda Featherstone joined us to create some of her wonderful farmhouse cookery. What a joy!, eight scrumptious dishes for our delectation that included harvest fruit pudding, chicken and tomato crumble, pineapple and mandarin cheesecake, all of which she prepared concurrently with the other five dishes. What a cook, especially as we were able to sample all eight dishes. Along the way she regaled us with chat about farm life, her family and how the motorway had affected life for them when it came through their land some years ago What an enjoyable evening and next month we look forward to Michael Peachey on the subject of oil painting with some have-a-go audience participation.

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”.

Let me first of all apologize for saying in my September article that my climbing French beans, although producing a mass of growth and small violet and white flowers had not set any beans. One week after I had written the article beans started to set and within a couple of weeks we were gathering flat, yellow beans that were not only stringless, but also very tasty.

I have since found out that this climbing French bean produces its beans almost a month after my ‘St George’ runner beans.

For many years I have grown three varieties of Crocosmia, and Crocosmia masonorum is by far the largest and oldest clump. Its scarlet flowers open during August and last into late October. The flowers not only add attraction to the late summer and autumn garden, but also provide bees and other insects with pollen and nectar before the onset of winter. Last year a seedling appeared, see picture above, in one border some 10 feet (3m) away and this appears to have flowers slightly larger, but the same colour of C. Masonorum, but as there are already numerous varieties of Crocosmia available it would not be worth introducing.

During October 2016 I purchased a shrub of Vitex agnus castus, pictured above right, whose common name is

‘Chaste Tree’. This deciduous shrub is native to the Southern Mediterranean and central Asia and as a consequence it needs a very well drained soil in full sun. In my garden during September and October it produces its slender spire like racemes of pale violet fragrant flowers on the tips of its current year’s growth.

I lightly prune this shrub during late spring to keep it in shape.

My ‘Non Stop Begonia’s, pictured below, which I grew in the spring from plugs, started to flower during June and are still in flower. Vi loves the bright red forms, so I planted a number in narrow troughs using half and half Multipurpose compost and John Innes no2 compost. I also planted a number in a border, but the ones in troughs are producing more flowers, I suppose this is due to me feeding and watering them more readily.

During August we visited my daughter Louise and husband James for five

days and during that time we visited seven nurseries/garden centres.

Louise and myself for plants, James for tea and cake and Vi for both. I always say that I shall not buy anymore plants, but came away with four more to put in my garden.

As an old Daphne had died at the rear of my Japanese garden, I had purchased a plant of Brachyglottis ‘Walbertons Silver Dormouse’, pictured above, to plant in its place. This is a lovely compact, evergreen shrub with silvery-grey foliage and yellow daisy-like flowers during the summer. This will eventually grow 3 feet (90cm) tall, but I shall prune it to keep it much smaller.

When I first joined a nursery in 1943 Brachyglottis went under the name of Senicio and there is a large shrub of the form ‘Sunshine’ in the border fronting Syston library. By now all of my Buddleja davidi forms and hybrids will have had their dead flower spikes cut off to prevent them from seeding around my garden and as soon as they have finished flowering I prune them back by half their annual growth, then in the spring I cut them back to within 12/18 inches (30/45cm) from ground level. Even when pruned hard back they will often grow 6 feet (1.8m) in a season.

My leaf vac has once more come out of the garden shed to vacuum up the leaves that are covering my lawn and rockeries. The shredded leaves are spread over the rear of my borders as mulch and by the spring the worms will have pulled the shredded leaves into the ground.

Twyford Guild of Artists Exhibition

Syston Has a New Public Health Local Area Coordinator Local Area coordination is a preventative initiative that started in Leicestershire in July 2015. The initiative helps people and communities to achieve their vision of a good life. It also helps prevent people from reaching and returning to a crisis.

A Local Area Coordinator looks for opportunities and natural connections within communities that enable people and places to grow. The support offered is person centred and nontime restricted.

We work with local and country wide organisations and services to promote opportunities for people who may be at risk (vulnerable) or trying to cope with daily life due to their age, disability or low level mental health.

A Local Area Coordinator can provide short term support, providing information or signposting longer term support whereby they will take time to understand a person’s strengths and aspirations, help to set targets and provide practical ways of achieving goals and visions for a good life.

National Heritage Weekend As part of this weekend Friends of St Peter & St Paul’s Church arranged for the church to be open on 9th September for anyone who wanted to explore this beautiful Grade 1 listed building.

Many people did just that!

During the day there were conducted tours of the church pointing out many of the details that are not usually spotted.

Also a showing of old pictures of Syston.

Refreshments were provided in the hall; light lunches, some delicious cakes, tea and coffee.

In addition there was a craft activity table for younger visitors.

Although there was no charge for entry, many people made donations and one particularly generous donation was made to Friends whose aim is to improve facilities the back of church for a disabled toilet and kitchen area.

Anne told us about how she was invited to be one of the 91 men and 91 women who were to be presented with Maunday money by the Queen at Leicester Cathedral.

Anne expressed her delight and surprise at being invited to this event. She was able to remember this wonderful day in great detail.

After the talk, during refreshments, Anne was willing to answer questions.

As part of the Friend’s event the ringers opened the tower for people to climb the stairs, first to see the room where the bells are pulled, then to the bell room to watch what happens when a bell is rung and for the very intrepid, more steps to get out onto the roof! Sadly the last few people were unable to go onto the roof as the rain had made the sloping roof unsafe.

Ride and Stride for Leicestershire Historic Churches Trust The bike ride for this charity took place on 9th September. Terry Farmer was the sole Participant this year! He visited 17 churches in the area on his ride and, by good fortune, managed to avoid the rain!

He raised at least £175, half of which will come back to St Peter & St Pauls.

Harvest Celebrations The main service on October 1st will be the Harvest Festival. This will be at 10.30am. It will be an all age service with special activities for the children.

In the afternoon the church will be open for visitors to see the amazing decorations from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

Last Night of the Proms Concert We are greatly looking forward to the Proms Concert on 28th October at 7.30pm when we will once again be wonderfully entertained by Syston Band and singers and have a chance to join in and wave a flag or two!

NEW BARKBY WI Mrs S. Franklin, President of New Barkby WI welcomed members and friends to the September meeting.

Congratulations were given to everyone who helped to create handicrafts for the New Barkby's stall at the Syston Carnival with a successful financial result. Speaker for the evening was Frances Benton, with a ‘Passion for Pearls’. Having learned about pearls from her grandmother, Frances became interested from a young age. Over the years she has done a lot of research and collected many examples. She has learnt how to string and knot them and is a tutor at the W.I.'s Denman College.

Simulated pearls which have been manufactured began in Japan in the 1890's, to be used in costume jewellery. Natural ones are when a parasite gets into a bivalve mollusc such as an oyster or a mussel and natural layers of tissue build up to cover it, to give it nacre, thus a pearl is formed. One pearl could command a price of several hundred's of thousands of pounds!

In our clear British waters, some mussels might live for an average of 150 years. Out of 2000 varieties, only 20 would make a pearl. Members were able to handle a variety of necklaces and afterwards there was an opportunity to look at a display of empty oyster and mussel cases and a chance to purchase jewellery.

Mrs A. Montague gave the vote of thanks for an entertaining and informative talk. The competition was won by Mrs V. Cobb with a piece of sheet music ‘A String of Pearls’ accompanied with a Pearl necklace.

The raffle prize winners were Mrs L. Chapman who won a pair of earrings donated by the speaker and Mrs M.

Sewell with a toiletries gift set. The tea hostesses were Mrs D. Batson and Mrs B. Jameson.

The October meeting will take place on Wednesday 4th at 7.30pm in the Syston Community Centre, with musical entertainment from 'After 8 Quartet'. Visitors welcome to attend.

25,000 Reminders to Be Sent Out over Electoral Register Charnwood Borough Council will be delivering around 25,000 reminder forms to properties which have not responded to the annual check of voter details.

Every year the Council must check its electoral register is up to date and letters are sent to all households asking people to confirm the details or inform the Council of any changes.

So far, 47,000 people have responded to the letters, called household enquiry forms.

Geoff Parker, the Council’s Electoral Registration Officer, said: “Firstly I’d like to thank everyone who has already responded.

For those who receive a reminder form, please ensure you reply to us either to confirm that the details are correct, or to let us know about changes such as people who have moved away or new people who need to be added to the voters register. Responses can be made by phone, online or by post using the pre-paid envelope provided. Details of 16 and 17-yearolds can also be added now so that they can vote as soon as they turn 18. It is a legal requirement to respond, and dealing with the form promptly will avoid us having to visit your property and door-knock to get the required details.”

The Electoral Registration Officer needs the information to be able to publish a complete and accurate Electoral Register on Friday 1st December each year.

Cllr E. Vardy opened the meeting by explaining why the council had called the meeting and acknowledged the large turnout and the depth of feeling in the town towards the current situation. He went on to explain the situation with the roundabout and that the council had invited LCC Highways to attend the meeting but they had declined.

All comments were recorded at the meeting and will be sent to highways along with STC comments to try and persuade LCC and highways that the people of Syston do not feel safe with the current layout, and that highways have made a mistake that needs to be rectified before someone is seriously injured or has fatal consequences.

Cllr E. Vardy thanked the residents for attending and giving their support to the council and that they will continue to press for a solution which works for everyone.

Dear Syston folk, I have written before about this and I would like to know again what can be done?

The cycle walkway between East Goscote and Syston is greatly used by pedestrians and people on bikes. In fact, school children use this in great numbers twice daily.

My concern again, is with the overgrown hedge at the Queniborough junction with Melton Road.

Pedestrians, people on bikes, and specifically children and young people are being put at risk by the overgrown hedge.

The signposted pedestrian/cycleway route sees a good wide path from East Goscote to Syston, but at the Queniborough Junction point, this path is reduced to one a-breast due to the overgrown hedge.

People have to use the few feet of path on the road-side putting them in touching distance of passing traffic - this traffic is travelling at speed. This is a heavily used bus route and buses being wide vehicles pose a specific danger.

My fear is that it's only a matter of time before a distracted school-child steps into the path of a vehicle due in-part to the un-maintained hedge.

What can be done about this? If nothing can be done I would question the suitability of the route for bike users and perhaps these signs should be removed?

Dear Editor, I was born in Syston and spent my infancy in St Peter's Street and in Broad Street. Sixty years ago Broad Street - at least in my memory always smelled of privet blossom, dusty sunshine and dry leaves. In those days we children spent a great deal of time exploring Syston brook. It was not then fully fenced off and so was easily accessible for the catching of tadpoles, minnows, sticklebacks and the like. We used to scramble down the banks just by the Masonic Hall, occasionally cutting ourselves on tin cans and glass - but I don't remember any real calamities.

Today the brook seems to attract a more exotic type of visitor. On Wednesday morning, 23rd August, I spotted what I am sure was a Snowy Egret fishing in the water, just below the Melton Road bridge. I have seen these beautiful birds in Egypt, dipping among the Nile lotuses, but never before in Syston; though I gather Egrets are now regular visitors to the UK. Has anyone else seen the Egret, or for that matter any other unusual bird life, in or around the Syston brook?

Dear Editor, I read with interest your article in the September edition concerning the Syston Masonic Hall.

I have always considered this building to be a unique, interesting, and good-looking piece of architecture which contributes much to Syston's heritage.

What a shame that it has to face such a disgraceful piece of wasteland in the heart of our town. It has been like this for far too long.

To me it has long been the biggest eyesore in Syston. Who owns it, and why do our Borough and County Council councillors not bring pressure to have this land sorted? They cannot fail to have noticed it.

Wanlip Sailing Club

The pace of life seems to be moving faster year-on-year, so what can we do to find a work/life balance or a retirement plan. Well down at Wanlip Sailing Club a sailing session is a great way to unwind, unless of course you’re ultra competitive and would prefer one of our racing sessions.

Either way, you can get some fresh air and go back to an era of community.

Following our recent Open Day, our club has so far had quite a successful year with more people wanting to reject technology and get back to challenging nature.

Sailing is really just people harnessing nature to get about on the water. But a sailing club is about getting about on the water and mastering that skill.

Every day is different with wind direction and wind strength varying, as well as being part of a community.

Friendships are formed as well as friendly rivalry combined with social events. The social events are often an opportunity to raise money for a local or national charity.

So who can sail? Simply, anyone can sail young and old, you don’t need to be an Olympic athlete, just have a willing attitude.

Do you need a fat wallet? Not really, club membership is reasonable, the club has some boats that members can hire, but you can spend as much

as you want if you want, maybe your ambition is sail around the world!

Veterans Breakfast Club The Veterans Breakfast Club is a new venture springing up all across the United Kingdom, where Ex-Forces can meet for a couple of hours once a month to have a good old fry up and chew the fat with other veterans, or in the case of the Royal Navy have a good whinge.

New Season for OGs The new badminton season kicked off at Melton Mowbray Old Grammarians on Monday 4th September with the first club night at Long Field Academy in Melton starting at 8.00pm. Following an extremely successful 2016/17 season, the club will again be entering a range of teams in both the Leicestershire and Melton leagues and will also be holding junior and intermediate coaching classes from early October onwards.

On the approaching new season club captain Neil Hunt commented: “We have achieved a nice balance between providing enjoyable club nights and competitive league standard badminton and this is striking a chord with the local sports community. As always we will be looking to welcome new players to the club as well as ensuring badminton is promoted at junior and intermediate level via our relationship with local schools.
