Local School Awarded Outstanding which they are going to lead in a few weeks time. Although at the early stages, their enthusiasm for engaging the whole school was impressive with many different ideas being shared.

It was very enjoyable to spend some time with this group and we hope their assembly is successful!

St Peter and St Paul’s Academy has been awarded as Outstanding in a recent Inspection.

The school was inspected in September by the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).

The last inspection in 2012 awarded the school as Good, so they are overjoyed to achieve Outstanding this time.

The inspectors stated that the Christian ethos of the school is deeply embedded in all aspects of school life, resulting in learners having a very good understanding of how Christian values impact on their own achievement and behaviour. The children were complimented for being polite, respectful and well-mannered displaying excellent behaviour and attitudes towards learning.

Armistice Parade Sunday 13th November The Stn visited one of the lunchtime clubs that underpins the ethos of the school, the CYC (Christian Youth Club), led by Mrs Mugglestone, see our photograph above. The club is made up of years 4 and 5 children, who meet each week on a Thursday.

They talked with great enthusiasm for the club and the school’s values of respect, honesty and perseverance.

Syston Mind Shop Holds a ‘Crafternoon’ for Better Mental Health

Both Tony and Yvonne Holland, pictured below, residents of Brookside, Barkby have recently celebrated 'special' birthdays in August and September this year.

As a special present to both of them their great friend, Gary Bown of Mind Supporters in Syston Get Barkby, organized a helicopter flight Crafting to fund raise for Better Mental for them on Sunday 11th September.

His trip included a flight to see Lincoln Health Cathedral, and then on to Barnsdale Lodge for a spot of lunch, landing on the helipad. They returned to Sarah's Field next to Brookside, where they received a warm reception from friends and neighbours.

The Mind Shop Syston, Melton Road is holding a special ‘Crafternoon’ on Saturday 12th November. It’s being held at St Hildas Church, Lingdale, East Goscote, 2.00pm to 4.00pm and will help raise money for the one in four people that live with mental health.

Dawn, a volunteer at Mind, said “We’re really hoping people will support us by getting involved with ‘crafternoon’, it’s a perfect excuse to spend time with family and friends and even better, it’s a great way to boost mental wellbeing.

It can be very rewarding and relaxing to create something from scratch.

Every penny raised will make a huge difference, just £21 could keep Minds Online Support Community, Elefriends, running for one hour.

Prices to take part will be £5 for adults and £3 for children, with a cream tea.

Plus a variety of craft demonstrations will take place on the day.

Peter Yellup runs and owns PJY Therapies, and has successfully run Grantham Acupuncture in Lincolnshire for the last 10 years where he has treated a wide range of health conditions; from back pain and sciatica to infertility issues, addictions, headaches and migraines.

It is a natural therapy that aims to treat the whole person; body, mind and emotions and has no side effects, unlike many every day and commonly used prescription medication.

In essence acupuncture looks to re-balance the body and in doing so helps the body heal and repair itself.

The question that I often get asked is whether or not acupuncture hurts?

And the answer is no. Sometimes a

slight sharpness can be felt for a brief second or two as the needles are inserted but nearly everyone finds the treatments calming and very relaxing.

Acupuncture is safe and has no side effects and only single use, sterilised disposable needles are used.

Typically a session lasts one hour, with the needles remaining in place for around 20-30 minutes. As part of the diagnosis a number of questions would be asked around your current health and lifestyle, your pulse would be taken and also I would ask to look at your tongue, which all helps to formulate a diagnosis. A course of treatment would typically be around six sessions, however this is always hard to predict as everyone is different.

A Very Special Remembrance Book of Syston Soldiers who Died During World War Two on Display in Syston Library in November.

As you may already know, the Friends of St Peter and St Paul's Church, Syston have been collecting photos and information about as many of the Syston servicemen and women who are commemorated on our war memorial for the past couple of years. The photos have now been used in a memorial book that will form a valuable historic document and a copy of the book will be on display at Syston Library for the month of November.

The album will be dedicated at the 11.30am Remembrance Day service in the Parish Church this year, which is after the service around the war memorial, and after that copies of the album will be kept permanently in the Parish Church and Methodist Church as well as the library.

The Friends of St Peter and St Paul's Church are indebted to local historian Cynthia Brown of Leicester for undertaking the research that was needed to complete the memorial book, and to Ray Young of Syston Local History Group for binding the albums.

Syston grandmother Theresa did a sponsored swim to raise funds for local charity, Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children. The charity helps one of her grandsons, Garrat.

She has raised over £118 by swimming 40 lengths of the South Charnwood swimming pool. Our picture above shows her as she turned to start another length.

NEW BARKBY WI Vice President, Mrs A Montague welcomed members and visitors to New Barkby’s October meeting.

She thanked everyone who had helped during the recent group meeting at which New Barkby were the host institute at Barkby Village Hall. The speaker there was Rosemary Hughes and friend Peta, both florists who prepared all the floral displays for Richard III’s internment in Leicester Cathedral.

The New Barkby meeting had Mr Terry Greengrass and colleague Ken as

speakers on the topic of Leicester movie makers, a local group who make films, mostly documentaries, using camcorders.

Members were shown a variety of films, some with voice-overs, of breath taking scenic locations, with wildlife and sculptures, through woods, Yorkshire dales, Abbotsbury Swannery, and abroad to Fjords of Norway and the city of Stavanger and its fishing industry.

The finale was ‘The Return of the King’ capturing the events of 2015, when King Richard III’s internment took place in Leicester Cathedral. There was an amazing display of 8,000 candles in Jubilee Square and the celebrations ended with a magnificent firework flourish.

The Leicester Movie Makers presented all these short films, set to appropriate music in just one hour. They won a competition for their work in 2015. A very entertaining evening.

The vote of thanks was given by Mrs A. Wright. The competition was won by Mrs B. Jameson and the raffle by Mrs P. Warren.

The tea hostesses were Mrs L. Bennison and Mrs E. Loder assisted by Mrs B. Gamble and Mrs P. Warren.

The next meeting will be Wednesday 2nd November, 7.30pm at Syston Community Centre. Visitors will be welcomed.

Help Your Immune Systom

As winter approaches and the coughs, cold and flu symptoms appear, it’s now the time to build up your immune system!

As always please seek medical advice before taking any herbal remedies if you have any condition which is of concern.

There are a lot of remedies to assist the immune system - In this article we are going to consider the following: Vitamin C, Zinc, Echinacea, Elderberry and Plantago.

Vitamin C is often called the master immune nutrient, because of its essential role in immune function. Many studies have shown vitamin C to reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms, and some research suggests it may reduce the risk of catching a cold (although results of prevention studies have been mixed). Among other relevant effects, vitamin C increases white blood cell function, interferon production and antibody activity. Vitamin C requirements are higher during infection.

Zinc is another important immune nutrient.

The lozenge form of zinc has been shown to significantly reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms. When the lozenges are dissolved in the mouth, the zinc appears to possess a direct, local anti-viral activity. This benefit is in addition to the fact that zinc is a primary nutrient in immune function, particularly due to its beneficial effects on thymus gland function and white blood cell function.

Echinacea (echinacea augusfi Folia, echinacea purpurea) Echinacea's active compounds enhance immune function due to various mechanisms of action such as; increasing the production of white blood cells (when they are low); stimulating activation of

white blood cells and boosting the production of various immunepotentiating compounds. It is considered to be the prime remedy for the immune system and this view has been supported by extensive research.

It is best taken in a maintenance dose over a period of time to improve immune function. Although it appears that echinacea is most effective taken at the onset of an infection, if the herb is to be used long-term many experts suggest that a one to two week break be taken every eight weeks or so. Do not take if you are taking immunosuppressant medication or if you are hypersensitive to Echinacea preparations.

Elderberry (sambucus nigra). These beautiful dark purple/black berries are well known as a delicious ingredient in drinks, providing a dense source of nutrients alongside the tart and stimulating taste.

Black elderberries contain large quantities of flavonoid glycosides and anthocyan glycosides, plus essential oils, vitamin C, B complex and minerals. It is a good source of antioxidants. Like Echinacea, it can stop viruses from spreading from an infected cell to other cells. It can't stop viruses infecting cells in the first place, as Echinacea can. The two herbs can work well together.

Plantago, also known as Lance Leaf Plantain, it contains mucilage, tannins and silicic acid. It is probably the mucilage which contributes most to the action of the plant. Plantago has the ability to reduce the amount of inflammation present in the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, so helping catarrh, sinusitis as well as earache, ear infections or glue ear and tinnitus.

It has been noted that plantain juice will not go mouldy during storage despite large amounts of sugar being present.

This has been found to be due to the presence of naturally occurring antibiotics.

A Fresh New Look for a Long Established Town Dental Practice After 40 years of being known as Syston Dental Practice, Liz Butters, principle dentist has re-launched the practice as Watermead Dental.

“It was time to re-fresh the appearance of the practice along with introducing some new technologies to make sure we are offering the best possible experience for all our patients”, said Liz. Syston Dental Practice started in the mid 70s, where the original partners were linked to Oakdale Dental Practice in Leicester. Liz joined the practice 20 years ago, initially as an associate, and subsequently became a partner before taking over the practice in 2005.

Liz is not the only person who has a long history here, between her and the other associates, Wendy Seaton and Nisha Pattani and their Hygienists Mandy and Lydia they have clocked up 100 years of service. In fact, loyalty seems to be a common theme at the practice as the other members of staff have also been here for many years as have the patients, “We still have many patients who have been coming here right from the beginning” said Liz. “Irrespective of what your dental history may be, we are here to make sure your dental needs are completely satisfied and your expectations are exceeded. This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”.

During October Caroline, who helps me with the weeding in my garden said, you must come and look at what I have found growing in your bed of Heuchera’s. I was intrigued as to what she had found and to my surprise, as she parted the leaves there was a giant puffball, which Caroline informed me had the Latin name of Calvatia gigantia.

The white giant puffballs can grow as large as a football and when young are said to be edible, but I must say I never fancied trying one. In previous years my Nerine bowdenii ‘Mark Fenwick’ has looked magnificent during October and in mid-November. However, this year the wet spring and early summer caused a number of the older bulbs to rot, by older I mean 20 years - that is a very good life span for any bulb. I spent some time sorting out the rotten bulbs and now with a few less bulbs it is once more in flower, but with only 15 lower stems, even so, it is putting on a very attractive autumn and early winter show of pink flowers.

On the subject of bulbs, during early October I went along to the Alpine Garden Society show at Loughborough and there amongst the alpines I came across Ledebouria socialis, pictured below, which like my Nerine has bulbs that sit almost on top of the soil. What attracted me to this plant was its lance shaped small leaves, which are silver spotted with dark green. Its flowers are a light purple and at first sight resemble a tiny Hyacinth.

When I got home I read up on this

Young Syston Woman to Help Tackle Poverty in Tanzania

Kharishma Patel, from Syston, took part in a half marathon see picture above, to support a project that tackles poverty in Tanzania, where she will be volunteering for three months.

Kharishma, 22, will travel to Tanzania March 2017 with International Development Organisation Raleigh International, as part of the UK Government funded International Citizen Service (ICS) programme.

She will work in partnership with Tanzanian volunteers to help lift some of the world’s poorest communities out of poverty.

Before she leaves for Tanzania she must raise £800 for Raleigh International. In order to do this Kharishma has run in the Amsterdam half marathon held on the 16th October 2017. Additionally, she will be organising a sponsored walk in

Kharishma said: “The money raised from my fundraising will help to make sure that the communities in developing countries continue to benefit from the work of future volunteers, so it’s vital I reach my target. I’ve been training hard with my running and making a number of bracelets whenever I find I have a spare moment. I’m hoping everyone will give generously as a result of my effort!

The project I’m working on aims to improve access to clean drinking water, whilst educating rural communities about hygiene and wash practices. Overall the project aims to create a sustainable and effective cycle of change in water, sanitation and hygiene. I’ll be working closely alongside Tanzanian volunteers, so it’s a great opportunity to experience another culture and make a difference at the same time. I’m really excited to get out there and start making a real difference to the lives of people in the developing world.”

growth. Understandably it’s hard when you’re trying to get on the housing ladder, or pay off student debt, but investing into your pension early and often could make a huge difference by the time you reach retirement.

The government hopes to plug the pension’s gap through automatic enrolment – a scheme that places workers over the age of 22 and earning more than £10,000 into a workplace pension scheme by default. Although minimum contributions are currently a long way from being able to provide for a comfortable retirement, auto-enrolment should lead to better engagement with retirement planning.

Aside from the government’s efforts to tackle the issue of falling pension scheme membership, some families are starting to consider how to use their combined resources in the best, most tax-efficient way to benefit younger members. This may be to help them gain a foothold on the housing ladder, clear debts, or build a pension. The Lifesaving Eye Test One of our opticians, Your Sight, based on Melton Road, Syston was able to help a young patient who had gone along for a eye test.

Amauri’s father recalls the events that led to the life saving diagnosis and treatment.

“My Son, Amauri (7), had been unwell for a some time. He had complained of headaches that made him sick in the morning - Firstly once a month; then twice a month and then to the stage where it became multiple times daily.

Something wasn't right. The doctors had tried to understand and diagnose what it was.

Allergy ? No. Virus ? No. Behavioural ? No not this little boy...

I don't blame the doctors at all, it's hard to diagnose from those symptoms alone.

Then, on Thursday 24th April 2015, things changed. I made an appointment to see my local optician.

On this day I had also gone and seen my GP again, who had to organise an urgent paediatric referral.

Friday morning, Amauri was sick three times, he went to school because he didn't want to miss it, but was sent home as the teacher had seen his ‘eyes roll’. Bit dramatic I

thought, but something was wrong, seriously wrong.

Saturday morning, we went to see Nitin, pictured right, my optician at Your Sight. He did his consultation and knew something was not right. He recommended we went to the Eye Casualty at the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI), but we had to wait until it was next open. He had written a referral letter to show at the LRI which I read on Saturday evening and knew we were in trouble.

Our lives have never been the same since that life altering day.

To try and make the next 18 months concise; Amauri had a 4cm by 4cm tumour. It was cancer, he had it removed on the Tuesday; three days after the optician had seen him. He is doing well and responding well to treatment. It's still a long road, but more positive, thanks to what Nitin did.

He helped to save my son's life. If I hadn't see him, I don't want to think of the consequences. He was the man who got the ball rolling to help my son.

My family and I are extremely grateful to him.

The optician is perhaps not always seen in this light but they are lifesavers. Since then I have told all I know, including the school, to ensure all the students have had an eye test.

For a child, eye tests are free. They may need glasses because of the results, but I would take that over what we been through.

We now make sure we never miss our yearly eye checks. Thanks Nitin, you changed our lives, you saved our son's life!”

Since that time, Syston Baptist Church has gone through many changes. Large parcels of land were sold off for housing in the 1930s and 1960s on Melton Road and Goodes Lane, and a light and airy church hall was built onto the back of the church building in 1970, a bit of an improvement on the draughty corrugated iron huts!

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News Harvest Celebrations The combined service for the 10am and eleven30 congregations was well attended and enjoyed.

The theme for the service was ‘Water’.

Much consideration was given to the fact that a considerable number of people have no clean water ever. There was also time to think about how we can save water. The children were asked to guess how much water several activities took, such as by cleaning our teeth and using the washing machine.

Then it was revealed how much water can be saved by being careful when doing these things like not leaving the tap running when cleaning our teeth and only using the washing machine when it is full. A special collection was taken for Water Aid. During the service the young people thought of prayers to do with water and those who have little and how important it is for us not to waste it. A large paper bottle covered with these prayers was processed up for the Rev’d Jackie to see.

After refreshments in the church, most people moved over to the hall to enjoy a Harvest Lunch of jacket potatoes and salad and a selection of delicious sweets.

Christmas Tree Festival Many local businesses and organisations have been approached to contribute to this and some trees promised with more to come. There 20

have also been several generous donations.

We are looking forward to the first weekend in December when the church will be open for everyone to enjoy the spectacle.

Ladies Friendship Circle On Monday 26th September our speaker was the Rev’s Jackie Bullen whose talk was titled A Recent Trip ‘Down Under’.

Jackie described a visit with her husband Neil earlier this year to visit her son who lives there.

After a couple of days in the ‘elegant city’ of Melbourne exploring its beautiful parks and interesting styles of architecture, they travelled along the Great Ocean Road with its amazing views arriving eventually at their son’s home on remote farmland approximately two hours from Adelaide.

Jackie, having recently returned from a trip to Tanzania found herself comparing the lifestyles of remote Australia with that of Tanzania.

We also heard about Adelaide, a city with relatively new architecture (less than 100 years old) built to copy the styles of English universities.

Their last stop was Sydney, a beautiful and interesting city with a wonderful maritime history.

The evening concluded with photos of the country and that of her son who having announced his engagement will mean a return visit for Jackie and her husband!

Monday 10th October was our Harvest Supper. We began the evening by singing one verse of We Plough the Fields and Scatter the Good Seed on the Ground.

We then had vegetable soup followed by cheese and biscuits and pastries which was enjoyed by all Church Clock There have been several comments about the fact that the clock has stopped and the chimes are silent.

A Sponsored Swim at South Charnwood Pool on Sunday 25th September.

When Friends of St Peter and St Paul's Church decided to organise a sponsored swim in aid of their proposed building project at the church, little did they realise what a generous response they would have from local people. Many of the regular swimmers at the early morning sessions at the pool readily agreed to swim for the cause and to collect sponsors. And those who didn't feel able to 'do' the swim offered to sponsor someone instead.

And so it was that on a very rainy Sunday afternoon in late September most of the swimmers, those who couldn’t make it swam on another day, and their supporters gathered at the pool for their swim. The ages ranged from eight-years-old up to about seventy, the number of lengths achieved ranged from two to a hundred.

The editor of Stn, Fiona Henry agreed to swim in a 1950's vintage costume, to keep her friend Felicity (who was also swimming in 'fancy dress') company, see photograph above.

All these good people were swimming in aid of the Friends of St Peter and St Paul's project to build a small extension at the back of the church which will house two toilets for the disabled. The Friends feel that these facilities are needed as the church hall is down a slope and on the other side of a road from the church; not good when it's dark, raining or icy, particularly for anyone disabled or elderly, or even Mums with toddlers.

Although we haven't yet collected all the sponsor money in and therefore don't know the exact amount that has been raised, we're fairly sure that the swim will have raised well over £1,000 for the building fund. So thank you to all those who swam, and their sponsors, and also to Darren Williamson, the manager of the pool and this staff.

LETTERS NSPCC School Service Dear Editor, Last year was a great year for the NSPCC School Service. My volunteers and I reached more primary school children than ever before during our workshops and assemblies - helping to keep them safe from abuse and empowering them to speak out about any worries they may have.

The NSPCC has so far reached more than one million children from 15,000 schools across the country since 2011 and is now planning to reach out to a million more.

Now the new term has started, my team and I are looking forward to talking again to children aged between four and 11, but we need your help.

The ‘Speak Out, Stay Safe’ programme is enormously important as it gives children the language and confidence they need to talk about their worries, and the knowledge they need to keep themselves safe.

I can’t do that without the help of volunteers. Can you help?

Volunteering is a fantastic way to give something back whilst also learning new skills and meeting new people.

Re Syston Station October 2016 Dear Editor, For the last two years, members of The Syston In Bloom Committee have, together with Raynsway Properties, friendly nurseries and local businesses, sought to turn Syston Railway Station from looking like a rubbish dump into an attractive garden that now contains many trees, shrubs, perennials and alpines.

St Peter and St Paul’s School Autumn Term News

The children at St Peter and St Paul’s school have been busy, with the early years taking part in the Harvest Festival at the church, see photograph above.

The school received funding from Tesco for ‘Let's get cooking’ activities for year 5 children.

Tesco supplied them with £50 and the children have so far made: Baked Apples, Potato Salad and Coleslaw, with more activities planned. The pictures, right, show them busy with their food preparation.

Borders on either side of the first car park are not only planted, but covered in a deep mulch of bark. The platforms have flower boxes and there is now even a flower box beneath the sign at the entrance to the station.

The station has had so many satisfactory comments that the RHS invited Trevor Hodson and myself, on behalf of the Syston in Bloom Committee, along to the Town Hall in

Nottingham to receive a certificate of three advancing (five is the top) for the work that has been carried out to improve the outlook to the railway station.

Trevor says “Next year it will be certificate five” - but then he has put so much into this project.

’s report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 27th September 2016

There were 17 members of the public, one police officer and 16 Councillors present.

The meeting began with the Chairman of the Council, Cllr. P. Henry reading the Reflection.

Apologies were received from County Cllr D. Houseman and Town Cllrs: J. Branston, P. Turner and K. Asmal.

Declarations of Interested were given by Cllrs H. and J. Midgley.

Adjournment for Public to Raise Matters - The Chairman thanked all members of the public for attending and said that if everyone had a question to ask it would be unlikely for them to be answered tonight as they only had 15 minutes for the adjournment, but that they would receive all and answer in due course. He asked for the first person to speak: Mr J. Gamble spoke about the ground staff and the upset caused by the situation of possibly tendering out their work, he said that with all the houses being built, the Town Council needs to get more money from Charnwood Borough Council as the ground staff have pride in their work - the parks etc look amazing and they feel that they are being unfairly treated. He finished by saying if ‘it’s not broke don't fix it’ and Syston will lose out in the future. He circulated a book of photos to the councillors showing just how far the Town has developed with the work of the ground staff.

Another questioned asked was “Have any companies been asked to quote?” This was answered by the chairman; who said “not as yet.” Derek Cox asked: “Have the council taken into account what these men have done over the last twelve months?”

Mr B. Middleton, Church warden, asked what the council have planned for the church yard or cemetery in relation to services in church i.e. when mowing, will they stay quiet during funeral services.

Mrs E. Yarwood, a former councillor for 16 years said she knows the men involved and that they’ve shown loyalty and have done everything asked. She added that she has a disabled son who works at the cemetery with Paul and believes with an agency he won't get the support that he does now.

Dave Smith, head of groundstaff; said that he doesn’t live in Syston and travels 28 miles each day to work here. He has no direct benefit and said that Shepshed contracted out the work for the parks etc and it no longer has anything. He continued to say the staff feel they are being treated as numbers rather than being appreciated. He requested to have an opportunity to sit around the table and discuss matters. He finished by saying that the staff turnover is lowest in the council. (Round of applause).

Cllr M. Carnal said he was shocked when this was mentioned as it had not been discussed by the council. He said the idea should go to the appropriate committee 30

and then full council. The council have not agreed to take it further.

Cllr T. Barkley said that there was no agreement as yet, the first stage would be to gain quotes. He felt that there had been a lot of misinformation given, which was causing unnecessary upset.

Mr T. Friend said he had worked as a contractor for a housing association and said the council wouldn’t get as much out of a contractor as they do from their own staff. Mrs V. Friend asked: “Can the council guarantee they will get as much for the money?”, adding that otherwise we lose the beauty of the Town! She asked the council to consider the effect of privatising the service.

Chairmans Announcements and Communications - Brian Henshaw sent a message of thanks for his card. Clr P. Turner is unwell and a card had been sent.

Congratulations noted to Cllr S. Gerrard for re-election to LRALC. Cllr. M. Carnal communicated that he had recently played as part of the Police bowls team in East Region and had won the pairs, they then went to finals held in Southend, but unfortunately lost in second round.

Police report PSCO Brian Geeson gave the police report which highlighted four burglaries of dwellings, six of non-dwellings, two thefts of motor vehicles and 15 thefts from motor vehicles. He said that the local beat team were working hard to track these criminals and asked that residents helped by making sure no items of value are left in vehicles and that they are secure. He spoke about the recent break-in at Syston Jewellers and said that although the beat team don't investigate, they do help with enquiries - The council later agreed to write to the police and crime commissioner, chief constable and local inspector to ask what was being done to improve situation in the town. PCSO Geeson added that they had been active at the Syston fair, particularly at peak times, keeping and eye on people, with the event passing without major incident.

However, there had been and issue with underage drinking, with individuals passing alcohol under the fence to people on the other side - Facebook was used to highlight this point.

Cllr S. Hampson said that September had been a busy month and spoke about the changes being made to local authority pension management and more cuts to budgets, although it’s difficult to say how they will affect areas as yet. He said that there was to be a merger of locally funded groups with the NHS in the future. A recent report by transport and environment showed Leicestershire was decreasing accidents on our roads, which is against the national trend.

Cllr T. Barkley reported on the outreach centre which is present at the community centre on Wednesdays 9.00am to 1.00pm.

All minutes were agreed after some amendments and discussion on a couple of items in two different committees minutes.

Standing orders - The panel met in July/August and discussed some suggestions that had been raised.

Two issues raised - One to do with how the chairs of meetings run them, the other was about confidential minutes and how they are distributed to Councillors, as all Councillors need to know what is being discussed.

After some discussion it was proposed to leave the chair to have discretion at meetings and that confidential minutes be sent first class post with councillors name on the paperwork and labelled private and confidential.

Tree panel - Following the visit by a tree specialist from CBC who surveyed trees and identified that some need attention.

Also residents contacted saying trees are causing problems. The council decided to take his advice and create a panel to monitor and plan any work needed.

I could hardly believe my eyes and although I thought it was an Egret, it was so unexpected that I had to 'Google' an Egret to check it when I got home!

We were entertained by Nicolas Farthers and Sandra Moore with witty anecdotes and tales about some of the 'residents' in Belgrave Cemetery at our September meeting.

They both belong to The Friends of Belgrave Cemetery, a group that tend the grounds, show people around and give talks about some of the well-known locals buried there. Sandra appeared dressed as a school ma'am from the early 20th century and introduced herself as Elizabeth Goodwin, late headmistress of Belgrave National School who died in 1922 aged 53 years. She is buried in a grave which she shares with her mother and sister, who are buried on top of her. She told us about several of the better known residents such as Rowland Grimston, Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police, who, because he committed suicide was buried on the west side of the cemetery. Anne Garner, who worked until she was 100-years-old and died at 104 after falling and breaking her hip while white washing the back step!

There were several more, but the strangest, I thought, was Joseph Taylor who designed his own grave and headstone and sat smoking his pipe while watching it being built, he then proceeded to jump in and try it for size. Sandra made, what could have been a rather grim story quite comical, with her actions and voices.

A lovely evening finished off with the usual delicious cakes and tea. Mrs V. Cobb.

The Annual Syston Christmas Event will take place on Saturday, 3rd December. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever and as usual, the finale will be an amazing firework display. Look out for posters around the town, information in the Syston Town News as well as on the Syston Town Council website, Facebook and Twitter.

CCTV at the Community Centre CCTV has now been installed at the Community Centre, covering the key access points and exterior aspect of the building. A monitor in the office is providing live recording from the cameras. This provides additional security for staff, our building and its users.

Fire Risk Assessment There has been a recent Fire Risk Assessment carried out at the Community Centre and all our ancillary buildings. Several recommendations for improvement in each of the buildings are now being carried out.

‘Syston in World War Two' by Felicity Austin, Cynthia Brown and Ray Young

An illustrated talk about Syston History Group's new book; 'Syston in World War Two' was given on Monday 3rd October at 7.30pm in the Church Hall, Lower Church Street, Syston, and was attended by over forty people. Two of the authors, Felicity Austin and Cynthia Brown spoke about how the book developed from another project and answered questions about their research and discoveries. The event raised over £100 for the Friends of St Peter and St Paul's church building project.

Copies of the book were sold on the evening, (some signed by all three authors!) and the book has been selling very well in various shops around Syston since it was launched at the local History Group's Open Day on 12th September.

Syston Syclers Summer to Winter

With the summer season behind us, we set off on our end of season club ride to one of our favourite cafes, ‘Cafe Vontoux’ in Tugby. Here we posed for what has become our annual whole club photo, proudly showing off the design of our new club jerseys. Whilst enjoying the first rule of cycling (tea and cake) we reflected on the routes we have enjoyed and endured over the summer! Some of our members have ventured further to seek more adventurous routes. A group of

Syston Syclers spent a week cycling in France taking on the mountains battled by the professionals on the Tour de France, including Alp D’Huez. The hills of picturesque Leicestershire are no more than a mole hill to them now!

A very hardy team of three entered the challenging Ironman Vichy in France, sharing the three demanding stages of swimming, cycling and running. One incredible member completed the challenge on his own!

Our winter season is now launched and we have lots to offer. An additional ride is now being provided on a Sunday as well as our very popular beginners ride. We resume our winter schedule of Watt Biking and Circuit Training with Jamie at JW Fitness. We will also be going to Derby Velodrome for track training. All this alongside our Saturday and
