Leicestershire Regiment, 1st Battalion.

Died 14th December 1941, age 23.

Norman Page was born in Yorkshire and enlisted in September 1939. At the time of his death he was serving in the Malaya campaign.

His CWGC entry gives no details of his family, but in November 1939 the Syston Parish Magazine makes a reference to Norman Page, ‘with us for the Harvest Festival at St. Aidan’s.' This suggests that he had connections with the Fosse Way/Wanlip Road area of Syston. He is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Column 66.

William Frank Warren, Signalman P/JX 159719. Royal Navy, HMS Limbourne. Died 23rd October 1943, age unknown. This is the only CWGC entry for this name, but it gives no information about his family.

Mr and Mrs Wilf and Jean Driver, pictured above and right have been celebrating their 70th Wedding Anniversary during July. Wilf (89) and Jean (87) were married on July 20th 1946 at St Peter's and St Paul's church in Redcar, North Yorkshire.

The couple met at a bus stop and discovered a shared interest in books.

Jean was a local librarian and Wilf was a young soldier in the Leicester Tigers Regiment training in the town.

They lived in Market Harborough from 1948 until they moved to Syston in 2002. Wilf, born in Hallaton, worked at both Symingtons and Looms factories for over 50 years. Jean, a school teacher, enjoyed a career at Little Bowden Primary School from 1968 to 1991.

For many years they were active in the Market Harborough Methodist Church as youth leaders and continued this association when they moved to Syston.

The couple were joined by friends and celebrated with four generations of family.

Syston Boy‘s Charity Walk Cole is six years old and was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in June 2015.

He is doing this walk to raise better understanding and awareness as lots of people still know nothing about autism.

Cole is very excited to go to Thomas Land, have lots of fun and complete this walk and support the National Autistic Society.

It then goes on to describe what organisations such as the Civil Defence and ARP (Air Raid Precautions) units did both in the early stages of the war and throughout the six long years of the war until peace was declared in 1945. The book will be launched at the History Society's open day which is to be held in the Methodist Church hall on Saturday 17th September from 10.00 am until 4.00pm.

It will also be on sale in several shops in Syston, including Peberdy's Newsagents, Jennings, the Card shop, and Gamble and Hollis. The Town Council Offices have also agreed to have copies of this historically important book on sale, as has Thurmaston Print Shop.

Declan made so easy to do. Now it's study time as Declan prepares for his theory exam.

When Declan was ten and asked me if he will ever be able to drive and I answered “hopefully”, not really convincing either of us, I genuinely never thought this was a wish that I could make come true. Some dreams may seem impossible but if you really put your heart to it, it may just come true. This is something Declan inspires me to believe daily.

This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”.

Some thirty-odd years ago, I planted Itea ilicifolia ‘Purpurea’ on a South facing fence that is close to my kitchen window. This Chinese evergreen shrub has soft holly-like leaves, whose young shoots and leaves are a reddish-bronze colour, but these soon age to a deep glossy green.

Over a period of years I have trained this shrub out espalier fashion in tiers along the fence so it now forms a solid screen some nine feet (2.7m) long by seven feet (2.1m) tall. During early August, long drooping panicles of greenishwhite flowers, see our picture above, are produced and those closest to my kitchen window are the first to open and these resemble 12 inch (30cm) long catkins. As the flowers have a fragrance on warm mornings, they do attract bees, hover flies, flies and midges. Consequently, two large Dragon Flies will settle on the leaves, preying on the flies. It is amazing to see the speed a Dragon fly can move at, the fly having little chance against its almost 60 miles an hour surge through the air.

August and September are the months when Hydrangea shrubs are in flower and the majority of those seen in gardens are the mop headed Hydrangea hortensia. Mop headed Hydrangea’s vary greatly in colour and often those purchased with blue flowers will, especially when grown in

soils with a high lime content, eventually turn either pink, or red. Even in my slightly acidic soil next to some Rhododendrons, a five-year-old plant, which in the first place was blue, is now an attractive pink. The blue colour in Hydrangea’s is due to the presence of Aluminium and when grown in limey soils the lime will lock up the Aluminium, but even if plants are grown in acid soils, if this element is not present in high enough quantities then the blue colouring will be lost. You can purchase Hydrangea Bluing Powder and apply this every spring, but I now consider this an expensive exercise.

When Josie Hutchinson, Roy Palmer and myself were judging the Syston in Bloom front garden competition we saw numerous very well grown Hydrangeas’.

One group in particular caught our attention and this was a complete bed of various coloured plants run alongside a part of the pathway on The Stiles footpath, which for those who do not know where it is, runs from Melton Road, between the houses and up to Oxford Street.

A Yucca filamentosa ‘Variegata’ that someone gave to me over forty years ago has once more come into flower.

This superb evergreen succulent plant produces a rosette of green, edged gold, sword shaped leaves, which

despite being a native to Mexico it is very hardy if grown in a poor gravelly, well drained soil. A spire of creamywhite flowers is produced during August and these will often last into September.

I am often asked why these do not produce seed. In Mexico they are pollinated by humming birds that have a very long tongue, in this country we have no native humming birds and our bees and other pollinating insects have not yet found a way in.

In one of my borders there is an 18 feet (5.4m) tall tree of Acer pensylvanicum ‘Erythrocladum’, which I grow for its young branches that turn a brilliant red during the winter months. Although this has set seed for over 30 years, until this year I had never come across a seedling. However two months ago I found a seedling growing in the dry gravel stream that runs alongside my lawn and now it is two feet (60cm) tall. I shall lift this during the autumn and grow it in a pot to see if will produce the brilliant red branches of its parent.

Jasminum officinalis ‘Fiona Sunrise’ grows on a large trellis that is fixed to a South facing fence and this year it has produced an enormous amount of growth, some branches being almost 10 feet (3m) long. This is a natural twining climber with yellow new branches and bright yellow leaves, also during July, August and early September it produces a multitude of white highly fragrant flowers. If this plant has one fault it is that occasionally the long branches will drop down onto the ground and root giving you what is known in the trade as ready rooted Irishman’s cuttings.

My runner beans, which I sowed in my greenhouse during last March, produced their first crop of beans during the first week of July then they stopped growing. I gave them some Growmore fertilizer and watered them daily and the plants sprang into life, so then i fed them with Tomarite to help produce flowers and beans. Now Vi is thanking me for our crop of tender young beans.

Sadly I wasn’t able to write my usual article for the last edition of Syston Town News. We were all reeling following the sudden death of our dear friend, Phil Sharpe, who had been our Treasurer since 1998. It had been his

intention to direct our next production; in fact he had chosen a couple of plays that he felt were suitable and we were in the process of ‘read throughs’ to decide which one was best suited to the cast members available. But I am pleased to say that Mark Smith has offered to direct the next play and has agreed to go ahead with the one that Phil had ultimately chosen.

So the group is now in full rehearsal for ‘Madame Blavatsky Lives’ by Joan Greening, and things are going well.

Madame Blavatsky was actually a real person, a mystic who lived in the mid1800s. The play, set in modern times, explores the impact of a psychic’s predictions on a group of friends. Both funny and touching, it looks at the nature of friendship and the importance of truth, even when you’ve known someone for 40 years. Each of the characters discovers something about themselves and each other during the course of the play, and we are sure that it will leave you delightfully entertained and more than a little moved.

With a cast of four women, this production is being directed by Mark who many of you will know as our Sound and Lighting guru!!! I am going to help as Assistant Director as well as taking on a small role. Please put the

Roundhill Flower and Garden Club

The demonstrator for Roundhill Flower and Garden Club in July was Elizabeth Bishop from Sheffield. She is a NAFAS Area Demonstrator in addition to being a freelance florist and speaker. Her title was ‘The Bird From Paradise’ which is a humorous link to her own country of birth, that being Malaysia.

With a title like that, we were obviously treated to designs consisting mostly of exotic plant materials and in a range of vibrant colours.

Peacocks, another ‘bird’ strongly associated with the exotic, featured

significantly throughout the demonstration with one enormous recreation (made by Liz) perched on a stand to the side of the stage, pictured left. Normally, he has a twin, however this had unfortunately been damaged recently so could not be used.

The first design also had a strong link to peacocks with a highly decorative grid used as the backdrop for the floral arrangement. Feathers, along with organza fabric, butterflies, and glittery items, all in colours associated with a peacock adorned this grid. At the base, a floral design in shades of blue, green and white completed the look.

A beautiful piece of undulating polished wood, hollowed out into a container which then raised up at the back, held a floral design consisting of hot orange strelitzias combined with orange germini, blue delphiniums, then clashing magenta chrysanthemums.

Vibrant red gladioli, plus red roses and red anthurium formed a design in a pewter coloured urn, from which was draped a garland of short twigs individually bound with red cord. Kentia palm leaves added to the exotic theme, with purple cotinus foliage providing a colour clash to the centre.

Liz constructed a hand-tied bouquet in a highly original frame. She used a number of Asian bangles (which she

purchases from the ‘Golden Mile’ in Leicester) fixed together with cable ties to form a platform of loops through which the flowers and foliages are then inserted. The colour theme for this was green and white, with the addition of peacock feathers.

Again using green and white, a crescent shaped design was created on a tall pedestal that had a distinctive woven texture. Flowers were gladioli, oriental lilies, and green single bloom chrysanthemums. A floor placement constructed in wicker basket completed this piece.

To end, Liz constructed an arrangement in a larger urn, this time using hot colours of red, yellow and orange.

There were eremurus lilies, strelitzia, a sunflower, and large red anthuriums, all set amongst kentia palms, large fatsia leaves, a huge monstera leaf, plus purple dracena to add to the exotic impact.

As Liz worked, she spoke about her love of animals, including her own rescue dogs, one of whom had managed to cause a nasty break to Liz’s fingers by being over exuberant when out for a walk. Tales of a recent flower arranging visit to the Far East, including Malaysia, enabled her to utilise her strong sense of humour as she entertained us.

Birstall Targeted for Voluntary Support Service Growth Syston and District Volunteer Centre and Dunelm launch joint initiative With the help of the IT Programmes staff at Dunelm, all of whom are positively encouraged to get involved in community support services, Syston and District Volunteer Centre is to organise a publicity drive promoting the wide range of services available through the Centre.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Paul Turner, says: “We are anxious to expand and promote our services especially to the residents of Birstall, who appear to be largely unaware of the wide range of benefits available to them through the Centre. A very small percentage of requests currently received are from the area which falls clearly within our catchment area. We are therefore anxious to explain to the elderly, infirm, disabled, lonely or isolated in that area how easily we can help them to be as independent

as possible, directly assisting them to continue to play a full and active part in family and community life.

Our core service is the provision of individual and group transport to meet the varied needs of our clients. Our social car service provides door-todoor personal transport by private car to doctors, hospitals, dentists, hairdressers, shops, family and friends, helping to sustain independence, vitality and independence. With the benefits of a team of volunteer drivers, this service is much cheaper and much more convenient than using a taxi.

Our leaflet drop will also target potential additional volunteer drivers to enable us to meet the growth in demand that we hope to achieve as a consequence of this exercise.

This could lead to Syston having no staff around for periods of time. What would happen if a one-off job or emergency arose in the council (as sometimes happens?) A contractor would charge extra for this event but as it is now we are only a phone call away at no extra cost.

Neither Leicester City Council or any of the Borough or District councils who collect Council Tax would ring you to try to take a payment over the telephone.

If you do receive a call from someone in relation to Council Tax, ask them to give you the Council Tax reference number and the balance outstanding, and check this against your bill.

Never give bank details or personal information to anyone that you don’t feel is 100% genuine. Any reputable company will be happy for you to check they are who they say they are before you give out personal information. If you receive a call of this nature please be cautious and double check that the person calling is who they say they are.

We recommend asking the caller for their name and contact details so that you can call them back

in order to check that they are legitimate.

Official callers should have no problem providing you with this information as they will understand that you are cautious about giving out personal information over the phone. If the caller is not genuine they are likely to become defensive or flustered when questioned for this information.

If the caller provides you with their contact details, please check the number against the number of the relevant council tax department for your area. If the numbers do not match we recommend calling the number on the council’s website and asking to speak to the person who has called you.

Clipper round the World Yacht Race Anna’s Report Garmin in Full Sail

As the 10th edition of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race draws to a close for the 15/16 race, I thought it would be a good time to reflect upon my North Pacific crossing.

Whist I knew the mighty North Pacific wasn't going to be easy, I had no idea just what Mother Nature would have in store for us. Had I known, I probably would never had set foot on board!

On arrival in Qingdao, China for race start, the weather was thick fog. So bad, you couldn't even see a metre in front of you! Due to this we couldn't do our refresher training out on the water, so we stayed tied alongside to do drills and skills. It was a long, tiring day, but at the same time a very useful one to recap on procedures we would need out at sea.

The weather cleared and we headed out at race start on a beautiful, clear day. Blue skies, favourable winds and what can only be classed as champagne sailing (minus the champagne!)

The first few days were fantastic.

Perfect sailing conditions as we headed South down the Yellow Sea and subsequently the East China Sea. I was so pleased to be back on board in such wonderful conditions with a great crew.

On reaching Japan we turned to East

and basically all hell broke loose! The seas were massive, coming at us in all directions. Sending us flying down the deck with such force until our tethers wouldn't let us go any further, or we made contact with something solid like the grinder, a winch or another crew member! At this point we still had thousands of miles ahead of us and I really did question what I'd let myself in for.

We then had problems with the water maker which put us on rations until we could do a boat transfer with the necessary parts from rival yacht Derry London Derry Doire. I was very wrong to think at this stage that all of our problems were over. Little did I know, they hadn't even begun...

We continued to sail East in the massive seas and then we hit our first storm. This called for all hands on deck as the boat was tossed all over the sea with very little control. A massive wave crashed over the yacht and wiped out the port (left) helming station where we steer from, leaving us just with the starboard (right) one in tact.

The storms continued and then we were badly hit by one in particular.

While dropping the Yankee One (the largest head sail) we simply couldn't hold it in the winds and it blew over the side into the Pacific. With this sail now firmly lodged underneath the yacht we were almost on our side and again all hands on deck was called.

The fastest wind speed was seen at 113mph and the waves were some 17 metres, with us bobbing around with no control whatsoever! After many hours of slowly retrieving the Yankee One from beneath the the yacht we were able to reduce the sail area of the main sail by reefing and continued on our journey.

As the journey continued the storms did too and we damaged so many sails, lost the bowsprit (where we fly spinnakers from) and then the inner forestay broke, which is a very

important part of the rig! As luck would have it we were carrying the spares on board and after a few hours of hard work by some of the crew we got this mended.

While confronting all these conditions the weather was freezing cold and on some days we encountered snow! It was awful as your kit was always drenched and you'd have to force yourself to get out of your warm, dry sleeping bag to put on cold, wet kit to go back up on deck and brace the elements!

We did however win the ocean sprint which meant we were awarded with extra points, so not all bad!!

I have to say, finishing the race in 6th position with all of crew safe and well was an amazing feeling and looking back now it's a massive achievement and one I'm very proud of.

Gables Nursery Does Their Version of Popular TV Show ‘I’m a schoolie get me out of here!’ Based on the TV series ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’ the holiday club formed two teams, snake rock and croc creek and took part in various gruesome activities.

They got to eat real maggots, mealworms, crickets, ants and locusts and find coins in slimy pots containing gooey concoctions.

All children took part and enjoyed exploring the critters, with each being awarded a medal at the end!

Syston Allotments are having a very good year.

It started with being particularly great for the slugs. Then as the growing season progressed with the vicissitudes of the weather, our local allotmenteers were getting the upper hand and as the first ever Allotment Open Day approached on Sunday 7th August, there was enough successful produce for plot holders to be proud of their edible efforts. While many enjoyed their crops privately, some were enticed to share their results and even contributed bravely to the gentle scrutiny of entering competitions.

Crime Prevention Advice There has been a spike in cycle thefts, please follow these tips: ● Register your bike on a national property database such as immobilise.com ● Mark frame with your postcode in two separate locations, one of which should be hidden ● Download and fill in a bike passport which is a record of the frame and serial numbers, photograph of the bike etc ● Lock up your bike with a good quality lock such as a solid secure approved D-lock ● At home keep your bike in a locked shed or garage ● When out secure your bike to a fixed object or bike rack in a well-lit and busy area ● Lock your bike through the frame and both wheels, or at least the back wheel

● Remove detachable accessories such as lights, pumps, panniers and quick release saddles ● Always lock your bike, even if you are only leaving it for a couple of minutes ● Keep the lock or chain away from the ground. Never leave them laying on the ground as they could be damaged and broken easily ● Keep the gap between the bike and the lock to a minimum – the smaller the gap, the harder it is to insert tools to gain leverage ● Locks can also picked, so face the lock to the ground but not resting on it and lock both wheels and the frame of your bike to a fixed object or bike rack

In Charnwood, people using the Local Council Tax Support scheme pay at least 15 per cent of their council tax bill. The four options being proposed are to make no change to the current level of support or to increase the minimum contribution to 20 per cent; 25 per cent or 30 per cent.

Dog Owner Prosecuted for Failing to Clear up after Pet A woman has been ordered to pay fines and court costs of more than £350 after failing to clear up after her dog.

Charnwood Borough Council prosecuted Sharon Hardy, 44, after receiving a number of complaints about a woman allowing her dog to defecate around the entrance to Latimer Primary School in Anstey.

In January this year, a Council officer saw Hardy enter an alleyway which runs through the school with a Jack Russell.

The dog defecated and Hardy, of Latimer Street, Anstey, made no attempt to remove the muck. She walked back up the alleyway towards her home.

The officer issued Hardy with a fixed penalty notice for £80. It would have been reduced to £50 if paid within 10 days. No payment was ever made despite reminder letters being sent out and therefore the council decided to prosecute.

Council solicitor Rebecca Sells said there had been numerous complaints about a woman matching Hardy’s description and the alleyway was used by the schoolchildren to move between school buildings.

Magistrates ordered Hardy to pay a £146 fine, £191 in costs and a £20 victim surcharge, totalling £357.

The presentation took place at the regular (monthly) meeting of the SADU3A in the Syston Conservative Club on Wednesday 10th August.

Following the presentation, Gail Devereux-Batchelor spoke to U3A Members on the subject of ‘Scam Awareness’ during which she highlighted the wide range of ways in which scammers seek to take advantage of our weaknesses, especially targeting the more elderly members of society. She gave advice on how to avoid being caught out and steps to be taken should we find ourselves to be unwilling victims.

In addition to regular meetings of interest Groups, SADU3A special activities for September include visits to the National Arboretum (21st) and the University of Leicester Botanical Gardens (22nd) and a guided tour of Leicester - ‘Leicester history from the Romans to the burial of Richard III’ (also 21st).

A special celebratory ‘Anniversary’ Open Day is being planned and will be held in the Syston Community Centre on Wednesday 23rd November.

’s report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 26th July 2016

There were five members of the public including two police offices and 12 Councillors present, Cllrs E. Vardy and S. Hampson arrived later.

The Reflection was read by the chairman Cllr P. Henry and included a moments silence to remember those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries, as well as their families, after recent tragedies in Europe.

Apologies were received from Cllrs T. Barkley, D. Houseman, E. Vardy, P. Wright, S. Gerrard, C. Dolan, P. Turner.

Declarations of Interest were given

by Cllrs H. Midgley, J. Midgley and J. Branson.

There were no matters raised by the Public.

Chairman's Announcements & Communications - It was noted that Mr B. Henshaw, although missing from council meetings, has popped into see the staff.

Police report - PCSO Jo Freeman talked through the report circulated to councillors and added that recent burglaries had been preceded by some leaflet dropping activity. The police had put out a message to residents about keeping their property safe while away, to make it look as if they are at home with light timers, not closing all curtains, asking neighbours to keep watch and also to register their property free of charge at www.immobilise.com.

County/Borough Councillors reports Cllr K Pacey was the only borough councillor present and spoke about his work on the Licensing and Charnwood road safety committees.

He spoke about the reduction in accidents in Charnwood during that time, saying that over the last four years the number of accidents had dropped from 80 to 51. He fears that there may be an increase this year as there had been 26 already, the main reason seeming to be speed. He then reported that around junction 21 the hard shoulder is to be used as carriageway. In Licensing there had been an introduction of a points scheme with a maximum of 12 points, at which point the person would lose their licence. On a positive note he said that over the last two years no one has reached this mark.

All minutes were passed with amendments.

New Christmas Lights - Cllr P. Henry presented a slide-show to give councillors an artists impression of how the proposed new lights would look. He said that the Amenities committee had agreed the proposal to renew the Christmas lights and that it would normally go to resources before being presented to Full Council, but as the chair or Resources Cllr T. Barkley was on holiday, he suggested it to be put to full council for approval and costs dealt with through the next resources meeting. The proposal was to replace all lights with LEDs which are more environmentally friendly and cost effective as well as being brighter.

Councillors were given a breakdown of the costs to do this with a total cost of ÂŁ23,000 spread over three years.

Unfortunately the old lights can not be recycled so will be destroyed. This passed by a majority.

Nominations for LRALC Executive Committee Cllr H. Screaton proposed the Chairman Cllr P. Henry, but due to time constraints, this was declined. It was then proposed for Cllr S. Gerrard to continue. This was agreed by all.

Nominations for H A Taylor Fund Trustee This is a group of 11 people, including four Town Councillors. A vacancy has arisen and resident, Elaine Yarnwood, was proposed and agreed.

Request to Hold a Football Academy in the October Half Term A note was sent around the Councillors to discuss this request for 6 - 8 years, one full sized pitch and possible use of the pavilion. Cllr M. Carnall asked if this was a private enterprise. Catherine Voyce (Town Manager) confirmed that it was a private enterprise. Further questions were raised as to whether the person was DBS checked and had FA credentials. It was agreed that these needed to be checked. After further discussion the Chairman suggested staff contact the person requesting more details and use the recess committee to make the final decision.

Cllr K. Pacey asked if all Councillors could receive a copy a couple of days before meeting so they can make comments. This was agreed.

Recess panel for summer 2016 It was suggested that the normal procedure of chair and vice chair of Full Council and Committees should make up the panel for emergency purposes only.

Criteria for Holding Public Events on Council Parks A situation arose that has raised the need to clarify when events need to have portable toilets - all events or those lasting all day. After some discussion it was agreed that is should go back for further discussion at the September Amenities meeting.

Standing orders review A reminder was given to Councillors about the meeting being held on 27th July and that only a few comments had been received. The panel will discuss and report to full council in September.

Town Managers report Catherine Voyce circulated her report and talked through some aspects of it including the news that work on the Skate park and BMX track at Deville park are due to commence in September. CCTV at the community centre will go ahead in August and new cemetery provision.

Syston in Bloom will provide a response after their next meeting.

Members Questions to Chairman A question had been received from Cllr S. Hampson regarding the cost of the pavilion and asked for an update.

The Chairman said that there had been a delay in updating the council due to waiting for bid responses for substantial grants. The full refurbishment is on hold until these are received. Cllr S. Hampson said he was happy with that response but asked the chair to keep in mind that not all residents use it.

The next full council meeting will be held on Tuesday 27th September at 7.30pm.

Heir Trigger The lack of financial planning in Britain remains worrying – many people only take action when receiving an inheritance.

Receiving an inheritance is a life event that generates a mix of emotions. New research has shown that worry is a common one, as the inherited wealth prompts many people to think about their own estate planning.

The research, based on a YouGov survey of more than 2,000 UK adults, revealed that for 29% of people, receiving an inheritance was the main life event that would prompt them to seek financial advice. This figure jumped to 49% for those whose household income was in excess of £80,000. Buying a property and retirement planning came second and third, respectively, as reasons for people to seek help.

In addition, respondents to the survey said that Inheritance Tax and investing were the two topics most likely to unnerve them. It’s little surprise therefore that receiving an inheritance is the most common trigger for people to seek advice.

Voluntary tax And they have good reason to be concerned. It is estimated that UK families could save a combined total of around £595 million every year by taking some simple steps to reduce Inheritance Tax (IHT)(Unbiased TaxAction Report 2016). Something as simple as ensuring that life insurance pays into a trust, not into the deceased’s estate, could significantly stem the flow of tax revenues pouring into Treasury coffers.

Figures released by the Office for Budget Responsibility March 2016 suggest that the government is on track for the highest annual intake of IHT in history. The Office for Budget Responsibility forecasts that £4.6 billion

will be raised in IHT revenue in the 2015/16 tax year – double the amount collected in 2009/10. More worryingly, the OBR data also reveals that the number of families paying IHT has increased by over 160% in that period.

Even though IHT regularly appears at the top of the ‘most disliked taxes’ list, many people still fail to plan their estate properly. In doing so, they are handing over money voluntarily to the government.

Research suggests that this is because many people remain unaware of how much they can do to reduce their own IHT bill, or because they prioritise other areas of tax planning instead(Unbiased TaxAction Report 2016).

Putting aside the stories about morally indefensible tax avoidance, there are some perfectly legitimate ways to preserve the wealth that you have worked hard to build and want to pass on to your family. Ensuring you have an effectively-written Will in place is an imperative, but lifetime gifts, trusts and charitable giving can all play their part.

Effective tax planning is not about avoiding tax – it simply means making full use of the allowances and exemptions that are available.
