As part of the planning towards the main event, the band also decided to enter a competition in Oxford to test themselves out against a few other bands rehearsing the same piece for the regional competitions.

They decided to raise money from Christmas cards and a cake day before the main event which was held on Saturday 30th January at the Malt House Suite.

Over 100 tickets were sold, with some people turning up and donating on the night. A fantastic figure of £3,010 was raised.

Queniborough WI Report Spring is in the air, or so we hope, as we drift into the early days of March and the daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops are in bloom to show us the way. The ladies of Queniborough W. Road Closure Fees Waived for Queen's Birthday Leicestershire County Council will be offering free road closure applications for street parties being held to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday this year.

The council says the decision will help to support villages and communities who want to organise celebration events between 21st April - the date of the Queen’s birthday - and mid-July.

The applications for temporary traffic orders, which involve road closures if events are being held on the highway, usually cost in the region of £400.

Communities will, however, have to ensure signs are put up indicating closure and the council can offer further advice, if necessary.

So far, community groups in Worthington and Burbage have applied for the traffic orders.

Guidance, complete with an application form, is available on the County Council website: http://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/news/ro ad-closure-fees-waived-for-queens-

birthday, or by calling Leicestershire County Council’s highways customer services on 0116 305 0001.

Syston Yard Sale 2016 It is with great joy that we can officially confirm that there will be a 3rd annual Syston Yard Sale this year. It will be held on the 11th June, between 10.00am and 4.00pm.

For those of you who are not familiar with the concept, this event is to encourage community spirit and raise funds for local causes. Participating residents of Syston will be holding Yard Sales on their front gardens, selling household items as well as plants, drinks, cakes etc. At the same time we will run a raffle to cover expenses and raise funds for a local cause. It's free to enter, and all the money you make, you keep. All that we ask in return is for you to sell your quota of raffle tickets.

Would-be buyers navigate their way through Syston using a map of locations, the last couple of years saw over 100 sellers taking part.

Registration is from April 1st to June 1st, we'll need your name, email, address and a brief description of what you're selling.

This year our Charity Coordinator Angela, will be working with volunteers from Make and Play. She'll be on the lookout for raffle donations, so if you'd like to support your local community and give your business some publicity please get in touch. We are also looking for volunteers to help deliver leaflets. As little or as much time as you can spare, it all helps.

This event coincides with the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations, and the county council are offering free road closures for street parties! It would be wonderful if people took advantage of this and had a street party in the evening, generating real community spirit.

It’s 11 years since I was first invited to look around and told what SARIC intended to do, including raising the funds to purchase the freehold of this building.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that Phil Sharpe, a man with endless tenacity and Chairman at that time, along with his fund raising colleagues that have continued to work ceaselessly, would ever raise any significant amount.

But they did raise an amazing £23,000 towards the purchase of this property.

My own contribution was to stop double yellow lines being plonked all over Chapel Street, and help, despite lots of hurdles, to get a grant of £30,000 via the County Council, but this was mainly due to Phil’s enormous patience.

Syston In Bloom The Syston in Bloom Group has decided that it will no longer carry out voluntary work for Syston Town Council.

Over the past fourteen years the group has managed the Council's entries in the annual East Midlands in Bloom competition. Together we have ensured that the Council has consistently achieved Silver or Silver Gilt awards. All this without mishap and with a considerable amount of mutual trust and respect. Wado Ryu Karate Club Billy Nethercot and Tilly Morgan both 12 years old now, started Wado Ryu Karate Matial Arts, way back in 2009 when they both were five years old.

Both Tilly and Billy are the only remaining two left from when the group was set up in Thurmaston, Leicester.

Billy and Tilly are still very committed and are both working hard practicing for their next belt ‘1st KYU' brown/black belt.

Sport Relief Swim Retired editor of the Syston Town News, Christine Gregory, completed 60 laps of the South Charnwood Swimming pool on Thursday 17th March to raise money for Sport Relief.

Charnwood WIg's Sarah the speaker of the month from the Fairtrade Foundation gave us an informative talk on how the Fairtrade Movement has inspired a fairer deal for all worldwide. She explained that countries like Ghana in West Africa for example were now growing their Chocolate bean industry with more benefits for farmers and especially women, who in the past were treated very much as second class citizens.

Sarah brought with her some chocolate of various flavours that began life in Ghana as cocoa beans and were finally produced and packaged in the EU as high quality chocolate. The price paid includes a premium to be used to benefit the community.

There were also some lovely handmade items such as purses and beautifully embroidered cards etc.

A Charity Quiz was held by Intercare at the Queen Vic on Tuesday 7th March.

The WIg's entered four teams. The Goscote Gadabouts (you know who you are!!) Charnwood Cookies, Tuesday Fruities and The Syston Slickers each consisting of four people to each team.

There were sixteen teams that took part in this General Knowledge Quiz. As it was held in the restaurant, an interval of much needed sandwiches and nibbles were enjoyed halfway through the evening. The Charnwood WIg's did their

best but were unplaced at the end of the night. However as it was all for a good cause nobody minded and I believe over £600 was raised, going to an excellent Charity.

On Saturday 12th March, The ACM for Leicestershire and Rutland Women's Institute was held at Leicester Grammar School, Great Glen Leicestershire. What a wonderful day it was! Three inspirational speakers in the morning with three subjects close to everyone's hearts. The NHS on Glenfield Hospital and the charity work involving the Cardiac Departments.

Showstoppers Summer Show In Rehearsal A brand new production by Thurmaston Showstoppers is on the way and set to delight both regulars and new fans of the group.

The show is set to join in with the Queen’s birthday celebrations and is entitled ‘Happy Birthday Lilabet’.

Set in a tea shop somewhere near Thurmaston, it tells what happened or might happen when Her Majesty dropped in for a cup of tea.

The production will take to the stage at Thurmaston Community Centre at the end of June and will run for two performances.

With ticket prices pegged at £5 it is hoped that audiences will be just as high as last year’s summer success ‘We’ll Meet Again’.

Litter in Syston Dear Editor, On Mother’s Day 6th March, we walked along Melton Road towards Central Park.

The pavement was absolutely disgusting, there was litter everywhere, it was difficult at times to avoid it.

In a year when there is a National Campaign being run by Keep Britain Tidy,

entitled ‘Lets Clean for the Queen’, Syston seems to be going in the opposite direction and is becoming dirtier!

What has happened to all the litter bins along this road?

Also where are the street cleaners?

Along our walk we passed one waste bin at the bus stop near the children’s nursery opposite Goodes Lane, and didn’t see another one until reaching Central Park.

How are people supposed to help keep this town clean without waste bins available? It is difficult to complain to people for dropping rubbish - even if they should take it home and dispose of it responsibly if there are no bins nearby!

Danger - Health Hazard in Central Park Syston!

Dear Editor, I strongly recommend to anyone using Central Park in Syston, be sure to walk only on the perimeter path, even then, please keep a keen eye where you are stepping. Also, most importantly, do not allow children to run and play freely on any grassed areas within the park.

Reason - a number of dog owners do not feel it necessary to clean up the mess after their dogs have defecated. The amount of faeces around the park is disgusting and those responsible should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

The problem is particularly worse when we have early dark nights.

Obviously these people do not clean up after their dogs at this time as it is dark and they are not seen.

I notice two large signs have recently been erected in the park, instructing dog owners to be responsible. But why are the signs so big? It is not eyesight these people are short of - just common decency, and respect for the park and other users.

Our aim is to help you keep your teeth for life, with the minimum of dental intervention.

I appreciate it is virtually impossible for the authorities to catch these people in the act and issue a fine (which I hope would be the maximum of £1,000). But something must be done to stop this disgusting behaviour. The new signs are having no effect.

I suggest a requirement for all dogs to be kept on a lead. If the animal is running around the park and defecates, it would be most difficult even for a responsible owner to locate the exact spot to pick up the faeces. Only to be found later by someone stepping in it, or worse still, children rolling in it.

The park is there for the people of Syston to enjoy, and for children to run around and play, without the risk of coming into contact with dog mess. It carries germs, which remain even after a time when all visible signs have gone, not to mention the horrible task of cleaning ones shoes after treading in it.

This problem is not restricted to the park. There are always piles of the stuff on the pavements of surrounding streets, Walkers Way and Brookside. Not to mention Barkby Road and Goodes Lane.

I hope my comments prompt answers and suggestions as to how this problem can be eradicated. Particularly from dog owners, both responsible and irresponsible.

This year our speaker was Karen Ette, from Loughborough, who has substantial family links with Syston. Her talk was titled ‘How Leicestershire Mourned, How Leicestershire Remembered’, its subject focusing on the men of Leicestershire who fought for The Leicestershire Regiment in World War One, and the subsequent commemoration of those who gave their lives in that conflict.

We were told how, in the years following WWI, the names of those who fell were carved into stone memorials built in the many cemeteries of western Europe close to where some of the most vicious battles had taken place, and in which men of the ‘Tigers’ had fought.

This was particularly important in the cases of soldiers who had no known grave.

The most famous of such beautifully ornate memorials is the Menin Gate, at Ypres, and some men of The Leicestershire Regiment are commemorated on its walls.

However, the Victoria Park memorial was not going to bear the names of those men, and this, plus the huge sense of desecration felt when the Town Hall Square memorial was demolished rather than moved in its entirety, led to the intense controversy of the decision.

It is widely known that the loss of life in WW1 was colossal, but the painful reality of this was brought home via Karen’s talk when she described how some Leicestershire families, with two, three, (four) boys, lost all their sons in the conflict.

To lose one son would be devastating enough, especially an only son, but for couples who may have consoled themselves in that they still had other sons, only to later experience their deaths in the same conflict, the emotional desolation must have been unbearable.

Multiply this across the UK and the sheer scale of pain and loss for that generation becomes apparent.

The Syston Town News’ report on the Full Town Council Meeting held on Tuesday 23th February 2016 There were three members of the public, one Police officer and 17 councillors present.

The Reflection was read by the Chairman Cllr K. Pacey.

Cllr H. Midgley declared an interest in relation to Syston In Bloom.

Adjournment for matters to be raised Car Park Charges at the Town Square Mrs F. Henry, editor of Syston Town News brought to the Council’s attention the changes in charges made at the Town Square car park as raised by one of their readers, she read out a piece that they had placed on the newspapers facebook page which had been seen by over 6,500 people and asked if the council would write to Euro Car Parks on behalf of the shops/businesses and residents requesting a charge for a short period of time rather than £1.20 for up to two hours which is affecting the use of the car park. People are avoiding it and this is having a negative affect for the businesses located there. After some discussion which included Cllr P. Turner stating that they are not allowed to call it a fine, as they have no authority to fine people, it is in fact an invoice and it doesn’t need to be paid, you only pay for the time you have overstayed ie £1.20 or £1.40.

The council agreed to write on behalf of the town to request a new charge for up to 30 minutes and to adjust the height of the machines.

Police Report PCSO Brian Geeson gave the report and began by saying that it is a year since the local unit moved to the office based at the community centre and that all the officers are happy with the arrangement.

He explained the area he patrols and the length of time in the force. He reviewed a report for January which identified seven burglaries of dwellings reported, four burglaries of non dwellings reported, two incidents of damage in public places which was a shop window damaged and the St Peter and St Paul’s Church lead roof damaged and lead stolen. There had been two thefts from retail premises, an individual had been apprehended and charged. Nine thefts from motor vehicles, of which most were left insecure. He reminded everyone present to check that vehicles are locked before leaving them.

Questions included items raised relating to the armed robbery and why it wasn’t publicised, he responded by saying the company involved asked for it not to be publicised, which is any victim of crimes prerogative.

Dog fouling was another problem, he said when he has witnessed it and asked them to clean up they have always done so. It is a continuing problem and needs constant monitoring, helped by the Park Warden talking to people and handing out waste bags if necessary.

He also asked about the zigzag lines on High Street as they are wearing away and could lead to any tickets issued being cancelled.

Chairman thanked him for attending.

Communications Renata Jones gave her resignation to the Town Council due to health issues and wished her predecessor well. She will remain as a borough council for Birstall.

The Chairman thanked her for time and hoped her health improves.

Cllr S. Hampson explained to the council that Mr B. Henshaw has been admitted to hospital with pneumonia but that he was home again.

An email was received from Cllr Mal Carnal regarding granite stone in front of the fire sign in the sundial garden.

Cllr H. Midgely commented on behalf of Syston in Bloom in relation to the new training policy and the issues relating to them.

Communication from Charnwood Borough Council issued a document re-guidance to media.

County and Borough Councillors Reports Cllr S. Hampson reported on the finalisation of budget and that the County had recieved £6.6m extra from government - now over £500m will go to child and adult social care projects.

Cllr E. Vardy reported on three items first he referred to an article in Stn about core strategy judicial review and that the decision had been received on the morning of this meeting stating that it had been refused and costs awarded to CBC can appeal within 7 days.

The Town Manager updated councillors on the progress of ongoing projects.

She and the staff were congratulated on received the first level in the awards given by National Association of Local Council (NALC), see article in March issue. Cllr S. Gerrard commented that the next step is to go for gold quality next time as the feedback from the event was that they were nearly at that level.

As the training policy was now approved an action plan was the next thing to do.
