Dryden

Dryden is a rural community located 12 miles northeast of Ithaca and 13 miles southwest of Cortland in Tompkins County. Take in the surrounding vistas of barns, farmland and green sloping hills. Dryden is filled with charming historic buildings and beautiful homes in the South Street Historic District, along with fun restaurants and shopping. Look for the West Main Street commercial district. Step back, chill out and enjoy the browse.

Book Barn of the Finger Lakes

(How to find the 3 red and green striped barns: Lacy’s corners is a “Y” shaped intersection north of Dryden Village & across from the traffic light/access road to tompkins-cortland community college. You must turn off nY route 13 onto north road. after the turn find a blue sign for tompkins county “route 163”. travel 250’ to a dark green mailbox then turn onto a gravel surfaced driveway.

Dryden Community Center Café

Dryden Lake Park & Jim Schug Trail

West Lake Road, Dryden 607-8445-8888; dryden.ny.us Dryden Lake is a small, shallow lake (.75-mile-long) created by an old crib dam, and surrounded by a park, extensive wetland, and agricultural land. it is popular with local shore anglers and is navigable in a small non-motorized boat (canoe, kayak). Picnicking and birdwatching are popular here. the scenic Jim Schug trail follows a railroad bed south from the Village of Dryden. Benches every ½-mile provide rest stops with interpretive signs marking natural and historical features. Dryden Lake Park is at the midpoint of this trail providing rest rooms, fishing and picnic shelters. the trail also passes through cornell Botanic Gardens Pervis road Wetlands natural area, which contains active beaver dams and various wetland habitats, making it an ideal site for wildlife viewing, particularly for migrant and wetland birds.

Hopshire Farm and Brewery

Hopshire’s craft ales feature nY hops and other local agricultural products, from cherries and raspberries to honey, maple syrup and more, in a variety of beer styles. Main St., Dryden 607-844-4782; southworthlibrary.org Listed on the national register of Historic Places, this library was designed by ithaca architect William Henry Miller and completed in 1894. in 2010, the library opened the Lincoln center addition, made possible by the sale of a handwritten copy of abraham Lincoln’s 1864 re-election acceptance speech. a copy of the “Lincoln Letter” hangs on the wall in the Southworth Library. the original sold for $3.44 million at christie’s auction House. elbridge, a town in onondaga county, contains the villages of Jordan and elbridge. elbridge is the smaller of the two, incorporated in 1848. What is now route 5 was built on native american trails in 1805 to connect Jordan and elbridge. the erie canal was important to the commercial development of both villages. today as you drive on route 5 through both villages you will see many beautiful 19th century historic homes. elbridge, like camillus, was formed from tracts of land given as payment to revolutionary War veterans. History continued to make its mark in elbridge, as it was named for elbridge Gerry, a former Massachusetts governor who participated in the Boston tea Party, signed the Declaration of independence and was the fifth Vice President of the United States.

Enlarged Erie Canal Lock 51

NYS Route 31 West, Jordan; eriecanal.org Built in 1847, erie canal Lock 51 is located approximately two miles west of the Village of Jordan, on the north side of route 31. it is a double-chamber lock, with the south chamber double-length on the west (foot) end. an information kiosk provides history and photos. Picnic tables and benches are on site for public use. You can also see the original lock tender’s house now located on chapel Street in Jordan.

Erie Canalway/Jordan Level Trail

315-689-9367; onondagacountyparks.org a four-mile stone dust trail ideal for bicycling or walking, the Jordan Level trail connects the historic erie canal towpath in camillus to the path in cayuga county. the trail is part of the erie canalway trail national Heritage corridor and is accessible from several points: the Sims Store in camillus, the Village Park in Jordan, Laird road and MacDonald road.
