Guillaume is a romantic farm worker in love with Térézine, a beautiful tenant farmer, who unlike him, is clever and well-read. She reads the story of Tristan for them both. The peace of the village is suddenly disturbed by the unexpected arrivals of the dashing Joli-Coeur, a recruiting sergeant, and the charlatan, Dr. Fontanarose. Joli-Coeur immediately asks Térézine to marry him and Guillaume is distressed when she seems to be considering the proposal. Just then Fontanarose pulls up with his potions. Guillaume asks him for Tristan’s magic potion. The doctor obliges, telling him that Térézine will love him by tomorrow.

Preparations are now going ahead for the wedding and Térézine notices that Guilliaume is missing. He has gone to ask Fontanarose for another phial of potion to speed things up, but he doesn’t have the money. He meets Joli-Coeur who offers him the money if he enlists. Guillaume agrees. Meanwhile, the village girls have learned that, since the death of his uncle, Guillaume has become the richest man in the region. They all want to dance with him. Térézine, unaware of his change of status can’t understand why he is suddenly so popular. Fontanarose tells her about the potion and how Guillaume has enlisted into the regiment. Térézine presents Guilaume with his recruitment papers which she has bought back from Joli-Coeur. She shows no other emotion so Guillaume believes he has been duped, declaring he would rather die as a soldier. Térézine is moved and finally admits that he has won her heart. Fontanarose sings the praises of his love potion and all ends happily. Excerpts from The black domino (1837). Magdalena Kozená, mezz; Musciens du Louvre Choir; Mahler CO/Marc Minkowski.

Sándor Barinkay returns from exile to claim his estate and, as the new local squire, is elected chief of the gypsies. He begins to dress as a gypsy baron. The fortune-telling Romany Queen, Czipra, tells Sándor that his future wife will discover a hidden treasure. He falls in love with Czipra’s daughter, Sáffi who dreams of

the treasure’s location. When Czipra reveals that Sáffi is the daughter of the last Pasha of Hungary and the rightful owner of the treasure, Sándor says that he cannot marry one so exalted. Men are being recruited for the army and Sándor marches away with them. After successful battles, Sándor and others come back as heroes who have been raised to the nobility. So Sáffi and Sándor are able to marry.

Salieri, A. Armida. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Marco Coltellini, after Tasso’s Gerusalemme liberata. First performed Vienna, 1771.

ARMIDA: Lenneke Ruiten, sop

RINALDO: Florie Valiquette, sop

UBALDO: Ashley Riches, bar

ISMENE: Teresa Iervolino, mezz

Namur Chamber Choir; Korneel Bernolet, fp; Les Talens Lyriques/Christophe Rousset. Aparte AP244 2:05

Armida, Queen of Damascus, has used her magic powers to repel the Crusaders seeking to retake Jerusalem. She has entranced one of the crusader knights, Rinaldo, and taken him to her magic island. His colleague, Ubaldo, arrives to rescue him, slaying the demons guarding the island. He discovers a palace with beautiful gardens, in which Armida’s followers are singing and dancing. Her confidante, Ismene, alerts them to Ubaldo’s presence and they entice him to join them, but he declines. Ismene summons more demons and he dispatches them using a magic sword. Ubaldo prays for help in retrieving Rinaldo. In the palace gardens, Armida and Rinaldo (enchanted by her spell and her beauty) sing of their love. Armida leaves him alone. Ubaldo arrives and, finding Rinaldo asleep, ties his magic shield to a tree. Rinaldo wakes, sees himself reflected in the shield, and recalls his mission as a crusader.

Armida prays to the gods of the Underworld for defence against the shield. Ismene tells her that Rinaldo is about to leave the island. Armida tearfully begs him to either stay or kill her. Although freed from her spell, Rinaldo hesitates. She faints, waking to find that he has left. Bewailing her fate, Armida commands that the island be destroyed and, vowing revenge, departs on a dragon-drawn winged chariot.

The Dutchman, a sea captain, invokes Satan and is condemned to sail the oceans for eternity. Every seven years, he can land and, if he finds a woman who will be faithful until death, he can cease his wanderings. Off the coast of Norway, he collides with a vessel captained by Daland and, finding that Daland has a daughter, offers treasure for her hand in marriage. Senta, spinning with her friends, tells them of her dreams of saving the legendary Dutchman. When they meet, their attraction is immediate. Senta ignores the pleading of her lover, Erik, but the Dutchman fears her inconstancy and sets sail. Senta proves her devotion by throwing herself into the sea, thus saving him. Together they rise to Heaven.

Julian loves Susana but he is jealous and makes her unhappy. When Susana objects to his jealousy, his godmother, Rita, advises him to leave Susana and forget her. Susana lives with her sister, Casta, and their aunt, the quarrelsome Antonia. The local chemist, the elderly Don Hilarion, flirts with the two sisters.

On the night of the verbena (or festival) of the Virgin of Paloma, Don Sebastian, a friend of the elderly Don Hilarion, reproaches him for his amorous escapades before they go to the festivities. At home, Susana and Casta hear flamenco singing and start dancing to a mazurka. Don Hilarion arrives at the house followed by Julian and Rita, who tries to make sure that the young man does nothing foolish. Don Hilarion comes out of the house escorting the sisters. Julian tries to attack Don Hilarion but Aunt Antonia screams causing the guards, the night watchman and the landlord to arrive.

Later, Don Sebastian and his wife are sitting outside their shop watching the young people dance. Don Hilarion, frightened by his encounter with Julian, takes refuge in the shop. Julian appears, then Casta, Susana and Aunt Antonia arrive with their dogs. Blaming Antonia for encouraging Susana to flirt with Don Hilarion, Julian gets into a bitter argument with Antonia. The subsequent uproar, in which the dogs tear Julian’s trousers, brings the police inspector who decides to arrest Antonia for being disrespectful to him. Don Sebastian intercedes on behalf of Julian, who confesses his love for Susana, who also declares her love for him. Julian goes into the shop to change his trousers but finds Don Hilarion, who comes running out pursued by Julian. Don Sebastian, Casta, Susana and Rita catch hold of the furious Julian, who eventually calms down, and the verbena finishes in peace.

DON LEONCIO: Fernando Latorre, ten Bilbao Choral Society & SO/Juan José Mena. Naxos 8.557632 1:19

Santi lives in the homestead, Sasibill, with his orphaned niece and nephew, the dutiful Ana Mari and her cousin, the irresponsible José Miguel. Santi’s secret is that he loved Ana Mari’s mother but kept his feelings to himself when she married his brother. Santi regards Ana Mari as his daughter and wishes Sasibill could be hers in future, even though it should be José Miguel’s by right as he is older. He is convinced that his nephew is only staying on at Sasibill until he gets his inheritance. Don Leoncio, the priest, suggests that the two cousins should marry or that Santi should announce plans to marry, without yet having chosen a bride, to see whether José Miguel will be offended and leave the homestead forever. Ana Mari can then inherit. Santi likes the idea and announces his plans to marry. As expected, José Miguel is angry and goes away. Unaware that José Miguel loves her, Ana Mari tells her uncle that she will marry him and give him a son to inherit Sasibill. Realising that he loves Ana Mari, José Miguel returns after a month and finds that she is to marry Santi. He tells her of his love but she has given her word to her uncle. José Miguel leaves but returns again, telling Santi that, if he knew that Ana Mari loved Santi, he would accept the situation. Santi accuses José Miguel of loving Ana Mari because she will inherit Sasibill. The young man says he truly loves her and doesn’t care about the inheritance. They call on Ana Mari to come to resolve the dispute. Everyone’s true feelings become clear and Santi gives them his blessing, hoping they will stay at the homestead.
