The grieving Orfeo resolves to go to Hades to find his deceased wife, Euridice. The god Amore appears and announces that the other gods, moved by Orfeo’s grief, have decided to allow him to bring Euridice back on condition that he does not look at her until they have returned.
At the entrance to Hades, the Furies bar Orfeo’s way but he calms them by playing his lyre and singing an eloquent song of his grief. They relent and allow Orfeo to pass into the Underworld. In the Elysian Fields, the Blessed Spirits dance and the Shades bring in his veiled wife. On the journey to the upper world, Euridice becomes agitated because Orfeo will not look at her and fears that he no longer loves her. Unable to resist her anguished pleas, Orfeo turns and, as he embraces her, she dies once more.
Overcome with grief, Orfeo plans to take his own life. Amore appears saying that, because Orfeo has passed the test of faith and constancy, Euridice is restored to life.

The fairy, Iolanthe, marries a mortal although this is forbidden by fairy law. She bears a son, Strephon and, 25 years later, she visits him on Earth. Strephon wants to marry Phyllis, a ward of Chancery. All the members of the House of
Peers also want to marry Phyllis. When Phyllis sees Strephon hugging a young woman (not knowing that she is his mother as immortal fairies all appear young), she assumes the worst and sets off a climactic confrontation between the peers and the fairies. Although Iolanthe is not allowed by fairy law to contact her husband who is now the Lord Chancellor, she appeals to him on behalf of their son that he be allowed to marry Phyllis. Iolanthe’s punishment from the Fairy Queen is execution. Meanwhile, the other fairies have become strongly attracted to the peers and the peers to the fairies so she would have to execute all of them. The Lord Chancellor suggests a law change that all the fairies should marry mortals and the Peers happily go off to Fairyland with their chosen fairies.

Pinchgut Opera PG005 1:31
There are two obstacles to the marriage of Lisel and Volpino. Not only does Lisel have no dowry, but both must obtain the permission of their employer, Madame Hawk, a young widow. As Lisel is the cook and Volpino a chimney sweep, their prospects are poor. Madame Hawk and her adult stepdaughter, Nannette, have suitors, Mr Bear and Mr Wolf, and, when Volpino learns that they have ready money from winning the lottery, he hatches
a convoluted plot which involves posing as an Italian music master and flattering both ladies into falling in love with him. When the gentlemen arrive, they are disconcerted by an unusual coolness in their reception, and agree that Volpino is a danger. Nannette becomes suspicious and Volpino quickly proposes that they sing a romantic pastoral quintet with the ladies as shepherdesses and himself as Ganymede. This device works so well that Lisel flies into a jealous rage and Wolf and Bear summon Volpino privately to warn him not to poach on their preserves. Volpino offers to comply, at the right price. Lisel is also paid by Bear and Wolf for her pains. The conspirators now plan to pretend to set the house on fire, assisted by the local chimney sweeps. In the ensuing chaos, everybody makes fools of themselves. Madame Hawk, ashamed, gives Volpino permission to marry Lisel and everyone presumably lives happily ever after.

Favourites, Part 4
Prepared by Elaine Siversen Handel, G. Alcina. Opera in three acts. Anonymous libretto after Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem Orlando furioso. First performed London, 1735.
Alcina, Overture 7
ALCINA: Joan Sutherland, sop
BRADAMANTE: Norma Procter, cont RUGGIERO: Fritz Wunderlich, ten MELISSO: Thomas Hemsley, bar MORGANA: Jeannette van Dijck, sop ORONTE: Nicola Monti, ten Cologne Radio Choir; Cappella Coloniensis/ Ferdinand Leitner.
DG 477 8017 2:32
Bradamante, disguised as her brother, Ricciardo, and her tutor, Melisso, have been shipwrecked and cast ashore on Alcina’s enchanted island. Bradamante is searching for her lover. Ruggiero. They meet Morgana, Alcina’s sister, who falls in love with the disguised Bradamante and promises to take them to Alcina who receives the travellers graciously. Ruggiero is present and later Bradamante confronts him. He recognises her as Ricciardo but denies any interest in Ricciardo’s sister because he is the faithful lover of Alcina. It appears that others have been shipwrecked and have been changed into wild beasts by Alcina.
Oronte, Alcina’s commander-in-chief, who loves Morgana, is jealous of ‘Ricciardo’ and decides to make Ruggiero jealous too. He concocts a tale that Alcina now loves ‘Ricciardo’ and will no doubt soon add Ruggiero to her collection of discarded and transformed lovers. Alcina assures Ruggiero that her feelings are unchanged. Melisso, disguised as Ruggiero’s tutor. Atlante, gives him a magic ring which brings him to his senses. Ruggiero regrets his faithlessness to Bradamante and wishes to send a message of defiance to Alcina, but Melisso advises him to pretend that he still loves her and make his escape on the pretext of going hunting. Oronte brings the news that Ruggiero is planning to flee and Alcina prepares to foil this plan. She begins to make spells to bind Ruggiero to her, but loses heart and casts her wand aside. Alcina upbraids Ruggiero for trying to leave her. He tells her that his betrothed, Bradamante, now has his love, and Alcina threatens vengeance, although unable to obliterate her tender feelings for him. Melisso tells Bradamante that the island is surrrounded by Alcina’s enchanted monsters and advises Ruggiero to take the Gorgonian shield and the winged horse to help him conquer them. Oronte announces to Alcina the complete
defeat of her forces and she laments her cruel fate. Ruggiero smashes the urn which holds Alcina’s secret power. All her spells are broken and the rocks, trees and animals resume their human shapes. They rejoice at their liberty and all celebrate the triumph of love.

Sidon in the time of Alexander the Great. Alessandro has captured Sidon, and, after executing Strato, the usurper, has decided to place Aminta, the rightful heir, on the throne. Now Alessandro decides that, for reasons of State and to reconcile the dissident factions, Aminta must take as his queen, Princess Tamiri. Aminta, however, has fallen in love with Elisa who, while living the quiet and peaceful life of a shepherdess, is of noble birth and must have her parents consent before she can marry him. Tamiri is in love with Agenore who promises to intercede with Alessandro on her behalf. The two girls follow their lovers to Alessandro’s camp where all four appear before Alessandro who changes his mind and decrees that Tamiri should marry Agenore and Elisa should marry Aminta. He officially
restores his throne to Aminta and promises to conquer a new country for Agenore.

As we do every Wednesday night on 2MBS Fine Music Sydney, 4MBS in Brisbane also broadcasts complete operas. However, unlike this station, 4MBS schedules one a month. This meant that there was a problem to solve when its only programmer and presenter of opera was retiring with no successor in waiting. Station Manager, Gary Thorpe, contacted our Director of Operations Mona Omar, requesting help to maintain their opera broadcasts until a new volunteer could be found to assume the role.
Being the 2MBS Opera Coordinator, I liaised with 4MBS to organise the transfer of fullypresented operas to 4MBS. I sent the 2024 Opera Schedule to the main rosterer at 4MBS so that she could choose which operas she would like to have from last year’s
broadcast that had been saved on the station logger.
Starting in April, 4MBS will have enough operas to keep their opera program going until November, if needed for that long: operas by Thomas, Rossini/Weber (double bill), Berlioz, Francesca Caccini/ Rebel-Francouer, Fauré, Cimarosa/ Lortzing , Meyerbeer and Auber/ Holst. The 2MBS presenters from our specialist opera group who will
be heard in Brisbane are Camille Mercep, Ian MacDonald, Jules Laurent and Peter Poole.
After the choices had been made, Chris Blower started work on editing the beginning and end of each recording in order to delete superfluous material and then Keith Chaffey has been sending the edited files to 4MBS via secure transfer system known as Liquid Files.
We are very pleased to be able to help our sister-station in Brisbane (which, importantly, continued broadcasting throughout the cyclone) and we trust that its listeners will enjoy the selection and the knowledgeable presentation of the operas by Camille, Ian, Jules and Peter.
