Bizet, G. The pearl fishers. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré. First performed Paris, 1863.

NADIR: Nicolai Gedda, ten ZURGA: Ernst Blanc, bar

LEILA: Janine Micheau, sop NOURABAD: Jacques Mars, bass Opéra-Comique National Theatre Ch & O/ Pierre Dervaux.

EMI CMS 7 69704 2 1:44

After many years, Nadir and Zurga meet again in a village of pearl fishermen. Their friendship in the city had almost been destroyed by their mutual love for a beautiful young priestess. Each had renounced his love for her and had vowed eternal friendship to each other. They reaffirm this at their meeting. The veiled priestess, Leila, arrives to pray for the safety of the pearl fishers. Leila recognises Nadir but makes no sign of recognition. Despite his vow, Nadir had come to the village in response to a rumour that Leila was there. Later, Nadir, sleeping nearby, wakes recognising Leila’s voice as she prays and sings alone in the temple. They declare their renewed passion.

Leila confides to the High Priest Nourabad that she is afraid to stay alone in the temple but he says she must do this, on pain of death, to fulfil her vows to Brahma. She recalls that, as a child, she was brave in giving refuge to a fugitive fleeing from his enemies. He had rewarded her with a necklace that he asked her to wear always. When Nadir comes back to the temple, fearful of Nourabad’s threats, Leila urges Nadir to leave, but not before they once again declare their love. As he leaves, he is captured by the fishermen who demand Nadir’s death for violating the temple. Zurga, as their leader, argues for mercy for Nadir. However, after Nourabad removes Leila’s veil, Zurga recognises her as his former lover. Consumed by jealousy and rage, he orders that both Nadir and Leila be put to death. A violent storm erupts. When the storm has passed, so has Zurga’s rage and he feel remorse for his anger. As he listens to Leila’s plea for Nadir’s life, his love for her is rekindled but he refuses mercy for them. Leila is taken away to the funeral pyre. Zurga sees her handing a necklace to a fisherman asking for it to be given to her mother. He rushes out and seizes the necklace. He realises that it is the necklace that he had given her many years ago. Surrounded by a crowd, Nadir and Leila are now resigned to their deaths. A glow appears in the sky; Zurga rushes in to say that the fishermen’s camp is ablaze. They hurry away and Zurga frees Leila and Nadir telling them to flee. Zurga pays with his life for freeing the lovers.

Gluck, C. Alceste. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Ranieri de Calzabigi after Alcestis by Euripides. First performed Vienna, 1767.

ADMETE: Robert Tear, ten

ALCESTE: Janet Baker, mezz

APOLLO: Phillip Gelling, bar

Royal Opera House Ch & O/Charles Mackerras.

Royal Opera House ROHS010 2:27

In Pherae, King Admete is dying. Queen Alceste and his sorrowing people seek help from the god Apollo who once, as a shepherd, was given hospitality by Admete. Apollo,

refusing animal sacrifices for the king’s recovery, decrees that Admete will live if another dies in his place. Alceste decides she will be the sacrifice. Admete recovers to the great joy of all but is horrified that Alceste has offered to die. He rejects her offer, preferring to die rather than live without her. It is too late. Alceste is carried away to the Underworld and Admete is restrained from taking his own life. Apollo appears with Alceste and reunites the couple.

1:02

The impoverished Count Tassilo, under an assumed name, is appointed bailiff on Countess Maritza’s estate. He needs to provide a dowry for his sister, Lisa. Maritza, a young widow, arrives at the estate to celebrate her ‘engagement’, an invention intended to avoid her numerous suitors. She chooses the name, Baron Koloman Zsupán, for her fictitious fiancé taking it from Strauss’ operetta, The Gypsy Baron. Lisa is one of Maritza’s guests. Tassilo instructs her to keep his

identity secret. A genuine Koloman Zsupán materialises, having seen an announcement of his ‘engagement’ in the press.

Tassilo is heard singing Komm, Zigány (Come, gypsies) and Maritza orders him to repeat it. When he refuses, she fires him but before he can leave, she apologises. Zsupán has decided that he prefers Lisa to Maritza, while Maritza is increasingly attracted to Tassilo. Another guest reveals Tassilo’s identity and Maritza, in a high temper, insults Tassilo, who declares that he will leave. However, before he goes, the repentant Maritza writes him a ‘reference’ which is in fact a proposal of marriage. The finale finds Maritza and Tassilo, and Zsupán and Lisa, betrothed.

It’s the 27th of May, 1845, the eve of the coronation of Charles X of France in the cathedral at Rheims, where royalists are converging from all over France and beyond. A cosmopolitan group of bons vivants, who have become acquainted while breaking their journey at the Golden Lily Hotel in a spa resort, have decided to travel together to Rheims. They include a countess, a famous poetess, the Polish widow of an Italian general, a Russian general, a French officer, an English colonel, a Spanish admiral, a German major and a scholar and lover of antiquities. Their hostess, Madame Cortese, endeavours to ensure that every detail of their stay is perfect but certain circumstances

are beyond her control, such as quarrels between guests, their regrettable tendencies for infidelity and no livery horses being available to take the guests to Rheims. News comes that the King will return from Rheims to Paris where the festivities will be memorable. The group takes the stagecoach to Paris where all differences are settled and romantic entanglements set to rights.

Bizet, G. Carmen. Opera in three acts. Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novel by Prosper Mérimée. First performed Paris, 1875.

MICAËLA: Ileana Cotrubas, sop

DON JOSÉ: Plácido Domingo, ten

CARMEN: Teresa Berganza, sop

ESCAMILLO: Sherrill Milnes, bar Ambrosian Singers; London SO/Claudio Abbado.

DG 419 636-2 2:37

Micaëla, a country girl, seeks Don José a corporal. Cigarette girls come out from a factory, including Carmen, who rejects male advances, but throws a rose at the silent Don José. Micaëla gives José a letter from his mother. In a factory struggle Carmen stabs another woman and José is made to guard her. When Carmen flirts with him, he allows her to escape and is jailed. At an inn, the bullfighter, Escamillo, propositions Carmen who rejects him. Carmen persuades José to desert and join her smuggler friends. On their march to the border, Carmen becomes tired of José’s jealousy. Carmen foretells death in the cards. Micaëla tells José his mother is dying and they leave, but José vows to return for Carmen. She, however, follows Escamillo to the bullfights in Seville. José returns and, when Carmen refuses him, stabs her.
