Jules has come to Paris in search of his lost love, Isoline, who has been seduced by the Marquis de Chateaux-Vieux. He confides to Sergeant Sans Regret, telling him that he has no money or prospects of a job. Sans Regret tricks him into enlisting and, too late, Jules realises that he is in the service of the Marquis. Sans Regret tells the Marquis about this new recruit and his connection to Isoline. Isoline is in a sorrowful state and pleads with the Marquis to be released. She is shown the enlistment document showing that Jules is now in his regiment. The Marquis is determined to keep them apart and decides that Jules should be sent into exile. Jules attempts to escape to find Isoline, but he is captured and sent off to prison in Africa. In Africa, a new governor, the Marquis, arrives at the prison accompanied by several people including Isoline. She recognises Jules and the two escape into the desert. Resigned to die of thirst, they hear the distant sounds of a band. A procession of the Marquis and his retinue appears on the horizon. The couple are rescued and pardoned by the Marquis and the opera ends happily with Isoline singing of her rapture.

KING PARAMOUNT: Kenneth Sandford, bar LADY SOPHY: Lyndsie Holland, cont

PRINCESS ZARA: Pamela Field, sop

Utopia is an idyllic South Pacific island with a lazy, langorous lifestyle for everyone except the Public Exploder, and two malevolent Wise Men, Scaphio and Phantis, whose job is to spy on the King and keep him in line. The King himself is a great admirer of all things British: he has hired an English governess, Lady Sophy, for his two younger daughters, and sent the eldest, Zara, to be educated at Girton College, Cambridge. His feelings for Lady Sophy are not returned because she believes what she’s read about him in the local scandal sheet, The Palace Peeper Zara returns, bringing with her six men, the Flowers of Progress, who represent all the good things about British culture: army, navy, law, the city, drainage-and-roads, and censorship. Zara is in love with one of them, Captain Fitzbattleaxe, who embodies the Army. Zara is shocked at the influence of Scaphio and Phantis over the King, and persuades him to let the Flowers of Progress take over the day-to-day running of the island and declare it a Company Limited. There’s a cabinet meeting and a formal reception, but the angry Scaphio and Phantis, along with the Public Exploder, are plotting revolution. Some members of the Flowers of Progress are enjoying the attention of the island girls. The King explains the origin of the stories in the paper to Sophy (he wrote them himself) and they fall into each other’s arms. The three plotters return with a rebellious crowd; everything is just too perfect to be tolerated. The King asks Zara what to do, and she remembers one more feature of Britain’s greatness, Government by Political Party, which makes sure nothing is ever really done as one party always undoes what the other party puts in place. Everyone is delighted. Suite no 1, from Victoria and Merrie England (1897). Royal PO/Royston Nash.

The ladies give Tamino a magic flute and his companion, Papageno the bird-catcher, some magic bells. Tamino finds Pamina and falls in love with her. The lovers reach a temple where Sarastro puts them through a series of severe trials to test their courage and love. They triumphantly come through every ordeal and are married. The dervishes, who earn their living by begging and deception, gather in the market place in Cairo. Prince Ali’s servant, Osmin, decides to join them, to alleviate his constant hunger. In the harem, Rezia learns that Ali, her long-lost love, has been seen in the city and tells her friend, Balkis. Ali then appears in a city square. He explains that he fell in love with Rezia in Persia but she was captured by pirates who transported her to the harem. The head dervish, the Calandro, recognises Ali but, more importantly, Balkis tells him that a woman has seen him from the harem and wishes to meet him. She takes Ali there and he encounters Osmin, and becomes annoyed with his drunkenness.

Rezia is reunited with Ali, and Osmin seeks the Calandro’s help in facilitating their escape. The Sultan is away hunting, and the lovers plan to flee. Balkis reveals that the Sultan is returning early, so they all hurry from the palace via a secret staircase.

The Sultan offers a reward for the return of Rezia, and the Calandro decides to betray her and Ali. Ali adopts the disguise of a French painter but is arrested and brought before the Sultan together with Rezia. The Sultan forgives them and condemns the Calandro. The couple intercedes for him and the Sultan sentences him to exile from Cairo.

BBC Singers & SO/Jiří Bĕlohlávek.

DG 477 7387 2:03

On his way home from a boozy night at the tavern, Mr Broucek finds himself transported to the moon, where he meets a strange collection of mathematicians, painters, musicians and poets, most of whom have counterparts in his real life, including the poet Azurean, who resembles Mazal, his non-paying poet tenant, and his betrothed, Etherea, who looks like Mazal’s earthly girlfriend, Malinka, with whom the poet had been quarrelling violently. Etherea falls in love with Mr Broucek, but when he discovers that they live on dew, he is glad to find himself back in Prague, where Mazal and Malinka are going home together, arm in arm. After another night at the tavern, Broucek falls into an underground passage and is transported back to the 15th century, where he is arrested as a spy but is taken under the protection of a citizen, Domsik. Domsik is killed during a battle

defending the Hussites, and Broucek, accused of cowardice, is about to be burned. He wakes up back in the Prague of his own time, ready to boast about his exploits in saving the city. Zdrávas Maria (1904). Shelley Everall, sop; Douglas Paterson, vn; Michael Phillips, org; Choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge/Geoffrey Webber.

The story, set in New York, is told in episodes covering a long period, from 1840 to the early 20th century. Wealthy young Ottilie van Zandt is in love with Richard Wayne, a foreman in her father’s cooperage. While Richard is away, her father marries her, against her will, to her cousin, a wealthy ‘drunken libertine’. When Richard returns and learns of the marriage, he marries another woman on an impulse. Years later, they meet when both are single again. Ottilie is about to be evicted from her home but Richard buys the property, saving her from bankruptcy and eviction but, still they do not marry. Many years later, their grandchildren meet and marry and find the happiness that eluded their grandparents.
