RICARDO BRECEDA’S SCULPTURES CAPTURE THE HEART & MIND

W

BY C E L I A TAG H D I R I

hen Ricardo Breceda was designing his daughter’s birthday gift fifteen years ago, he did not envision embarking on a new journey and earning nicknames like “The Picasso of Steel” and “The Accidental Artist.” Passion, perseverance and superior craftsmanship have made this gifted man a world–renowned artist. Viewing Breceda’s magnificent sheet–metal sculptures up close is like walking through a time machine. It is a rare opportunity to see wild, ancient creatures like the Saber Tooth Cat and the Columbian Mammoth who once roamed the earth. Some of the more lighthearted creations depict a gold miner with his mule and a World War II military jeep.

The 53–year–old artist grew up on a small ranch in his native Mexico. As a youngster, Breceda enjoyed riding horses and rounding up cattle and developed excellent work ethic across a variety fields, from selling ice cream to shining shoes. After teaching elementary school in Mexico for two years, Breceda vacationed in Southern California and decided to relocate. He began working at local restaurants and later engaged in construction work until he injured his back. Thanks to his familiarity with horses, Breceda was able to earn a living by selling high–quality cowboy boots at horse races. But his life took a significant turn when he asked his daughter what she wanted for her 7th birthday and she replied, “a big T– Rex like the one in Jurassic Park.” Immediately, he accepted the challenge. Things would never be the same. CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

(From Top) Artist and craftsman Ricardo Breceda’s sheet–metal sculptures are available for public viewing at the artist’s studio-gallery in Temecula; an eagle sits atop a cactus, the most common plant in the desert; the Incredible Wind God Bird, the “Aiolornis Incredibilis,” sits in its nest; fighting dinosaur sculptures bask in the desert sun as they did in prehistoric times.

With help from a friend, Breceda used scrap metal, wire and a welding machine to create a T–Rex that was 19 feet tall and 45 feet long with vicious teeth. His first sculpture took 11 months to complete. Not only did he manifest immense love for his daughter, he also discovered a hidden talent. When the gigantic figure was installed in front of the artist’s home in Paris, California, curious visitors clustered around the spectacular piece for a closer look. Due to his home’s close proximity to a busy freeway, the T–Rex was quite visible to passing motorists. Word quickly spread to the local TV stations and newspapers. “Overnight, I became a celebrity,” Breceda says with a laugh. “I saw the joy in people when they gathered around the T-Rex and told myself why not make a few more? But at the time, I never thought of making it a business because I was making a good living selling cowboy boots.” After two years of creating steel sculptures, he needed more space and cash so he turned his passion and talent into a thriving business and started selling his art. “More and more, people wanted to buy the pieces so I said, why not?” Most of the welding and sculpting is done inside his shop in Mexico. But not all of his creations are enormous; Breceda also designs smaller figurines” . Breceda also designs smaller figurines that blend well into the desert landscape and can be used as garden decor. But for the massive sculptures, he has several assistants. “On some pieces, me and my crew work around the clock to finish it. I aspire to make every piece look alive and give it a soul,” he said. When asked how he gets inspired, Breceda replied, “I design what my customers want or just whatever comes to my mind. Sometimes, I get ideas from a magazine or a book.” To date, Breceda has created over 500 world–class metal art pieces; 133 of these sculptures, including the legendary 350–foot Sea Serpent, are anchored into the grounds of Anza– Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs, California. His rustic steel sculptures are showcased in 20 countries, including Australia, Germany, Canada, China and Mexico As an artist, Breceda has been recognized by various media and organizations, including National Geographic, San Diego’s Museum of Natural History and KPBS. Biographer and historian Diana Lindsay wrote a book, Ricardo Breceda – Accidental Artist, describing the artist’s unique life story. Today, Breceda continues to create and sell sculptures. His clients include city governments, casinos and museums. The artist’s humility and generous spirit are as impressive as his exceptional talent and illustrious career. “There is no greater joy than seeing the amazing facial expressions on people when they see my sculptures, especially the kids. They make my day.” To learn more about the artist and his sculptures, please visit ricardoabreceda.com. 32

ARTISTIC LIBERTIES OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPERIENCING THE ARTS FIRSTHAND IN SAN DIEGO

A

BY R O B I N S AT T E R W H I T E

s children, we all have a sense of magic and imagination that turns the world into a fairytale. That sense of colorful adventure is so abundant, it’s natural to find outlets of creativity, whether that be shaky crayon marks on Mom’s clean walls or papier– mâché projects. As time goes on and the responsibilities of growing into adulthood begin to take their toll, our passions for creativity and the wonder we feel for the world begin to fade. When asked about hobbies as adults, most of us find ourselves perplexed and eventually come to the conclusion that we don’t have time, choosing to fade into a television–stupor rather than pursue some creative outlet after a long day at the office. We’re just too busy.

But are we really? Returning to that child–like enthusiasm for artistic mediums can be more life–changing than you might expect. Setting aside an hour or more a week to participate in a new art class could leave you feeling relaxed, happier and even help relieve health–damaging stress. Embarking on a lifestyle change certainly isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most worthwhile things we can do to increase our happiness. The arts awaken a hunger in us that is forgotten too easily and too often. From beginner to advanced, San Diego County offers classes in every area of the arts, from painting and drawing, to dance, photography, cooking, ceramics, music and beading. There are also choices in less traditional art forms, like candle and soap making, acting and improv and even cheese and wine making. Many centers in our community provide options for a one–time experience with a multitude of artistic choices. The Xpressive Arts Center in Scripps Ranch, for example, offers fun classes such as BYOB painting with multiple surfaces, like scarves, shoes and self–made masks. If painting isn’t your thing, choose from one of their other art classes, including mosaics, drawing and beading. If you’d like to focus on beading and you’d prefer to go to a place that

celebrates the detail of these little pearls of art, Ocean Sky Beads in Carlsbad is ready to help get your creative juices flowing. Join them in celebrating different examples of themes, new products and techniques, along with touching stories of how their creations have influenced our community. The culinary arts provide a hobby that delights all the senses! Join Cafe Merlot at the enchanting Rancho Bernardo Winery for cooking classes. Or meet up with Jason Roehm for his Sunday in Solana Beach series titled “Farmer’s Market Foodventure,” where intimate classes can expect a tour of the local farmer’s market; enjoy tastings in olive oil, beer and wine and then use the produce and experiences collected for a healthy, relaxing and enjoyable cooking class that culminates with a fresh dinner. In addition to a rewarding culinary experience, participants can feel even better knowing proceeds from the class benefit the Boys and Girls Club of San Dieguito’s Center for a Healthy Lifestyle. For many, performance can be an inspiring outlet for penned–up creativity. In addition to dancing, San Diegans can further their talents in acting and music with classes offered around the city. Finest City Improv offers different levels of training in improv acting. And if you’re hoping to improve on those long–forgotten musical skills, try group or individual classes at San Diego’s Community Music Center. The variety of classes throughout San Diego is never–ending. Liberty Station’s Bravado School of Art offers over 50 classes in traditional art forms, as well as Zentangle®, Vertical Succulent Gardening, decorative art, paper flower walls and weaving. The San Diego Museum of Art within Balboa Park offers workshops such as instructional drawing in galleries, in addition to school– favorited educational art tours. Or for a true San Diego experience, sign up for Painting on Tap, in which participants are inspired to create their own painting after viewing an actual exhibition—all while relaxing with craft beer from the SD Museum of Art’s very own beer bar, Panama 66. If you’re looking to turn your newfound hobby into something more serious, you may enjoy the LUX Art Institute’s in–depth classes. CONTINUED ON PAGE 36

harles Butler spent more than two years trying to figure out what to do with the 30,000 square feet of empty storage space that he owned off of Palomar Airport Road in North County. He considered using the high–end facility for boat storage—but it was nowhere near water— and also thought about offering parking for recreational vehicles, but the size of RVs made that idea impractical. Then he came across the idea of offering safe, secure and climate–controlled space for classic, rare and exotic cars. Little did Butler know at the time that his idea would blossom beyond offering storage for luxury cars into the creation of a community of where people could share their passions for the finer things in life, including a love and appreciation of some of the world’s most amazing automobiles. “Our goal here is to have a place where people can come in, relax and talk about cars,” said Butler, who admits that when he started

the business just under two years ago that he knew very little about car collecting. “I didn’t want it to look like any other car storage place, it needed to be comfortable and inviting, like a private club.” Butler explained that owners of historic and exotic cars are very particular about how their vehicles are treated on a daily basis while they await their next outing. That’s why Rancho Santa Fe Motor Club and Storage takes great pride in providing a clean and secure indoor space that offers high–quality storage and protection to maintain its member’s investment while keeping it ready to drive whenever the owner desires. Located in a well–appointed corporate area, RSF Motor Club and Storage doesn’t look like your typical car storage place—which usually has oil–stained floors, grease monkey mechanics and padlocked chain–link fencing. Butler’s facility has the look and feel of an exclusive, members–only clubhouse for the upper echelon of automotive collectors. “We are not cheap and don’t intend to be,” Butler explains. “We CONTINUED ON PAGE 40

spent over a quarter of a million dollars improving the building with three–tier security that requires special codes for entrance, lots of cameras, plus extra fire suppression and insulation to keep the interior climate stable.” A beautiful club room has a big window for members to look in on the vast array of 100–plus vehicles while socializing in a comfortable setting. But the only access to the cars is through the coded security doors or when personally escorted by a staff member. “Most of the collectors want people to see their cars, not hide them,” Butler said. “They like to share their love, not only for the design excellence, but most importantly, for the story and legacy that each of these priceless collectibles embody. They can do just that in our club environment,” Butler said. The club even offers a special app that allows the member to look at their car any time of the day or night with cameras focused on the vehicle floor. Not all members want their car out for public display, so the club also offers a private wing where access is limited to staff only. Since the ultimate pleasure of a vehicle is not just in viewing, but in driving, the club keeps each vehicle charged, with air in the tires and ready for the car’s owner to take out for a ride. In addition, a recent partnership with Rush Motors out of Colorado allows club members to join a program that gives them access to drive up to a dozen classic and exotic cars. “We have one member who comes in from the desert every other weekend to drive his new Lamborghini,” said Butler. “At the end of the weekend he returns it to the secured part of our facility and drives his other car home.” The club’s luxurious facilities are open to groups for private gatherings, such as corporate events, birthday parties and auto club outings. The RSF event planners work with the organization to determine which vehicles are most appropriate for the gathering and how best to incorporate the cars into the event. “Our goal is to create an environment where anyone who love cars can associate with each other and participate in sharing their stories about the cars,” said Butler. “It’s surprising to see how many groups

are looking for event locations with classic cars as the centerpiece.” The arrangement with Rush Motors brings a fleet of a dozen exotic vehicle makes, such as Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Ferrari, to the RSF facility. As a members–only club, Rush Motors offers several levels of participation that provide club patrons with concierge service to deliver a car of their choosing just about anywhere they want in Southern California or Colorado. Rush drivers will then pick up the car and return it to the safety of the club’s secure warehouse. “Once you own a car, the thrill of it can wear off fairly quickly and you may not enjoy it as much, or just may want to drive a different car,” said Alex Gurevich, founder of Rush Motors. “We offer the convenience of being able to enjoy the car without the headaches and responsibility of owning one.” By offering a membership approach, Rush is able to properly screen its clientele to ensure that the vehicles will be treated properly and returned in good condition for others to enjoy. The arrangement with RSF Motor Club and Storage allows Rush a base for much of its fleet to be enjoyed in sunny California during Colorado’s harsh winter months. Top–flight storage and the ability to drive exciting vehicles year round makes the partnership between Rancho Santa Fe Motor Club and Rush Motors a perfect pairing for aficionados of fine automobiles. The Return of the Gulls

A

FOUR QUESTIONS WITH GULLS COACH DALLAS EAKINS BY BOB MOREY

t last, San Diego can once again call itself home to hockey! Many of us grew up watching our San Diego Gulls in their white, orange and blue uniforms playing in the Sports Arena, watching great players like Len Ronson and Willie O’Ree. Today, after almost an almost ten–year absence, the Gulls are back! Our San Diego Gulls are in a new division of the American Hockey League (AHL) and are the direct affiliate to the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. Recently, the Gulls announced the hiring of Dallas Eakins as their Head Coach. Coach Eakins brings 30 years of professional experience as a player and coach to this inaugural season. We were able to catch Coach Eakins on his way to Anaheim to work on his new team with a few of our most pressing questions:

San Diego has been without a hockey team for about 10 years and has never had a team that’s a direct affiliate to an NHL team as the Gulls are now. How different will the caliber of hockey be from what San Diego has experienced in the past? A full generation of hockey players have turned over since there was hockey here in San Diego. The American Hockey League is the second best hockey league on the planet. The players continue to push the boundaries with their skill, size and speed. The sports fans of San Diego should expect a much faster and more skilled game than they have ever experienced before. The fans will also experience our club at the forefront of leadership within our community. Community service, character and leadership are equally important as skill, size and speed.

Fine Magazine: Coach Eakins, you’ve just recently arrived in San Diego, how do you like it here so far and have you been able to get out and see any of it yet? Coach Eakins: My family and I are very excited about our move to San Diego. We are a family who embraces the outdoors and fitness. We have been exploring the beaches and new cycling and running routes. Obviously, the weather here promotes our way of life.

As this is a new division in the American Hockey League (AHL) hosting a 68 game schedule, with players moving between the Ducks and the Gulls at any given time, how does that add to the challenge of coaching and planning ahead on line assignments? You have to be quick on your feet and always have a plan moving forward. Change is a reality in the American Hockey League and it is something that we embrace. We are never caught off guard or frustrated by the many moving parts. It is always an exciting time when a player is promoted and that promotion opens the door for another player to solidify his rank within our team.

How old were you when you strapped on your first a pair of skates and took to the ice and then picked up a hockey stick? I have lived 2 lives. I was born in Dade City, Florida. It was hot and very rural. Zero hockey. Our family then picked up and moved to Canada when I was just getting ready to turn 8 years old. That was the first time I ever skated and picked up and played with a hockey stick. I still remember arriving in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and seeing the kids playing road hockey on the streets.

BOOGIE BENEFITS

THE BENEFITS OF DANCE AND SAN DIEGO’S STUDIOS

T

BY N ATA L I E N E E C E

here’s nothing better then feeling good about yourself, both mentally and physically. Everyone knows that exercise is beneficial and necessary to maintaining a balanced body, but the gym routine gets boring and feels like a chore and the outdoors aren’t for everyone. The simplest way to burn some serious calories and have fun is to get out on the dance floor and shake what your mama gave you! Art is an essential part of society and dance is an art by which everyone can express their emotions. The essential medium of dance is the human body. And in the famous words of Martha Graham, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”

“THE CARDIO YOU PERFORM, WHETHER IT IS FAST LIKE SALSA OR SLOW LIKE CONTEMPORARY, BURNS CALORIES AND TONES YOUR BODY.” Dance, in addition to enriching the mind and soul, also provides a bevy of scientifically proven health benefits. Dance classes have been said to boost memory, improve flexibility, reduce stress, diminish depression, benefit the cardiovascular system, help with weight loss, improve balance and increase energy. Plus, it’s also a great way to make new friends! There are nine essential benefits from dancing that enhance your mind, body and soul. First, let’s start with your mind. The art of dance is a series of movements to communicate a feeling or emotion, and learning those movements helps increase your memory. According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine, aerobic exercise can reverse volume loss in the hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory. Along with boosting your memory, dancing can reduce stress. When you’re out at a club or party and dancing, you’re not worried about today’s or tomorrow’s problems.Taking time out in the day to partake in a hobby can help to reduce stress levels, and reduced stress helps to diminish depression. If you’re dancing with a partner or in a group, you find companionship and lose the feeling of loneliness. Of course, with dancing the most important part is your body! There’s a lot of heart and soul in dance, so it makes sense that it’s good for your heart. Dance can improve the physical condition and health of your heart and lungs. When you’re learning how to dance, each movement helps with your balance. Dancing requires a lot of fast movement and good posture which will help you stabilize and gain better control of your body. Dance offers a way to improve strength and flexibility, which helps keeps muscles and joints healthy. The more you’re active, the more energy you will have and the more you’ll accomplish; it’s the perfect, healthy definition of a “domino effect.” The best part? You’re having so much fun, you don’t realize that you are losing weight! According to a study in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, dance is as beneficial in weight loss as other rigorous forms of exercise. The cardio you perform, whether it is fast like salsa or slow like contemporary, burns calories and tones your body. The most rewarding part of dance is that it gives you a chance to start a new hobby and a place to make new friends. Participating in dance can help increase your self–esteem and confidence through mastering new skills. Dance offers a creative outlet for people to express their personalities in a safe environment. Inspired yet? There are several dance studios in San Diego where you can experience these benefits. Dancessense Studios, located in Carlsbad, provides flexible dance class options that allow students to try one class at a time, take monthly classes, or purchase blocks of lessons with discounts. Dancessense is focused on making dancing accessible, affordable and fun without compromising quality for all ages and skill levels. Dancessense even has a custom–designed floating floor that minimizes impact on the body and feet. Their high caliber Dance Instructors include Professional U.S. National Champions and World Champions. Students also have an opportunity to take lessons from Licensed World Class Dance Judges. Dancessense Studios, LLC has been in business since January of 2013. It was opened by Melissa Dexter and Giacomo Steccaglia, former Professional World Champions. They coach all categories of dance

and have choreographed for television, stage and film. Despite their professional leanings, Dancessense’s philosophy is that dance is for everyone— from toddlers to seniors and everyone in between— and all levels—from a complete novice who is taking their first dance step to those whose aspirations are to compete at the international level. Dancessense Studios offers classes in all categories of ballroom, social and nightclub dances, including waltz, tango, cha cha, samba, rumba, west coast swing, Argentine tango, salsa and more. Dancessense Studios also offers classes in other fun dance forms including line dancing, Nia, Afro–Brazilian/Capoeira and hip–hop. PROTON THERAPY BRINGS NEW LEVEL OF PRECISION TO CANCER CARE IN SAN DIEGO

S

BY CARL ROSSI, M.D.

an Diego County is fertile ground for both high– quality health care and scientific innovation. So it was fitting when the region became home to one of the most technologically advanced cancer treatment centers in the nation last year with the opening of the Scripps Proton Therapy Center. Proton therapy is an extremely precise form of external beam radiation treatment that effectively kills tumors while sparing more of a patient’s healthy tissue than conventional X–ray radiation. This accuracy is important because less radiation to healthy tissue lowers the probability of patients experiencing side effects and treatment–related cancers. Breast cancer is top–of–mind in October during national Breast Cancer Awareness Month—and proton therapy effectively treats this condition, along with many other forms of cancer. Approximately two–thirds of all cancer patients will receive some form of radiation therapy during their illness, according to the American Society for Radiation Oncology. How does proton therapy work? Proton therapy is delivered by generating a beam that penetrates the body from the outside. Because the beam is composed of protons— positively charged subatomic particles—the radiation dose can be controlled to conform to the shape and depth of the tumor site.

46

Protons stop where the tumor stops. By comparison, X–ray radiation therapy beams, which are most commonly used today, penetrate well beyond the tumor because they have no electrical charge. What types of patients are candidates? Proton therapy is best suited for solid tumors that have not spread to distant areas of the body, are located near sensitive normal tissue and require high doses of radiation. Proton therapy is also recognized as the preferred form of radiation therapy for many pediatric cancers, since children’s bodies are still growing and are extremely sensitive to the harmful effects of radiation. A recent national survey led by Scripps showed that the number of pediatric patients treated with proton therapy annually has increased by 36% since 2010. The center has received patients both from within the Scripps Health system and through its affiliate providers, Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and UC San Diego Health System. Treatment at Scripps Proton Therapy Center is available to any health system in San Diego and beyond. More than one–third of Scripps’ proton patients to date have come from outside San Diego, including nine different states and as far away as Monaco and China. What are proton treatments like? During therapy, patients feel no physical sensation from the proton beam, hear very little noise and experience minimal discomfort while

Who has benefitted so far? Scripps has branched out quickly to treat a wide variety of cancer types. Tumor sites treated since the center’s opening include lung, brain, spinal column, base of the skull, head and neck (e.g., oropharynx, salivary gland), central nervous systems, pancreas, rectum, esophagus, breast (male and female), testis, prostate, inter– abdominal lymphoid tissue, thymus gland, bone and others. The center has also delivered a number of re-treatments in areas where patients had prior radiation (an application where protons are especially appealing, because less healthy tissue is exposed to additional radiation). Doctors have also treated a number of non–cancerous tumors. Any personal stories to share? Anastasia Berkheimer is a 71–year–old woman who came to us with left–side breast cancer and a pre-existing heart condition. Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that women who received X–ray radiation to their left breast developed a higher risk for heart disease, which was directly linked to the volume of heart being irradiated during treatment. Anastasia chose proton therapy because it could treat the tumor area without affecting her heart at all. Anastasia successfully completed treatments in just two weeks with minimal side effects and is back to her passion of playing in a ukulele band to raise spirits at local senior citizen homes. Is Scripps different from other proton centers? There are now more than 17 proton therapy centers in the United States, but only Scripps and Mayo Clinic treat patients

exclusively with pencil-beam scanning technology, a completely digitized delivery system. With pencil–beam scanning, doctors create 3–D models of each tumor and convert them into computerized data files. The technology breaks each tumor into thousands of tiny cubes, and then uses electromagnets to sweep the proton beam across the tumor, treating it layer by layer, to the precise height, width and depth prescribed by the physician. This approach is considerably more accurate than previous generations of proton technology.

A San Diego Native

Will the center take part in research? As a member of the Proton Collaborative Group (PCG), Scripps Health is participating in multi–institutional research studies to help optimize proton therapy. Currently, Scripps is part of a PCG registry trial to gather clinical outcome data from all of its patients, regardless of diagnosis, and expects to expand into tumor–specific studies. Scripps also plans to be involved in prospective randomized research trials comparing proton and X–ray radiation therapy through its involvement with NRG Oncology, a collaborative research organization of the National Cancer Institute. Is the treatment covered by insurance? Proton therapy has been approved by the Food & Drug Administration since the first hospital–based proton center in the U.S. opened in 1990. It has an established history of reimbursement by Medicare and many private health insurance payers. Specific coverage guidelines vary among commercial insurers. Scripps Health provides the Center’s clinical management services and Scripps Clinic oversees the medical services. Advanced Particle Therapy is the center’s developer and owner. Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, California developed, installed and validated the center’s ProBeam proton delivery system. The center is located in the Mira Mesa area of San Diego at 9730 Summers Ridge Road. More information is available by calling 858-549-7400. Carl Rossi, M.D. is a radiation oncologist and medical director of the Scripps Proton Therapy Center who has more than 20 years of experience with proton therapy.

on the treatment table. The delivery of the proton beam to the patient typically lasts approximately one minute per treatment field. Time spent in the treatment room is usually about 15 to 20 minutes, most of which is for precise patient positioning and equipment adjustments. Afterward, patients are free to go about their daily activities, although pediatric patients may receive treatments under anesthesia. Proton treatments are delivered on an outpatient basis and most patients receive daily weekday treatments for four to eight consecutive weeks.

s beauty all that? Do people still judge books by their cover? The answer is an irrefutable “yes.” Although modern sentiments try to steer us clear of such judgement, a Princeton University study recently showed that with just a split–second glance at a person’s face, we can form permanent conclusions about their leadership skills, vigor, intelligence and more. With appearance as important ever, our society invests itself daily in the war against aging. We also recognize, more than ever, the need to take care of ourselves. Our overall health has been improving; over the past century, our global life expectancy has more than doubled (from 30 years in 1900 to 70 years today). With modern health advances and medical technology, 50 is the new 30. And if we all feel younger on the inside, shouldn’t we do something to ensure we look younger on the outside, too? There are the untold secrets that women hold inside that keep them looking young. I want those

Ultherapy tightens the skin in a variety of sensitive areas, including the neck, chin, eyes and décolletage. OPPOSITE: The machine used in Ultherapy pinpoints problem areas and uses ultrasound to tighten the skin.

secrets—don’t you? I embarked on a search to find the secrets to great, youthful skin. First, I found a real woman in her 50s with beautiful skin who was willing to share her personal secrets (but wished to remain anonymous). “My number one thing is maintenance,” she said. “You can’t do one treatment and expect it to cure everything. The other key is research; know the areas you want to improve and do a little something to make yourself feel better.” As she reminded me, the key to great skin is research and knowing why and how your skin can keep that glow. Again and again, my research led me back to “collagen.” But what exactly is collagen and how does it help my skin? I needed to consult an expert. I spoke with Dr. Daniel Mills, President– Elect of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, in order to get a little more insight into collagen. According to Dr. Mills, “Collagen is a protein found in your connective tissues—skin, bones, ligaments and tendons. Its primary

function is to support those connective tissues with cushioning and structural support. The body needs collagen to bind it together—literally. As we get older, we lose collagen. Lots of things cause us to withdraw from our collagen bank account—birthdays, sun damage, loss of hormones, smoking. “As collagen breaks down, we see fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. Replenishing the collagen bank is going to make us look better. For years, we have been using fillers to add more structure to faces, but while injectables can fill in wrinkles, they do nothing to restore the lost collagen.” Over the years, lasers have become our most valuable weapon in the war against aging, but choosing the right laser treatment can be overwhelming. After my extensive research, the best thing I found to speed reproduction of collagen in its natural format and to rejuvenate it was the Ultherapy treatment. According to Dr. Mills, “A treatment like Ultherapy triggers a natural response under the skin, jumpstarting the regenerative process that deposits fresh, new

collagen to be stored in the bank.” Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to boost collagen production, tightening and lifting your skin naturally—it’s like sonar for your skin! It’s the only treatment approved by the FDA to tighten your skin without surgery or downtime. Ultherapy has gained popularity for its use on loose neck, chin and under–eye skin, but recently it’s even been used on wrinkled décolletage. This laser works on deep tissue, ensuring it lasts. My problem area was loose skin and I wanted a skin–tightening treatment, so I decided to try Ultherapy for myself. Ultherapy can be performed locally in San Diego by some of our top doctors, but I went to one of the leaders in the industry, Dr. Sabrina Fabi. Dr. Fabi was an early adopter of the Ultherapy technology and has been using it in her practice since 2011. I underwent Ultherapy treatment 5 months ago, receiving treatment on my entire face, all the way to my décolletage. Did it hurt? Honestly, I found the treatment to be uncomfortable and slightly painful, but others feel no pain at all and some have even been known to sleep right through it. For me, I’m more than willing to endure a little pain if that’s the price for staying beautiful. The next day I experienced some tightness in my skin and it was a little sensitive to the touch. I immediately sensed that the treatment was working. Ultherapy’s changes occur over a three month period and I watched as my face transformed. Five months later, my skin looks great! I can sense notable changes in my skin. Areas I was previously self– conscious about, like the loose skin along my neck and jaw, are visibly tighter. My skin has a new youthful glow and I’ve found myself doing less and less to camouflage previous problem areas. My profession means I’m always in the public eye; at any time I could be judged upon my appearance. When I set out on this skin–changing journey, I only hoped to find a treatment that could restore even a pinch of my youth, but through my extensive research I discovered the best treatment for my skin. Now, when I face the judgmental eye of the public, I can stand with confidence! As the historical philosopher Chanakya once said, “The world’s biggest power is the youth and beauty of a woman.” And I feel more powerful than ever! FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

100 years ago, when San Diego was little more than a sandy spot on a map, the Panama– California International Exposition came to Balboa Park, bringing with it a lasting esteem for the arts. The Exposition showcased works from local, national and international artists and established San Diego as a mecca for the craft. As San Diego grew and expanded her cultural horizons, so did her art. People of all backgrounds, races, and cultures flocked to San Diego, bringing their arts and traditional crafts with them and expanding the definition of art in our great city. Traditional displays of European paintings and sculptures displayed side–by–side with the textiles of India and the intricate pottery of Africa. All art, all San Diego. Our historical devotion to art continues today, from the watercolors displayed in the San Diego Museum of Art, to the murals sprayed across our cityscapes, to the works seen on our own pages in the annual...

YANYA MORTON FINDING A MUSE IN MANNEQUINS

A

former set painter in Vancouver’s film and television industry and the daughter of bohemian parents, Yanya Morton’s love of art and fashion was instilled in her at a young age. She was encouraged to explore and nurture her creative interests through the experience of travel and often finds inspiration in faraway exotic locations and submersing herself in their cultures. After two years of formal training and years in the film industry, the 1990’s became a time of rebirth in her career as an artist. Art has always offered the ultimate channel for meditation and self– expression. The idea of creating art that inspires, evokes thought and emotion and often heals is the ultimate goal for any artist. Yanya’s many interests are expressed through her diverse body of work, though each series is different in application and reflects the artist’s state of mind at that particular moment in time. Each series rarely has a definitive end, as Yanya has a tendency to revisit and explore other aspects of those earlier series with increased depth and intensity in her projection of attitude. Her earlier works concentrated on the nurturing of purities of Nature and celebrating a sense of innocence (for example, landscapes and flowers). As she progressed throughout her career, the complexities of her life and experiences have become more prevalent in her work. Her knowledge of different religions and environmental, social and political issues have become a driving force in her artwork over the last few years. Her incorporation of collage of text and mixed media has allowed Yanya to delve into these issues with greater complexity and tenacity. The limitation of solely painting on canvas has presented the artist with a new sense of curiosity in her ability to create art in the third dimension. Whereas traditional sculpture would have been the first thing to consider, unconventional applications for expression

are ultimately far more appealing. Finding a muse in mannequins is bound to spark exceptional visual experiences. Yanya’s fascination with the relevance and influence mannequins have had on social history has inspired her recent work. The French meaning of mannequin can be translated as “artist’s jointed model,” originating from the Flemish manneken or “little man, figurine.” Mannequins first appeared in the 1800s in Paris. The shift from their originally designed body types, overly sexualized and faceless, changed to more futuristic models, lacking any discernible physical characteristics, including being headless. They began to assume a variety of postures and attitudes, which developed into a more disgusting trend of headless bodies, eggheads or white homogenized clones which took mannequins outside the conventional reality they had possessed up to that point. The traditional waspy and girdled portrayals shifted to appearing more surreal. Salvador Dali (1904-1989), in his mannequin art display “The Water Taxi” at the 1938 International Exposition of Surrealism in Paris, created a new stage for mannequins. Another artist, Andy Warhol, who began his career as a window dresser, broke the mold as an innovative artist. Both artists crossed over from what was considered low art (window dressing) to high art (fine art), which reflected and influenced the cultural mindset of the ‘80s. Author Frank Baum, who also worked as a window dresser, is most famous for writing The Wizard of Oz, but he also penned an intriguing book titled Aunt Jane’s Nieces at Work about mannequins and how they reflected importance in the merchandising industry. He was an advocate of the innovative use of mannequins to create an alluring romance between merchandise and merchandising. Yanya’s portrayal of mannequins as an art form arose from her fascination with and attuned sensitivity to the fashion world, coupled with her desire to express her understanding of the people and the plethora of unsettling representations. Their non–consumerist functions are another aspect she finds appealing. Mannequin’s idealized bodies have always given shape to our materialized fantasies, since the time of ancient

Egypt. For example, as a result of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922, archeologists found iconic mannequins used to display his prized jewelry and clothing. Mannequins, throughout history, have embodied a strange blend of adoration, discomfort and, in some sense, abject terror. During the Industrial Revolution, mannequins were made of wicker and papier–mâché but proved to be clumsy. In later years, they became heavier, made from wood, iron and wax. With the onset of WWI, there was a demand for practicality, requiring a relaxed appearance, movable limbs and more realistic variations. During the 1920s, there arose a trend of gender–bending modernism, where the concept of the normal straight–laced woman was rejected and replaced by the boyish and androgynous flapper, emulating the transition of preference for a more unconventional lifestyle. Simultaneously, they revealed the influence of Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements, acknowledging geometric renditions of the human form. In the 1930s, where there existed such a gap between wealth and poverty brought by the great depression, some mannequins were designed to be more conservative, while others had more glamorous features such as high cheekbones and oval faces with a wider variety of poses and expressions. The 1940s brought taxes and rationing, which evoked a somber expression displaying a sense of patriotic duty. From 1950 through 1960, there exploded upon the mannequin scene a burgeoning sense of more accentuated breasts and the Barbie image of the perfect hourglass figure, emulating Marilyn Monroe. In 1959, the American toy company Mattel manufactured the classic Barbie doll, selling 3 dolls per second. She and her counterpart Ken are still highly popular collectable toys.

During the ‘60s, mannequins were influenced by supermodels and constructed of super light materials. The ‘60s embodied the changing beauty standards of the sexual revolution but still rendered the shape and size of the average consumer. However, this period highlights the “supermodel” era, where stick thin “Twiggy” reigned supreme. During the ‘70s, faceless clones were the standard and were typically black, white or grey in color. By the ‘80s, society emulated the toned bodies of Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons; dressing like a tennis player or workout maven was considered cool. It was the arrival of velour sweat pants, leg warmers and Nike brand clothing. The ‘90s brought on the “heroin– chick” trend in mannequins, which were very toned but stick–thin, bordering on anorexic. From 2000 to today it’s a moot question whether mannequins are a case of art imitating life or a case of life imitating art. The transformation has dramatically evolved for both the woman personified and the mannequin. They have changed and adapted to our modern time. For some people, nude mannequins seem sad and creepy. A nude mannequin does not ride on the merry–go–round of materialistic acquisition, seeming to serve no function other than to allude to the inherent purposelessness which consumerism imputes to real people who don’t, can’t or won’t fritter away their money. For the artist, a nude mannequin is a muse with endless possibilities and equates an empty canvas where the borders between low art and high art are defined. The power of mannequins and the fantasy worlds they inhabit will continue to hold strong as they reject conventional and cultural attitudes, reinforcing social norms and ideals for years to come.

alk through the threshold of Tenaya Lodge and enter the past. The grand foyer space brings to mind the hallowed halls of yore, the mead halls of Vikings or the Round Tables of Arthur, exuding the warmth of an eternal gathering space—but with modern comforts for which Arthur would have sold his sword. Glittering candelabras and a glowing fire bask the open room in warm light, ushering valets and stewardesses gather to assist you, and, if you listen carefully, you can even hear the glassy drop of ice into your Old Fashioned in the next room. For a moment, you forget that you’re not a great huntsman returning from a foraging trip and that all you have is luggage, not a wagonload of pelts, to unload.

Its this type of artistry, the ability to help guests devise their perfect escape from the everyday, that Tenaya specializes in. Of course, Tenaya understands that the initial draw for visitors is the Lodge’s proximity to Yosemite National Park (it’s just a short ten minute drive to the Park’s entrance), but it’s the resort itself that will have you begging for one more day, one more trip. Whether you’re looking for an adventure–filled weekend or a relaxing vacation, Tenaya Lodge is the perfect headquarters for you and your family. Named for Chief Tenaya of the local Ahwahnechee people, Tenaya Lodge opened twenty–five years ago as the High Sierra region’s premier Four Diamond resort. Since then, Tenaya has expanded and undergone countless remodels (including a current major renovation and modernization of guest rooms), but never lost sight of its initial intentions: their fealty to the land and history of Yosemite while providing the most comfortable, luxurious experience for every guest. Part of the Lodge’s success stems from their skilled, round–the– clock concierge and their chock–full guide to local activities, both on–site and nearby. Everyone knows that Yosemite is a mecca for

hikers, expert and novice alike, but Tenaya’s concierge can help you plan countless advetures. If you want to experience nature without leaving the resort, Tenaya’s guides can take you on a mountain– biking excursion on the 60 miles of trails surrounding the hotel, strap you in for a quick climb on their own rock–climbing wall, help hone your archery skills, or point out constellations on a night hike. If you’ve got your sights set on Yosemite, they can set you up with expert fly–fishers and rock–climbers to guide you through the Park’s rivers and rocks. Even in winter you can enjoy the great outdoors with sledding, sleigh rides and a roaring fire, complete with fluffy marshmallows and s’more supplies. After that long day of exploring the surrounding forests and canyons, you’ll want more than just a soft place to lay your head. Your aching body and sore muscles will find solace at Ascent Spa. Descend into the lower level of the Lodge, where a calming natural palette and beaming estheticians greet you at the Spa. With a steam room, sauna and plush robes, you’ll be completely relaxed before your treatment even begins. Ascent recently unveiled a new spa menu with a variety of treatments gaining their names and ingredients form the local landscape. Tenaya Lodge is seamlessly set in the natural curves of the High Sierras.

he Bridalveil Massage Renewal is the most pampering massage treatment; bask in the gentle hands of your masseuse as she kneads away knots, then slathers your dry skin and scalp in moisturizing, natural and calming balms. Every treatment at Ascent Spa includes personalized touches and local essences to pamper your trek–worn limbs. After all that exploring and relaxing, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite. With five unique dining options, every palate will be pleased. Drop the kids off with the Lodge’s caregivers and head to relaxed Jackalopes Bar & Grill for a signature cocktail or pint from local South Gate Brewery. Couples will love the upscale Embers, a kid–free restaurant with a meticulously designed menu perfected by the resort’s Executive Chef, Frederick Clabaugh. Relax in the romantic, intimate atmosphere and savor the local flavors—but make sure to finish the meal with Bananas Diablo, a fiery dish prepared table–side. If you’re looking for a more family–friendly meal, Tenaya provides plenty of casual options. Enjoy fresh and local produce and meats around Sierra Restaurant’s limestone fireplace or on the manicured patio; stop in early for the restaurant’s sprawling breakfast buffet. In the mood for every family’s favorite: pizza? Timberloft Pizzeria is the perfect spot for a slice of pie. And if you’re in a hurry to get out on the trail, swing by Parkside Deli for delicious options to–go. When the sun sets on another day of adventure, return to your room for a night of well–deserved rest. Tenaya’s rooms vary from rustic to modern, sleek to homey, but they all share a common element: comfort. Lounge by your own personal fireplace, loll in a steaming bubble bath, or simply climb into downy sheets with a good book; whatever your nighttime rituals, they’re sure to be outdone while at Tenaya. When you pack your bags and prepare to leave the Lodge, lighten your heavy heart with the knowledge that you can always return. Envision your wedding on the Lodge’s balcony, the sprawling mountains and pines an everlasting backdrop; picture your company’s retreats in the resort’s massive ballroom; imagine bringing your kids to Tenaya for the holidays, their faces aglow with the magic of gingerbread houses and sledding and hot chocolate. Tenaya Lodge isn’t just a resort to visit or a stop on a road trip; its a home you can return to for years to come and your ultimate escape from the everyday. (Clockwise from left): Start your day with room service and finish it with Cedar Plank Salmon at Embers; the foyer serves a grand entrance; experience the outdoors with suggestions from the concierge, like white water rafting; enjoy rustic comfort in your room; table side preparation wows at Embers; Tenaya specializes in special events like weddings; natural, local elements are infused into spa treatments at Ascent; Summerdale BBQ is a fun dinner experience in the summer.

Let’s Taco ‘Bout Tacos SAN DIEGO OFFERS MORE THAN THE TRADITIONAL, TIRED TACO

T

B Y E M I LY G L A S E R

here’s one little four letter word that gets every San Diegan excited; the mere mention of it can make our hearts beat faster and our mouths water. That word? Taco. Every one of us has our favorite taco shop, our favorite style, even our favorite tortilla. We’ll argue the merits of our preferred taco with anyone who dares oppose its supremacy—but isn’t that boring? We think it’s time to switch things up, and countless restaurants across San Diego are giving us the answer to our freshly–proposed prayers. These four taco shops, spread across the county, are challenging our ideas about traditional tacos and awakening our taste buds to the possibilities of the humble taco.

TACOS PERLA, North Park For many San Diegans, the old adage could easily be changed to “What happens in Tijuana, stays in Tijuana;” luckily for us, that isn’t true of Tacos Perla, a concept formed on the streets of TJ and brought to North Park in 2014. Founders of the taco shop understood from the beginning that they had to make Tacos Perla unique to withstand the howling winds of competition, so early on they focused on experience as well as flavor. As Jon Ritt, the brand’s designer, said, “We’re kind of filling that niche of high design with authenticity of the street food.” Step into the meticulously designed interior, its palette designed

around the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, and sip on a Mango Habanero Michelada as you decide on your tacos. The Tacos: Of course, there are the traditionals, but the non– traditionals offer a flavorful, fun taco–ride. Take The Ocho: braised– then–grilled octopus with poblano, pesto and cheese; this isn’t your mother’s taco shop! We also love El Futbol, smoked albacore with green chile pipian, jack cheese and red onion, or try any of the tacos stuffed into a fire–roasted chile for a spicier alternative to a tortilla! tacosperla.com

GALAXY TACO, La Jolla Galaxy Taco was born from a verified passion for those foods that hail from below the border, but this modern spot is all–California. From their devotion to non–GMO and organic foods to spunky, colorful decor, Galaxy Taco is defying the stereotypes and embracing its locality. The tacos may steal the show here, but it’s the massive tequila and mezcal selection (one of the largest and most varied in the county) that keeps you in your seat long after the last crumb tumbles. The Tacos: Galaxy Taco serves it’s fare in the delicious bosom of house–made tortillas, handmade from non–GMO heirloom corn, the masa ground fresh daily. The innards of the tacos are where Galaxy’s creativity shines; try the tender Lamb Barbacoa, with onion, tomato–mint salsa and yogurt, or The Tacolandia, which features marinated, braised and seared pork shoulder, jalapeño slaw and chicharron. Even the classics are special, like the eternal favorite Carne Asada, where the traditional guacamole and onion are paired with a spicy smoked bone marrow salsa. Plus, there’s plenty of vegetarian fare (even meat lovers will swoon over the Birria de Res, with pickled onion, cilantro and cabbage). galaxytaco.com

(Clockwise from this page): Tacos Perla’s award–winning salsas and Mango-Habanero Michelada pair well with all their tacos; Galaxy Tacos serves their fare in fresh, house–made, GMO–free tortillas; don’t let the graffitied exterior fool you, Pokez in East Village serves up some of the best vegetarian tacos in San Diego.

POKEZ, East Village As the saying goes, it’s an oldie but a goodie. Pokez has been slinging some of the finest Mexican fare—vegetarian, vegan and carnivorous—in San Diego since 1994. Step through the sticker–laden door and grab a seat in the graffitied interior for an authentic piece of downtown SD. Wash down the gratis chips and salsa with a pitcher of sangria as you peruse the perfectly curated menu, where local favorites like tofu fajitas and California burritos go head–to–head. The Tacos: As a subtitle of their menu declares, Pokez’s strong–suit is “the unusual usuals.” If you’re in the mood for a deliciously different classic, order up a Mahi Mahi, Shrimp, or Carne Asada taco. But this is where the vegetarians can come to roost: try the Veggie, Potato, or Tofu, Potato and Mushroom tacos; they may sound basic, but they are anything but. Whatever you choose, make sure you throw in an extra side of their famous cabbage salad; its crunchy, fresh and the perfect palate–cleanser for that moment between tacos. pokezrestaurant.com CONTINUED ON PAGE 68

¡SALUD!, Barrio Logan When you combine passions for Chicano culture, lowrider lifestyle and tacos, you’re bound to get the perfect, authentic eatery. After the overwhelming success of the San Diego Taco Company, founder Ernie Becerra decided to open ¡SALUD! in the century– old Bank of Italy building in historically Hispanic Barrio Logan. With an unparalleled devotion to the craft and culture surrounding San Diego and her tacos, ¡SALUD! offers the real–deal to those of us who are tired of trendier concepts. Grab a seat at a communal picnic table and start with some traditional fare, like Mexican Street Corn or Frijoles de Olla, before digging into your tacos. The Tacos: Start with the Taco de Barrio, carne guisado topped with frijol and nopal and presented in a hand–pressed flour tortilla. Then go for the classic Carnitas—mouth–watering pork served on a handmade tortilla with avo–crema, cilantro, onions and pico de gallo—or go meatless with The Veggie Taco, featuring soyrizo and potato, red bell peppers, onion, avocado, julienned peppers and cilantro. saludsd.com

New Brews News SAN DIEGO’S BEST NEW BREWERIES BY CAITLIN JOHNSON

S

an Diego is a top contender nationwide for being a microbrewery mecca, with new locations popping up throughout the county all the time. Here are just a few of the newest up–and–coming hotspots that are sure to quench the thirst of even the trendiest hipsters this side of Portland. So grab a pint, sit back, relax and let FINE Magazine give you a tour that’s sure to tantalize your tastebuds. Bagby Beer Company

Combining a love for food with an impressive history of craft brewing expertise, Bagby Beer Company is a new addition to the craft brew scene in Oceanside. Owners Jeff and Dande Bagby celebrated the pub’s one year anniversary last month, and the 20–plus house brews paired with a full menu reflect the company’s tagline of “world–class beer, simple food done well and inviting hospitality.” Perhaps the most intriguing part of Bagby’s impressive selection is the names given to its original beers, such as “Dork Squad,” an American IPA “dedicated to the beer geek in all of us,” and the “Goon Brigade,” a fruity and hoppy blend with a malt backbone. The names may be silly, but the beer is serious stuff. Jeff takes his brewing knowledge gained from his time spent with Pizza Port in Carlsbad and years of brewing on his own and applies it to Bagby Beer, where the pub is more than just a place to enjoy a pint after a long day. “For us, it’s more about the experience of the beer, and how people are able to connect with one another and really appreciate the origins of what they’re drinking and eating,” said Dande, Bagby Beer’s Director of Pub Operations. “We’re just trying to do something a little bit different in terms of how we present our product.” That philosophy is reflected in the pub’s varied menu, which includes woodstone pizzas, classic burgers, delectable desserts and more, and is emphasized in the continuous festivals and events the pub participates in regularly. This year Bagby Beer hosted the sixth annual Brewbies Festival benefitting breast cancer prevention, put on a five–course inaugural beer dinner and hosted the 2015 Zwanze Day, to name a few. OPPOSITE PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Fall Brewery’s modern aesthetic; Fall offers beer for every palate; Half Door offers guests a lot more than beer with full dinner and lunch menus and a glowing sign to draw you in; collect Fall’s bottle caps; Bagby’s Wiseacre wheat stands alone; enjoy views of San Diego’s skyline with Half Door’s brews; both Bagby and Culture offer delicious brews to locals.

“It’s definitely about community, too,” said Dande. “That changes the game, keeps all of us sort of interested and engaged in what we’re doing, especially when there’s an event that has to do with a nonprofit or a charity; it reminds you what the craft beer industry is capable of.”

Culture Brewing Co

There’s a culture of brewing at Culture Brewing Co, one that embraces stimulating conversation, good times and, of course, quality craft brews. With two bustling locations (the flagship tasting room in Solana Beach and the newly–opened Ocean Beach locale with a similar look and vibe), patrons can soak up the SoCal lifestyle with more than 40 in–house brews. “We’re trying to create and keep an atmosphere that allows people to conversate with each other and talk with our bartenders and be educated about what we do,” said Carole Busby, Marketing Director for Culture Brewing Co. She explained that simple things, such as not having TVs and employing a friendly and educated workforce, are what cultivate that conversational culture. Busby and her staff encourage guests to learn how to order beer and only hire employees that truly care about the microbrew way of life. “We all know that the beer has to be great to survive in this industry, but the interaction that the customers have with employees is one of our biggest success stories for us,” she said. “A smile goes a long way.” Culture always has a rotation of 10 to 15 of its own beers on tap in each location. It boasts a wide variety of hoppy IPAs, malty ales, tasty Belgians and a handful of rich stouts, along with a few barrel– aged barley wines and sours. The special release “Keyhole IPA” is a favorite among guests, featuring roasted grapefruit rinds that add a refreshing citrus kick. Culture’s “Mosaic IPA” is another favorite, a moderately bitter California IPA that also offers a taste of citrus. “It’s very important for us to keep a balanced [beer] menu so that we’re able to accommodate everyone’s palate that comes in,” said Busby. Along with the extensive selection of brews and inviting atmosphere, Culture also embraces the communities of San Diego through its First Friday’s Culture + Art + Beer events that showcase a different local artist every month in each tasting room. One of Culture’s beers is usually paired with the art, creating a casual and inviting experience that truly celebrates the microbrew lifestyle.

Half Door Brewing Co.

Just a pitch away from Petco Park in East Village is Half Door Brewing Co., housed in a quaint, two–story historical building on the corner of Island Avenue and 9th Street. The craft brewhouse is steeped in Irish custom that’s meticulously upheld by the Drayne family and only recently opened its doors to thirsty San Diegans in January of this year. Half Door’s current beer selection is simple. Fourteen original brews are rotated, including several types of ales (a pale, a brown and a golden), a milk stout and the “Colemans Stout,” which is in the vein of Guinness. Father Ted is a Belgian blonde with a blend of wheat and Bohemian pilsner. And since this is San Diego, Half Door features a Cal Ale IPA called “House of Hops” that includes Simcoe, Nelson Sauvin, Citra and Amarillo hops.

72

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

“We’re trying to keep an Irish tradition—kind of homey, session–style beers,” said Daniel Drayne, Head Brewer for Half Door. “We keep it pretty high–quality with session beers that you can have a few of.” The brewery isn’t pigeonholing itself in Irish tradition, however. It’s always experimenting with new techniques, ingredients and ideas in order to keep up with the local microbrew scene that’s constantly evolving. Drayne and his brewers take pride in the fact that Half Door does just about everything on its own, including growing the grains that are meticulously crafted into the ever– changing brews for patrons to enjoy. The focus is more on the process of creating a brew rather than the ingredients, he said, and explained how different brewing techniques result in uniquely different products. This balance between new school experimentation and old school tradition is what brings Half Door out of the tried–and–true Irish pub mold and into today’s craft beer scene. Though its doors have only been open a few short months, Half Door Brewing is already well on its way to making its mark on the industry.

Fall Brewing Company

Breaking away from the more corporate and money–hungry feel of the beer industry, Fall Brewing Company in North Park is yet another promising sensation in the San Diego microbrew scene. It opened its doors to the public in November of last year to “a pretty decent fanfare,” said co-founder and president Ray Astamendi. “Everyone seems to be enjoying the fact that we’re here,” said Astamendi, one of three brewers who left Saint Archer and established Fall Brewing on the premise that beer should be good, fun and honest. There are currently 15 beers on CO2 and Nitro in rotation with something for everyone. The “Plenty For All” pilsner is a California Common style brew that delivers a clean and crisp rustic edge, while the “Green Hat IPA’s” Citra, Centennial, Crystal and Simcoe hops combine to form a San Diego–style brew. If you’re looking for something darker, try the vanilla bean and Dark Horse coffee stout. While there’s currently no space for a kitchen in the 750–square– foot tasting room, Fall feeds guests by bringing in local food trucks and nearby restaurants. There are also recurring foodie events such as Sushi Sunday with Sushi Uno, Spinelli Pizza Night and Taco Tuesday with Tacos La Mezcla. Astamendi said they’re hoping to expand beer production to bottles sometime in the future, as well as trying their hand at sour aging at a facility in Chula Vista. It’s one step at a time, however, and for now Fall Brewing is content focusing on its current success. “We’d like to contribute back to our neighborhood, to our community as much as we can, and also represent craft beer and what it is to be a craft brewer in San Diego,” Astamendi said. “We really just want to brew, have fun, make good beer and be good, honest people.” Having so many wonderful breweries in our backyard can make choosing one a problem, but it’s a good problem to have. There’s no telling what the future holds for San Diego as a brew capital of America, but from what we’ve seen so far it looks as bright as a crisp pale ale on a summer’s day.

A Festival of Our Own

AN INTERVIEW WITH SAN DIEGO FILM FESTIVAL PRODUCER TONYA MANTOOTH BY ERICA MINER

N

ot every film festival has an eight–time Emmy winner as its programming director. The 2015 San Diego Film Festival is fortunate to have local resident Tonya Mantooth, Executive Vice President and Director of Programming for the nonprofit San Diego Film Foundation, the producers of SDFF, on board. Last year, SDFF was the first in California to premiere the Academy Award–winning film The Imitation Game. This year, SDFF has partnered with Academy Award–winner Susan Sarandon and filmmaker Thomas Morgan for the Social Justice Initiative panel. A first for SDFF, the Initiative is committed to highlight socially relevant causes through documentary film. Erica Miner: Are you a native San Diegan? What led you to produce films and to work with the San Diego Film Foundation? Tonya Mantooth: I was born in Texas, grew up in Santa Barbara and moved to San Diego to attend San Diego State University. As a business and music major, I split my days between statistics and practicing classical piano. After graduation and three years on the road as a musician, I came back to San Diego to work in marketing, ultimately heading up acquisitions for a film company. From there I focused on producing and launched a commercial production company here. My company produced national TV campaigns for over a decade when a long–time friend and director asked me to produce his feature film. At first I was apprehensive but ultimately loved the challenge of such a big undertaking. Since then, I’ve been executive producer on four feature films, one of which later spawned a Nickelodeon series. In 2012, the founders of SDFF wanted someone new to take over running the festival. Three colleagues and I (Dale Strack, Kevin Leap and Patti Judd) took on the challenge. We believed San Diego deserved a large–scale festival at the level of Tribeca or Palm Springs. We continue to be committed to making that happen. In four years we’ve grown SDFF by 500 percent, honoring individuals like Judd Apatow, Alan Arkin, Mariel Hemingway and Beau Bridges, and premiering dozens of studio films that went on to be Oscar winners. Through your Mantooth Studios, you have produced both commercial and feature film projects. Do you prefer one format to another? I like both. The challenge of a TV or web spot is to tell a complete story in a short time span. Every word and every edit has to be meticulously

chosen. I love that challenge. Producing a feature film is an immersive experience. It consumes you. Every day you work to solve problems and handle the details while still keeping the creative vision in mind. How many submissions did you receive this year? We received over 1,700 submissions from 65 countries. Our screening team, programmers and I watch films from February right up to when we announce our schedule in September. It’s amazing to see the range of work and hard to cull down to 110 films, but a thrill to contact filmmakers and let them know we want to screen their film. Last year more than 500 filmmakers, directors and actors from around the world attended their screenings and participated in Q&As. SDFF offers attendees unique insight and a first look at these fantastic films. What are your criteria for choosing those films? Two things: good storytelling and quality production value. With

cameras and technology so accessible nowadays, more filmmakers can afford to make a film. The craft of good filmmaking doesn’t have to cost a lot of money if your story is compelling.

Who will participate in the Initiative Panel and Workshop? Joining the Reframed Pictures team are Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Kweku Mandela (Out of Africa Films), Independent Spirit Award nominee Dawn Porter (Gideon’s Army) and the much–anticipated filmmaker of India’s Daughter, Leslee Udwin. Anything you would like to add? We are really proud of SDFF’s growth and potential. It is now a significant asset for San Diego that can add millions of dollars and jobs to our economy. San Diegans no longer need to travel to Tribeca or Sundance to experience a film festival with major film premieres, filmmakers, celebrities and more—there is now one in their backyard. The entertainment industry is also excited and supportive of our growth. When we meet with studio heads or distributors to talk about the festival, they always say “What a great city… who doesn’t love San Diego?” They like coming here as much as we like having them. Now in its 14th year, SDFF begins on September 30th and runs through October 4th. “For more information, visit sdfilmfest.com.”

How did the Social Justice Initiative develop and what is the philosophy behind it? At last year’s festival, filmmaker Thomas Morgan (“Best Documentary” for Waiting for Mamu) and I were talking about films that highlight global social issues. He had partnered with Susan Sarandon to launch Reframed Pictures, a company focused on producing documentaries with lasting social impact. Thomas, Susan and I talked about partnering on this initiative to reach a larger audience through SDFF. I am working closely with them to curate a powerful film track during the festival including Jack Robbins’ (Susan Sarandon’s son with Tim Robbins) documentary directorial debut about homelessness, Storied Streets. The idea of bringing international documentary filmmakers together for an in–depth panel discussion was also exciting. We plan to expand the initiative next year by taking these films and filmmakers out to high schools.

It Can’t Be Fall Yet BY BOB MOREY

O

ctober is one of those months where many transitions takes place. Summer turns to fall—at least for the majority of the country; baseball ends with the World Series and football gets fully underway; hockey, basketball and soccer all start their seasons. It’s also the month where most of our local performing arts begin their 2015–16 seasons. The San Diego Opera is already off to a fast start. On September 19th, young Opera Star Rene Barbera, who stole the hearts of both the fans and critics with his performance at the Opera’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, played to a packed Balboa Theatre in his North American Recital debut, where he once again wowed spectators. I, along with many others, anticipate seeing this amazing young tenor on our stages again very soon. Without rest, on Saturday, November 14th, The SDO will present Opera Star Patricia Racette at the Balboa Theatre with Diva On Detour. Dipping into her cabaret past, Racette delivers this critically– acclaimed event for one night only, showcasing the music 0f Cole Potter, George Gershiwn, Stephen Sondheim and Edith Piaf. Maestro Ling picks up the baton as The San Diego Symphony returns from their sabbatical and launches into their 2015–16

season on Friday, October 9th with a weekend of Strauss, Mozart and Prokofiev with special guest Yuja Wang on the piano. It wouldn’t be October without a little Halloween fun and the Symphony is giving us just that with Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas on October 30th and 31st. Guest Conductor Bill Conti will lead the Symphony through Danny Elfman’s romping score as the film is projected on the big screen. These events fill up quickly! Up in the park, Academy and Tony Award–winner Mercedes Ruehl is starring in Full Gallop at the Old Globe. This factual story of the irrepressible Diana Vreeland first commanded the stage of the Globe in a world premiere in 1995. This year’s presentation will run through October 25th in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. The San Diego Musical Theatre’s staging of La Cage Aux Folles is a glittering and fast–stepping extravaganza mixed with a touching tale of one family’s struggle to stay together, all set in a glitzy nightclub in St. Tropez. Designed after Harvey Fierstein’s book and with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, La Cage Aux Folles is a night of fun that’s running through October 11th at the Spreckels Theatre. Liz Lerman’s Healing Wars is a multi–sensory experience that blends dance, storytelling and multimedia in an exploration of how soldiers and healers cope with the physical and psychological wounds of war. With intense themes and performances, Healing Wars is running at the La Jolla Playhouse through October 25th. For most of us, the hardest question this month won’t be what shows we’ll see (the answer is all of them, of course!), but what we’ll be for Halloween. Trick–or–Treat, my friends!
