EDITOR’S NOTE

EDITOR’S NOTE A Time of Reflection.............. It’s hard to believe that summer is in its final stages. As I sit here writing on my balcony, the sun is radiating down on my page, warming my already tan legs, and making me lose my train of thought once again. Could school really be starting in a couple weeks? Is it really over? My ‘thingsto-do list’ tells me so, as does my blackberry calendar and all other means of organization set to ruin my current state of mind, whose dial I have set on the “time-to-indulge” setting. I was just getting used to it; like that moment on vacation when you finally settle in comfortably, breath in blissfully and exhale. The azure blue sky seems to agree with me; its hue so mesmerizing I am forced to close my eyes and let go of any responsible thoughts. For the moment I am swept away, just as summer intended. That being said, fall, or reality, is knocking. Like the old saying goes, ‘time waits for no one’. Maybe the lesson here is that it doesn’t matter how much time you’ve spent getting away, just as long as you’ve made a point to do so. When I reflect on this summer, certain images come to mind, like family picnics, ice cream, beach outings, long naps and road trips, to name a few. I know these moments in time are priceless. Whether you’re 5 years old or 50, summer gives us permission to dream and reminds us to relish the ‘now’. With Fall coming into my peripheral view, I’m not content to let it end! School schedules, fall sports, even “must-see TV” will have their time and place in the sun, but there’s still time for us to have ours....

16 FINE magazine • www.FINEsd.com

In this month’s issue, we looked at the best places to dine in Del Mar, highlighting restaurants, old and new, that take advantage of San Diego’s seasonal treasures at local farms. After a winning day at the track or breezy Sunday at the polo fields, try dinner or drinks at one of these establishments for a happening/healthy experience. Haven’t made it to a classic summer garden party yet? Grab your hat and head out to the polo fields where you can experience the light atmosphere of the club and the amazing beauty of the horses in play. On August 29th, FINE will sponsor the USPA Rossmore Cup. This is a nationally recognized event with extensive media coverage and some of the best polo players from around the world. This month’s fashion column features some of the best fashion boutiques in Rancho Santa Fe, so there’s no excuse not to be seen and look fabulous. And don’t miss our profile on Steve Lewandowski, resident Announcer who will celebrate his 20th season with the club. More features on old world luxury home designs, highperformance electric cars from San Diego’s own, Tesla Motors, and an impressive Fall fashion review (if you’re not afraid to peek) will keep that to-do list at arm’s length. So don’t be afraid to keep that dial on the “time-to-indulge” setting for a few more days. It may just be what we all need before the inevitable shift comes. This way, you can exhale a sigh of relief that you made some precious summer memories - all before taking in that first breath of brisk, fall air.

carved chairs and matching love seat from Bali surround a raised Limestone gas firepit. Custom fabrics were used on the cushions and draperies that coordinated perfectly with the interior, making a seamless transition. The main room’s true focal point was the huge limestone fireplace which was originally white. The Designer refinished it using a dark bronze-toned marble. The surrounding walls were painted black on black (a mix of flat and high gloss), and then stenciled with huge damask patterns. The result was drama personified! The enormous fireplace screen was custom duplicated by local artisans to look like the original antique version. An exquisite cut crystal hung above the 18th century carved Italian sofa and chairs that were reupholstered in rich black velvet velour and supple black leather. I couldn’t help but admire the silver crackled finish with antique pewter nailhead detailing. It was all amazing to the eye, as well as the touch! Other dramatic pieces included French barstools, silk draperies, Venetian dragons on the drapery hardware and various antiques. Unique artwork and spectacular lighting fixtures helped play a vital role in creating a truly inspiring space. Another local artisan added faux “cracks” in the walls using a fine paint brush and rags. To hear about the finer details, not to mention time and effort put in gave me a greater appreciation of both design, Designer and the artists involved in such an undertaking. The antique parlor is a room you won’t find in most modern homes, yet this was transformed into the most vital and unique boudoire, and I think, speaks to the old world charm this house exudes. The Designer took full advantage by reinventing it with tiger striped chenille and caramel colored leather furniture with bronze nail heads. The custom made bedding included the richest selection of fabrics, colors and textures, including a jaguar print chenille embroidered with gold damask and throw pillows made from silks, velvets and jacquards using gorgeous brush fringe, tassels and covered buttons. I was so relaxed, it was hard to leave this peaceful and luxurious setting.

Return to the Simple Things in Life Through The Luxury that is...

RANCHO

SANTA FE article by: Machel Penn Shull

Each day San Diegans are flocking to the beaches; the gaslamp district is going off with the bustle of tourists and excitement of Padres baseball; and directly west, race track enthusiasts are hobnobbing in Del Mar like there’s no tomorrow. This may well represent a typical summer in our fine city, however, just away from the coast, in one of the wealthiest enclaves in America, Rancho Santa Fe residents are going about the business of summer in another way; soaking up their favorite past times quietly, savoring each moment sans crowds, and possibly tipping back a glass of champagne under the backdrop of bougainvillea vines and resident song birds. So, when did the countryside and simpler things in life become so chic? Necessity begets harmony, and in Rancho Santa Fe, it was par for the course. Where else can you find such wealth and luxury running alongside the simple beauty of nature, its wilderness and the greatest of all real estate amenities: space. Known for prestigious, Tuscany mansions, this community commands many celebrities and other local residents to enjoy the rolling hills, blue skies, horse and hiking trails, and other hobbies that cater to its outdoor way of life. Not everybody can live in this unique and wonderful place, however, everyone can experience the beauty of this town and its activities. Here are some recreational hobbies that you can enjoy this summer under the shaded eucalyptus trees.

HIKING: San Dieguito Park’s entrance is adjacent to the exclusive gates of The Crosby. Jill Drouin, an Encinitas resident that also works in the Rancho Santa Fe community recommends this hiking trail to other Southern Californian residents. “There is a variety of hiking on the trails; beginner and experienced hikers both can enjoy them,” she says. “Some of the trails have shaded areas that open up to the lagoon and a beautiful view of the ocean in the distance. Other parts of the San Dieguito trails have more rugged and hilly terrain, making it ideal for a hiker looking for a more rigorous hike.” Another favorite aspect of this particular park is the abundance of wild birds. “From the Great Egrets to the Black Crowned Night Herons in the lagoon,” she says, “the possibility of bird sightings is endless.”

GOLF: Rancho Santa Fe resident Phil Mickelson can be seen golfing during his down time from the PGA tour at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. To join this country club, you must live within The Covenant (or know someone who does). There have been many famous golf tournaments hosted in the Ranch. From the “Battle of the Bridges” located at The Bridges to the recent ‘Drew Brees Celebrity Golf tournament at Morgan Run’, celebrities and local residents enjoy some of the finest golf putting greens in the country. The Bridges was recently listed by Golf Magazine as one of the “Top 40 Golf Communities in America.”

HORSEBACK RIDING/POLO: It’s not unusual to see a horseback rider cross your path in these parts. Slow and easy, these western-to-equestrian horseback riders enjoy miles of dirt trails that wind around the lush golf course to hidden paths behind the hills. But this is just one place to view or ride horses. Many don’t know it, but the San Diego Polo Club was originally named “The Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club,” (founded in 1986). The summer polo season runs 14 weeks through October 3rd. Polo matches are every Sunday, and general tickets are just $10 at the door. Be there to enjoy your own glass of champagne while you stomp divots during half time. The Club also offers polo lessons, and the first lesson is free. Like any good partnership, the luxury side of Rancho Santa Fe will always be there to entice and astound. But the next time you’re looking for a nature excursion with a touch of luxury in San Diego, think of Rancho Santa Fe.

With all this small

community has to offer, you too might trade in some of the hustle and bustle of summer for a quiet moment or two under a eucalyptus tree.

Celebrating 12 years of Real Estate Experience. My first introduction to real estate was working in my dad’s real estate office as a kid. Real Estate has always been a fit for me. I couldn’t wait to sell my first home! It’s been 12 years since, and I can honestly say my passion for selling homes is still growing strong. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I have my dream job and I am so grateful. Please allow me to do what I love by offering you a home evaluation today. I love San Diego and currently live in La Jolla with my family including 2 kids. I serve on the board of W.R.O.T.E ministries and volunteer throughout the local communities. Giving back is a big part of what I do and very important in my life.

STEVE LEWANDOWSKI celebrates 20 years at the SDPC article by: l.a. nelson

Whether on the field swinging a mallot or in the press box behind a mic, one thing’s certain; Steve Lewandowski has made a career out of his passion - the game of Polo. On any given Sunday, you’ll find Steve in the press box at the San Diego Polo Club, which has had a presence in San Diego for over 100 years. This summer’s 14-week season will mark Steve’s 20th year as the resident announcer for the Club. This title, as well as ‘master of ceremonies’ and ‘auctioneer’ are accomplishments that Steve is quite proud of, but also a bit surprising coming from a self-professed late-bloomer. “I didn’t start playing polo until 1991,” says Steve. “I was 32 at the time and introduced to the game by an old girlfriend, who was a 3rd generation polo player.” Prior to that, Steve admits having little experience, let alone training with horses. As he puts it, his only horse-riding experience was “a horse-driven hay ride at a high school Halloween party.” Not exactly the horse ‘pedigree’ you’d expect from an internationally-known and respected Polo Announcer, yet in Steve’s opinion, this is the charm and beauty of polo. By contrast, when most people think of polo, certain cliché’s come to mind: high society, wealthly Ralph Lauren-looking blue-bloods... anything but “accessibility”. But this, says Steve, is the biggest misnomer: “People think polo is about the movie, Pretty Woman. They don’t realize how family oriented and accessible polo is. That’s the biggest shock people find is that it’s not as snooty as they expect. There’s a lot of great, good people involved with the club. People are almost disarmed when they meet the regulars. Our biggest challenge is getting people to the club so they can overcome these misconceptions because its a lot of fun, both socially and athletically.” San Diegans curious about the game need not be shy. As Steve put it, “Polo is the best kept secret in San Diego

county, and it shouldn’t be. The first lesson is free, so you have nothing to lose. You just show up and play; they have the horses, helmets, mallots, ball. They teach you how to get on the saddle and where to hold the reins. The most insidious thing they do is let you play a scrimmage the very first day! From the outside looking in, it looks like you’re going about 2 mph. But when you’re a neophyte to polo the way I was, it feels like you’re going mach 2. It’s exhilarating to be able to move the horse and hit the ball. The horses they choose for the school are “bomb-proof”. They know what to do. When you wind up to swing, they move their head. I can’t think of a more enjoyable way to spend a sunday afternoon.”

own Cavalry that utilized the game of polo to maintain cavalry warfare skills. Steve points out, there are a few gentlemen still involved with the San Diego Polo Club, now in their 80’s, who were part of the ROTC cavalry in the 1940’s. This footnote represents of a different era and rich history, indeed. Speaking of, Steve has his own unique journey that led him from the field to the press box. The same year he started playing polo, he was asked to fill in as announcer for a Del Mar arena game. A talent agent in the crowd took notice, and the rest you could say, is history. Steve continued to play polo for many years, but it was at that moment that he realized he could passionately participate in polo from behind the microphone. He’s been giving fans the play-by-play ever since. Steve just came from Cabo San Lucas and has announced all across the U.S., including Ireland and Mexico. He has an open invitation to announce in England and was recently chosen as the English announcer for the World Cup of Polo, which is the highest level of international polo at the amateur level and quite an honor. In 2008, he was the English announcer for the World Cup held in Mexico City. It’s easy to see when speaking with Steve that Polo is more than a hobby. Polo has become his life passion, making this, his twentieth season, more meaningful than ever.

Polo Enthusiasts agree. But the game that stands alone as the oldest team sport in the history of mankind didn’t start amidst a backdrop of beautiful people in designer hats sipping champagne and stomping divots. The history of the game presents a darker side that Steve enjoys sharing: “No matter where I’m at in the world, I go on the assumption that most of the crowd is experiencing polo for the first time, so I always give a little history. The origins of polo go back to 650 b.c. under the reign of King Darius the 1st of Persia. Back then, the chukker ball was actually the decapitated heads of their opponents! Obviously, the balls didn’t go as far, and it was tough if you had to use a bunch of ball in one game.” Thankfully, a tamer version of polo evolved. The indians were playing it when the English colonized, so the British Cavalry officers brought it back to England in the 1850’s. From there, Polo came to American shores in 1876, our centennial year, and was first played at the Meadowbrook Country Club in New York which is still open today. It’s hard to imagine that only 70 years ago the U.S. had its

“It’s become much more than I ever imagined,” says Steve. “My day job has always been insurance; life and annuities. The other half is microphone work, radio and TV voice overs, master of ceremonies/auctioneering work, public speaking and of course, polo announcing. Also, I just did a show that will be on the history channel and the military channel this fall. It’s called, “Taking the Office”. It was filmed on the USS Midway, and it corresponds with...historical footage, interviews with veterans and the impact that U.S. Presidents have made on foreign policy. I was a former naval officer, so I was chosen as the host. I feel the Polo Club has opened all those doors. There’s so many influential people involved with the San Diego Polo Club, you get to do what you love and have success too.” Although he no longer plays the game, Steve still gets the same ‘rush’ from announcing. “I still can’t wait to get there every Sunday,” he says. “I show up early and stay late because it’s so much fun.” If you would like to see Steve “in action” or experience your first polo match, come down to the San Diego Polo Club on any given Sunday, now through October 3rd. Who knows, you might experience your own epiphany like Steve, and find yourself on the field, mallot in hand, ready to swing.... Dave and Karen Price, Owners and Operators of Bernardo Moving & Storage.

BERNARDO MOVING AND STORAGE When Quality Counts. T he purchase of a new home is one of the most exciting events an individual or family can experience. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in people’s lives that is usually followed by great happiness and positive change. But anyone who’s gone through the physical act of moving one’s prized possessions and personal belongings realizes this is no easy task. The realities of packing, moving, and oftentimes storage can quickly replace the excitement with uncertainty. In today’s busy world, without the proper assistance, planning and execution, moving can also be one of the most stressful events to endure. President, Karen Price, and General Manager, Dave Price, are well aware of this fact. Since 1977, they have made it their business philosophy to take their family owned and operated moving company to another level. As Dave says, “We go above and beyond the nuts and bolts of packing, moving and storage. At the end of the day, it’s quality that counts.” It’s this friendly, hands-on approach that the Price family have run their business on for over thirty years, and the reason they continue to receive high marks of satisfaction from their customers. “We’re different in that the longevity of our employees helps us maintain a high level of quality,” says Dave. “It’s not that we’re just a transportation company

that takes your things from one place to another. We really are a service company that tries to minimize the disruption in people’s lives when they have to pick up and move or put things in a different place.” This service orientation, or concierge approach makes Bernardo Moving stand out from their competitors. They provide many supplemental services, such as in-home evaluations, accurate estimates, practical moving tips to reduce stress, and resources like donor or disposal sites. They are also experts at moving fine furniture. “Sometimes, with today’s fine wood floors, we’re moving furniture on furniture,” says Dave, “and we know how to care for fine furniture and antiques.” Being Rancho Bernardo residents themselves for over twenty years, the Prices’ are focused on their community. They can and do readily provide clients with numerous professional resources, such as attorneys, realtors, and preschools, to name a few. Another source of pride is that in 1995, Bernardo Moving became an Agent for Wheaton Van Lines. Wheaton is the only van moving company that has consistently won the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. They are also the official movers for Steinway Pianos. Wheaton’s customer satisfaction

“Your crew is excellent, we are very pleased. They did a great job and went overboard to help us get everything in place. They were VERY careful and cautious with our breakable pieces.” - Jean Liberman rate is consistently at 95% or higher and they have the industry’s most qualified drivers. These are reasons enough for the Prices’ to choose Wheaton in lieu of another reputable company like Mayflower or Atlas. However, as Karen points out, it was Wheaton’s family approach to business that matched so well with theirs. “We took a long time to decide who we’d represent nationally, and we chose Wheaton to handle our long distance clients because they are well represented and had long term history like we do,” she says. “The way they do business is very similar to ours; not a lot of turnover, long term employees. We interviewed their drivers and asked, ‘why do you drive for Wheaton?’ They said, ““We started with them, went away and came back because they treat us fairly, give good compensation and employee benefits, like monthly awards.”” “Good relationships are essential any time you team up. We’re not really done with the day until we know all our crews are back. It’s that team unity we all share.” Customers seem to agree. With such a long-standing relationship and reputation in the community, Bernardo Moving and Storage is poised to continue taking the stress out of moving and making this all-important transition a little easier for San Diegans. And because their approach is more than just ‘business as usual’, Karen, Dave and the entire crew maintain a family attitude that keeps them just as satisfied as their clients. “We enjoy what we do,” says Karen. “Every day is different. And the more we have a variety of challenges, the more we can do for our clients on both a local and national level.” For more information on Bernardo Moving and Storage, please call 858-487-MOVE (6683) or visit their website at www.bernardomoving.com.

An electric of old, owned by Mrs. William C. Stovers.

ELECTRIC article by: Willie Daniels

car enthusiasts hear the phrase, “electric powered vehicle”, it’s not “performance” they connect it with. Rather, what comes to mind may be a golf cart, radio controlled car or other “gag” vehicle. Yet as the knowledge and dynamics of vehicle drivetrains, software and braking have increased, as well as advancements in battery technology, the concept of a performance minded “electric powered vehicle” has become more than a sci-fi dream; it’s become a reality.

ELECTRIC POWERED HISTORY What many don’t realize is that the “electric powered vehicle” has a long history in the automotive industry. The idea goes back to 1832, when a Scottish inventor named Robert Anderson created the first crude electric carriage powered by non-rechargeable primary cells. Later that century, Pope Manufacturing became the first large-scale American electric automobile manufacturer, releasing “electric powered” taxis in New York. Then in the early 1900’s, the “electric powered” vehicle hit its peak in the U.S., representing about one-third of all cars on the roads of New York City, Boston,

and Chicago. So, what happened that lead to the demise of “electric powered” vehicles? And now that they’re back as a green alternative to fuel guzzlers, how will the automotive industry answer the call for not only a practical based “electric powered” vehicle, but a performance minded one as well?

POPULAR TO NOT SO POPULAR Electric powered vehicles were fast becoming popular until the release of the Ford Model T. After this came the invention of the first electric start for gasoline powered cars. Now consumers didn’t have to hand crank their vehicle to get it to start, they could simply turn a key or push a button. This, along with gasoline being more readily available, the ability to travel greater distances, and greater horsepower all brought manufacturing of the “electric powered” vehicle to a near stand

THE BREAK THROUGH The year was 2006. The scene was set at an International Car Show in San Francisco for an elite vehicle manufacturer by the name of Tesla Motors to ruffle feathers around the world. They unveiled their first production ALL “electric powered” PERFORMANCE roadster. Yes, not only did they release a vehicle that could be used in transportation from point A to point B, but they surpassed that idea and built a high performance exotic street driven race car. The numbers on paper were astonishing! The first production car was sold in 2008, and those numbers have gotten better since then.

FROM UNDER TO OVER ACHIEVER The exclusivity, limited production, over the top performance and sexy body lines of the Tesla Roadster had transformed the once downtrodden ALL electric vehicle into a must have for

still in the 1920s.

CARS THE PAST HAS BECOME THE FUTURE. DOWN BUT NOT OUT FOR THE COUNT Gas-powered vehicles ruled the roads almost exclusively for the next 70+ years. Minorities realized the negative impact gasoline based engine emissions and smog had on the environment and the human body. U.S. reliance on imported oil was another concern that plagued the American public. Soon their concerns became a reality with the soaring price of oil in 1970’s. Finally, turn of the century environmental trends and programs helped bring an emergence and renewed interested in electric powered vehicles. Various companies began to take an active interest in building “electric powered” vehicles. Programs and regulations were created to help educate the public and encourage manufacturers to utilize the power of electricity in transportation. But public acceptance didn’t come until Toyota released its hybrid, Prius in 1997. Great strides have been made with hybrids (hybrid: utilizing both electric and gasoline to power a vehicle), but going to an ALL “electric powered” vehicle was still a sci-fi fantasy. Certain improvements would have to be addressed first, including the distance it could travel, how to recharge it and how fast it can go from 0 to 60. Finally, for the performance-minded enthusiast, the time to provide a commanding answer had come!

society’s elite and car collectors around the world. Why? To start, imagine a small electric motor wired to a battery and a little switch to turn it on and off. Once you flipped the switch, how long would it take before that little motor was spinning at full speed? Faster than you can blink. Now imagine pushing the pedal to the floor in a Tesla Roadster where 375 volts push up to 900 Amps of current into a motor that sits directly behind your back. Simply put, the power is instant. This car rockets you from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds! If it were not for the head rests, ( continued on page 64 )

you would need to see a chiropractor every time you dropped the hammer on the accelerator. And yes, it accomplishes all this with Zero, count ‘em ZERO emissions and a monthly gas bill of......ZERO! With a range of 245 miles, the Tesla Roadster far exceeds that of the average daily commute. And once it’s time to recharge with the Tesla Home Connector, a Roadster charges in as little as 4 hours from empty! Most owners just “top off” the charge after they get home so it’s ready in the morning. It’s like having a free full tank everyday you go to work or to the store. Sporty elegance is a wonderful addition to the performance of the Tesla roadster. The hand-built, carbon fiber Roadster sets the mark for premium electronic cars to come. The monocoque chassis, constructed of resin-bonded and riveted extruded aluminum adds rigidity and strength to the lightweight package; options only available on cars priced much higher than the Roadster. Optional Carbon fiber accents compliment the interior as well. The monitoring of the car’s battery power and range are located on a easy to see touch screen in the center console next to the “buttons” to drive the car. Yes, buttons. Because the Tesla is powered by an electric motor, there are no gears to shift into or clutches to push. You simply push the “D” button and GO. The technology and innovative thinking that encompass the build of this car make you forget you’re driving an electric car, but every time you pull up to a light, or stop at the store you will be reminded. People just flock to it. They want to know everything from how it drives to where you purchased it. So you do have to add a few minutes to your schedule if you’re going to be on top to your appointments, which is not necessarily a bad thing if you enjoy the attention.

MOVING FORWARD With Tesla blowing the doors open for “electric powered” vehicles, a seed has been planted and the market has began to grow. Soon available on the market are several new “electric powered” models from manufactures like Nissan, Chevrolet and Mitsubishi. But none of which is set to compare with the Tesla Roadster. Though “electric powered” vehicles have long sat in the shadow of that of gasoline, the future looks bright. It will be interesting to see how they progress and advance over the next few years.

If you’re like most San Diegans, a day at the Del Mar Track or an afternoon watching Polo at the San Diego Polo Club doesn’t stop with the last race or chukker. Watching the horses compete on either field can stir up a mighty appetite, especially if you find yourself in the Winner’s Circle. Born out of both tradition and trend, several local hot spots quickly come to mind. Whether you’re in search of a quick bite or an elaborate spread, these local choices are sure to deliver a winning combination. Years ago, post-track dining was all in Del Mar, however, some new restaurants have opened that are providing exciting alternatives. Delicias served its first dinners about 19 years ago, and it soon became a popular place to mingle. A recent change in ownership and management have brought back the luster of its origins. Gene Campbell provides direction and Executive Chef, Michael Knowles, creates artistry on the plate. It’s an interesting coincidence that Wolfgang Puck himself helped design the original menu and concept for the restaurant (Chef Knowles worked with him at Postrio in S.F. and then Spago and Postrio in Las Vegas.) An amuse bouche of melon gazpacho started out the evening the night we dined at Delicias. Cool, refreshing and flavorful

the crisp skin salmon with trumpet mushrooms, asparagus, cipolini onions, bacon and beurre rouge. For dessert, classic chocolate baby cake (with vanilla gelato) remains on the menu, however, the summer berry cobbler with gelato is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. Happily, the yummy dining experience at Delicias is back, as is the wine list, which is one of the most extensive in the County. For the adventurous and those wanting to educate their palate, try the 3 tasting flight for $25 or the 5 tasting flight for $35. The restaurant is firing on all cylinders and will get another visit very soon. Another nearby choice is Dolce Pane e Vino. This destination offers a medley of opportunities being a restaurant, wine bar, wine retailer and formaggeria (cheese shop) all in one. While the titles of management may seem to be full of humor (with Executive Chef and Hair Model, Chris O’Donnell, and Czar of Mirth and Merriment, Owner, Dr. Anthony F. Smith), there is serious food coming out of the kitchen and a selection of terrific wines that will satisfy the consumer or serious oenophile. very evident. Chris’ Chino Farms cucumber salad with fresh cucumbers, celery, wild arugula, frisee, tomato, avocado and white balsamic vinaigrette comes from fond memories of what his mother prepared in the summer. Refreshing and perfectly dressed, it’s a great summer starter. With summer fruits available, don’t miss his heirloom tomato and stone fruit salad, burrata cheese (the “it” cheese of the moment), aged balsamic and micro basil with wild strawberries, plums, and apricots. Truly great taste! The menu format is of smaller plating (ala tapas), making these dishes deserving of enjoyment and pairing with terrific wine. The Maine lobster skewers with chili and garlic butter were perfectly prepared and delicious, with a small salad of arugula and frizee. Their selection of flat breads bring breakfast to the dinner table: prosciutto and egg Florentine with crushed San Marzano tomatoes, wild arugula, house made mozzarella and shaved parmigiana with one egg sunny side up on the

hotel guests delectable dining with a view of the golf course. On the evening that we sampled Executive Chef John Miller’s culinary creations, they had their Thursday evening special tasting menu; 10 smaller plates for $10 each, and for only $5 more you can increase the serving to a full dinner plate, which includes a Ceaser or house green salad served family style. The plating and presentation was nice, the beef medallions over mashed potatoes with green beens and mushrooms flavorful, and the chicken melanese was very good and served with spinach instead of arugula. The grill is open Wednesday through Sunday. So, whether you’re looking for old-school track tradition or the newest latest dining hot spot, Del Mar and its surrounding areas have it all. Other quality choices for either a drink, bar menu or dinner include Tommy V’s Italian Chop House with terrace dining that overlooks the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Fields, and Kitchen 1540 (in the heart of Del Mar with the

Sonoma duck two ways with roasted duck breast and a crisp potato duck confit cake underneath was equally tasty; the imaginative placement use of a strawberry-rhubarb compote with aged balsamic topping made the dish exceptional. Chino Farms strawberry and rhubarb shortcake with vanilla gelati and aged balsamic completed our dinner and satisfied every sweet craving. Dolce sells wines retail at a price 20% lower than listed on the wine list and also offers a broad range of cheeses at its formaggeria. It, along with Venissimo, offer some outstanding cheeses to buy and take home. The use of sustainable foods and fresh vegetables and fruit from Chino Farms and other local farms is the hallmark of quality food and dining at both Delicias and Dolce. That is repeated at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, where Executive Chef Jesse Frost creates outstanding food daily (except Monday). fashion TOUCH OF FUR

This season a touch of fur, whether it be faux or real, adds a dose of sophistication and luxe to any ensemble. Adding fur accents to your fall wardrobe through statement pieces like vests, boots or handbags produces a dramatic effect. Remember, this trend is all about small doses of luxe texture to create that “touch of fur” sensation. This trend is faux real and can be worn by anyone who wants to look chic this season.

HOODED VEST

Manolo Blahnik suede ankle boot with wrap around fur and almond toe reminds us to expect the unexpected. The touch of fur on high heeled booties makes it the ultimate luxe footwear.

This versatile clutch is equally perfect to wear casual or dressy. Of course it would look fabulous with a nice dress, but add it to a pair of jeans and a blazer for the perfect combination of sophisticate meets preppy.

Add this hooded fur vest to a solid black outfit for a luxurious statement. Pair it with this season’s gotta-have boots for a match made in fashion heaven. Can be worn with an all black outfit or just jeans.

This handbag is a great combination of luxury and trendy with a sporty feel. It’s a fun way to wear fur, regardless of the climate.
