JESSIE GEORGINA THE “IT” WOMEN OF FUNCTIONAL-LUXURY

( About Us ) Meet co-founders Vickie Nezat and Shelli Pelly, two local sisters on the rise! Having launched their lifestyle brand Jessie Georgina, a modern line of functional–luxury designer bags and accessories catering to style–conscious, savvy women in November of 2014, they are determined to redefine the way in which women shop for travel, business and everyday bags and accessories. “There isn’t any company in the marketplace today catering specifically to the female consumer from our viewpoint,” says Shelli Pelly, adding, “Lululemon captured the women’s activewear market, in part, by focusing on high–quality designs that made functional sense to women and appealed to her sense of style. Jessie Georgina is poised to do the same for women’s bags and related accessories, across three vertical markets: business, travel and everyday. By catering entirely to our female customer, we seek to offer her pieces with a perfect blend of sensible functionality with high–quality and high–end style.” Jessie Georgina, named after the sisters’ grandmother, is an accessible–luxury brand, with pieces ranging from $95 for the 3-1-1 Toiletry Bag, up to $425 for the gorgeous Travel–Brief Tote. Jessie Georgina pieces are made using high–quality materials such as luxe Italian leathers and custom–branded hardware and lining. “All brands offer something different to their customers. We spend a significant amount of time ensuring each piece offers specific functionality and versatility to create real value for our customers,” says co-founder Vickie Nezat. The Solana Beach collection has a definitive travel point–of– view. Best–selling pieces such as the Travel–Brief Tote and the hands–free 4–in–1 Belt Bag have quickly become cult favorites. “It’s so exciting to see women wearing our designs and wanting to know what’s in our next collection,” says Vickie Nezat. The sisters tell us the next collection is somewhat secret but will involve a few really cool pieces for business (women are 50% of the workforce, after all), as well some other fun surprises. Prior to founding Jessie Georgina, Shelli was a highly accomplished Director of Sales in the corporate sphere, where

she was known for creating and driving award–winning sales divisions in the fields of telecomm and Saas–based IT. Vickie spent the last 11 years at the Transportation Security Administration headquarters where she led an organization focused on the changing requirements for securing air travel and the residual passenger impacts. “We feel so fortunate to have the ability to pursue our vision. We’ve had such enormous support from our parents and circle of friends. There were times when the mountain seemed so high. We’d no sooner climb that mountain and the next one would appear,” says Shelli. Vickie quickly adds, “That’s when we’d say, ‘Up and over. Let’s go.’ We know building a business is a marathon and not a sprint.” Come see Jessie Georgina at FINE Magazine’s Spring Xposure on March 26th. Their online store offers the ultimate in convenient shopping or you can visit Madison Leather and Luggage in Flower Hill, Del Mar to see the Solana Beach collection in person.

ntigua. Just saying the name of the Caribbean island immediately conjures images of white sandy beaches and sapphire waters. Like holding a seashell against your ear, it echoes with the sound of rolling waves and seabirds coasting across a cloudless sky. The island that originally began as Great Britain’s most important Caribbean naval port more than 200 years ago is now one of the world’s most sought–after tropical get–aways. With average temperatures ranging from the mid–70s in the winter to mid–80s during the summer and an annual rainfall averaging 45 inches a year, it requires no leap of imagination to understand the destination’s increasing popularity. The island is host to several resort destinations catering to every type of guest visiting the island, from the avid surfer to the traveler whose main goal is to do nothing but decompress and escape from the world. Antigua’s Galley Bay Resort & Spa is one of these fabled resorts. A 20–minute taxi ride is all it takes to reach this all–inclusive tropical getaway that describes itself as “an intimate hideaway for discerning travelers who want a refined yet unpretentious experience.” Stretched out across 40 waterfront acres of its own private beach, Galley Bay gives every guest fast and easy access to both the water and resort amenities. It is currently listed in the top five Antigua resorts on TripAdvisor and is the recipient of several awards, including TripAdvisor’s 2014 30

Traveler’s Choice Award, 2014 Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Award and Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Hotels 2014 Award. More recently, it placed eighth in a November 2014 article published by CNN of the “Top 25 all–inclusive resorts around the world.” Guests planning a visit to the resort may choose between a variety of options, ranging from premium beachfront suites, boasting floor– to–ceiling sliding glass doors that open onto your own private veranda with stunning views of the ocean, to beachfront rooms with direct access to the beach, to the luxurious Gauguin cottages. These private cottages—a newlywed favorite—“reflect the artist’s [Paul Gauguin’s] lifestyle in Tahiti, with privacy that represents a departure from many of the constraints of civilization.” Among the various “hidden jewels” this resort offers its visitors, General Manager Chris Ghita notes the most popular: “Our weekly cooking demonstrations, where one of our chefs performs live using something local and indigenous to Antigua,” he says. “Guests participate and receive a participation certificate and the original recipe.” The resort boasts several different dining options, each with its own unique menu featuring fare that will appeal to any traveler’s tastes, from the global to the indigenous. If you’re just looking for a quick place to escape the sun for a few minutes and enjoy a quick cocktail, bars and lounges are scattered throughout CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

the resort for that exact purpose. As far as dining options are concerned, Ghita says, “Our private beach dining is a must–do. Set on powdered white sand with Tiki torches glowing on the shoreline, here you have your own butler with white gloves. Guests are allowed to choose their menu, which we then pair with a varietal wine.” Ghita has been the general manager of the resort for a little more than a year and says that his team’s “sheer passion is meeting and exceeding our guests expectations,” which is a key factor in making the resort the special, luxurious experience it is. It’s the little things that resonate with guests and, as such, Ghita points out, “Employees usually go out of their way to present repeat guests with their favorite drink upon arrival from the airport [and place] hand–written notes and a fresh vase of flowers in every room that has an anniversary or a special occasion.” Galley Bay Resort & Spa, Ghita says, is a true couple’s resort; the resort enforces a 16–and–over age restriction, thus ensuring the peace and tranquility its guests anticipate upon arrival. The majority of its guests are comprised of wedding parties, honeymooners, retirees and “the business travelers who are looking for a total detox vacation.” And when it comes to detoxing, Galley Bay encourages its guests to relax and… Indulge. Launched in 2008, Indulge Spa is Galley Bay’s embodiment of 32

“relaxation and pampering.” This multi–level sanctuary showcases several massage areas: two rustic, open–air treatment “pods” overlooking the resort’s bird sanctuary and lagoon, a couples’ massage room and an air–conditioned private massage room. It additionally offers facials, spa therapies and salon services. In–room services may be scheduled as well. For those desiring a little more action during their vacation, the staff at Galley Bay is happy to arrange day trips to explore the island beyond the resort. The Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour takes place in the heart of the rainforest, where a suspension bridge over the water leads to the start of 9 zip–lines suspended over the glorious gorge in Fig Tree Drive. A trip to Stingray City offers a safe and educational excursion while learning about and handling Southern Stingrays in their natural habitat, while a Caribbean helicopter tour will give you a bird’s–eye– view of the active Soufriere Hill Volcano. The island provides countless opportunities for exploration and adventure. The location, amenities and professional yet personal service experienced at Galley Bay Resort & Spa offer the “perfect vacation” and a “fantastic island getaway,” which is exactly what former guests are saying on TripAdvisor after they’ve returned from their utopian holiday. More information on the resort, including rates and availability, can be found at galleybayresort.com.

United in San Diego

KEVIN CRAWFORD’S LEADERSHIP OF UNITED WAY IS CHANGING SAN DIEGO BY ROXANA BARHAGHI

T

o be “united” means to join together for a common purpose, an idea certainly not absent from San Diego and uniquely embodied in our United Way. United Way is a nationwide non–profit organization consisting of members who work together to better their local community. United Way of San Diego’s personal mission is to “spark breakthrough community action that elevates every child and family towards a brighter future.” Their mission is achieved by coming together to help solve some of the greatest challenges in today’s society, which in turn makes the future of San Diego a little brighter for us all. Kevin Crawford, President and CEO of United Way San Diego, began leading the organization in early 2014. Crawford is passionate about preparing the next generation by making sure they have the proper foundation for success. One of his most intense points of focus is preparing students to become the future leaders of our society. Crawford believes that children need the bare essentials, such as food and clothing, to succeed in school. “We make sure that we are standing in the gap for that child in those areas that are the biggest distractions for them in school,” says Crawford. United Way comes together to determine the factors that can negatively influence a child’s ability to be successful before they enter the classroom. “United Way looks at all of those things with the experts and that’s where the catalyst roll we play is important.” Under Crawford’s guidance, United Way of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District partnered up to establish the “Early Warning Continuum” project. The project creates monthly reports which track students whose attendance, behavior and academic performance are dropping below satisfactory. The schools collaborate with social work interns who prioritize the at–risk students. They then work closely with the student and their families to determine the problems that are interfering with the child’s success. “If we can get to kids early and give them the tools to be successful, the chance of them being successful in life

goes way up,” says Crawford. The project helps connect families to needed resources that enrich their lives. Crawford has played an active and positive role in society his entire life. Before joining United Way of San Diego, Crawford was the Interim City Manager for the City of Carlsbad, as well as the Fire Chief of Carlsbad for 12 years. He has battled some of America’s most catastrophic events, including some of the largest Southern California wildfires and Hurricane Katrina, and even provided aid during the wake of 9/11. His passion for helping others has positively impacted many, including those who benefit from United Way of San Diego. “I love being in positions to help people see their potential,” says Crawford. Together with United Way, Crawford continues to focus on the future and plans to maintain the vision of the organization by creating “a vibrant community built on opportunity for everyone.”

“United Way of San Diego’s personal mission is to ‘spark breakthrough community action that elevates every child and family towards a brighter future.’”

WATCH OUT THESE EXCLUSIVE WATCHES HAVE A PERSONALITY THAT IS TIMELESS BY KEITH TURNER

W

hen tennis superstar Rafael Nadal walks onto the court for a big match, he carries with him just a few important pieces of equipment to help ensure success: his racquet, a sturdy and flexible pair of tennis shoes and his watch. Not just any watch, but a fabulously intricate and stylistic timepiece that Nadal himself co–designed with renowned Swiss designer Richard Mille. “Anything on my hand bothers me,” says Nadal, the first player to ever win three consecutive Grand Slam titles on three different court surfaces. “I thought it would be really difficult to accept the challenge and play with a watch on. But when I understood what the watch was all about, I didn’t hesitate.” What the watch is about is much more than just telling time. It’s a fashion piece that stands out from the crowd as an extremely rare and highly complex design that makes a subtle statement of Nadal’s personality, perseverance and confidence in being the best player, both on the court and off. “There was a connection right away,” Nadal says of the first time that he met Richard Mille on the Spanish Island of Majorca. “He is a very positive person and we started working together; the timepiece they provided me is a marvel, it weighs practically nothing and makes me feel extremely comfortable. But at the same time, if I play without it I feel something is definitely missing.” Nadal The original timepiece on Nadal’s wrist was the RM027 Tourbillon, a traditional mechanical watch taken to the extreme with NASA–like technology. It’s a 20– gram timepiece created with carbon nanotube with manual winding movement and a cable suspension mechanism for the baseplate that is designed to endure the brutal physicality of Nadal’s violent game. 36

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

It is one of only 50 such pieces produced and each is inscribed on the back with Nadal’s name and the model and piece number, in the same fashion as a work of fine art. And the price tag—should you be so inclined to ask—is just a few ticks under $700,000. “Some people buy houses or apartments as an investment and not just for personal use,” Nadal says. “It’s the same with this watch. It’s a special watch with avant–garde technology.” In fact, several of the 200–plus Richard Mille models on the market today are priced north of $1 million, including the recently released RM 19–02 Tourbillon Fleur, with a white gold case set with diamonds, priced at $1.09 million and the RM 51–02 Tourbillon Diamond Twister retailing for $935,000. All Richard Mille models are limited editions, from 30 to 100 produced, and most, but not all, retain the hallmark rectangular design that is transparent, showing the tourbillon technology all the way through the watch. “Richard’s watches are not just time pieces, they are wearable collector’s items,” explains Laura Hughes, director of communications, who is based in the company’s Beverly Hills boutique on South Rodeo Drive, just one of two Richard Mille stores in the U.S. “You can buy an exotic car or custom home, but you can’t take that with you to a business meeting, restaurant or cocktail party. When you wear a Richard Mille watch, people will see it from across the room; it’s very recognizable.” But not all of the company’s models carry such a lofty price tag. In fact, the designer recently released a new, 50–piece limited edition model called the RM 011 “Yellow Storm,” which retails for only $170,000, and a brand new limited edition “all black” RM 61–01 model, carrying the endorsement of Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, available for just $130,000. Speaking of endorsements, there’s a long list of high–profile celebrities and sports stars who have collaborated on the design of a Richard Mille model. They include golfer Bubba Watson; Brazilian Formula One racer Felipe Massa; actor Jackie Chan; Academy Award–winning actress Natalie Portman; Grammy Award winner Pharrell Williams; and international polo star Pablo Mac Donough, to name just a few. Bred By The Sea ROBERT TALBOTT CELEBRATES THE RETURN OF LUXURY

I

BY M AT T Z A M U D I O

nstilled in Monterey, California is the hard–working and triumphant spirit of the coastal workers that once inhabited its shores. It is a place of opportunity, of grit, and where the fruits of the ocean were reaped by brave fisherman and hardy cannery workers not so long ago. It was in this environment where Robert and Audrey Talbott would build their luxury clothing company, amidst go–getters, entrepreneurs and laborers alike. Sixty–five years after the Talbott family first landed on the west coast, Robert Talbott luxury clothing company has grown into a major luxury clothing line with its own unique and elegant style. I conversed with Bob Corliss, CEO of Robert Talbott, in hopes to understand more about the state of his company, its design influences, and its undeniable coastal identity. Under the guidance of Corliss, Robert Talbott has evolved into much more than Robert and Audrey Talbott could have ever imagined upon creating the brand.

38

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

“THE COLORS, DESIGN AND ACTIVE YET CASUALLY ELEGANT STYLE THAT OUR COMPANY STRIVES TO ACHIEVE EMBODIES THE RICH CULTURE OF LIFE BY THE OCEAN.” From a small shop on the coast of central California, Robert Talbott luxury clothing company is now a country–wide corporation. With stores in California, Texas and New York, the popularity of Robert Talbott’s elegant clothing speaks for the true quality and prominence of this once small business. It only takes a quick internet search of Robert Talbott to find yourself enamored by brightly colored fabrics, carefully woven sweaters and classy neckties of all hues. It is this vibrant luxury that has become somewhat of a trademark for Robert Talbott, designing clothing that pops rather than monotonously blending into the background. Bob Corliss attributes the creative intuition of the very unique Robert Talbott clothing line to a “design team that is intimately involved in the design process from start to finish.” The head of the design team, Mark Calder, is the creative director at Robert Talbott and leads their creative ventures. Calder’s eye for style and passion for design allows the company to excel in the design realm and create products at a standard to which most people today are not accustomed. In any medium of art, whether it be painting, photography, clothing design or cinema, there must be some driving influence to guide an artist towards a compelling final work. For the designers at Robert Talbott, that influence is the ocean and the coastal life that has been woven into the fabric

of all of the company’s garments. Bob Corliss explains, “the colors, design and active yet casually elegant style that our company strives to achieve embodies the rich culture of life by the ocean.” Where once Robert Talbott was a brand particular to the Monterey Bay region, it is today a larger–than–life testament to the small foundations it was built on. Bob Corliss explains that when he first got involved with the company it was small yet strong and that his “goal was to leave the company in a better condition than he had found it.” Corliss knew that the company had incalculable potential and set out to bring Robert Talbott to full fruition through new tactics of advertising and design. By investing in marketing and a talented design team, Corliss has watched as Robert Talbott grew substantially over the years from a small business to a major fashion player. Bob Corliss was able to see the valuable elasticity of Robert Talbott—which seems to be as permanent as the ocean it was built beside—and confidently calls the brand the “only truly great American company.” Robert Talbott was built on the ideas of a deep–rooted sense of tradition and value, an appreciation for the craft and, perhaps most importantly, an innate understanding of and dedication to quality. It is these things, along with the grit and passion that is so obviously incorporated into Corliss’s company, that allow it to be one of the greats of our time.

BY JAMES MORAN

L

aunching in March, the first installment of the ‘Nordstrom Signature & Caroline Issa’ partnership will debut solely online and to fifty–five fortunate Nordstrom stores, including San Diego’s own Fashion Valley and University Towne Center locations. With four anticipated collections a year, the Spring 2015 collection will be the first of an ongoing collaboration, featuring 25 ready–to–wear pieces. Caroline Issa—a noted votary of chic street style—partnered with Nordstrom’s design director in order to craft the aesthetic of the collection and its design sensibility. Conversations regarding the collaboration began in early 2014 with Ms. Issa as the project’s decided muse, so the collection is bound to be entrenched in roots of versatile luxury featuring Issa’s signature ensembles: tailored jackets and trousers, elegant knits and cashmeres, and polished day–to–night foundation pieces. But just who is Caroline Issa? The lady in question is anything but static: Canadian–born and American–educated, Issa is CEO of the Tank Group (consisting of Tank Magazine and becauselondon.com), a verified street–style star and, most recently, the face of her own

The contemporary Renaissance woman graduated from the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and spent the beginning of her career as a management consultant for Nordstrom, Dr. Pepper/7-UP and Boots. Eventually, after a short stint in modeling, she moved to London to join Tank in its early years, developing the company’s publishing and consultancy wing. Nearly 12 years later, Issa resides as Fashion Director for both Tank and Because London magazines and serves as a creative consultant for several renowned luxury fashion brands. Furthermore, she served on the juries of both the Hyères and Les Rencontres d’Arles photography festivals and is on the British Fashion Counsel’s Fashion Forward award panel, supporting the emergence of new talent. In essence, Ms. Caroline Issa is not only well–versed in the fashion world but, more importantly, well–involved. With a long–standing relationship dating back more than fifteen years, the storied American luxury retailer Nordstrom and style maven Caroline Issa have certainly crafted a perennially chic line. Ms. Issa ensured that each ensemble reflected her own personal tastes and

Men’s Spring Eyewear

LIFE’S BETTER THROUGH ROSE–COLORED GLASSES AFTER ALL BY JAMES MORAN

A

s we drift further away from the winter solstice and closer to summer, the sun rises higher in the sky; the days slowly elongate; and, of course, there’s more sun. Each day, an increasingly large amount of UVA and UVB rays illuminate the grounds of our existence, draping the world in varying degrees of sunshine, and leaving us with the gift of sight. But, like many things in life, all that glitters is not gold: the sun’s rays can potentially harm the human eye when left unprotected; therefore, there’s an earnest need for sunglasses. Thankfully, eyewear designers have created a multitude of designs for the Spring and Summer 2015 season, guaranteeing not only one’s eye safety, but also one’s sense of style.

Featuring frames constructed of high–precision machined alloy with a brushed finish, Zoinx Wrap sunglasses deliver the finest TAX polarized lenses, effectively reducing glare and reflection ($119 at ZoinxGlasses.com).

Tom Ford’s River Polarized Vintage Square sunglasses deliver vintage club-master style with the brand’s renowned metal ‘T’ emblem ($455 at TomFord.com).

Boy’s Club A NEW GENERATION OF MEN’S BEAUTY PRODUCTS PROVES BEAUTY ISN’T JUST FOR THE GIRLS BY MELISSA PORTER

F

rom hair serums to eye creams, there is an endless bounty of beauty products on the market for anything you could ever need. Typically, women flock to the beauty aisle, but more and more beauty products are being geared toward men. These products, specially designed for men, will make dapper seem easy. SKINCARE Following a healthy skincare routine can be one of the most important, often overlooked, steps for men’s beauty regimes. Using a daily moisturizer is an easy step to taking care of your skin and has plenty of benefits: it can prevent the look of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture and add SPF to protect your skin from the sun. It’s important to be aware of your skin type and pick a moisturizer that will work well with your skin. Moisturizers like Clinique Oil Control Mattifying Moisturizer ($26, clinique.com) work perfectly for oily skin by adding oil–free hydration. This lightweight moisturizer is meant for morning and night use and keeps a shine–free look to the skin. Eye cream is another underrated product for men. The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate, making that area more prone to fine lines, puffiness, sagging and discoloration. Eye creams should be used before bed so skin can fully absorb the product. Evolution Man Revitalization Eye Gel ($30, gilt.com) is a great product for men with problem areas around their eyes. This eye gel has anti–inflammatory ingredients to treat puffiness as well as antioxidants, like Antarctic seaweed extract and grape seed extract to revitalize that sensitive skin. SHAVING Whether you’re a fan of the clean–

44

shaven look or a nicely groomed beard, shaving is a significant part of a man’s beauty routine. The best way to combat common issues like nicks and cuts, sloppy facial hair styles and razor burn is by investing in great shaving products. The most important investment? A quality razor. The right shaving cream and aftershave can also greatly improve the shaving process and effects. Kiehl’s Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream ($9, kiehls.com) is far from the most expensive product on the market, but it gets the job done, helping you get a close shave while refreshing the skin. This particular shaving cream has ingredients like methanol and sesame seed oil to provide a cooling and moisturizing effect. Shaving kits offer an all–in–one alternative. The Art of Shaving has great shaving kits that eliminate the trouble of picking up all your shaving products individually. The 4 Elements of The Perfect Shave Starter Kit ($25, theartofshaving.com) includes pre– shave oil, shaving cream, aftershave balm and a badger shaving brush. LIPS AND HAIR Weather can often be a guilty culprit when it comes to dry lips. Take extra special care of your lips by using a quality lip balm. Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm ($7.50, getjackblack. com) with avocado oil, beeswax and cocoa butter is perfect for soothing dry and cracked lips, plus contains SPF to protect that delicate skin. Dry winter weather and harsh hair products can drain the moisture from your hair. Opt for products like Jack Black Sleek Finish Texture Cream ($17, getjackblack.com) instead of your run–of–the–mill hair gel. The creamy consistency of the product provides a conditioning element while still giving you control over your hair.

f the oil light signal lights up on the dash of your car, would you ever ignore it? Or worse, cover it up with a black marker and keep driving? As ridiculous and ill–advised as that sounds, many of us men tend to deal with our health problems in similar ways. All too often we ignore the “oil light” of chronic aches and pains, learning to live with it or simply covering them up with drugs. Recurrent aches and pains are often the body’s warning light of an underlying chronic degenerative condition that needs to be addressed. As a result, too many men suffer needlessly from preventable health problems that adversely affect the quality and quantity of their health as they age, sapping their precious vitality prematurely. Research shows that women tend to live longer, healthier lives because they are more likely to be proactive with their health and heed the warnings signs before they become major problems. The good news is that your body is designed to heal itself when given the right opportunity. That right opportunity includes making the healthiest choices in regards to diet and exercise and having a healthy spine and nervous system. Past auto accidents, sports injuries and daily stresses from sitting and working in front of computers have taken a toll on our posture and spine. Unresolved spinal injuries, bulging or herniated disc disorders, abnormal spinal curves and spinal subluxations interfere with nerve signals that control and regulate your body’s organ and tissues, including the healing process. Actively correcting these chronic spinal problems with chiropractic care, posture training and core strengthening exercises resolves many chronic conditions by restoring proper nerve supply, reducing inflammation and maximizing your body’s healing process. Now that you’ve addressed your chronic ailments and laid the foundation for restored health with a balanced spine and nervous

system, you’re ready to regain and maintain healthy testosterone naturally for renewed vitality. Start with the foods you are eating. Processed and preservative filled foods, as well as antibiotic and hormone laden dairy and meats, are loaded with toxic chemicals that are known as hormone disruptors or estrogen mimickers that interfere and suppress your precious testosterone supply. In addition, all those extra calories from poor food choices have led to an obesity epidemic. Recent statistics show that 67% of men ages 35–44 and 72% of men ages 45–64 years are considered obese. The extra fat we carry produces a chemical called aromatase which converts our precious testosterone into estrogen, causing low energy, low sex drive and the feminization of the American male. Cleaning up your diet by consuming organic fresh fruits and vegetables and antibiotic and hormone–free proteins dramatically reduces your toxic exposure and aromatase conversion. Recent studies show that those with greater strength compared to those with the weakest had a 32% reduced death rate from all causes and a 50% reduction in heart deaths and 32% reduction in deaths from cancer. Motivated yet? Renewed strength restores energy, adds confidence and solidifies belief that your future is bright. The best exercises that promote and increase testosterone naturally are squats, dead lifts, pull–ups/chin–ups, push–ups, and bench presses. Add high intensity interval training to your new routine with eight 30 second bursts of activity and you can naturally increase human growth hormone (HGH) in your body by as much as 500%. Remember change is easy—thinking about change is hard. Change happens with one choice at a time, promoting progress and not perfection.

Don’t let your lifespan out live your health span! Choose performance and longevity over chronic pain and disability. If your body is designed to heal, how come you’re not completely healing? Those chronic aches and pains that have persisted and reoccurred for many years is evidence enough that your body is blocked from complete healing, paving the way for future chronic pain and disability instead of performance and longevity. Work Hard, Play Hard THE PROS AND CONS OF THE MODERN WEEKEND WARRIOR BY DR. SCOTT HACKER

S

ince 1950, Americans on average work over 150 extra hours per year and spend less time performing physical activities. Across the US, 80% of the population does not get the exercise the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends each week: 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, like jogging. In busy, modern times, some give up on exercise all together. Many of us, however, wait all week to pack our exercise and sports into the weekend: the birth of the weekend warrior! The term “weekend warrior” refers to people who cram a week’s worth of exercise into weekend activities. Americans spend 70% more time exercising on weekends than they do on weekdays. Let’s face it, when we live in a climate like San Diego, there is really no excuse not to spend your weekend outdoors. In sunny Southern California, there are endless athletic choices including team sports, hikes, swimming, tennis, surfing, skiing and golf. Our well–earned weekend recreation has many benefits, including helping your mood, reducing stress, increasing cardiovascular health and providing a wonderful social outlet. Although regular daily exercise has been proven to be most beneficial to our health, more and more research suggests that the weekend warrior who participates in small amounts of vigorous activity is also reaping some health benefits. A 2004 study showed that men who worked out only on weekends were less likely to die prematurely than those who remained sedentary. It is also important to remember that the weekend warrior lifestyle comes with risks. Packing all that activity into concentrated, intense sessions leads to a higher incidence of muscle strains and ligament tears. Weekend warriors get hurt more often than those who exercise daily. Overuse injuries are more common in people who exercise regularly, while weekend warriors have more acute injuries. The lack of exercise all week leaves muscles stiff and poorly conditioned and joints can be injured when weekend warriors don’t warm up before their sport. Furthermore, many weekend sports involve a social group of friends and that increases the competitive spirit; the more competitive the activity, the more we tend to push our limits and injuries result. In my practice, I commonly see injuries like muscle sprains and strains, fractures and contusions. These types of acute injuries tend to occur more frequently when physical activity is inconsistent throughout the week.

Ready, Set, Play!

Here are my tips to avoid the pitfalls without sacrificing the fun! 1. Stretch. I cannot over–stress the importance of a warm–up routine in preventing muscle injuries. ALWAYS stretch before any strenuous athletic activity. 2. Strengthen. Yes, pumping iron is essential to building up your endurance. Muscles need resistance training to function at their full capacity. If possible, keep a set of light weights in the office for a brief morning workout. 3. Eat healthy all week. Many of us are weekend warriors by necessity. We may not be able to exercise during the week with busy careers and families, but we can make healthy choices with our diet, even when we are pressed for time. 4. Use the right equipment. Make sure your shoes and sports equipment are in top shape to maximize your success. Investing in proper foot support, such as inserts and shoe wear, is important for your long–term orthopedic health. 5. Focus on form and technique. Take your time and learn to perform activities correctly. Consider working with a trainer or coach. Allow your body to become accustomed to the various motions required for your sport. 6. Listen to your body. Pace yourself, take breaks and stay hydrated.

L AW OF F I C E OF L ISA A . B E RG For too long the courts have unfairly underestimated the father’s role as a parent, their capabilities to raise children, and their desire to be with their children. Do the Courts just assume the father’s role, capabilities and desire to be with their children is less valuable than the mother’s? Defending father’s rights and advocacy for men’s rights in family law issues has been a passionate crusade for Lisa Berg since deciding to become a family law attorney nearly 14 years ago. A diverse and wide–ranging professional background, a compassionate awareness of fathers’ situations and a tenacious litigation style make Lisa an experienced and effective advocate for her clients. Following many years in a downtown law firm, Lisa recently opened her own boutique law firm in Solana Beach, bringing with her a reputation for the highest quality representation. Although she focuses on men’s and father’s rights issues in family law, Lisa Berg also represents clients with criminal, elder, estate and civil matters. Lisa’s professional career started as a police officer and ranged from Deputy Public Defender to private practice before seizing the opportunity to realize her passion to level the playing field for fathers in family court matters. With over 17 years of experience, Attorney Berg has varied and complex litigation experience. She has conducted more than 200 criminal defense jury trials and more than 200 family law bench trials. Although a litigator at heart, Lisa has the innate ability to continually strike that rare balance between compassionate awareness of the client’s situation and tenacious representation. Ultimately, she is an advocate. When Lisa is not in business attire she can be found combing the beaches, shaping her tropical garden or doting over her grandchildren.

DO R A Z I O L AW OF F I C E When looking for a lawyer, clients are often forced to choose between wanting a personal experience and access to a widely–knowledgeable professional. At the Dorazio Law Office, there is no need to choose: you get everything. San Diego business law attorney Michael Dorazio, Jr. is more than just an experienced lawyer, he’s an entrepreneur and successful businessman who understands his client’s perspective. Over 40 years of experience in business and commercial law, both in the United States as well as internationally, make Dorazio an undoubtedly commendable choice. His law experience ranges widely and includes business, international business, and commercial real estate, while his diverse clientele includes business owners and executives, commercial developers and builders, investment groups, lawyers, CPA’s, financial planners and other professionals. His skill and insight as a lawyer are wide–ranging and invaluable. What makes Dorazio special, however, is his experience in every sector of the business world, from partner, point man, entrepreneur, and investor to seller and buyer. He may be a lawyer, but he is also a true businessman. Also in his favor is the personal experience he offers everyone; he sees every client personally and works with them one–on–one, rather than passing on a matter to a junior partner or associate like many law firms, meaning every client has direct access to the most knowledgeable member of the team. Dorazio can provide legal services across a wide variety of legal matters, including negotiation of contracts and agreements; structuring transactions and joint ventures; formation of businesses and ownership entities; planning, analysis and due diligence; financing and private securities offerings; regulatory compliance; international business and foreign commerce; as well as problem–solving and dispute resolution. Lawyers, financial planners, CPAs and clients consistently refer new clients to the Dorazio Law Office because Dorazio consistently delivers solutions with a personal touch often lacking from larger law offices. Whether you’re looking for a lawyer to represent you in matters of business, real estate, or international matters, Dorazio is your strongest choice.

L AW OF F I CE S OF J . P. M I L L E R , J R . In 2013, Linda*, a 54 year old woman with 2 children and a marriage of over 25 years, walked into my office about her ongoing divorce. She had 3 attorneys over 3 years in the messy and expensive case. Bullied by her husband and his team of attorneys both in and out of court, her previous attorneys had failed her. The day she hired my office I told her it was a new day in her case. We immediately won a substantial attorney’s fee award so she could stay in the fight. Later we put her husband on the witness stand and exposed him for who he truly was, a liar and a bully. By the end of the case, Linda had 95% custody, tripled her financial support and the community home which she had been excluded from for over 4 years was hers. Three other attorneys tried and failed to do for Linda what we had done. The Law Offices of J.P. Miller, Jr. was founded in 1997 and focuses on the representation of men and women in divorce and custody disputes and individuals in civil litigation cases, ranging from personal injury to real estate and contract litigation. In 2010 and again in 2012, I was nominated for Superior Court Judge. This recognition, in addition to trial experience in both State and U.S. Federal Court, allows a very unique perspective. No two cases are the same. Your case is treated as the most important case we have because that is what each client deserves. As a nationally ranked collegiate athlete at San Diego State before attending law school, my focus is on the outcome of your case and setting the game plan to achieve that outcome. While no attorney can guarantee the result of your case, we know the courtroom is no place for half measures and a timid approach when it is your family, your business and often your livelihood at stake. EXPERIENCE + EXCELLENCE + INTEGRITY = RESULTS When you need a lawyer you can trust with experience and a very personal approach, Bing Bush, Jr. is among the top in his profession. Bush has tried numerous cases in courts mostly in California, Arizona and Kentucky and won nearly every single trial. Bush has obtained exceptional results in numerous cases that many other lawyers would not even take and even has the distinction of obtaining the highest recovery ever in a wrongful death case in the United States, where his clients tragically lost their adult son and two young grandchildren. Bush is a lawyer as a result of his passion to help people. “While most cases are settled, at the end of the day, any conflict that my client has may ultimately go to jury. And if we can’t settle fairly, I’ll get a fair result for my client at trial because every juror wants to do what is fair and just.” Whether the conflict is a business venture gone awry, the tragic death of a loved one, or an injury which completely changes someone’s life in a split second, Bush is reputed for his empathetic and personal manner of telling his client’s story to a jury. He tells the most complex matters with a simple, yet full and vivid picture so they can feel his client’s plight. “Many cases are not about money as money cannot bring back my client’s loss–but money is the only thing

our justice system can provide,” Bush explained. “So I ask jurors for the absolute, full measure of money they can give to compensate my clients as fully as possible–nothing more and nothing less.” Bush’s firm is also respected in the areas of business transactions/litigation, real estate law, wills, trusts and estates. He handles simple wills to extensive trust and estate planning matters with a high measure of thoroughness and excellence. Bush is also highly regarded as an equine lawyer representing most of the jockeys on Southern California race tracks, as well as trainers and owners in a range of issues from business formation (domestic and international), to litigated matters. He also handles racing affairs of H.E. Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, oldest son of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed, ruler of Dubai, and Zabeel Racing International Corp. Additionally, Bush manages his own small racing syndicate, Abbondanza Racing LLC, which is open to smaller horse racing enthusiasts. Prior to starting his own firm, Bush was an associate and then partner with Mullen, Plummer, Badger & Bush from 1987 to 1998 in San Diego. While there, he handled hundreds of small, medium and large cases representing mostly corporations, employers and insurance companies. With a unique depth and breadth of experience, Bush has acted as an exceptional mediator and has recently affiliated with Attorney Mediation Group, LLC. He has an over 95% success rate at helping parties settle difficult personal injury cases, business disputes, divorce and child custody matters. His goal is to help avoid litigation by helping each side understand the perspective of the other side, evaluate their cases, likely outcome scenarios, and advisability of resolution through settlement. His experience, integrity and very personal approach place Bing Bush, Jr. of Bush Law Offices at the top of any client’s list.

Although his hourly rate is competitive, he states it’s all about how long something takes. His firm, San Diego Biz Law, not only deals in litigation, contracts, acquisitions, employment and immigration law, but also runs a charity for abused dogs called the Black Tie CEO Club. San Diego Biz Law offers a number of services you won’t find in a traditional law firm. Steven Riznyk is a high–level negotiator and he has undone international kidnappings, extortion, blackmail, and career destruction with no money changing hands. His clients include close– to–apex–level politicians, movie producers, and other well–known individuals. He has handled hundreds of domestic disputes and produced a video program called Relationships 901, which will be released in March. The 6–hour program, with the help of 20 improv actors, helps demonstrate how to resolve both simple and complex relationship issues in a week. Additionally, for people who are single, it illustrates various personality profiles so that people don’t put their heart into a relationship that has no chance. A part of all the profits will be directed to the Black Tie CEO Club to help abused dogs. In addition to high–level negotiation, San Diego Biz Law offers in–house film production for the Internet and infomercial use, as well as consulting in a variety of business areas; Steven’s specialty is business process re–engineering. n youth, the businessmen of the future would gaze with admiration at their fathers, clad in strict business suits, briefcase in hand, the physical embodiment of success, and dream of the day when they, too, would walk with the brazen air of accomplishment. How many of those men grew to be the idolized epitome of success? The answer is few– but one San Diego businessman, Scott Kavanaugh, is the apotheosis of such ascension. As head of First Foundation, Inc. Kavanaugh’s knowledge of and experience in the complex world of banking is absolutely unparalleled. Not only does Kavanaugh lead First Foundation Bank, he also oversees First Foundation Advisors, a true anomaly in the world of banking as one of the few successful RIA (registered investment advisors) associated with a bank. Not only is Kavanaugh a successful businessman himself, his expertise guides others to similar successes. With grace and confidence, Kavanaugh pilots one of San Diego’s most stable financial institutions. Naturally, we wanted the scoop: how did he become so successful, in San Diego no less, a town renowned for its lack of business clout? When we asked, Kavanaugh answered, and we couldn’t wait to share with you. For all of you still aspiring to be like those businessmen of old, read on: Emily Glaser: What originally drew you to San Diego? Scott Kavanaugh: Since we formed the firm, we always had plans to offer our wealth management and banking solutions in San Diego.

We have been working with clients in San Diego since our inception. We officially opened our office in 2011 and are humbled at the tremendous support we have received. The business community, as well as the philanthropic community, have validated that our comprehensive wealth management platform is of value to them. It was important that we built a team of professionals that knew the local market and were well respected. A large portion of our new business is coming from San Diego, yet we also feel we have just gotten started. What is attractive about doing business in San Diego, especially given San Diego’s negative reputation regarding business? San Diego might have a negative reputation towards business in the mainstream media, but we actually see things a little differently. Even though we seemingly hear frequent stories of firms and professional athletes packing up and leaving town, from our perspective, San Diego represents the need to utilize solutions like the ones we provide. For instance, those living and working in San Diego need a professional to help them plan their wealth so they can preserve the San Diego lifestyle for themselves as well as future generations. They also need a banker who has the expertise and knows the local market to help finance their next business deal or real estate transaction. We provide all of these solutions for our clients and deliver them with an emphasis on the personal touch that is consistent with the way San Diegans want to do business. So what are some of the unique needs of San Diego’s residents

There are a few idiosyncrasies of doing business in San Diego, many of which stem from the different geographies and neighborhoods within San Diego. But from a business perspective, it is clear that many high– net–worth individuals have an interest in real estate as an investment vehicle. We see a high number of banking activities related to real estate in San Diego and our investment professionals are managing real estate as an asset class for most of our San Diego–based clients. Also, there is a class of successful business men and women in San Diego that have impressive track records, yet they are still finding time to enjoy all that San Diego has to offer. SAN DIEGO’S PREMIER GYMS, HEALTH CLUBS, AND FITNESS PROGRAMMING an Diego is known to outsiders as a mythical land of health, wellness and fitness. When tourists visit our sunny town, they never fail to observe the profundity of glistening, toned bodies dotting our sandy beaches, playing volleyball, catching waves in body-hugging wetsuits, or gliding past on longboards, lean bodies decked in skimpy bikinis and board shorts. These fabled perspectives of our city are actually well–founded: San Diego is consistently ranked in the top ten fittest cities in America. We are renowned for our perfect weather and wealth of outdoor activities—hiking, surfing, paddle boarding, skateboarding—which help us maintain these svelte physiques. But for many of us, we earn these muscled and lean shapes not on the beach, but in the gym. San Diego’s gyms are an integral part of our local society and culture. We log hours every week on treadmills, weight benches, and in classes, our sweat dripping to the thumping beats of our headphones and instructors. With all that time devoted to the gym, it needs to be a place we enjoy. We’ve rounded up the best gyms in San Diego so that those dreaded sweat sessions can turn into heralded, blissful excursions.

CrossFit South Vista offers 3,650 sq. ft. of training grounds. Inset: Owner Mike Coopman and Acacia Coopman.

CROSSFIT SOUTH VISTA The CrossFit craze hit San Diego and the nation several years ago; since then, dozens of the eponymous gyms have popped up over San Diego. But one of those CrossFit meccas, CrossFit South Vista, is a step above: with 3,650 square feet of training grounds and personalized, tiered group class programming, South Vista offers a unique and tough training program. We sat down with owner Mike Coopman, who has been training for over 8 years, to learn why CrossFit is more than just a trend and why South Vista is the place to do it. For anyone new to CrossFit or looking to reenter the community, the first question is: why choose CrossFit? “It makes fitness a lifestyle and it helps create balance,” says Coopman. “You become excited to go to the gym. CrossFit becomes the reason to get to sleep early, to pay attention to what you eat, to take quite time to stretch. It becomes a huge catalyst to living a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.” And regarding balance, he says, “If you only do strength training or you only run, then you are leaving huge gaps in your fitness. Within CrossFit you use the best ideas from strength training to get stronger, with a barbell and gymnastics, at the 60

same time as you become more anaerobic and aerobically fit. When you create balance between proper movement, strength and conditioning, you just live better.” According to Coopman, CrossFit isn’t just a workout, it’s a lifestyle and a community. Your whole life becomes healthier and happier and the pride you feel in your new self is practically palpable. So, why choose CrossFit South Vista, specifically? “The idea that sets us apart from all other gyms, CrossFit or not, is that everyone is unique and that a gym should not try to mold everyone to the same set program,” Coopman says. “The gym should be able to flow with everyone’s uniqueness so that each person gets the appropriate training for them.” With an unparalleled consultation and assessment program that ensures each member is set up with the best personalized program, CrossFit South Vista offers the best CrossFit programming in San Diego.

MENSWEAR, REFITTED A WORD WITH ANDY DUNN OF BONOBOS ON TAKING MENSWEAR TO THE NEXT LEVEL

W

B Y

B I A N C A

hat, exactly, is the most important aspect of fashion? According to Andy Dunn, founder and CEO of chic menswear brand Bonobos, Inc, the answer isn’t simple: “Authenticity. Which is funny, because a big part of fashion is imitation. So how do you interpret what’s right for you, by following others? In part, yes, but over time you have to know who you are if you are to be authentic. I believe this means that self-understanding is the key to fashion. I also take issue with the word itself, which implies that you have to be different. Part of great fashion is being the same.” Dunn is redefining what it means to be authentic, both personally and for his customers, through Bonobos. A Chicago native, Dunn began his revolution in 2007 with the introduction of a better–fitting pants line for men. This is when his vision came to life. He says his first pair were turquoise and it was that day that he fell in love with the brand. The innovative business model of Bonobos is driven by a great user experience and “Ninja” customer service, which has been featured in hundreds of publications, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Forbes and Entrepreneur. Not to mention, Dunn has appeared on many local and national news shows and was named to Crain’s “40 under 40” in 2013 and was also named one of Fortune magazine’s “Rising Retail Stars” in 2012. Bonobos defined a new model for vertically integrated fashion retail in the e–commece era. Eight years later, the brand has expanded from an online flagship into physical “Guideshop” locations, including our very own Westfield UTC in La Jolla. Dunn shares with FINE magazine what his brand is based on, what we can expect for San Diego and his best pieces of fashion advice.

K A S AW D I S H way to go, even after the massive revolutionary steps Bonobos has already taken. They began by bringing their mass–customized fit offering to shirts and suits, as well as the Guideshop model. The Guideshop model is just the beginning of a re–imagination of on–person clothing retail. Bonobos is set to have 16 Guideshops open by the end of March. What’s next for the company? A women’s line called AYR. “This is pronounced like the air you breathe, based on essential pieces one can’t live without. It’s also an acronym for all year round, which is the brand’s vision for what great women’s items can be.” On the San Diego Shop at Westfield UTC

As the first Guideshop opened in a mall, Dunn is excited to see if the model translates well to the environment. He says he ran the San Diego marathon back in 2006 and fell in love with the city then. Offering complimentary beers from San Diego’s favorite Stone Brewery during appointments is one detail that is a perfect example of the brand as an experience. He shares, “the Guideshop at Westfield UTC is designed to make our customers feel relaxed, almost like you’re at your buddy’s apartment—this is a first in a mall environment for any brand.” On His Favorite Item

Dunn says, “I am obsessed right now with this Bonobos Stetson top–coat. It’s a gorgeous Italian wool, with a bit of stretch, it’s white and gray, and has a gray collar. It’s incredible. I just wore it to a wedding in Atlanta, and not a single person failed to say ‘nice coat.’ I felt so honored that it was ours.”

On What Sets Bonobos Apart

The brand offers a bundle of high–quality, great–fitting clothes and a hassle–free shopping experience across brands. It goes beyond the label of a menswear brand and enters the realm of an experience. “Simply put, these are the best products in menswear offered at the best price points for the quality, with the best service you can imagine,” he says. Bonobos is based on three things: fit, service, and creativity. The web– driven model offers more fit choice and selection than any other brand. This is a mass–customized offering, something no one else does. Their service model is best in class, with “Ninjas” who take care of you online and “Guides” who take care of you in stores, meaning you never have to stumble through those racks alone again. As for creativity, Bonobos is re– defining the industry with the consumer in mind. Dunn and his team are consistently a step ahead, offering their customers the best, freshest trends in men’s fashion, even as they maintain their devotion to classic silhouettes and prints. “That’s the most fun, being on the front-lines of the creativity at the company,” says Dunn. On What’s Next

As far as raising the bar in menswear, Dunn believes the brand still has a long

On His Best Fashion Advice

When asked to share his best piece of fashion advice, Dunn suggests, “Women don’t need fashion advice from men. It’s the other way around. So I’ll advise the guys. Guys, it’s 2015. If you don’t have one already, get yourself a tux. And, if you already have one, I presume it’s a black one. Maybe it’s time for one other color?” As a model of his own personal style, he shares, “I wore a gray tuxedo with cowboy boots to a wedding in Providence, with a brown and orange paisley bow–tie. I felt like Paul Revere. Maybe it was because it was a frigid New England night. I guess what I’m saying is: make sure it fits, and have fun.” FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

CROCE’S PARK WEST REINVENTS SAN DIEGO CUISINE AND MUSIC W R I T T E N & P H OTO G R A P H E D BY M A R I A D E S I D E R ATA M O N TA N A

hen Jim and Ingrid Croce fell madly in love, Ingrid was a 16–year–old artist, a gymnast, a folk singer and a high school sophomore who thought business was a four letter word. “It was the early sixties and Jim was a college sophomore at Villanova University. We met at a contest and Jim asked me if I would sing with him,” says Croce. “We wrote songs, obtained an album deal with Capitol Records and traveled one hundred thousand miles a year throughout the United States in our beat–up Volkswagen, singing our songs. Jim was determined to be independent and make music his profession.” When Ingrid discovered she was going to have a child, Jim wrote “Time in a Bottle,” “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” “Operator” and “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” After two straight years on the road, Jim’s songs finally hit the top of the charts.

The couple moved to San Diego so Jim could host the Johnny Carson Show and act in a movie with Cheech and Chong. Sadly, at the peak of his career and while on tour, Jim died in a plane crash in Natchitoches, Louisiana. As a twenty–six year old widow and single mom, Ingrid had no idea how she was going to raise her son alone, but she never gave up. After thirty years of pioneering San Diego’s Gaslamp District and keeping Jim’s music and memory alive at Croce’s Restaurant & Jazz Bar, Ingrid lost her lease. She immediately found a new home for her restaurant in the neighborhood community of Banker’s Hill. The new Croce’s Park West provides patrons with a delectably inviting urban experience synchronized with live music. Her restaurant in place, Ingrid knew she needed a phenomenal

executive chef. With twelve years of experience in the kitchens of some of the top Bay Area restaurants, she knew chef Russell Rummer would fit the bill. Rummer received a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality with an emphasis on menu planning and food costs in 1998, then his Culinary Arts degree in 1999. Heading to the West Coast, Rummer became Executive Sous Chef at MC2 under Chef Todd Davies in 2002 and perfected the art of seasonal menu planning as Chef de Cuisine at both Absinthe and Acme Chop House. At the end of 2006, Rummer took over the kitchens at Roots Restaurant and Daffodil Restaurant, both at The Orchard Hotel in San Francisco. Rummer became chef and General Manager for the Sellers Market’s fast–casual/sustainable chain restaurants in October 2008, putting his production, hospitality and menu planning skills to their best use. From there, Rummer took the position of Director of Operations and Executive Chef for Barbacoa and Table 24 Restaurant Group in Orinda, California. At Croce’s Park West, Rummer offers a natural and fresh approach to contemporary American cuisine. From the pomegranate seeds for the kale salad to the oysters flown in daily, everything is fresh. He developed the menu to include a large number of choices, namely cheese and charcuterie, raw bar options, bar snacks, appetizers, salads, meats, seafood and desserts. A must–have dish for the the gentlemen is the Maple Glazed Cider Brined Double Thick Pork Chop with gruyere–fennel potato au gratin and a fire roasted tomato. “Rummer brought us his fabulous talents and we are thrilled that he is helping bring San Diego cuisine to a whole new level of excellence,” says Croce. “In addition, our sommelier Michael Simpson has a fabulous way of making wine accessible for everyone, offering five–course wine dinners with exclusive wineries on the fourth Tuesday of every month.” Within the restaurant, there are distinctive areas for diners; the main dining room serves as a focal point and offers a more intimate setting for guests who want to converse in plush and stylish platform booths. An interactive bar offers live music daily and a generous patio has an extended cabana–style awning that opens into the bar room, dominated by a long 1930’s wooden bar for happy hour specials, cocktails, 18 draft beers, bar snacks and full dining. The Expatriate Room is separated from the front of the restaurant by a paned–glass partition, across which a burgundy velvet curtain can be drawn to shut out light when movies are shown or on other nights when there are group events. Ingrid Croce and her husband Jimmy Rock continue to keep Jim Croce’s music and memory alive by providing a special venue in The Expatriate Room for musicians to express their passion and independence. “Our company culture is built to inspire, respect and to exceed expectations,” says owner Ingrid Croce. “Every guest is important to us and their comfort and satisfaction is critical.” (crocesparkwest.com)

Nothing is better than an Italian–American Cioppino, which originated in San Francisco. Send your man fishing and transform his catch of the day into a wonderful tomato–based fish stew (or for an adventure closer to home, there are always wonderful fish markets for him to visit). Simple but sublime, the combination of seafood in this recipe is perfect for a romantic dinner for two; feel free to double or even triple the recipe for a larger crowd of friends. For some amusing spaghetti twirling, this Cioppino is perfect served over pasta or with a large sourdough baguette.

More Than a CORONADO’S TAVERN SERVES CASUAL ELEGANCE EFFORTLESSLY BY M AT T Z A M U D I O

have long been perplexed by the question of how one restaurant can satisfy the diverse palettes of thousands of individuals. At a glance, it seems a feat too enormous to overcome; with so many particular tongues and varying backgrounds, how could one menu satisfy such an expanse of tastes? The answer to this questions came to me shortly after stepping down the candlelit stairway that leads into Tavern. Located in the heart of Coronado Island along Orange Avenue, Tavern is a bustling and artistic food epicenter that lies below the main road. Brainchild of designer and architect John Welsh, Tavern is an eatery created by the genius and passion of an artist rather than the monetary incentives of a businessman. Originally, Welsh was solely part of the design phase of the restaurant where he then became a small partner and ultimately majority owner. He describes his early involvement with the restaurant saying, “I thought it would be a fun hobby, turns out it’s a lot more than a hobby, it’s a lifestyle.” Welsh’s progressive vision can be seen in every square inch of his restaurant, which is themed around salvage material. The walls are lined with recycled wood and brick, the chandeliers are flamboyantly mismatched and the rustic tables are set with mason jars, candles and sunflowers. As I talked more with Welsh about the aesthetic feel of the restaurant, he explained to me the goal of his layout: “The idea is for people to feel comfortable. Like the food, the design is sophisticated but not intimidating, allowing for people to feel comfortable amidst the highest quality of food.” This anti-esoteric view is part of what makes Tavern such an inviting place. I felt welcomed and, as Welsh had hoped, comfortable the entire time I was there. After taking an initial look at the menu, it became hard for me to put my finger on exactly what type of food Tavern serves. With an obvious 70

influence from every corner of the world, I slowly came to realize that this was one of those fabled restaurants that everyone could enjoy. Head Chef, Itze’ Behar, decoded the tongues and palettes of the world. Coinciding with Welsh’s vision of a restaurant that is comfortable and sophisticated, Behar provides a menu filled with approachable dishes done at the highest level and with only the best ingredients. Hailing from nearby Mexico, Behar is an ambitious and intuitive chef. In her early 20’s she opened a restaurant in Mexico, earning lots of success for her diverse dishes. After working in various restaurants along the California coast and exchanging knowledge with prestigious chefs like John Paul Carmona and David Kinch, Behar met Welsh and their styles “clicked.” Luckily for us, the result of this genius duo is the mouthwatering and ever–changing menu of Tavern. During a conversation with Behar regarding the locality of her food, she explained to me that buying local isn’t her first priority, “I wouldn’t say buying local is my first priority. I simply look for the highest quality seasonal ingredients and often that means local.” She further explains, “To be female in this industry means facing adversity. Now that I’m here, I want to offer meals similar to those cooked at home, only at a higher level. I want people to feel good when eating my food and I want families to feel safe in knowing that they are getting the best ingredients possible.” Welsh’s and Behar’s creative visions mesh to create a beautiful, wide-ranging menu where comfort food meets fine dining. The menu features all the classics with a modern twist: a chicken pot pie with a fresh, flaky puff pastry crust or a burger whose patty is both bacon and beef, topped with blistered shisheto peppers. My first course, Suzie’s Farm Organic Winter Squash Soup, was a meal in strong support of their philosophy. The soup, which is only on the menu while squash is in season, contains maple syrup, brown

butter, creme fraiche, green tomato croutons, crispy Spanish chorizo, and three types of squash. The result: excellent. Its creamy consistency was full of flavor but not heavy, like other cream-based soups. As I ate, I began to further understand what John meant about sophisticated yet approachable comfort food. Chef Behar also served to me one of her favorites, the Grilled Local Halibut Tacos. With Behar’s established coastal reputation, I had high expectations for anything she cooked involving fish and she met and exceeded every one of those expectations with this scrumptious meal. Composed of fresh halibut, green cabbage, red onions, lime crema, quick pickled radish, herb pico de gallo, topped with cilantro micro greens and laid on a bed of hand made corn tortillas produced in–house, this dish defined for me just how Behar transformed Tavern from drinking hole to fine restaurant. Even the bar program circulates around Tavern’s ethos of fresh and high quality ingredients. Filip Zaborek, Tavern’s bar manager, describes the bar’s style in simple, fresh terms: “We’re concentrating on fresh juices, homemade syrups, a fantastic array of spirits, and a great line-up of local San Diego draft beers.” The cocktail menu is full of a variety of tantalizing treats, including the Blueberry Jam Gin Cocktail, designed by Zaborek himself and mixed with only the finest, freshest ingredients and spirits, including imported blueberry jam. Tavern also recently began infusing their own spirits. My personal favorite? The house–infused strawberry tequila, which makes the best margarita in the world. The concept of Tavern is one I’ve never before encountered. Behar and Welsh mastered the art of taking dishes and creating new, healthier, tastier versions of those beloved classics. The duo have blown expectations out of the proverbial water in their mission to provide an extraordinary and unique dining experience.

rue to its name, which translates to “it’s so good,” Si Bon delights its patrons in every way. From the food to the service to the entire ambience, this Rancho Mirage eatery on the corner of Country Club Dr. and Monterey Ave. is sure to please. In its second year after a major remodel, Si Bon is enjoying a banner season. The visionary behind the fresh, new concept is owner Chef Philippe Caupain along with his wife Edith. As you enter this busy yet comfortable restaurant, you’ll be greeted as though you are family. Inspired by the cuisine from his native Belgium, Caupain lends his own unique flair and touch to each and every dish. Early on, Si Bon developed a legion of loyal patrons that come to enjoy what can be described as a “menu of comfort food meeting with a European flair and finesse.” Upon entering, you are immediately drawn to the tall, red–backed stools which line the large mirrored bar. The soft, buttery walls of the main dining area are accented with murals portraying the streets and buildings of Brussels. The creamy walls, bright red café chairs and 72

Caesar stone tables lend the restaurant an authentically European feel. The inviting outdoor covered patio is always busy but quiet enough for pleasant conversation. Si Bon offers a complete breakfast menu daily, from creating your own omelet to mango–stuffed Belgian waffles topped with caramelized berries. For lunch, bite into the best burger in town, an 8 oz. angus patty with Tillamook cheddar, or a quiche with leeks and shitake mushrooms. For an appetizer, try the popular 9 Holers escargot waffle or the pan–fried veal sweetbreads. When it comes to dinner, several main course dishes stand out, including the mussels and the veal wiener schnitzel. Si Bon also offers several twists on comfort–food classics, like beef stroganoff or fried buttermilk Shelton chicken with country gravy. The wine selections at Si Bon are plentiful and the restaurant even offers a state–of–the–art draft wine system. Si Bon is one of the best new dining options here in the desert. Whether you settle inside in its charming dining room or outside on the quaint patio, this Belgian–inspired restaurant offers a transcendent experience and, of course, great food.

The Old Globe Theatre’s The Playwrights Project’s 30th Anniversary The Old Globe Theatre Photographs Courtesy of Reminisce Photography The Old Globe held a special celebration on the closing night of the Playwrights Project this year. This season was a special marker noting thirty years of performance. Eight winning scripts were chosen from amongst almost six hundred submitted from across the state in the California Young Playwrights Contest. Young writers had the opportunity to see their plays come to life at the Old Globe, performed by professional actors and actresses. Four scripts received full professional productions and the other four received staged readings in the highly regarded Festival of New Voices.

This opening night was especially poignant, given the recent revitalization of the San Diego Opera after it nearly closed its curtains forever. The pre and post-party took place at the US Grant Hotel and were attended by 200 fans, as well as the cast of La Boheme. Patrons enjoyed appetizers and a carving station, as well as the Company’s signature cocktail for La Boheme, a French 75.

A Tradition of Artistic Excellence NORTH COUNTY ARTS CENTER CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY BY ERICA MINER

alifornia Center for the Arts, Escondido, has much to celebrate. This year commemorates the Center’s 20th Anniversary season. After a three–year break in their operations, the newly–invigorated organization has reentered the Southern California arts scene with energy and ambition to present top entertainment to arts aficionados. The Center features some of the world’s most prominent performers in a diverse range of programs with wide appeal, from classical music to Broadway shows to popular performers such as Garrison Keillor and also sponsors museum exhibits and education programs. According to Escondido Mayor Sam Abed, “As Escondido’s cultural icon, the Center draws audiences to our city, driving the economy and showcasing our investment in the arts.” In this interview Executive Director Jerry VanLeeuwen adds his own perspective. EM: Congratulations on California Center for the Arts, Escondido’s 20th Anniversary season! How would you describe your distinctive venue? JVL: The Center’s unique campus is situated on 12 sprawling acres of Grape Day Park and includes a 1,523–seat concert hall, a 404–seat theater, a contemporary art museum, art and dance studios and a full–service conference center with meeting and banquet facilities. The Center also runs an extensive education program and produces free community events, such as the Jazz Jam Sessions, Holiday Tree Lighting, Day of the Dead, 4th of July and WOW First Wednesdays performances. Our offerings attract over 250,000 people to our campus each year. What is the Arts Center’s mission? Our mission is to bring people together to discover, create and celebrate the visual and performing arts. Tell us about the Center’s re–launch. The re-launch was based on the Board of Trustees’ desire to re–enliven the Center through expanded programming while not incurring the financial risks seen in previous years. Solid market research, strategic marketing and public relations efforts allowed the Center to bring performing arts into a positive cash flow. In addition, new collaborations with other arts organizations have created a base for even more broad scope and exciting programs next season and beyond. Significant growth is anticipated in Visual Arts, Performing Arts and Education programs. A very good plan indeed. What are some of the highlights of this Anniversary season? Broadly speaking, one of the main highlights of the season was presenting diverse programming that entices and engages audiences from in and around Escondido. Our intention in creating such an eclectic season was multifaceted: we wanted to attract new audiences, re–energize our previous patrons and create an experience 80

THE HANDSHAKE THAT BROKE 25 YEARS OF SILENCE at the Center that will leave people wanting to come back for more. More specifically, other highlights include the sellouts of country music legend Merle Haggard, the boundary breaking duo the 2Cellos and Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook, along with near– sellouts of ukulele sensation Jake Shimabukuro and the big group known as the “little orchestra,” Pink Martini. We are looking forward to stand–up comedian Kathleen Madigan and the improv show Whose Live Anyway? Sounds exciting. How does input from the public impact your programming? Input from the public certainly influences our programming. This year, we have begun surveying our audience after each performance and have utilized this feedback to inform our decision–making on future programs and performances. What have been some of the most memorable artists and events in recent seasons? There was a moment in Jesse Cook’s show where he sang Simon and Garfunkel’s “Cecilia.” At first, the audience sat quietly captivated by Jesse’s talent, but he then encouraged everyone to sing along with him. The crowd rose to their feet and joined along with the singing. To my left, I saw colleagues who had dedicated themselves to the Center through the years of successes and challenges. To my right, I saw faces young and old, new and familiar. These moments of celebration and community engagement are the realization of our mission and the reasons why we do what we do. The importance of community input and outreach to younger audiences cannot be overestimated. Do you have anything you’d like to add to the above? Our new season will reestablish and advance the Center as an essential component of arts and entertainment in San Diego. Our vibrant lineup, along with our art museum and community events, provide so many opportunities for people to experience the power of performance. Many thanks, Jerry. You’re very welcome. It’s Springtime WHAT IS GROWING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? BY BOB MOREY

arch is one of my favorite months of the year. Just a couple of weeks ago in Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most beloved and furry seasonal prognosticator, saw his shadow and forecast six more weeks of winter. Twenty more inches of snow dropped overnight in the Northeast and ten thousand flights were canceled. But what that meant for us in Southern California was merely a drop of the thermometer closer to 70°. These warmer spring nights we are enjoying arrived with perfect timing as all of our arts across the county are offering up a sprint run to the closing of the 2014-15 season. China has had a major influence on the offerings across the county this month. “Shun Yun” just closed at the Center for the Preforming Arts and before you could say ‘chopsticks’ The San Diego Opera presents John Adams “Nixon In China” over in the Civic Center on March 14th, 17th, 20th and 22nd. The story of President Richard Nixon’s historic trip to Beijing in 1972 for his goodwill meetings with China’s Chairman Mao TseTung and Premier Chou En–Lai are set to music and dance in this show. The gateway to China stays open as The Old Globe welcomes Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman, who makes her long–awaited San Diego directing debut with “The White Snake” (also written and directed by Zimmerman), playing on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the

Globe’s Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run March 21st through 25th. “The White Snake” runs through April 26th and is sure to be one of most talked about productions of the year. It’s not all about China as the City Ballet of San Diego presents “The Balanchine Spectacular” on March 6th, 7th & 8th at The Spreckles Theatre. The City Ballet of San Diego is honored to be recognized by The George Balanchine Trust as having the technical skills and artistic quality to present these three full–length masterworks choreographed by the 20th century genius George Balanchine with live music performed by The City Ballet Orchestra under the direction of Conductor John Nettles. Up the street at Symphony Hall, The San Diego Symphony has another very special engagement for us as master violinist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman opens a two week San Diego residency. Opening on March 21st with a night of Ludwig Van Beethoven with special guest pianist Angela Cheng that includes Beethoven’s revolutionary Symphony No. 3 “Eroica.” On the following weekend (March 27th -29th), Maestro Zukerman concludes his stay with an evening of Strauss and Bach for the first half of the evening, where he will be joined by the Met Opera’s Concertmaster and former SDSO Young Artist Competition winner David Chan for Bach’s “Double Concerto” for violins. The second half of the program takes a decidedly darker turn as the Russian composer Shostakovich finally has his say about the trauma of totalitarianism after the death of Stalin in his “Symphony No. 10.”
