SELLER INSIGHT Donegal Cottage is a detached property that began life two hundred and fifty years ago as two terraced cottages, and for the past thirty-five years has been the much-loved home of the present owners, Paula and James.

James explains that when he found the cottage he was immediately attracted by the character and cosy atmosphere created by this charming and traditional old world country cottage. He also wanted to be immersed in a rural village community setting and yet it was only a thirty-minute commute into Derby for his work and similar for Paula to East Midlands Airport, and just ten minutes away from the attractive market town of Ashbourne offering shopping, leisure, essential services and sporting facilities – the best of all worlds at that time.

Just over 10 years ago Paula and James embarked on an extensive modernisation project for the cottage while at the same time taking great care to retain as much of the original character and features as possible. The living kitchen style, underfloor heating through most of the ground floor, the wood burners, French windows opening onto the patio and garden and new master bedroom all ensured that the appeal of its period features combine seamlessly with the conveniences of the twenty first century.

Paula says the hub of the home is the open plan living kitchen and lounge, which is a sociable and yet efficient space where they can entertain friends who are able to gather around the central island while relaxing and chatting with the cook busy in the well-equipped kitchen zone. It is also a lovely setting for sitting by the French windows or stepping out onto the patio with the inspiring view of the garden stretching before you and watching the seasons unfold in the countryside beyond. In the wintertime James and Paula especially enjoy the warm and cosy feeling of sitting with their feet up in front of the wood-burning stove.

Paula takes great pleasure from spending time in the good-sized garden tending to a variety of flowers, fruits and vegetables and sharing produce and gardening tips with neighbours.

They find Yeaveley to be a friendly and supportive community with a real social mix of people ranging from farming folk to professionals and of all ages. The community spirit is further enhanced by having a well-run village pub where organised events help to bring the locals together. And the children of the village can be seen hopping on the bus to take them to local schools, for example the excellent Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Ashbourne.

A particular pleasure of James and Paula is setting off from the front door of the cottage with their dog for walks along the several and easily accessible public footpaths on the outskirts of the village. They also enjoy their excursions when they set off a bit further afield to explore the delights of the Peak District.

James and Paula are relocating but know they will miss the cottage, the village and the beautiful countryside and wish it were just possible to pick it all up and bring it with them.*
