The minutes I set eyes on this house I thought it was just magical,” says the owner. “It forms part of Kentwyns, a small community of just four period properties set in the most beautiful location. My house is a late Victorian addition to the main Hall and House, and it’s absolutely stunning to look at. It has a very pretty garden to the front and sun-drenched courtyard at the back, and inside it’s spacious and bright and full of character.”
“When I bought it almost six years ago, structurally it was in great shape, but the interior was very dated and in desperate need of some TLC, so I’ve spent the past five years renovating and remodelling it. I wanted to make it more conducive to modern living, but I was also very keen to maintain its original character and charm, and I’d say I’ve struck a really nice balance between the old and the new. I added a side extension, which has created a lovely big living room with a wall of sliding doors that lead out into the courtyard, and the living room is also open to the new kitchen, which I moved from a smaller room into the middle of the house, so it now feels like the heart of the home. All the fixtures and fittings have been upgraded, I’ve decorated throughout using heritage paint colours and beautiful wallpapers, and the old, detached garage, which is now connected to the main house, has been converted into a gorgeous studio. The house still has a cottagey feel in terms of its character, but there’s now an easy, open flow to the layout, and I love the fact that when the sun is shining and the sliding doors are pushed back, the courtyard becomes this amazing extension of the living space.”
“The house itself is absolutely gorgeous, but the setting is also a standout feature. When the gates are shut it’s so quiet and private that I feel as if I’m in my own little world, but I’ve got the peace of mind of knowing everything I might want or need is very close at hand. I’m only five or ten minutes from Redhill station, from where it takes just half an hour to travel into London; there’s a shop which is also a Post Office, a nice pub and highly regarded school down the road in the village, and it takes no time at all to drive into Reigate. It’s a very convenient spot, but it’s also perfect for heading out on long country walks. Just across the road is a route we call Narnia. You head down a tunnel under the road then all of a sudden there’s this amazing open vista of fields for as far as the eye can see… It really is a beautiful spot.”
“My children have flown the nest and so I’m relocating to a different area, but I’m going to be so sad to leave this house. I love absolutely everything about it. The house is spacious and bright, but at the same time so warm and cosy, and my garden is like a little oasis. It’s a place you can’t help but fall in love with.”*
