The real showstopper is the drawing room. A stunning, original inglenook fireplace could be the back drop to a cosy reading corner, whilst the room beyond opens up into a double height, hugely impressive entertaining space. The extended drawing room was once used as a school room for local village children in the early 1900’s. SELLER INSIGHT What is your favourite room of the house and why?

It is fair to say, we have many favourite rooms. However, it must be said when people enter our drawing room they just stop and take in the unexpected vaulted ceilings, the beautiful craftmanship of the medieval ceilings, the expansive fireplace, and large Victorian glass window originally installed by a former school mistress and her family when the drawing room served as the village school. We have enjoyed many after dinner moments with guests by the fire playing games, creating lovely memories. Yet, it is just as welcoming for a quiet Sunday morning to read the newspapers or a book. It could also serve as a drawing room ideal for playing music as there is ample space for a piano. But my other favourite rooms are our light filled and amply spaced kitchen, the master bedroom with its vaulted ceilings and views to the garden and our home office which has historic features with garden views.

Who do you think would be the next ideal owner?

Anyone who values being surrounded by the beauty of the English countryside, a character-filled house that offers historic features yet modern conveniences like a home office, an ample kitchen for home cooks (i.e. electrified Aga, Gas hob and electric oven, American sized Fridge/freezer and larder), utility room, and boot room with the added value of entertaining spaces inside and out. The ability to commute and travel within an hour to major cities and beautiful villages like Lacock and Castle Combe, too. The house is also ideal for home working.

What do you love most about the house and why?

The moment you step through the front door, you are enveloped in a wonderful sense of elegance, cosiness and character. The house is distributed perfectly for families, guests and entertaining. There are ideal places for gathering or individual spaces to settle down with a good book or snooze (our guests often feel so welcome and relaxed here they just decompress and have enjoyed a nice nap up in the guest room, the upstairs snug or our garden sofas). In the summer months, the cottage garden continues that welcoming feel and we have loved entertaining family, friends and neighbours in our garden. There is an area for dining and a separate area in the garden that has plenty of space for large sofas and hammocks- perfectly situated to witness the glorious Wiltshire sunsets over a glass of wine. The adjoining acre of garden has been host to friendly cricket and football matches (sometimes with wine glasses still in hands).

What do you love about the local community?

From the moment we moved in, we were welcomed by the village. We have village meetings, summer get togethers, annual Christmas drinks, safari supper, and the occassional skittle evenings at one of the local pubs. There is also a very popular art class given by one of our very talented villagers. We are fortunate enough to get her hand made Christmas cards each year. One of which included a sketch of our house. The residents are a nice mix of families (young to teens), local agricultural and dairy farmers, self-employed entrepreneurs, City Commuters and retirees. During the pandemic, villagers volunteered to help run errands for our more vulnerable and elderly residents. A testament to the warm vibe we have felt here. There is often someone you can catch up with dog walking. There is a local horse livery here too so it is also a village for horse lovers. I also love that I can have my country space and in just minutes I have access to a petrol station, supermarkets and the market town of Devizes, which has a theatre, shops and annual food festivals, plus visiting famous entertainers at the Corn Exchange. Oh, and I can’t forget the weekly market, tea rooms, cafes pubs and the antique and vintage shops.

How easy is it to commute from here?

Very easy. You can get direct trains to Paddington or Reading from Pewsey station which is about a 10 minute drive.

I also love that I can drive and be in Bath in 45 minutes and Bristol in a hour. Oxford is also just an hour away as is the coast. For those that travel for business, Heathrow is just over an hour.

What made you choose this property over others that were available at the time?

The character and charm of the interior - those vaulted ceilings - with the combination of a cottage garden with a larger surrounding garden, which is ideal and safe for children to play and for us to potter in the garden. Our dogs also love it. We can also take the dogs for a walk just outside our door to the fields and river trail. We have two pubs right on our doorstep, too. The Pewsey Vale where the house is located is stunning. It’s like driving through an oil painting. We never tire of the drive towards Allington/Pewsey on the back roads where you will spot one of Wiltshire’s white chalk horses carved into the landscape. We once were driving back from a summer holiday in Santorini, known the world over for its sunsets, and our youngest said as we drove through the hills that we had better sunsets.
