Sail Away Debra Hall speaks with international yacht broker Chris Cecil-Wright and gains insight into the eyes and mind of one of the superyacht industry’s most influential and respected yacht brokers.

FINEANDCOUNTRY.COM | THE COLLECTION | 17 |

H

aving spent 17 years at Edmiston, Chris Cecil-Wright took a leap of faith and founded his own brokerage house in 2013. His plan was simple; to have fewer clients, and to service them better. Armed with the most precious of commodities; the trust of his clients, an in-depth knowledge of his craft, and the ability to find humour in any situations, Cecil Wright & Partners was born. Is there a certain way you prefer to work with clients? I take the time to build a close relationship with my clients as I believe that is a driver for good business; you can have frank discussions and a deeper understanding of the value, size and quality of yacht they have in mind. That’s my tactic per se; to know my clients well. This is also why I have fewer clients, so I can dedicate time to look after them properly. Why do you think Cecil Wright & Partners is successful? To put it plainly, we do what we do well! We’re a small and highly experienced team of specialists who provide a personal, discreet and reliable service. While I give the term ‘brokerage’ a nod, as it’s technically what we do as a company, we intrinsically sell relationships and deliver a lot more than a matching service. I invariably put my hand on my heart and say we delivered value. There’s a big market out there, both for sales and charter, with thousands of boats to choose from. We add value to a relationship by knowing the boats and their histories well. We focus frequently on Feadship; their exacting in standards makes them exceptional in their sphere. An example of their finesse; if you run your toe over the teak on board a Feadship, there is a small camber around the edge so water doesn’t collect – no other boat has that! We continue to develop our relationship with the shipyard and endorse their craftmanship.

know you and your preferences; no round-robin marketing emails of big white boats required! It’s imperative that you like – and trust - the broker you will be working with as you will find yourself spending a lot of time with them on your search. Have you seen a change in clientele over the last 25 years? In the last 10 to 20 years, I’ve noticed an increase in female owners. Also, the Americans took a back seat when the Russians were in town, but the market is back in force now. Asia is also becoming more prominent unsurprisingly. Do you ever disagree with your clients’ ideas? When I was younger (and arguably more naïve!), I used to sell a client whatever they wanted. Now I feel my reputation is more important than just agreeing and doing a deal. I am happy to point people in the right direction if I don’t want to be involved; I have the experience to know that it will come back to bite you and one unhappy client is one unhappy client too many! Do you have a particular career highlight? I enjoyed building MADAME GU. I introduced the designer, created the contract, and was involved in the build and delivery itself. It was intense, but the most rewarding projects always are. I also delivered SHERPA which was an extraordinary process; we started off with a brief to build a shadow boat and ended up with an iconic explorer! How does the future look for Cecil Wright & Partners? Very much a continuation of the past and present; fewer clients, serviced better. We are in a position to expand and grow, but – true to plan – we won’t. We will continue to invest in our boutique business, and keep it lean and focused on the large custom pedigree yacht market.

Perfect Timing Cartier Pasha In the mid 1930s, the Pasha of Marrakech asked Cartier to make a watch that could be worn in his swimming pool, and so the Cartier Pasha was born. The original watch had a metal grille on the crystal to protect it, as well as a screw down cap that sealed the crown from the water.

Over the decades, Cartier has launched several timepieces that have been influenced by the original model from the Pasha line. Both men’s and women’s watches that carry the Pasha name can certainly be discovered: These models are reminiscent of the original watch from 1932 but feature several innovative mechanisms and enhancements.

Grand Designs Fine & Country Jersey speaks with leading interior designer Henriette von Stockhausen.

H

enriette von Stockhausen, co-founder of VSP Interiors, studied at City & Guild of London Art Schools and Sotheby’s where she honed her appreciation and love for antique furniture and decorative design from 17th Century through to 20th Century. She was also very much involved in country house sales which fed her appetite for beautiful architecture of historical interest. Deciding to move into interior design Henriette studied at the prestigious Inchbald School of Design. On graduating she gained experience with leading interior designers including Stephen Ryan who had been head of David Hicks Design. She also had a spell in theatre design which enabled her to indulge her more flamboyant side and made her realise just how much she relishes any challenge. VSP Interiors was established in 2000 with business partner Jane Petti. When Henriette was 10 years old she had two hobbies: horse-riding and collecting glass. ‘It was a bit of a weird interest for a little girl,’ she laughs, ‘but I would always

dedicate a shelf or corner in my bedroom to displaying my collections. I particularly loved 17th to 20th-century bohemian glass in vibrant colours.’ Her childhood and early years were spent in Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. These European cultures have widened her knowledge and appreciation of international architecture and the arts and her particular passion is working with listed buildings-she has a very grounded knowledge in both architectural history and quality craftsmanship that is needed together with a wealth of quality artisan craftsmen artists and specialist suppliers. Having grown up surrounded by incredible antiques Henriette enjoys including them in her schemes. She loves combining rich colours, interesting prints and antiques to create a layered interior with lots of interest and a warm lived in comfort. “When planning the interiors of period properties, we believe in preserving quality craftsmanship and architectural features while introducing contemporary elements through the use of colour, texture and styling. The juxtaposition of the new with the old creates a modern look that works equally well in the town and country.”

Past projects VSP have worked on various wonderful houses all over England and Europe. A particular favourite was a wonderfully romantic Georgian country house in Devon. This was a joy to work on as it was a true restoration project with attention to the minutest detail. They have undertook a large renovation of a grade 1* listed country mansion in Buckinghamshire which involved working with some great people in the industry, using amazing custom-made materials, antiques and even a custom paint colour for the house - another wonderful client with a very special result. Other recent projects included the restoration of a nine bedroom Castle in Scotland for a private family, a Georgian house in Hampshire and an estate cottage on the Dorset coast. Upcoming projects VSP is currently completing several large projects in the English countryside including another project on the Dorset coast and two manor houses plus a large old farmhouse in Oxfordshire. New commissions include projects in USA and Germany, a Lutyens house in Surrey and an Arts & Crafts house in Yorkshire. As an interior designer Henriette is always commissioning custom-made pieces for her clients such as vanity units, mirrored four poster beds and dining tables – unique items that are difficult to find. As such Henriette is developing her own furniture collection of ‘out of the ordinary’ pieces which are inspired by rare antiques combined with classic or contemporary design elements. www.vspinteriors.com
