The South African National Convention 2021 was recently held as a virtual event. In his welcoming address, CEO of Fine & Country South Africa Stephen de Stadler said, “This business we are all involved in is not a 9 to 5 job. In fact, it is not even a job – I see it more as a passion.” Guest speaker Chantell Ilbury, author of Mind of a Fox, gave an informative strategic outlook for property in South Africa, after which it was on to the awards.
With restrictions easing, there are new opportunities to fundraise. Following the announcement on 12 March that people in the UK can travel locally for exercise in Wales, Managing Director of Fine & Country Cardiff, Dan Thomas, wasted no time in getting his fundraiser underway. Dan set his sights on walking the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path during lockdown. Dan was reliant on national restrictions lifting, but on 16 March, he was finally able to get on his way.
While 2020 was undoubtedly a tough year, the awards presented to agents and licensees were heavily contested and, in some cases, won by the narrowest of margins. This was evident in the Licensee of the Year Award, where eight licensees were in contention, with Fine & Country Midrand taking home the trophy. Congratulations to all of the agents and licensees who walked away winners.
Dan is raising funds for The Fine & Country Foundation, as well as The Wallich, a homelessness charity that works across Wales. The Wallich has three core objectives: to get people off the streets, keep them off the streets, and create opportunities such as employment, volunteering and education. All of the funding Dan raises on his walk will go towards helping The Wallich in their 2020-2025 plan to rebuild their community, create a place where homelessness can be solved, respond to the needs of staff and clients, and become a psychologically informed organisation.

magine a place where Covid is virtually unknown, an island enclave with mountains, pristine forests and shimmering sandy beaches lapped by a multi-hued ocean that is sometimes turquoise, sometimes cobalt, and sometimes emerald. There are cities on this island, too, although none large. Just big enough to support a thriving arts scene, local produce markets, creative food endeavours and a calendar of events and festivals to keep the populace – and its visitors – entertained. The island is Tasmania, Australia’s smallest state, lying some 150 miles south of the state of Victoria. Small though it looks, next to the vast mass of the Australian mainland, the state is half the size of England, albeit with a significantly smaller population. Perhaps that’s why you can still find places where there’s nary a soul in sight. Looking out over an almost five-mile stretch of sparkling white sand at Friendly Beaches on Tasmania’s east coast, there are few signs of human life, bar some footprints in the sand. Oystercatchers strut across the flat rocks at one end of the beach, dipping their long orange beaks into the rock pools in search of morning tea. At the other end of the sand, boulders lie strewn across the point, as if cast there like dice from the hand of a giant. My mother Judy and I are making the most of a weekend of Autumn sun by heading to the coast. Five national parks spread along the eastern part of Tasmania including Freycinet National Park, one of Tasmania’s oldest national parks, which sits on a peninsula joined to the mainland by twin sandspits. The promontory was surveyed in 1802 by French Captain Nicolas Baudin and was named after his lieutenant, Louis-Claude de Saulces de Freycinet. Driving into the park in the early evening down a winding, tree‑lined road, we catch glimpses of The Hazards, the pink granite mountains glowing in the last of the day’s light. By the time we pull into Freycinet Lodge, the sky has darkened to indigo, a line of yellow along the horizon signalling the sun’s farewell.
Freycinet Lodge is a bit of an institution, sitting in a prime location within the national park. It’s been around for decades, yet it’s not aged, keeping pace with contemporary design, yet sensitive to the natural environment as it nestles in native bushland. There’s something for everyone here, with accommodation ranging from One Room Cabins to Mountain Terrace rooms with spectacular mountain views, to Premier Spa Cabins. The Coastal Pavilions are the latest additions to the collection and they are spectacular. Designed by Liminal Architecture, inspiration for the pavilions was drawn from the forms of the nearby bays and coastal granite rock formations. The interiors are wrapped in Tasmanian timbers – Tasmanian oak, Blackwood joinery and the only plywood to be manufactured locally. The exterior shell is made of durable hardwood that is charred, ensuring the pavilions are visually discreet, melting into the landscape. Hammock-like balustrades provide a novel opportunity for relaxing while immersed in the setting. And what a setting it is. On one side of the resort, Richardsons Beach stretches towards Coles Bay, the small settlement here, where sailing boats bob on the light swell. This is a beach to stroll on, where oyster shells are washed up by the tide. On the other side of the resort is Honeymoon Bay, a horseshoe‑shaped pebble and sand beach, fringed with eucalyptus forest and nestled between two rocky headlands, with impressive views of The Hazards. One of the major drawcards of the location, though, is Wineglass Bay, widely considered one of the top ten beaches in the world and the most photographed view in the entirety of the state. This is no easy beach to access though. First, there’s a 1.3-kilometre upwards hike on a beautifully constructed track through coastal woodland, past striking granite boulders, to the lookout. There are enough steep patches and stairs to give your legs a ➤➤

good workout – and the lookout is only the halfway point. The views, however, are refreshing, well worth the effort, and, if you’re lucky, you’ll see a wallaby or two lazily grazing by the path. The beach itself is down the other side. Before you descend, though, it’s wise to remember that the way in is also the way out, unless you’re willing to take a longer alternative to return. If hiking is not your thing, comparable views can be enjoyed on a Wineglass Bay Cruise. If you want to feel the sand between your toes, the other option is Freycinet Aqua Taxi managed by Freycinet Adventures, which runs drop off and walk out or drop off and collect services to several beaches, including Wineglass Bay. One way or another, Wineglass Bay is a sight to behold. A smaller walk that is sometimes overlooked, yet offers maximum reward for minimum effort, is the easy stroll to Cape Tourville, marked by an unmanned, automatic lighthouse. The lighthouse is inconsequential – it’s the panoramic views of Carp Bay that provide the wow factor. Sleepy Bay, just along the road, is another low‑effort, high‑reward walk, a forest-fringed path descending to a beautiful rocky bay with turquoise waters and orange lichen-coated rocks. With eyes tired from gazing at so much beauty, we spend our evenings at Freycinet Lodge, sipping on local brews from the complimentary minibar and dining at the Lodge’s restaurants, The Bay Restaurant for fine dining and Richardsons Bistro for more casual meals, popping to The Hazards Bar and Lounge for a post-dinner digestif. The seafood is so fresh, the oysters in particular so plump and luscious, that we are inspired to stop at the Freycinet Marine Farm on the day of our departure. A weekend idyll at Freycinet Lodge is not soon forgotten. As the sign on Richardsons Beach recommends, we “take only memories and leave only footprints”. Moving home the right way Moving house requires a lot of organisation and planning and it can also be an emotional experience. Fine & Country Property Staging reveals top tips for a smooth move.

oving into a new property can be an exciting time, especially if it’s your dream home. For some, though, moving house is prompted by bad news, such as a bereavement or financial woes, making the process stressful, to say the least. Fine & Country Property Staging has helped move a large number of clients in different situations across the country, and we can advise on how to make your move as stress-free and efficient as possible. We know there can be hiccups with moving dates and significant delays – that is why planning early is key. Source a reliable removal firm Sourcing a reliable removal firm should be one of the early ‘to do’ tasks on your list. It is important that you find a company that has the right-sized vehicles to accommodate the number of items you are moving. Find out if there is any additional help they may be able to offer, too. For example, some firms will help remove headboards from the walls or remove curtain poles. This can be a big help in the long run. Start packing early If your removal firm is not packing your boxes, it’s best to get started early. Equip yourself with a permanent marker, plenty of packing tape, and lots of packing materials, such as bubble wrap and newspaper. Boxes can be sourced from a number of places – Amazon has a good selection at reasonable prices. We recommend using double-walled boxes as they are stronger, so more likely to hold a heavier weight and weather a bit of wear and tear.
Don’t forget the garden It is amazing how many items you can accumulate in your garden over the years, such as plant pots, furniture and ornaments, all of which need to be packed. It’s worth moving the items you plan on taking with you into one section of the garden, so it is clear what’s staying and what’s going. This is a great opportunity to clear out any things you no longer need. We know sheds and garages can be a great place for harbouring clutter. Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree and eBay are an easy way to list and sell old items that you don’t need in your new home. Pack an essentials box Clearly label a separate box and fill it with everything you need for the first few days in your new home. This can include valuables, phones, chargers and television remotes. If you have children, think about schoolbooks and their school uniform, as it can be a hassle if these things are difficult to find. If you have pets, make sure pet food is not too far away. Remember to pack the kettle last. Moving house is thirsty work and you’ll be ready for a cuppa when you move in. The key here is starting early. Even before you have an exchange date, you can begin sorting through your belongings, whether by room or by usefulness.
