To call this house a large chalet-style bungalow would be technically correct and yet would almost undoubtedly conjure up the wrong impression. To call it an exemplary, high quality, contemporary, extensive, family home would be far more accurate. In the village of Ashwicken, five miles east of King’s Lynn, down a quiet private road, it was the plot that struck the owners as a perfect place to build a home. “We loved the garden - still do - it’s quiet, enclosed, and beautiful,” says the owner. “Between us we have four children and there is certainly more than enough space here for all of us.” Almost an understatement as rooms are exceptionally large and there are many of them!

No Expense Spared There had been a small bungalow on the site where the owners had the property built, after buying the plot in 2013. It is quite plain to see that no expense has been spared throughout the house, and everything is presented in immaculate order. The double glazed windows are in a light grey, the garage doors and front door are in cedar, whilst the internal doors are in oak. The entrance is from the gravelled front drive under the eaves of the low, swooping, slate rooves: a solid cedar front door which opens into a spacious hallway, contemporary staircase climbing up to a galleried landing with views to the hall below, and, directly ahead, a large rustic-style timber sliding door which reveals a wide opening into the extraordinary modern living areas inside. Underfoot is a patchwork of porcelain tiles in muted greys, the design repeated in another downstairs hallway. A big walk-in coat and boot room opens off the hall.

Symphony of Light and Space The kitchen/dining area is a superb open-plan expanse with the culinary end under a double-height sloping ceiling with Velux windows, and bi-fold glass doors opening onto the terrace outside with its splendid oak pergola, a perfect space for alfresco dining. Bespoke, high quality units are designed to the owner’s specification and finish; a large, L-shaped island painted in Little Greene’s ‘Marine Blue’ with pale quartz worktop takes centre stage and incorporates two stainless steel sinks with a Carron Phoenix hot water tap, an induction hob and an extractor which rises up from the worktop, still allowing plenty of space for the breakfast bar. Tall units are fitted along the walls, in Little Greene’s ‘Lead’ colour, providing much storage with one section containing the eye-level ovens and grill. There is an integrated dishwasher, fridge, freezer and wine cooler under the worktops.

In the middle of the room, visually dividing the kitchen area from the living and formal dining space, is a load-bearing section of wall which cleverly features a double-sided, state-of-the-art fire. “The bio-fuel fire in the middle of the kitchen makes a nice feature of the central pillar; you just pour in the liquid and light it,” enthuses the owner. “We are also including in the sale, the hand-blown Italian glass chandelier which hangs over the island.” The owners have set out a comfy seating area here facing the fire on one side and overlooking the garden and terrace through a big window. Beyond this there is ample space for a big dining table, and leading off here through double doors within a shelved wall, is one of the many reception rooms.

The Drama Continues This dramatic, vaulted room has an impressive chimney breast, leading up to the apex of the roof, with a tall stone fireplace housing a Charnwood log-burner in their ‘pewter’ finish. Flanking the chimney breast are massive, floor to ceiling trapezoid windows, whilst adjacent French doors lead onto the terrace. “The reception room at the back is our Christmas Room!” states the owner. “We always have a ten foot Christmas tree in here and it looks amazing. The extremely long, made to measure curtains in here will be staying.” Another reception room is the one at the front of the house; this has a pair of windows over the west facing drive, and is still an excellent size at over twenty-one feet long. Decorated in deep blues with Cole & Son wallpaper on a feature wall this has a very different mood to the rest of the house. The decoration of the property is all top quality with the use of expensive papers and paints. “We have used ninety per cent designer wallpapers such as Casamance, Osborne & Little, Linwood in the master bedroom, Matthew Williamson in the grey and yellow bedroom, and Cole & Son in the navy sitting room,” divulges the owner. “Paint colours are mainly from the Farrow & Ball palette.”

Yet another large reception room, also overlooking the front, opens off the back of the kitchen which makes an ideal playroom for their young children.

There is also a study to the side of the house, and a utility room next door which has double doors into a spacious laundry area. The downstairs, apart from the hallways, has timber floorboard-effect porcelain tiles stretching over the entire area which has underfloor heating.

Possible Annex Off one end of the kitchen, a door opens into a stylish hall with fitted lockers and hooks for hanging above, with access to a downstairs lavatory. The hall leads to a room the owners have set out as a gym but, equally, would make an excellent bedsit for an elderly family member (or indeed a young adult), with its French doors opening onto the terrace, and with its own bathroom which includes a shower.

Striking Views from the Landing Moving up the modern staircase, solid plastered sides, oak underfoot, you find yourself on a striking galleried landing with views not only over the hall on one side and over the verdant garden on the other but also down to the kitchen below. The upstairs is about as impressive as the downstairs with a huge master suite in the eaves of the roof with its large private bathroom reached through walk-in dressing room areas either side. The stunning, triple aspect bathroom features a round window in the gable end, surrounded by mirror, under which is a beautiful French vanity unit with two round basins set into a granite top. At one end of the room sits a free-standing, slipper bath, at the other is a large shower.

The family bathroom at the far end of the house is not dissimilar, and is equally beautifully appointed. This serves three bedrooms, all double-sized and in the eaves, whilst the second bedroom, at over twenty-one feet long, benefits its own en suite which has a shower.

Green Green Grass of Home The garden is a wonderful space that was the main feature that attracted the owners to the spot in the first place. “It’s a sunny, mature garden with a massive willow tree in the middle, as well as surrounding oak trees,” declares the owner. “It’s very private and totally secure with a new six foot fence all the way round; it is low maintenance as it’s mostly trees, shrubs and grass – ideal for young children. We have some lovely rhododendrons in pinks and purples down one side which hide a large dog-run, and there is a big greenhouse in good condition. There was a huge veg patch too!

“A timber shed stands near to the house which is part workshop and part storage space, and at the bottom of the garden is a log cabin which accommodates an ‘Endless’ Infinity Training Pool, which can stay if required, and a wood-burner which can help heat the pool. We also installed night vision CCTV cameras. And we have horses from a livery stables grazing on the other side of the fence, which is nice. It is the garden that I will definitely miss the most!”

Ashwicken is located approximately 41 miles west of Norwich and 5 miles east of King’s Lynn. King’s Lynn offers a wide variety of schools and cultural and leisure facilities, plus doctors’ surgeries, Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and a main line railway station with links to London King’s Cross taking 1 hour and 45 minutes. The historic city of Norwich brags all the local amenities you would expect of a county capital including a main line station to London Liverpool Street and an expanding airport to the north side of the city with national and international flights.
