Kier Construction Construction: Hospital, NHS Scratched doors, chipped sinks, dented IPS panels, damaged sanitaryware

Southampton General Hospital, Southampton

The Challenge Two of the highly skilled Finishers employed by Plastic Surgeon have been involved in carrying out a series of snagging repairs in the latter stages of construction for a new wing to Southampton General Hospital. The two men from the specialist’s Southern Region team spent a total of five days under the direction of main contractor, Kier Southern: making good scratches, dents and other minor damage to doors, toilet cubicles and sanitaryware. Thus enabling the project to be handed over on schedule; whilst also saving money and avoiding significant amounts of material being sent to landfill.

The Solution In addition to using a wax compound to repair some of the wood-grain doors, other fittings were filled and rubbed down prior to the Finisher completing colour matched repairs. The IPS panels in the washrooms were also successfully remediated, while possibly the most important repair featured in one of the new theatre scrub rooms. There a large rectangular ceramic sink had an unsightly chip out of one of its upper surfaces. Facing a replacement cost of £800 plus labour, Kier’s site manager asked Plastic Surgeon to take a look at the possibility of saving it. In fact the damage was filled and coated in less than two hours, before the Finisher moved on to respray a number of white enamel surfaced medical units.

The Result The Quantity Surveyor on the project for Kier Southern, Stuart Exall, states: “As often happens on such projects, all of the doors were delivered at the same time and had to be stored, then moved about the unit. This inevitably results in some minor damage which we decided to ask Plastic Surgeon to deal with. The repairs had to be done quickly and saved a number of items, including a large ceramic sink, from being replaced.”

Sustainable Repairs At the same time as providing clients with a comprehensive cosmetic repair service addressing virtually every type of product and substrate, Plastic Surgeon is also addressing important aspects of the sustainability agenda. For while the company’s ethos of ‘repairing rather than replacing’ represents a saving of approximately Full UK £3 for every pound spent, this approach also Coverage significantly reduces waste going to landfill and therefore helps cut a customer’s carbon footprint.
