The national cosmetic repair specialist, Plastic Surgeon, has been involved in some delicate work within a new medical research facility located in the centre of Glasgow: repairing minor areas of damage but potentially saving the client huge expense and disruption due to components coming from abroad on a long lead time. The work at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital was carried out inside laboratories and refrigeration rooms, on behalf of Food Processing Engineering, a sub-contractor working on the fit-out contract with a very tight timetable. A team of three Finishers from Plastic Surgeon spent a total of seven days carrying out what the company refers to as cosmetic repairs – filling areas of damage with proprietary two-part fillers and rubbing the surface back smooth, before colour matching the original finish.

Plastic Surgeon’s Regional Manager for Scotland, Derek Whiteford recounts: “These were mainly very large panels so it was important that we were able to achieve a very good colour match and effectively ‘feather out’ the cosmetic repairs, otherwise spraying the whole of them would have taken a lot more time. “These panels were integral to areas such as the chilled refrigeration rooms in the laboratories, and down in the mortuary, and replacing them would have been a difficult process; especially as they would have had to come from abroad. If we had not been able to repair them, it would have been hugely expensive to have replaced them, and could have even held up the handover.”

Sustainable Repairs At the same time as providing clients with a comprehensive cosmetic repair service addressing virtually every type of product and substrate, Plastic Surgeon is also addressing important aspects of the sustainability agenda. For while the company’s ethos of ‘repairing rather than replacing’ represents a saving of approximately £3 for every pound spent, this approach also significantly reduces waste going to landfill and therefore helps cut a customer’s carbon footprint. Uniquely, Plastic Surgeon has developed its VisibilITy software which translates each Finisher’s job report, sent from their hand held computer, into the equivalent weight and other statistics on a data base that participating customers can utilise for their own sustainability reporting.
