3 Sometimes I wonder what to talk about on our intro page, and as most of you know its usually a grumble or a rant about something. So this month I am going to give you a little humour and then a grumble. Humour first. I had this text from Lucy my partner in crime ( this little mag) She tells me about the doctors appointment she had with Dr Ruby ( My 3 year old granddaughter). “I have a poorly wrist Dr Ruby” She said You will need a wheelchair for that and have to push the wheels around. “But I cant push my wheels I have a poorly wrist” Don’t worry your mum will push you! She then proceeded to check Lucy’s temperature and it was 7 metres high, and then she checked the mouth and said “brush your teeth or they will all fall out”.

   

Now the rant...I help in a dog pound when I am in Cyprus, yesterday this unpleasant big fat bloke rocks up in a Mercedes at the pound with 4 tiny puppies 8 weeks old, 2 are his 2 from a neighbour, he says you take them or I shall dump them or shoot them! You cannot communicate with him, he is beyond shame and has no compassion at all. His dog should be removed from him, or at least spay the dog, but no that will cost money. But we can afford to drive a brand new Mercedes! No point going to the police they will do nothing, everyone seems to be related. Who knows what’s in store for the rest of the litter. I Wonder what his kids are like, what sort of example is this moron as a father. Oh well I shall be back in Blighty in a couple of weeks, can’t wait to enjoy the smell of Autumn leaves and munch my granddaughter. Lizzie

Green Park in Bilston, Penn Fields, Penn Hall, Tettenhall Wood and Wightwick Hall will all benefit from the proceeds. He will also be available to look at items brought along by the audience. Doors will open from 6.30pm when guests attending can bring along articles, preferably ceramic or glass which are his speciality, from which Will will choose examples to be included in part two of the evening as part of an illustrated talk. KATY CARTER is set to share her slimming secrets in CASTLECROFT A slimmer who transformed her life by losing over three stones is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Katy has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire and members at the Castlecroft group are getting ready to welcome Katy as their new Consultant when she takes over the group on Tuesday 4th September 2018. Katy says ‘when I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 3 stone and going on to have a healthy pregnancy and my daughter, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to their target weight’. “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost 3 stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own Consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight. Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun.”

ways get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. It was sustainable throughout pregnancy, my journey into motherhood and beyond.” Katy’s Slimming World group will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, Windmill Lane, Castlecroft, WV3 8HJ every Tuesday at 7pm from 4th September 2018. IT’S A DOGS LIFE As our regular readers’ are aware. A couple of months ago, we found a box of 4 puppies in a field in Cyprus. We found homes for 2 and decided to keep two of them. So Doris and Lulu are now 6 month old juvenile delinquents, with never ending Zebedee legs, I think we have settled on them being German Short haired pointers, which would make sense because hunting is a national sport (I use that term loosely) They have the longest sexiest legs you have ever seen. Letting them off the lead however is a worry, pointers are ruled by their nose, and they are prone to wandering, one day my beauties will need to be able to enjoy total freedom when we walk, but maybe I shall get a couple of trackers first! I think I have told you all about the treatment of animals here in Cyprus, a shocking monologue of cruelty, the disregard for animals is almost embedded in the culture from teachings in school. Dogs have no soul they tell me. I have seen pets, kicked, brutally hit and beaten and there is no authority to go to. Police have little or no interest. I have seen cars “put their foot down” if there is a cat in the road eager to make a hit. Nothing however could have prepared me for the horrific circumstances I have found some animals to be in since I have started to help at the village pound. The council men were supposed to look after the dogs but they literally didn’t. I came across a genuinely lovely lady who single handed feeds, nurses rescues and rehomes the dogs in this pound, and dogs that the police call her with. In the past dogs were euthanized within 15 days, and would still be

if it was not for the work of this one lady. The dog pound consists of 3 open cages in a grotty corner of a builders yard, where the council workers taunt the dogs. Although it sounds pretty rough, these dogs are no longer in danger. We try to rehome them many in the UK. They are taken initially to the vet for tick treatment ( I have never seen tick infestations like them, ears full of them) fleas, and worms. Surgery is sometimes required. There are just the two of us mad ladies who do it for the dogs. I have popped

some pics on this page so that you can meet our current “boarders” and I will keep you posted on their futures. This is Thomas and Bruno. Thomas on the left is around 18 months old. When we found him on an old outbuilding he had been chained up, in the blazing sun with no cover, no water, no food, his neck was raw from the chain, his ears were a mass of ticks. He was thin and timid. Thomas is now a lovely solid little boy, with a gentle nature. He clearly has terrier in him, maybe a pocket pointer mix about knee height. He is not overly energetic and has started to chase a ball and bring it back, he has not been played with in his life so all this fun is new to him, his life has been the end of a chain neglected in a lonely field.

To advertise call 07974 180383 / 01902 690838 e mail finchmagazines@gmail.com

15 In complete contrast to Thomas we have Bruno on the right he just loves to play and will bring the ball back and drop it, he has excellent recall and would make a fun energetic dog for someone. Bruno is probably only 2 and he came to us in a very bedraggled state. Bruno has not been trained but we are working with him and already he is calmer, he just needs someone who loves long walks and some discipline. He was probably a gun dog at some point. This week we rescued Larry the jack russell, his thigh was full of lead shot, it was infected and nasty, Like I said hunting is a national sport. The vet thinks he is about 8 years old, and at some point has made a nice pet, maybe his owner died, and the family kicked him out, or they just had a new dog. Today Larry is well and clean and tidy, for now the vet is keeping him because we have no room, but we are actively looking to rehome him. We also have Blue the staffy and Moll the chow, who has been hobbling on a stump of a foot because her paw was broken a long time ago. shall keep you up to date with their stories and my dog days in the dog pound. I have opened a go fund me page if you want to donate the cost of a cuppa. Lizzie https://www.gofundme.com/pound-dogs

PENN AND DISTRICT GARDENING SOCIETY ANNUAL SHOW I’m a little late writing up on this one but the event was right on our deadline for print. Better late than never though and what a success the show was this year, there were plenty of visitors (the committee were rushed off their feet) and you could see the effort that went into the competition entrie. My daughters favourite entries were the gardens children made on paper plates. If you haven’t been before – it’s a lovely afternoon out with the kids so they can look at all the entries from knitting to painting to baking to growing the biggest juiciest marrow you have ever seen! Then of course you can finish with a cuppa and a huge slice of cake. Yum! My hanging baskets didn’t get entered this year, I still have a lot to learn! There were some fabulous entries this year. Big hats off to the committee and their hard work to make the show an enjoyable afternoon for all. The nominated charity this year is The Stroke Association. Lucy

Maximising potential in your child If your aim is to improve your child's knowledge base in a particular field, all education in this subject will useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. Your child will have the advantage of a whole teacher to themselves with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for them. It seems impossible to doubt the benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with around thirty pupils, each with different abilities, yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. The teacher will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is absorbing and interpreting the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In the class environment it is all to easy for a child to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them . It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Compared to the conflicts of the classroom, fraught with distractions and intimidations from other pupils, the relaxed environment of tutor and student can be a safe haven. And more importantly a tutor can focus on areas that the pupil is finding difficult to comprehend.

FINCHFIELD READERS’ GROUP Sweet Caress By William Boyd This is the story of Amory Clay, born in 1908 into a semiaristocratic family: her father Beverley, a failed novelist and writer of short stories, is on the brink of collapse after serving in the first World War. She has a younger sister Peggy, who becomes a famous musician and re-invents herself as Dido Clay, and a younger brother Xan, who writes poetry and is killed when a pilot in the second World War. Her father tries to kill both Amory and himself by driving the car into a lake. They survive from drowning but thereafter, Amory never fully believes in the trustworthiness of the men she loves; and they all fail or disappoint her in some way. Amory develops a teen-age crush on her dashing uncle, Greville Reade-Hill, who himself a society photographer, introduces her to the magical world of developing and printing photos and gives her a present of a camera. She is fascinated by the idea of seizing a moment in time and immortalizing the scene or person with the camera and surprises her family and teachers by resolving to become a professional photographer. Greville initially aids her into society photography, which leads onto the Berlin demimonde, pre-war America, Blackshirts riots in London, second World War in Europe and the Vietnam War. Her life time experiences mirror the history of the 20th. Century. We do get the impression that being a photogra-

pher involves a lot of waiting around, eating out making contacts and filling the time with cigarettes, alcohol and sex. After failing to set up a sexual encounter with uncle Grenville, she turns to his apprentice Lockwood for her first experiences, then falls in love with Cleveland Finzi, an American married to a rich crippled wife, who wants her as his lover on the side; then with a French widower living in New York, with whom she has intellectual conversations about his writings, but she is let down when he marries another woman; and lastly with Sholto Farr, a Scottish Lord, with whom she has twin daughters, Annie and Blythe. Sholto has experienced horrific killings in occupied France and gradullay seals his own doom with excessive alcohol. She has one last affair with john Obercamp in Vietnam The dialogue, characters and description of events are so vivid that you expect Amory to be a real live person –but the whole story is a complete fiction. The photographs are randomly selected from the author’s wide collection but do not relate to the characters in the story and are of poor quality, so do not enhance the novel. The title “Sweet Caress” is chosen to stand for all those ‘serendipity’ moments in life when happenings work out just right. A good read. Anita Bayley This novel had very mixed reviews and opinions from he readers group, I think it had the longest and most in depth discussion the group has had for a very long time. Next month we will review – The Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez

‘lock-snapping’ has emerged as a preferred form of burglary. Armed with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver intruders can now force their way into people’s homes in less than a minute using this technique. And unlike other crude methods of entry smashing windows and breaking down doors, this is done with stealth and is almost completely silent. As a result thieves are targeting more homes at night – while people are still in bed. It takes a matter of minutes. So what exactly is lock-snapping? The first bit of bad news is that the ideal targets are Euro profile cylinder locks, which are fitted to several million uPVC doors throughout the country. It works by removing the plastic covering and gripping the protruding lock mechanism – where you put the key – with some sort of tool. The answer is an anti-snap lock, speak to a locksmith they will give you the best advice.

BUGS AND FRIENDS NEWS Summer may soon be coming to an end but plans for next year are already under way. The Dutch garden which has looked particularly spectacular this summer will once again be planted in the late autumn by the Bantock User Group to provide the usual display of tulips, wallflowers and primulas for next spring. These plants are funded by The Friends of Bantock, and we hope, funds allowing, to replant a whole bed in the Rose Garden. Within the museum we are providing outline drawings of items found in the house for colouring in by children visiting the upstairs nursery, and in due course mounting a display of photographs of the park, taken over several years by two local amateur photographers. This will be in the newly available extension to the cafe which will give direct access from the house. It is planned that other local groups will make use of this facility to put on exhibitions of their work. If you wish to join the Friends and support us in our efforts to enhance the experience of all visitors, annual individual membership is £10, £15 per for more information email: bantockfriends@virginmedia.com or Tel: secretary 01902 331272 If you have a few spare hours a month and are interested in volunteering with BUGs please call Val 01902 342715 or Roger 01902 341930 Lost your Clock or Park View us online www.tettenhallclock.co.uk

34 TETTENHALL AMATEUR PLAYERS—HOLIDAY SNAP!!!!! What a fabulous summer we have had! Eager to hang on to the last vestiges of the warm weather we have opted to put on ‘Holiday Snap’, a classic farce by Michael Pertwee and John Chapman! The play is set in a timeshare villa in Portugal and things start to go wrong when two adulterous couples turn up for the same week’s booking! Add a myopic and inebriated company rep in the guise of Commander Chittenden to the mix, and you have the perfect ingredients for a perfect farce! What could possibly go wrong?! The premise is old-fashioned good fun-fare and one that you can safely bring your granny or children to watch! Written by Michael Pertwee, brother of Jon Pertwee (of ‘Dr Who’ fame) and John Chapman an accomplished and successful exponent of post-war West End farce (whose first play was ‘Dry Rot’) ‘Holiday Snap’ promises to be a fast moving rollicking play! We are always keen to take on new talent and are delighted to be welcoming Wendy Hallez into the Group; she has not performed since leaving school and is looking forward to the challenge of reigniting her passion! We are pleased to announce that we will be performing this production at Perton Golf Club. The venue offers excellent parking and good access to the building. In addition they are offering a pre-show supper from 5:00pm. As there are limited tables it would be advisable to book in advance by either phoning Martin on 01902 380073 Ext 2 or by emailing martin@pertongolfclub.co.uk. If you wish to join or would like to find out further information please contact us by either emailing us at info@tettenhallamateurplayers.co.uk or by telephoning 01902 744033. Details of the society can be found on our website

www.tettenhallamateurplayers.com, Facebook and Twitter. ‘Holiday Snap’ will be performed from Tuesday, 6 November to Friday, 9 November at 7:30pm. There promises to be a high level of interest in this play and tickets will be available from the following sources from Monday, 10 September: LOCO, Tettenhall High Street, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, WV6 8QS BOOKING AGENT: TicketSource: Online:www.ticketsource.co.uk/ tettenhallamateurplayers Telephone: TicketSource: 03336663366 (Mon to Fri, 9am to 7pm & Sat & Sun 9am to 5pm) £1.50 telephone service fee applies.

Secga presents Hercule Poirot in Black Coffee by Agatha Christie To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Secga Theatre Company we have chosen a play which is something of a landmark in its own right. Black Coffee is the only play Agatha Christie wrote herself to feature her famous Belgian creation Hercule Poirot. The play was written by Christie in 1929 in reaction to Michael Morton’s stage adaptation of her celebrated 1926 Poirot novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Retitled Alibi, Agatha was unimpressed by both the adaptation and the portrayal of Poirot, and promptly created her own stage play Black Coffee to redress the balance. And we are very glad that she did! Black Coffee contains all the ingredients of the traditional British whodunit wrapped up in Agatha Christie’s unique and fiendishly clever style. Sir Claud Amory has invited family, friends and associates to dine at his country house. Following dinner he announces that his new formula for a powerful explosive has been stolen from the study safe and that he knows the thief is currently present in the room. The external doors and windows have been locked and the lights will soon be turned out for thirty seconds. If the formula is returned in that time the matter will be closed. If it is not then the theft will be put into the hands of Hercule Poirot who is already on his way from London. Inevitably when the lights come back on the formula is still missing, and Sir Claud is dead – poisoned by his after dinner cup of black coffee. It is no longer mere theft that Poirot must investigate, but murder! Aided by his trusty colleague Captain Hastings,

and with additional investigatory assistance from Scotland Yard’s finest Inspector Japp, Poirot must exercise his little grey cells to the limit to determine which of the motley group of suspects is the guilty party – before they have chance to strike again! Black Coffee will be performed by Secga Theatre Company at The Towers Theatre, Tettenhall College, Wood Road, Tettenhall WV6 8QX, from Thursday 25th until Saturday 27th October. The curtain rises on the mystery at 7.30 each evening, the doors opening at 7pm. Refreshments are available before the show begins and during the interval, and include alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, coffee and tea. (We don’t advise black coffee though!) Tickets are £8.00 each and can be bought at the door on the night or from Cupcake Lane Tea Room (situated at the old Tettenhall Railway Station, WV6 8XN). Tickets can be bought online through Ticketsource (ticketsource.co.uk/secga-theatre-company) or reserved in advance by phoning 01902 337908 or 0776 627 7039, by emailing secgatheatre@hotmail.co.uk or through Secga’s website at secgatheatrecompany.vpweb.co.uk Whether you love a good whodunit or just want an evening of wonderful escapist entertainment, Black Coffee (like a good cup of cappuccino) hits all the spots. And it’s also a marvellous way to celebrate Secga Theatre Company’s fiftieth anniversary into the bargain! See advert on facing page.

The Narcissistic Family The mythological character of Narcissus epitomizes the concept of destructive selflove. The story of Narcissus and Echo is of self-love that precludes the ability to see, hear, or react to the needs of another. This stands as a poignant allegory for the interactive relationships of the narcissistic family. In a narcissistic family the responsibility for meeting emotional needs becomes skewedinstead of resting with the parents the responsibility shifts to the child. The child become inappropriately responsible for meeting parental needs and in so doing are deprived of a supportive caretaker and robbed of opportunities for experimentation and growth. Children raised in narcissistic families learn early that that their primary job is to meet parental needs. Their own feelings, in which they tend not to develop trust, can be a source of discomfort: it is better not to have feelings at all than feelings that cannot be expressed or validated. Thus, rather than acting on their own feelings in a proactive way, the child waits to see what others need and then reacts to those expectations – whether the child’s response is positive or negative their elected response is invariably reactive to the needs of others not their own. All children become a reflection of parental expectations -the concept of mirroring personality development is an established tenet of psychology. Frequently in the narcissistic family however, the mirror may reflect the child’s inability to meet parental needs. The reflection then interpreted by the child is one of inadequacy and a failure on their

part. A child of a narcissistic family often finds intimate adult relationships problematical because their barriers to trust remain intact. The original source of their emotional distance in relationships often remains obscured and helping them often involves turning the clock back for inspection.
