Welcome to our “Flaming June” editions.

I think we have been sold a pup with that expression. But we can live in hope that the weather forecasts will have that warm red hue indicating that it is going to be “scorchio”. I know that not everyone likes the sun and heat, but without doubt the blue sky brings a smile to any face. What better than an early Spring morning listening to the birdsong and enjoying that first cup of tea with that smell of early Spring in the air.

On the subject of Spring, it is traditionally a good time to fling open the windows, let the fresh air in and have a good clean and tidy. If you are anything like me it’s a job you start with gusto and after a while wish you given it a miss. Perhaps Spring clean doesn’t always apply to the house, it could be the garden, or even yourself with a haircut or pedicure.

HOW TO MAKE A SUMMER HANGING BASKET

Are you one of those people who buy their Summer hanging baskets?, and you now have a fine collection of empty wire baskets in your shed. Why not this year for a change try making your own, they are fun and give much more satisfaction knowing that they are your own creation.

You will need

A wire basket

Compost

Sphagnum moss

Summer bedding plants

A watering can with a rose attachment

Slow release granular fertiliser

Water retaining crystals.

Step 2. Line the basket

Step 1. Prepare the compost and moss. Mix your compost with the slow release granular fertiliser and water retaining crystals. This will nourish your plants and give them a better chance of survival. With your moss soak it in a bucket of water for an hour or so before planting.

Place your basket on a pot to keep it steady and line the bottom with a layer of moss, make sure it is quite thick and wring out any excess water before you start. Place plants to trail protruding from the sides of the basket. Continue to line the basket with a second ring of moss on top of the plants, leaving the centre clear, fill the centre with your compost , up to the top of your moss ring.

Step 3. Repeat the process of lining and filling, placing the plants in alternate holes to that of the pervious layer to ensure that you have an attractive pattern. Make sure the roots come in contact with the soil in the basket. With your top ring of moss wrap it round the rim of the basket to get a nice finish.

Step 4.

Planting.

If you have used the water retaining crystals they will expand dramatically, so before filling the top of the basket leave the basket for a couple of hours giving them time to expand, you can then remove the excess soil. You can then continue to fill the top of your basket. Water your basket well, and keep it well watered throughout the summer.

This book is based on an Englishman called Peter, who is told on his 16th birthday, that the man who raised him is not his father, his natural father is a man from East Germany, who his mother met on a fishing trip in 1960, at the time when Germany was a divided country. Peter studies to become a Doctor, moves to West Germany in the hope he can find out more about his natural father. In the last year of his training he visits East Germany with a student theatrical group, and while there falls in love with a girl whose “nick name” is Snowleg, she is desperate to leave East Germany and asks Peter to help her escape to the West, Peter tells her he will, but at a grand function, which Snowleg is not invited to, she “gate crashes” the function and tells everyone that she is with Peter, Peter becomes afraid of being caught up in the political aspect and all the problems this will cause him and denies knowing Snowleg.

On his return to West Germany, Peter spends decades in denial that he ever loved her and also guilt as to what might have happened to her, at the same time still trying to find out who his father is or what is his true name. Eventually Germany re-unites, Peter decides to return to where Snowleg lived and sets about the impossible task of trying to find her, at the same time still trying to find more information about his father.

Peter discovers that his father was a political activist, was arrested, then shot dead while trying to escape over the “Berlin Wall”. Peter, does find “Snowleg” and her daughter but at first fails to recognise her.

The last part of this book deals with the politics of

German underground, spies, double crossing and shady character dealings, which Peter has to navigate in order to find Snowleg.

The back cover of this book describes Snowleg “as a powerful love story,” but I found the “powerful love story” very dreary and pretty non existent, after all, waiting 20 years before setting off to try and locate the love of your life doesn’t seem very passionate at all.

Our group thought Peter wasn’t a particularly nice person. He turned his back on his parents, humiliated and betrayed Snowleg, and seemed almost in denial throughout the book. He never seemed a person who was ever happy or content. The majority of the group did not particularly enjoy this book, it seemed very broken and disjointed, jumping between different scenes.

Friends of Bantock and BUGs News

What can tell us that summer has arrived better than roses? Popular with so many visitors, the rose garden is an ideal spot to sit on a bench and admire them.

Sadly this year some of the beds surrounded by box hedging have not done well. We have, as advised, cut the struggling ones down somewhat to await new growth so it’s is a matter of waiting to see if they are able to regain vigour. We do wonder if last year’s drought had taken its toll on them. We irrigated as and when we could but more volunteers would be very welcome to help us in this. See below for details of joining our BUG’s team.

The Dutch Garden will of course as the season progresses provide its usual colourful display which is annually planted by the City Council, while in the Courtyard the planters funded by The Friends and planted by our BUGs, will do likewise. Of course without money raised from annual membership subscriptions and at fundraising events, together with time given by volunteers, we could not do the work we do.
