I was looking through some photographs the other day and was surprised at how anorexic I looked in them. I lined myself up in front of the mirror and looked from photograph to image and thought….. goodness me - I look old and slightly portly….. when did that happen?

I had to have a photograph taken for my new passport a couple of weeks ago and the assistant asked me to have a look at it on screen before she printed it off. I immediately told her that it can’t be me as this was a greying elderly gentleman. She looked at the screen and then back at me and said in all seriousness, but it is you. I smiled, gave a big sigh and said I know.

In my head I’m still that lithe fit young man so when I catch a glimpse of myself in some reflection on a window or in the mirror it comes as quite a shock to see this old geezer looking back at me.

My only consolation is that God does not look at our outer appearance, he sees us from within. And when I think about that I see how wonderful a gift it is to be able not to judge people by what they look like; but to see the beautiful person they truly are. My wife, Wendy, has just said over my shoulder she does that every day when she wakes up next to me! Ahhh.

We are all beautiful people to God, how about we try to see everybody we meet in future through God’s eyes.

Joke Spot Little Johnny told the Church Selection Committee, "If I am selected as Vicar of this church, I will work hard to bring us into the 20th century." Someone spoke up, "Uh, Vicar, don't you mean the 21st century?" Little Johnny replied, " Let's take it one century at a time."

MAGPIE CENTRE NEWS Craft and Country Fair is a Runaway Success Perfect weather, great atmosphere, a classic vehicle parade and a succession of spectacular arena displays, topped off by a flypast of the iconic Lancaster bomber, made the second Magpie Centre Craft and Country Fair, at Wallington Hall, a huge success.

Organised by volunteers of West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association, this year’s Fair showed a massive increase in footfall from last year’s inaugural event resulting in a net profit of more than £5,000 for the Magpie Centre. Displays by Fen Falconry, the King’s Morris, Lowestoft Dog Agility Display Team and Busybodies Stage School Dance Performance Team entertained visitors, young and old, throughout the day.

Moving into autumn, highlight of the Magpie Centre’s calendar is the Quiz with Hog Roast (plus vegetarian option), scheduled for Saturday October 20 at a different venue this time: Watlington Village Hall, Church Road, Watlington, PE33 0HE. Doors open at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 start. There is a licensed bar, serving beer, wine, cider and soft drinks. Teams are usually from 4 to 8 people, but singles and couples are welcome to come and make up teams on the night.

Tickets, at £11 each, include the hog roast, plus a stunning array of salads and desserts: surely excellent value for a great evening out. Pre-booking is essential, so call 01553 672756 to secure your places.

Booking is also open for stallholders at our Art and Craft Fair, which will take place on Saturday November 17 at Stowbridge Village Hall, Downham Road, Stowbridge PE34 3PE. And lastly for this month, the hunt is on for a new Secretary. This would entail attending one evening meeting per month at the Magpie Centre. It would be preferable if whoever takes on this role would like to become a Trustee, but this is not essential.

HUNDREDS OF LOCALS OPPOSE PROPOSED SILICA SAND QUARRY. If you haven’t heard already. You will now. Carved into the beautiful landscape between Shouldham and Marham, running parallel to Spring Lane could become the destination for the LARGEST Silica Sand extraction Quarry in Norfolk (SIL 02). Making the quarry in Leziate look like a child’s sandpit.

Many of you, (including Marham and Shouldham Parish Councils) have sent comments and objection letters, concerned emails and various complaints to the Norfolk County Council and to MP’s. Below is a copy of a joint objection letter that hundreds of locals in Marham and Shouldham submitted, all in response to the Sibelco Silica Sand (SIL 02) extraction plans.

Meetings have happened and new meetings are planned (please see below for key dates). But there are still many, many questions that need answers. Which is why hundreds of locals in Marham and Shouldham have formed an independent action group to fight this proposed Quarry. The group is known as ‘CATSs’ standing for ‘ ‘Campaigners Against Two Silica Sites’ in Shouldham and Marham.

Yes folks. That’s right. There’s another site we need to protect. Because while all eyes will be on developments for the ‘ preferred ’ Sibelco site (SIL 02) we can not take our eyes off the other potential ‘Area of Search’ site that Sibelco are also interested in. Shouldham Warren is also under threat. Listed as one of the 41 sites on the ‘Proposed Mineral Extraction Sites’ document, it is imperative we not only object to Shouldham / Marham (SIL 02) site but also campaign to have the ‘Area of Search’ site in Shouldham Warren (AoS E) removed from the list, as campaigners so successfully achieved at a proposed silica site in Dersingham two years ago.

Key Facts - (SIL 02) preferred site Size: The 390.36 hectare site is within the parishes of Marham and Shouldham The estimated silica sand resource in the site is 16,000,000 tonnes The proposer of the site has given a potential start date of 2027 and estimated the extraction rate to be 800,000 to 900,000 tonnes per annum.

Based on this information the full mineral resource at the site could be extracted within 20 years. Therefore, 9,000,000 tonnes could be extracted within the plan period.

Marham Parish Council meeting will be held on Friday,12th October at 6:30pm Surgery with Miss Elizabeth Truss M P for South West Norfolk and Chief Secretary to the Treasury to discuss the proposed silica sand extraction plans.

Upcoming key decision dates 1. Norfolk County Council will publish the feedback on initial consultation towards the end of September 2018.

2. The Preferred Options Consultation starts in December 2018. This is a critical key date.

Then the Secretary of State approvals, after which Sibelco can apply for planning permission.

How can you help?

CATSs - We are the ‘Campaigners Against Two Silica Sites’ Shouldham and Marham.

OBJECTION LETTER WHICH WAS SENT FROM HUNDREDS OF LOCAL VILLAGERS Name: Address: 12 August 2018 Planning Services CES Norfolk County Council Martineau Lane Norwich, NR1 2SG Email: LDF@norfolk.gov.uk Dear Sirs RE: PROPOSED SITE SIL 02 AS A PREFERRED AREA FOR SILICA SAND EXTRACTION I wish to lodge my objection to the proposed site SIL 02 as a preferred area for silica sand extraction.

I understand the need to provide a future source of silica sand, however, I feel that this development will have a disproportionate and devastating impact on a rural community, already affected by a rapidly expanding RAF airbase of strategic national importance.

I would also like to note that the proposal put forward by Sibelco is an optimistic ‘best case scenario’ which downplays the negative impact on the residents’ wellbeing, our community, and the environment, especially considering the massive size of this site and time scales involved in the development.

I would also like to point out that the process has not adhered to the principles laid out in Norfolk County Council’s own ‘Statement of Community Involvement’.

Residents were completely unaware of these plans, they were not notified of the consultation and had only a few days to prepare a response ahead of the deadline.

In particular, my objection is based on the following grounds: Health/Safety & Environment  Unacceptable increase in Noise, Dust and Light pollution as a direct result of the proposed extraction is in violation of local residents’ rights as per European Convention on Human Rights, specifically Article 2 (right to life), given health concerns about silica dust and links to silicosis and 14

HUNDREDS OF LOCALS OPPOSE PROPOSED SILICA SAND QUARRY. respiratory diseases, Article 8 (respect for one’s private and family life, home and correspondence), and Protocol 1 (right to peaceful enjoyment of your property), considering the ‘excessive thousands of individual residents.  Prolonged exposure to silica dust present significant risk to vulnerable members of the community, particularly the elderly and young, given the village demographics  No information has been provided regarding the impact of mineral extraction on local water supply/quality  No restriction on site working hours is proposed  This is the only proposal within Norfolk M&WLP that is in a high-risk flood area. Flood risks are further exacerbated by the removal of ancient drainage ditches Economic  No proposed economic benefit for the villages of Marham or Shouldham  No additional job creation  Reduction in house values  Potential impact on home insurance due to increased flood risk  Reduction in tourism and visitors to the Nar Valley Way  Creation of ‘trapped’ residents unable to move due to the inevitable slowing of the housing market Local Infrastructure  Existing road infrastructure is unsuitable for HGV and plant access.

Precedence has been established by RAF Marham who are prohibited from using village roads for access purposes.  Local trunk roads will be negatively affected by increased traffic (A47 & A10) No proposal for Sibelco’s preferred option for above ground pipeline between proposed site and their current site at Leziate taking into account natural and transport barriers

Ecology Destruction of habitat of endangered wildlife species including: Voles, Newts, scarce Emerald Damselfly, Moths including the Grizzled Skipper, Dingy Skipper  Birds – conservation priority red list: Skylark, Lapwing, House Sparrow, Linnet, Yellowhammer, Song Thrush, Grey Wagtail, Tree Pipit, Nightjar, Woodlark, Grey Partridge  Dust deposition relating to the River Nar – a designated SSSI and a Core River valley  No proposal as to how the Core River Valley will be enhanced following mineral extraction  Detrimental impacts on ecology and biodiversity on nearby Country Wildlife Sites No restoration plan proposed for the entire site, which suggests there is no intention to remedy the harm caused, fears exacerbated by the very poor and dangerous condition of other Sibelco sites, such as Bawsey and Leziate  

Landscape • Marham village enjoys an elevated position relative to the proposed site, with beautiful long- reaching views across the fen landscape 1. Bunds or screening will be ineffective and intrusive in their own right 2. Proposed works will be visually detrimental and out of character with the local landscape Prevailing North and North West winds will aggravate noise and dust pollution concerns and impact on health

 Irreplaceable loss of agricultural land Destruction of ancient footpaths and relocation of rights of way (further than the stipulated 100m permitted) contained both within and adjacent to the proposed site, which are extensively used by local residents, schools and tourists Detrimental impact on the open nature of the landscape and to the setting of the scheduled monument Pentney Priory Gatehouse and other heritage assets No assurances have been received regarding the possibility of the site being used for Landfill in the future 16

Archaeology  This area is potentially very rich in archaeological finds, from Pre-Historic to Roman to Medieval and any undiscovered sites would be destroyed permanently by the project Close proximity to Pentney Priory Gatehouse and the unexplored Cistercian Nunnery in Marham In conclusion, nothing in this proposal addresses residents’ concerns about the devastating impact the development will have on our community, quality of life, health and wellbeing for decades to come. No assurances have been given that the site will not be abandoned as industrial wasteland with zero potential for either leisure or ecological benefit.

SHOULDHAM THORPE NEWS

Fincham WI Fifteen members met in the Memorial Hall for the September meeting, Mrs C Dungay presiding.

This being Members' Night, the evening was organised by all the members, led by acting President, S Amies. She led the singing of “Jerusalem” and thanked the committee for all their hard work over the year. Each member of the committee was presented with a posy, created by W Bell. A birthday posy was presented to A Wiseman. Mrs Amies showed members the pennant she has been decorating for next year's Centenary celebrations.

The evening's entertainment was provided by members of the Cherry Marham Handbell Ringers. They played a range of well – known tunes, including “Scarborough Fair”, “Greensleeves” and “The Skye Boat Song”. Everyone agreed that the bells had a lovely, sweet tone to them.

The refreshments – Afternoon Tea of sandwiches, scones, cakes and tea were provided and served by the members. They were delicious.

The raffle was organised by P Biggs and S Amies. Winners included J Fuller, W Bell, P Wakeling, P Biggs, W Baines, S Westwood, C Dungay, P Steel, C Stringer, S Williams and J Tidy, as well as several members of the bell ringing group.

At the end of the evening Sandra announced that £36 had been raised for WI funds. C Dungay thanked the members for organising such an enjoyable evening.

Harvest Festival at Shouldham Thorpe Our harvest festival was held on Sunday Sept 9th. The Rev William Burke took the service. It was his first visit to Shouldham Thorpe. The service well supported, although we hoped more people would come after we decided not to include communion in the service.

In spite of a difficult harvest with a shortage of water, the church still looked great. Our thanks to all those who helped. The windowsills, alter and font were covered with home grown fruit, vegetables and flowers; not a bought flower to be seen. Kate Addly's display around the fond was full of unusual produce including including zucchettta (Spanish courgette), borlotti beans with right red pods, little grape sized water melons called cuca melon, red broad beans, lots of herbs, peppers and a tea plant.

Our thanks to Gary Bainbridge and everyone who gave food gifts. Gary has taken it all to The Purfleet Trust in King's Lynn.

Refreshments were provided. Katie's home made sponge and fruit cake was delicious. Many thanks to her.

Now it's tidy up time before the mice arrive and find the wheat, acorns and other goodies left behind!

Memorial Hall Following the repairs to the flat roof and, hopefully, the soon to be repaired wall at the front of the hall, the committee has discussed various options for the next set of fundraising. It was decided that a new heating system was the top priority.

Members are looking at the costs of a new system, (probably electric heaters,) and applying for grants to help with these costs.

The next fundraiser will be a Murder Mystery event, to be held in the hall on Saturday 26th October. The monthly quizzes continue to be successful and the committee hope to organise a Kareoke night next year.

The hall is well used, for clubs, groups, parties and receptions and fundraising is essential in maintaining such an asset to the village.

MARHAM NEWS Marham Holy Trinity Church: Bingo afternoon in village hall: Our bingo held on the 16th of August was a great success thanks to everyone who came to support us it was a huge turnout.

Many thanks to all the people who donated bingo prizes and the raffle prizes. Babs and I would like to thank Casey for being our runner.

We raised a amazing £402. All the money raised goes to the Church apart from the hire of the hall. Thank you again from Babs and Norma.

RAF Marham Event: Tuesday 16 October at 2.30pm: This is to celebrate 100th Anniversary of the RAF and in particular Marham.

Ladybirds: Shouldham: The Ladybirds in Shouldham meet on the third Tuesday of every month.

Different topics/crafts/speakers/visits. We meet at 8pm usually in the Village Hall unless a different venue is specified for a special event. £4 for non Ladybird members - which includes refreshments. Interested in more information: please contact either Lorna or Sandra: Lorna: 01760 337089 or Sandra: Village Post Office: 01366 347789 The Ladybirds have been quite busy over the last year and just to give you an idea of what we do and what our intentions are ... here is a little list of some of the activities and charities that we have donated to: £500 Aspire Fincham(young adults) £200 Daisy Charity (equipment for local disabled child) £200 Shouldham events committee - which organise the various activities in the village i.e: Village Fun Day; bike ride; the Evening Do; pantomime etc Also a couple of small donations have been made to the Alzheimers Society, Hawk and Owl Trust and RSPB (in lieu of the recent speaker fees) Last but not least The Ladybirds donated a Seat to the village of Shouldham and is currently being much admired (on the corner of Lamson Lane and New Road).

So a huge thank you to all the villagers for all the home made cakes and support via the tea tent. Without your kindness these amazing and so worthwhile donations would not be possible.

Ladybirds: Tuesday 16 October : Kathy Hipperson is coming along to the Shouldham Village Hall (7:45pm) to entertain us and give a talk on "Norfolk Suffragettes". Kathy is a historical interpreter and interprets the history of a specific site, in a specific time, often as a specific historical character and this is done by Kathy in a dynamic, interesting and entertaining way. A well-chosen character can bring the history of a project alive through storytelling. Kathy also develops a character using educational learning objectives. Kathy has kindly agreed to come along to our Ladybirds' meeting to give an informative talk on Norfolk Suffragettes. This talk is open to all - non Ladybirds, partners and children as very educational. So please do come along .... Non-Ladybirds pay an entrance fee of £4:00 and this includes refreshments. Children under 16 free.

RECIPE PAGE TREATS FOR YOUR DOG…….

Banana Chips 12oz (350 g) whole wheat flour 3 fl oz (100 ml) skimmed milk 1 egg 1 pureed banana 1 tbsp. golden syrup   

 

Preheat the oven to 300F or 150C Mix all the ingredients into a dough Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch (1 cm) thickness and cut into small cubes Place the cubes onto a prepared baking sheet Bake for about 30 minutes

Vegetable Crackers 1 courgette 1 carrot 2 eggs 1 tbsp. sunflower oil 5oz (150g) whole wheat flower 1 - 2 tbsp. milk      

 

Preheat the oven to 345F or 175C Grate the courgette and carrot very finely Mix with the eggs and sunflower oil Knead in the flour Add enough milk to make an easy to shape dough Using a teaspoon, form the dough into little balls and place on a prepared baking sheet Bake for 20 - 25 minutes.

Turn off heat and allow crackers to dry in the oven

SHOULDHAM NEWS William Maxey Allen (concluded) – Bearing in mind the need for a proper school, John Porter's manuscript tells how, from 1865, Rev. Allen began to collect money; and by 1866 the building (now Chalk and Cheese) was completed at a cost of £600. The Mss. continues:“After the passing of the [State] Education Act in 1870, the late Sir Thomas Hare added an infants' room at a cost of £400.............(later) enabling Mr. Allen to build an extra classroom at a cost of £200 and the work was finished in 1897.”

Having also raised sufficient funds to build an adjacent schoolmaster's house, we learn that Rev. Allen obtained a grant from the Church Commissioners to build a new vicarage - aided also by the generosity of Sir Thomas Hare, with whom he obviously enjoyed excellent relations!

While the school's expansion clearly occupied much of this vicar's time, All Saints' church was undergoing a major restoration, Lady Hare laying the foundation stone of the new chancel in 1868. The original thatch was removed and the whole building re-roofed in slate. The entire restoration was completed in 1870.

The final part of the manuscript gives a glimpse into the character of the man himself, namely:- “Mr. Allen was always careful with his services, always punctual, never known to be late…….and very rarely entered a pulpit other than his own in which he spoke very simply and to the point, not always pleasing his congregation…….He was elected Guardian of the Parish and a great many improvements took place in the lot of the poor. He was very popular amongst the people and died with them on August 4th 1906, leaving behind an enduring monument in the shape of a lovely Vicarage and a very popular school. RIP”.

After all these social innovations, it is easy to see why the parishioners erected a stained glass window to his memory, depicting the Good Samaritan, for all that William M. Allen had unselfishly done for Shouldham.

All Saints’ Church Armistice Exhibition Tim Peers has been researching the names of the Shouldham men who are commemorated on the war memorial in the churchyard. He has assembled a considerable amount of information, as well as personal photographs and details of the village at the time of the First World War. To mark the Armistice of 1918, it is planned to hold an exhibition of these researches in church over the week-end of 10th - 11th November, ie: to correspond with Remembrance Day itself and the other events being held to mark the centenary of that terrible conflict's conclusion. Tim is particularly seeking information on the following names: Ivor Callaby; Charles Trundle; Stanley Preston and William Porter. If anyone can help, please contact Tim on 347232.

FINCHAM MEMORIAL HALL DIARY

Ladybirds: Shouldham: The Ladybirds in Shouldham meet on the third Tuesday of every month.

Different topics/crafts/speakers/visits. We meet at 8pm usually in the Village Hall unless a different venue is specified for a special event. £4 for non Ladybird members - which includes refreshments. Interested in more information: please contact either Lorna or Sandra: Lorna: 01760 337089 or Sandra: Village Post Office: 01366 347789 The Ladybirds have been quite busy over the last year and just to give you an idea of what we do and what our intentions are ... here is a little list of some of the activities and charities that we have donated to: £500 Aspire Fincham(young adults) £200 Daisy Charity (equipment for local disabled child) £200 Shouldham events committee - which organise the various activities in the village i.e: Village Fun Day; bike ride; the Evening Do; pantomime etc Also a couple of small donations have been made to the Alzheimers Society, Hawk and Owl Trust and RSPB (in lieu of the recent speaker fees) Last but not least The Ladybirds donated a Seat to the village of Shouldham and is currently being much admired (on the corner of Lamson Lane and New Road).

So a huge thank you to all the villagers for all the home made cakes and support via the tea tent. Without your kindness these amazing and so worthwhile donations would not be possible.

Kathy is a historical interpreter and interprets the history of a specific site, in a specific time, often as a specific historical character and this is done by Kathy in a dynamic, interesting and entertaining way. A well-chosen character can bring the history of a project alive through storytelling. Kathy also develops a character using educational learning objectives. Kathy has kindly agreed to come along to our Ladybirds' meeting to give an informative talk on Norfolk Suffragettes. This talk is open to all - non Ladybirds, partners and children as very educational. So please do come along .... Non-Ladybirds pay an entrance fee of £4:00 and this includes refreshments. Children under 16 free.

SHOULDHAM THORPE NEWS

Fincham WI Fifteen members met in the Memorial Hall for the September meeting, Mrs C Dungay presiding.

This being Members' Night, the evening was organised by all the members, led by acting President, S Amies. She led the singing of “Jerusalem” and thanked the committee for all their hard work over the year. Each member of the committee was presented with a posy, created by W Bell. A birthday posy was presented to A Wiseman. Mrs Amies showed members the pennant she has been decorating for next year's Centenary celebrations.

The evening's entertainment was provided by members of the Cherry Marham Handbell Ringers. They played a range of well – known tunes, including “Scarborough Fair”, “Greensleeves” and “The Skye Boat Song”. Everyone agreed that the bells had a lovely, sweet tone to them.

The refreshments – Afternoon Tea of sandwiches, scones, cakes and tea were provided and served by the members. They were delicious.

The raffle was organised by P Biggs and S Amies. Winners included J Fuller, W Bell, P Wakeling, P Biggs, W Baines, S Westwood, C Dungay, P Steel, C Stringer, S Williams and J Tidy, as well as several members of the bell ringing group.

At the end of the evening Sandra announced that £36 had been raised for WI funds. C Dungay thanked the members for organising such an enjoyable evening.

Harvest Festival at Shouldham Thorpe Our harvest festival was held on Sunday Sept 9th. The Rev William Burke took the service. It was his first visit to Shouldham Thorpe. The service well supported, although we hoped more people would come after we decided not to include communion in the service.

In spite of a difficult harvest with a shortage of water, the church still looked great. Our thanks to all those who helped. The windowsills, alter and font were covered with home grown fruit, vegetables and flowers; not a bought flower to be seen. Kate Addly's display around the fond was full of unusual produce including including zucchettta (Spanish courgette), borlotti beans with right red pods, little grape sized water melons called cuca melon, red broad beans, lots of herbs, peppers and a tea plant.

Our thanks to Gary Bainbridge and everyone who gave food gifts. Gary has taken it all to The Purfleet Trust in King's Lynn.

Refreshments were provided. Katie's home made sponge and fruit cake was delicious. Many thanks to her.

Now it's tidy up time before the mice arrive and find the wheat, acorns and other goodies left behind!

Memorial Hall Following the repairs to the flat roof and, hopefully, the soon to be repaired wall at the front of the hall, the committee has discussed various options for the next set of fundraising. It was decided that a new heating system was the top priority.

Members are looking at the costs of a new system, (probably electric heaters,) and applying for grants to help with these costs.

The next fundraiser will be a Murder Mystery event, to be held in the hall on Saturday 26th October. The monthly quizzes continue to be successful and the committee hope to organise a Kareoke night next year.

The hall is well used, for clubs, groups, parties and receptions and fundraising is essential in maintaining such an asset to the village.

MARHAM NEWS Marham Holy Trinity Church: Bingo afternoon in village hall: Our bingo held on the 16th of August was a great success thanks to everyone who came to support us it was a huge turnout.

Many thanks to all the people who donated bingo prizes and the raffle prizes. Babs and I would like to thank Casey for being our runner.

We raised a amazing £402. All the money raised goes to the Church apart from the hire of the hall. Thank you again from Babs and Norma.

No assurances have been given that the site will not be abandoned as industrial wasteland with zero potential for either leisure or ecological benefit.

Ecology Destruction of habitat of endangered wildlife species including: Voles, Newts, scarce Emerald Damselfly, Moths including the Grizzled Skipper, Dingy Skipper  Birds – conservation priority red list: Skylark, Lapwing, House Sparrow, Linnet, Yellowhammer, Song Thrush, Grey Wagtail, Tree Pipit, Nightjar, Woodlark, Grey Partridge  Dust deposition relating to the River Nar – a designated SSSI and a Core River valley  No proposal as to how the Core River Valley will be enhanced following mineral extraction  Detrimental impacts on ecology and biodiversity on nearby Country Wildlife Sites No restoration plan proposed for the entire site, which suggests there is no intention to remedy the harm caused, fears exacerbated by the very poor and dangerous condition of other Sibelco sites, such as Bawsey and Leziate  

Landscape • Marham village enjoys an elevated position relative to the proposed site, with beautiful long- reaching views across the fen landscape 1. Bunds or screening will be ineffective and intrusive in their own right 2. OBJECTION LETTER WHICH WAS SENT FROM HUNDREDS OF LOCAL VILLAGERS Name: Address: 12 August 2018 Planning Services CES Norfolk County Council Martineau Lane Norwich, NR1 2SG Email: LDF@norfolk.gov.uk Dear Sirs RE: PROPOSED SITE SIL 02 AS A PREFERRED AREA FOR SILICA SAND EXTRACTION I wish to lodge my objection to the proposed site SIL 02 as a preferred area for silica sand extraction.

I understand the need to provide a future source of silica sand, however, I feel that this development will have a disproportionate and devastating impact on a rural community, already affected by a rapidly expanding RAF airbase of strategic national importance.

I would also like to note that the proposal put forward by Sibelco is an optimistic ‘best case scenario’ which downplays the negative impact on the residents’ wellbeing, our community, and the environment, especially considering the massive size of this site and time scales involved in the development.

I would also like to point out that the process has not adhered to the principles laid out in Norfolk County Council’s own ‘Statement of Community Involvement’.

Residents were completely unaware of these plans, they were not notified of the consultation and had only a few days to prepare a response ahead of the deadline.

In particular, my objection is based on the following grounds: Health/Safety & Environment  Unacceptable increase in Noise, Dust and Light pollution as a direct result of the proposed extraction is in violation of local residents’ rights as per European Convention on Human Rights, specifically Article 2 (right to life), given health concerns about silica dust and links to silicosis and 14

Marham Parish Council meeting will be held on Friday,12th October at 6:30pm Surgery with Miss Elizabeth Truss M P for South West Norfolk and Chief Secretary to the Treasury to discuss the proposed silica sand extraction plans.

Upcoming key decision dates 1. Norfolk County Council will publish the feedback on initial consultation towards the end of September 2018.

2. The Preferred Options Consultation starts in December 2018. This is a critical key date.

Then the Secretary of State approvals, after which Sibelco can apply for planning permission.

HUNDREDS OF LOCALS OPPOSE PROPOSED SILICA SAND QUARRY. If you haven’t heard already. You will now. Carved into the beautiful landscape between Shouldham and Marham, running parallel to Spring Lane could become the destination for the LARGEST Silica Sand extraction Quarry in Norfolk (SIL 02). Making the quarry in Leziate look like a child’s sandpit.

Many of you, (including Marham and Shouldham Parish Councils) have sent comments and objection letters, concerned emails and various complaints to the Norfolk County Council and to MP’s. Below is a copy of a joint objection letter that hundreds of locals in Marham and Shouldham submitted, all in response to the Sibelco Silica Sand (SIL 02) extraction plans.

Meetings have happened and new meetings are planned (please see below for key dates). But there are still many, many questions that need answers. Which is why hundreds of locals in Marham and Shouldham have formed an independent action group to fight this proposed Quarry. The group is known as ‘CATSs’ standing for ‘ ‘Campaigners Against Two Silica Sites’ in Shouldham and Marham.

Yes folks. That’s right. There’s another site we need to protect. Because while all eyes will be on developments for the ‘ preferred ’ Sibelco site (SIL 02) we can not take our eyes off the other potential ‘Area of Search’ site that Sibelco are also interested in. Shouldham Warren is also under threat. Listed as one of the 41 sites on the ‘Proposed Mineral Extraction Sites’ document, it is imperative we not only object to Shouldham / Marham (SIL 02) site but also campaign to have the ‘Area of Search’ site in Shouldham Warren (AoS E) removed from the list, as campaigners so successfully achieved at a proposed silica site in Dersingham two years ago.

Key Facts - (SIL 02) preferred site Size: The 390.36 hectare site is within the parishes of Marham and Shouldham The estimated silica sand resource in the site is 16,000,000 tonnes The proposer of the site has given a potential start date of 2027 and estimated the extraction rate to be 800,000 to 900,000 tonnes per annum.

Based on this information the full mineral resource at the site could be extracted within 20 years. Therefore, 9,000,000 tonnes could be extracted within the plan period.

MAGPIE CENTRE NEWS Craft and Country Fair is a Runaway Success Perfect weather, great atmosphere, a classic vehicle parade and a succession of spectacular arena displays, topped off by a flypast of the iconic Lancaster bomber, made the second Magpie Centre Craft and Country Fair, at Wallington Hall, a huge success.

Organised by volunteers of West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association, this year’s Fair showed a massive increase in footfall from last year’s inaugural event resulting in a net profit of more than £5,000 for the Magpie Centre. Displays by Fen Falconry, the King’s Morris, Lowestoft Dog Agility Display Team and Busybodies Stage School Dance Performance Team entertained visitors, young and old, throughout the day.

Moving into autumn, highlight of the Magpie Centre’s calendar is the Quiz with Hog Roast (plus vegetarian option), scheduled for Saturday October 20 at a different venue this time: Watlington Village Hall, Church Road, Watlington, PE33 0HE. Doors open at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 start. There is a licensed bar, serving beer, wine, cider and soft drinks. Teams are usually from 4 to 8 people, but singles and couples are welcome to come and make up teams on the night.

Tickets, at £11 each, include the hog roast, plus a stunning array of salads and desserts: surely excellent value for a great evening out. Pre-booking is essential, so call 01553 672756 to secure your places.

Booking is also open for stallholders at our Art and Craft Fair, which will take place on Saturday November 17 at Stowbridge Village Hall, Downham Road, Stowbridge PE34 3PE. And lastly for this month, the hunt is on for a new Secretary. This would entail attending one evening meeting per month at the Magpie Centre. It would be preferable if whoever takes on this role would like to become a Trustee, but this is not essential.

I was looking through some photographs the other day and was surprised at how anorexic I looked in them. I lined myself up in front of the mirror and looked from photograph to image and thought….. goodness me - I look old and slightly portly….. when did that happen?

I had to have a photograph taken for my new passport a couple of weeks ago and the assistant asked me to have a look at it on screen before she printed it off. I immediately told her that it can’t be me as this was a greying elderly gentleman. She looked at the screen and then back at me and said in all seriousness, but it is you. I smiled, gave a big sigh and said I know.

In my head I’m still that lithe fit young man so when I catch a glimpse of myself in some reflection on a window or in the mirror it comes as quite a shock to see this old geezer looking back at me.

My only consolation is that God does not look at our outer appearance, he sees us from within. And when I think about that I see how wonderful a gift it is to be able not to judge people by what they look like; but to see the beautiful person they truly are. My wife, Wendy, has just said over my shoulder she does that every day when she wakes up next to me! Ahhh.

We are all beautiful people to God, how about we try to see everybody we meet in future through God’s eyes.

Joke Spot Little Johnny told the Church Selection Committee, "If I am selected as Vicar of this church, I will work hard to bring us into the 20th century." Someone spoke up, "Uh, Vicar, don't you mean the 21st century?" Little Johnny replied, " Let's take it one century at a time."

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional.
