Cuatro hermanos y hermanas de 5 a 14 años cometieron suicidio colectivo bebiendo pesticida. ¿Qué pudo llevar a los niños a tal acto de desesperación? En 2015, poco después del horrible suceso, Rong Guang Rong viajó a la aldea donde ocurrió la tragedia con la esperanza de encontrar una respuesta a esta pregunta.
Four brothers and sisters, aged five to fourteen, collectively committed suicide by drinking pesticide: what could drive children to such an act of desperation? In 2015, shortly after this horrific event, Rong Guang Rong travelled to the village where the drama took place in the hope of finding an answer to this question.
No son muchas las veces que podemos encontrar películas que se adentren en el universo infantil con la originalidad que brinda el debut cinematográfico de Rong Guang Rong, cineasta y poeta chino que viajó por los pueblos de la China profunda para intentar hallar una respuesta imposible: ¿Qué lleva a cuatro hermanos pequeños a beber pesticida y terminar con sus vidas como ocurrió en uno de esos pueblos? ¿Cuáles son los miedos que acechan a los niños para que estos opten por el suicidio? Lo que podría ser el punto de partida de un documental malo y dramático sobre la realidad social se vuelve un doble viaje sincero e imaginativo. Por un lado, la historia personal del propio Guang Rong, también niño abandonado y con tendencias suicidas. Por otro, el aislamiento de las regiones en el interior de una China inaccesible y hermética. We don’t often find films that go deep into the universe of children as originally as it is done in the first film by Rong Guang Rong, a Chinese filmmaker and poet who travelled across the villages in the depths of rural China with the intention of finding an impossible answer: what takes four little siblings to drink pesticide and end their lives, as was the case in one of those villages? What fears creep up on children and lead them to opt for suicide? What may have been the premise of a bad and melodramatic documentary about social reality develops into a dual journey which is both honest and imaginative. On the one hand, there is the personal story of Guang Rong, also abandoned as a child and with suicidal tendencies. On the other hand, there is the isolation of the inland regions of an inaccessible and inscrutable China. Never have colourful, stuffed animals been so horrifying, nor has the bark of dogs in the distance been so daunting. Best Asian film in Rotterdam 2017. FERNANDO VÍLCHEZ
Axèle es fotógrafa, Camille, escritora. Las dos se van un año a una estancia en la Villa Medici de Roma. A Camille la acompaña su marido, un reputado escritor. Mientras que una extraña rivalidad se establece entre ellos dos, Camille se acerca a Axèle. ¿Pero quién es en realidad Axèle? ¿Una artista completa, sin límites, que se confunde con su obra? ¿O el mismo fantasma del lugar?
Axèle is a photographer, Camille is a writer. They meet when they are both awarded a year’s residency at the Villa Medici in Rome. Camille is accompanied by her husband, an acclaimed author. When their marriage becomes curiously competitive, Camille becomes close to Axèle. But who is Axèle really? A committed, uncompromising artist who identifies with her work? Or the ghost of the Villa?
Dos mujeres llegan a la Villa Medici de Roma para desarrollar una residencia artística. Camille es escritora y ve en esta estancia la oportunidad de retomar su trabajo después de un largo periodo de inactividad. Axéle, sin embargo, es una joven fotógrafa que apenas empieza. Mientras que Camille ha llegado a la Villa con su hija y su marido, un prestigioso escritor al que todos alaban y reconocen, Axéle hace gala de una libertad creativa y personal totalmente arrolladora. La sombra de un marido tan brillante como caprichoso, se vuelve en seguida demasiado asfixiante para Camille, que intuye que su plan de realización personal puede acabar en fracaso y ve aflorar una a una todas sus inseguridades y fobias. Las dos mujeres comienzan una intensa relación de amistad que servirá a Camille para encontrar la fuerza interior que parecía perdida. Two women arrive at Villa Medici in Rome to enjoy an artistic residency. Camille is a writer and sees the opportunity to write again in this stay after a long period of inactivity. However, Axéle is a young and inexperienced photographer. While Camille arrives at the Villa with her daughter and her husband, a well-regarded writer everyone praises and recognizes, Axéle shows off a creative, personal and completely overwhelming freedom. The shadow of a brilliant and fussy husband quickly becomes suffocating for Camille, who suspects her personal fulfillment plan can end up a failure and watches each one of her insecurities and fears bloom. The two women start a strong friendship, which will serve Camille to find the inner strength she thought was lost. Reality, dreams and fiction mix up in the debut of the French filmmaker Caroline Deruas, who displays and unusual, formal and emotional maturity in her first movie.NURIA CUBAS
RONG GUANG RONG (China, 1984) es un artista y cineasta independiente establecido en Beijing. En 2011 fundó con su mujer, la artista y sinóloga Ambra Corinti, Zajia Lab, uno de los primeros espacios creativos independientes de Beijing. Además de Children Are Not Afraid… (2017), que tuvo una gran acogida en Rotterdam 2017, Rong ha realizado el film Nameless Soldiers in Search of Dreams (2014).
CAROLINE DERUAS (Francia, 1978) ha trabajado como ayudante de dirección, script y guionista en películas de directores como Yann Gonzalez, Romain Goupil, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi y Philippe Garrel, con el que coescribió varios films, entre ellos L’Ombre des femmes (2015). Sus cortometrajes se han mostrado en La Quincena de Realizadores de Cannes y el festival de Locarno. Daydreams es su primer largometraje.
