UPO FESTIVAL: A GROWING TRADITION

PAGES 5-6 ► Winnipeg's Filipino-Canadian community celebrated the third annual Manitoba Upo Festival on September 2, marking a significant increase in participation and festivities compared to previous years. The festival, which revolves around the harvest of bottle gourds (upo) grown in local backyards, drew in around 500 attendees. This year's event featured 50 impressive upo entries, competing for the titles of the longest and heaviest upo. It also showcased a variety of activities, including games, contests, and entertainment, with a martial arts demonstration. The festival's success was made possible by a dedicated team of volunteers and generous sponsors. It has become a cherished tradition in Winnipeg's Filipino community, promising even more excitement in the years to come. Photo by Noni Manalili

PBA Stars Shine Bright in Detroit: Triumphs and Near Misses at FBA Labor Day Tournament

Detroit, MI – The Philippine Basketball Association WPG Inc. (PBA) showcased their basketball prowess on the international stage, as six of their teams descended upon Detroit for the Filipino Basketball Association of North America Labor Day Basketball Tournament. In a stunning display of talent and grit, five out of six PBA teams made it to the Championship rounds, cementing their reputation as a force to be reckoned with. The Men's Open division witnessed an epic showdown between PBA and their fierce rivals from Toronto. After a fierce battle, PBA emerged victorious, with MVP honors shared by Jonar Huertas and Joseph Medrano. The entire team, including standout

players like JC Aaron, Tre Morcilla, Randel Viray, Kniel Sullera, Vince Munoz, and Harold Memita, displayed outstanding teamwork and skill. The Senior Division, led by MetroBaller Carl Eusebio, also left their mark, winning all their games in nail-biting matches. MVP accolades were once again shared, this time by Pol Limpahan and Rob Adelantar, as the seasoned veterans guided their team to success. In the Ladies Open division, PBA's Twin Tower sisters, Paige and Julia, stepped up admirably after losing Aina Ramos to injury. Although they narrowly missed the championship, their tenacity was clear, thanks in part to the leadership of Coach Arsenio.

The defending champions, Grandmaster, faced a formidable challenge from a younger and larger Toronto squad. Ronald Coching battled through those big guys and kept it close only to lose. Coach/ Manager Romy Munoz vowed to reclaim the championship trophy despite the loss. The 2006/2007 Boys division displayed unwavering determination, battling valiantly against the taller Chicago Team. Even with the injured Coching, they nearly secured victory. The imports challenged the PBA players, but they chose to go all Filipino line-up and almost won it all. Coach Arsenio and Marie were lauded for their dedication.

Randy Viray, Manny Aranez and Muriel Magsangkay

Lastly, the 6-foot Under team put on a stellar performance, with a 3-0 record before bowing out in the semi-final against the home team, Detroit. Despite the loss, the team earned praise for their exceptional play. Thanks to the coaching staff of Wendel Mozo and the Boyz. PBA extends its heartfelt gratitude to all volunteers, coaches, and players who represented Winnipeg with pride. Special thanks go to Major Sponsor Romy Munoz of Munoz Silkscreen Printing and Manager Riz Mapue for their unwavering support. The PBA's legacy of excellence in basketball continues to shine on the global stage, making Winnipeg proud.

2023 Manitoba Upo Festival By Leila Castro

I

t's that time of the year again when the community celebrates the abundant harvest of vegetable crops from the backyards. A harvest festival is a common celebration everywhere, but it is a big deal here in Winnipeg. Our city is in a Zone 3 Plant Hardiness Zone. Our city is also highly diverse, many immigrant communities, including the Filipino community, plant Asian vegetables in their backyards. Our very short outdoor gardening season can only support crops that can be harvested 60 to 90 days after transplant to the outdoor plant bed. Despite the very short outdoor gardening season, our close-knit Filipino community did it again in this third year of the Manitoba Upo Festival that was held on September 2nd. There were 50 upo (bottle gourd) entries that vied for the longest and heaviest upo contests. In the event’s first year in 2021, we received only 15 upo entry submissions. Last year, there were up to 25 entries. This year, the winner of the longest upo, Richard Mojado, entered the contest with an 8 feet bottle gourd and took home $1,000 cash and a trophy. Zacarias Cadiz, the winner of the heaviest upo, took home $1,000 and a trophy for his 15.6 kilos backyard grown bottle gourd. The blessings from the celebration did not end on that day, because days after that, Cadiz announced that he would be sharing with those interested in the community hundreds of seeds of the same plant from where he harvested the winning upo. Around 500 people came to participate in the games and contests and to enjoy the upbeat five-hour program. Young 204 volunteer nine-year-old Theo Arcega led

the opening prayer. 204 Volunteers Denny Nangan, Rodel Olesco, Elmer Aquino, and Tek De Leon fired up everyone in the Maples Community Centre hall while they sang the Filipino pride songs Noypi, Pinoy Ako, and Mga Kababayan. Young and energetic Ms. Pre-Teen Galaxy Canada Thea Aco and one of the pioneers of 204 Volunteers Inc.-Kids Edition Jade Castillo joined the roster of emcees. The demonstration of Filipino martial arts skills by the internationally multi-awarded Sikaran kids added more hype to the audience. The size of this year’s Upo Festival event is threefold compared to last year. Thanks to well-known and highly respected community leaders Nestor De Quiroz and Jonats Miguel who welcomed the collaboration opportunities, two significant segments were added to the Upo Festival. The De Quiroz’s led Inter-barangay VLeague (volleyball league) had assembled dozens of volleyball athletes for the volleyball game held at the gymnasiums of the Maples Collegiate. The Cavite Generals volleyball team was declared the league’s champion. Jonats Miguel who spearheads the famous PinoyCanada boodle fight events in major cities like Toronto and Calgary, brought the tradition to Winnipeg. Close to 200 boodle fight diners feasted on lechon, fried pompano, spring rolls, boiled eggplant and okra, and the different varieties of fruits donated by Groove Express Zumba group leader Rhiz Aco. The organizers reminded the participants about food safety before starting the dinner. Well-received event segments from the past year were held again this year. So much continued on page 6 ►

laughter filled the event hall during the presentation of the 60 entries to the funny vegetable contest. More than 30 talented kids participated in the acrylic painting workshop which was also a contest. Maestro Ferdz Manaco assisted the young artists in creating their paintings with the theme Sa Kabukiran (In the Farmland). Politicians graced the event with their presence and gladly participated in the wrapping of the spring rolls activity for the community cooking segment of the event. The food was cooked and served on time in the boodle fight dinner, thanks to the volunteers and long-time kitchen champions Estrella Acido, Anicia Reyes, and Yolanda Bullan. Year one and year two back-toback grand winner of longest upo, and one of the 2022 top 100 Fascinating Manitobans in Ace Burpee's list – Brix del Carmen, did not have an entry this year for said category. But he won the hearts of the people by doing fundraising during the event. Del Carmen raised $400 while the fund-raising raffle winner took home a bicycle with a sidecar. The fund raised was turned over to 204 Volunteers Inc. who will decide to which senior organization or program the money will be donated. There are many signs from the event this year that next year it will be way bigger and more exciting. Even the turnout of volunteers this year was phenomenal. Without at least 70 volunteers from various groups – 204 Volunteers Inc., 204 Filipino Forum and Marketplace, VLeague, and PinoyCanada, it will be impossible to support an action-packed event with simultaneous activities. Just the same, having enough resources is essential to pull through this kind of event. The Province of Manitoba Minister of Arts, Culture, and Sports approved the community celebrations grant for the event. Generous sponsors from the Filipino community also helped fund the event. What was put together was not a very big amount, but the admins of 204 Filipino Forum and Marketplace – Aleli Ferrer, Charry Mae Castillon, Kaiser Kathe Tormo,

and this writer made sure that every penny of the fund received was maximized for a wellexecuted quality event that benefitted many in the community. The upo entries were donated to FilCasa.

THE 43rd PROVINCIAL GENERAL ELECTION IS ON! Seven Filipino-Canadians are on the run for Manitoba Legislative Assembly plum role

October 3, 2023 is the deciding day of which party will govern the Province of Manitoba: Would it be a refreshing mandate for the ruling Progressive Conservative, the NDP, the official opposition party; or the Liberal Party?

Join our team! Kick off a rewarding career with the City of Winnipeg. The City is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse skilled workforce that is representative and reflective of the community we serve.

For more information, please visit winnipeg.ca/workinginrecreation

Each party and other fringe political parties are vowing Manitobans for their votes to elect the next provincial government. Notably, the upcoming election features a record-breaking presence of seven Filipino-Canadian candidates, a remarkable increase from the pioneering days of Filipino participation in provincial politics. Back in 1981, Conrad Santos, an NDP candidate for Burrows, and this writer, who ran as a Liberal for Ellice, made history as the first two Filipinos to venture into political waters. Santos emerged victorious, while I lost. Since those pioneering days, more kababayans have followed in our footsteps with some successfully winning seats and taking on ministerial roles. Notable among them are Flor Marcelino, an NDP representative for Logan, and the current incumbent, Jon Reyes, PC, Waverly, and Malaya Marcelino, NDP, Notre Dame, are both for re-election.

The other five candidates include Garry Alejo, Liberal, Burrows; Randell Cacayuran, Liberal, St. James; Jelynn Dela Cruz, NDP, Radisson; Kelly Legaspi, NDP, Tyndall. When asked by the Filipino Journal about her motivation for entering public office, Jelynn dela Cruz said that her inspiration to run for office came from her family who had encountered difficulty navigating the intricacies of living in Winnipeg due to the PC's drastic changes in health care and job opportunities. She expressed her vision for stronger representation in governing bodies and highlighted the NDP's commitment to public services, accessible training, and family reunification. "I’m young, experienced, and have a big heart. As the daughter of two Filipino immigrants, I have the values of hard work and bayanihan instilled in me," Dela Cruz said. Kelly Legaspi, an experienced nurse, stressed her unique perspective as both a healthcare provider and patient.

“I can be the strongest voice for our community to fight the health care cuts and support the health care needs of our community and support for health care workers.” She also vowed to improve social services to empower those in need. Legazpi who is also a Black Belt and Martial Arts Instructor, would like to build a stronger foundation for the youth for she believes that the youth of today are the future of this country. And to bring to the table of decisionmakers on the community diversity. In a telephone interview, Chris Santos said: "I strongly advocate addressing the needs of our seniors in Manitoba, the new immigrants, and improving the educational system." Through his passion and dedication, his commitment to serve the public by reshaping policies that will create a fair and prosperous future for the Tyndall Park constituents. Efforts to contact candidates Garry Alejo and Randell Cacayuran for comments were ongoing at the time of the press deadline for the Filipino Journal.

Ultimate New Wave Evolution (& closely related styles) part 45

I

n the previous part of this series, I featured the respective first albums of eight bands that emerged in the 2000s whose music has been commonly described as Indie Rock. While this term makes the style of these bands seem new during the era they started, the initiated knows that the sound is just an extension--if not, rebranding--of the previous decades' interrelated genres such as New Wave, Post-Punk, and Alternative Rock. Whatever the individual listener might prefer to genrify them with, the heart of these kinds of music beats the same melodic quality and resides in the same spectrum. Now, here is the follow up

Sa Úgoy ng Músika

record of each of the same groups from the last part. * Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002) ("Clocks") * Fine China - You Make Me Hate Music (2002) ("The Unsuccessful") * The Strokes - Room on Fire (2003) ("Reptilia") * The Libertines - Up the Bracket

(2002) ("Time for Heroes") * British Sea Power - Open Season (2005) ("Please Stand Up") * The Killers - Sam's Town (2006) ("Bones") * The Bravery - The Sun and the Moon (2007) ("Bad Sun") * Nightmare of You - Infomaniac (2009) ("I Think I'm Getting Older")

n a significant development, a Kuwaiti court has handed down a 15-year prison sentence to Turki Ayed Al-Azmi, the individual responsible for the heinous murder of Jullebee Ranara, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW). The case gained widespread attention as Ranara was brutally raped, murdered, and her body set on fire by her employer's son. The verdict was also followed by public outcry to reevaluate the deployment of Filipino migrant workers to Kuwait. Aside from the 15-year imprisonment for murder, AlAzmi was sentenced to another year for driving without a license. This ruling was confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on September 15. Jullebee Ranara's life was tragically cut short when her lifeless body, bearing signs of extreme violence, was discovered in the desert on January 21. Shockingly, an autopsy later revealed that she was pregnant at her death. The relatively lenient sentencing was attributed to Al-Azmi's status

as a minor. He can appeal the judgment within 30 days to the Court of First Instance. In its statement, the DFA expressed gratitude for the Kuwaiti authorities' efforts in expediting the case's resolution and ensuring justice for the victim. Moreover, the Department of Migrant Workers has indicated that recruitment agencies involved in Ranara's deployment would face charges, and the Philippines and Kuwait have reviewed their bilateral agreement in light of this tragic incident.

the Philippines, the country is exploring the possibility of importing rice from as far away as South America, particularly Argentina. Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Argentina’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Trade, and Worship, Santiago Andres Cafiero, discussed this potential importation during their recent meeting at Palacio San Martin in Buenos Aires. While a press statement confirmed their discussion about the Philippines importing rice from Argentina, no further details were provided. Thailand and Vietnam are the top two sources of rice imports in the Philippines,

respectively. Manalo's visit to Buenos Aires is historic, commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Argentina. A projection from the United States Department of Agriculture suggests that the Philippines may become the world's top rice importer in the marketing year 2023-2024, surpassing China, which is currently the top importer. This development has drawn criticism from groups like Bantay Bigas, who blame President Marcos's failure to support local rice production and food security initiatives. Despite upcoming domestic rice harvests, the Philippines continues to seek substantial rice imports, raising concerns about the future of the local agriculture industry.

Chito Miranda Defends Neri Naig Amid Meal Plan Controversy

M

Philstar.com/File

ANILA, Philippines — Chito Miranda has come to the defense of his wife, Neri Naig, amidst the controversy surrounding her PHP1,000 weekly meal plan. The singer-songwriter acknowledged a lack of information in Neri's initial post and called for understanding her intentions to help others with budget meal planning. Taking to Instagram on Friday morning, September 15, 2023, Chito appealed to focus on Neri's intention to assist in creating budget-friendly meals rather than criticize her efforts. Neri had devised the PHP1,000 weekly meal plan after her previous PHP2,000 meal plan gained popularity. Chito explained that due to her excitement, Neri should have explained how the PHP1,000 would suffice for the menu she shared. Chito's post included a screenshot of a netizen's comment, suggesting that the PHP1,000 weekly meal plan could work if one had a vegetable garden but might cost around "PHP1,500" if all vegetables were purchased from the market. Chito concluded his post by stating that Neri would make the meal plan more detailed for those who didn't fully understand her intentions. He also addressed those who criticized without understanding, emphasizing the need for empathy and understanding in a sometimes "cruel, cruel world."

The Cost of Philippine Democracy

H

istory is a compilation of stories linked together by decisions made by our ancestors. It reflects the consequences or impacts of these decisions. What we experience in our society is a reflection of the compounded decisions made by people around us, most especially people in power. This year, our organization will take you on a journey back to one of the darkest moments of our history. The Philippine Historical Society of Canada, Inc. (PHSCI) will host an interactive exhibit and performances on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) on 85 Israel Asper Way, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This event is the second installation of our “Balik-Tanaw Series” which started last September 23, 2022, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Martial law in the Philippines.

The “Balik-Tanaw: The Cost of Philippine Democracy” is a free public event that would take you on a retrospective journey of an important point of Philippine history. This exhibit will be open from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM. To end the night of retrospection, this year’s event would include a live musical performance from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., featuring Winnipeg’s finest local artists such as Rein Caballero, Jovelle Balani, Mervin Sison, and Johsa Manzanilla. The first step in correcting mistakes in the past is to understand how interconnected we are as a society. Once we see these personal links and how they affect us, we get to make better decisions. Once we as a collective become more aware of the cost of these major decisions made by people in power, then we will have the initiative to hold them accountable. As one of the co-founders and directors of PHSCI, I invite you to take the first step towards reconnecting with your roots and understanding our collective past. I hope that in doing so, we all unlearn and re-learn from our painful past, and collectively collaborate in protecting our history, democracy, and our future.
