PLAYOFF SEASON! WINNIPEG WHITE OUT IS

WHITEOUT WARRIORS:

Jets Take 2-0 Series Lead as Winnipeg Comes Alive

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets are flying high, not just on the ice but all across downtown as they soar to a 2-0 series lead over the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs — and the legendary Whiteout is back in full force.

In Game 2, it was Kyle Connor who once again stepped up, breaking a 1-1 tie just 1:43 into the third period with a sniper’s finish off a slick feed from Cole Perfetti. That goal sealed a gritty 2-1 win for the Jets in a game marked by tight-checking, limited space, and playoff-level intensity.

“We talked about our mentality going into tonight,” Connor said. “It was going to come down to who wanted it more.”

Connor’s Game 2 heroics followed a clutch goal in Game 1 with just 96 seconds left in regulation, part of a thrilling 5-3 comeback win. Add in Mark Scheifele’s leadership and Connor Hellebuyck’s timely saves — 21 in Game 2 alone — and this Jets team is showing shades of the 2018 squad that made a deep playoff run.

“You need your best players to be your best players,” said interim head coach Scott Arniel. “That’s what we’re seeing from Scheif and Connor.”

The atmosphere inside Canada Life Centre has been electric, but the party doesn’t stop at the doors. Outside, Winnipeg’s iconic Whiteout Street Parties have transformed downtown into a sea of white, thunderous cheers, and pure playoff joy.

Thousands of fans — decked out in wigs, face paint, and vintage Jets gear — have packed Donald Street and True North Square for every game. It's more than just a watch party. It's a movement.

The street parties, capped at 5,000 attendees per game, also give back to the community. Five dollars from each $10 ticket goes directly to United Way Winnipeg, supporting local efforts to combat homelessness, addiction, and hunger. Since 2018, over $312,000 has been

raised through these events.

With Game 3 shifting to St. Louis, the Jets know they’ve done their job at home — but the real challenge begins now.

“The games have been close,” Blues coach Jim Montgomery said. “Now it’s our turn to raise our level.”

Still, Winnipeg fans believe this is the year. And with a goalie like Hellebuyck, four lines firing, and an entire city behind them, who can blame them?

Game 3 is set for Thursday night. Whether you’re inside the arena, at the street party, or cheering from home — Winnipeg is all in.

How We Winter in Manitoba: A Day of Ice Fishing on Lake Winnipeg

When winter sticks around in Manitoba, we don’t complain — we lean in.

And what better way to embrace the season than to spend a full day out on the frozen expanse of Lake Winnipeg, bundled up, surrounded by good friends, and waiting for that big catch beneath the ice?

We recently joined the Castmasters - a group of adventurous Filipino anglers for a true Manitoban winter experience: ice fishing. For some of us, it was a first-time thrill. For others, it was a return to a beloved seasonal tradition. But for everyone — it was unforgettable.

The Set-Up: Cold Hands, Warm Hearts

Before sunrise, we packed up augers, bait, snacks, and layers (so many layers), and headed north. Once we arrived, it was all about drilling the holes, setting up tents and lines, and getting ready for a full day on the ice.

It was a beautiful, sunny winter day and spirits were high — because that’s the thing about ice fishing: it’s not just about catching fish. It’s about connecting — with nature, with community, and with that peaceful stillness you can only find in the heart of a Manitoba winter.

The Catch: Patience and Payoff

It didn’t take long before the first shout rang out: “Got one!”

Excitement echoed across the lake as one by one, fish were pulled up through the icy water. There were cheers, laughs, and a lot of photos (of course). We caught , and even a few big ones that got away — but that’s all part of the story.

From the Philippines to the Prairies

For many Filipino families new to Manitoba, ice fishing might feel like an extreme sport. But this day showed us that with the right gear, a sense of adventure, and some great company — it’s one of the most rewarding winter experiences out there.

As we shared food, stories, and laughs in our ice fishing shack, it felt like a perfect blend of Filipino warmth and Prairie resilience.

Watch the Full Adventure

We captured the entire day in a special video featuring a popular winter activity for many Manitobans. Watch it now on YouTube:

So yes — it’s still winter. And yes — we’re still loving it. This is how we winter in Manitoba.

Record-Breaking Advance Voter Turnout in 2025

Federal Election

Elections Canada has announced a significant surge in advance voter turnout for the current federal election, with an estimated 7.3 million Canadians casting their ballots over the four-day advance voting period.

Advance polls were open from Friday, April 18 to Monday, April 21, running daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The preliminary numbers show a 25% increase in advance voting compared to the 5.8 million

electors who voted early in the 2021 general election.

These figures, while still preliminary, signal growing enthusiasm and early engagement from voters across the country. A full breakdown by electoral district will be made available soon at elections.ca.

Whether driven by convenience, civic duty, or a desire to beat the crowds, Canadians are showing up — and voting early.

Pope Francis, First Latin American Pontiff, Dies at 88 on Easter Monday

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, following a stroke and subsequent heart failure. The Vatican confirmed his passing occurred at 7:35 a.m. local time (12:35 a.m. in Manitoba).

The beloved pontiff had made a public appearance just a day earlier, delivering his Easter message from a wheelchair in St. Peter’s Square before thousands of faithful.

His death comes after several health challenges in recent years, including a five-week hospitalization due to double pneumonia. Throughout it all, Pope Francis remained steadfast in his mission to lead with humility, compassion, and love for the marginalized.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Francis made history in 2013 when he became the first Pope from the Americas. His papacy was marked by a strong commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, climate

Two Filipino Dentists Perform in the All-Dentist Musical Chicago

Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé and Dr. Tom Colina will entertain audiences in a five-show All-Dentist Musical production of Chicago at Theatre Cercle Moliere from May 7th to May 11th. In this musical set in the 1920s, Dr. Tom Colina plays the jilted husband Amos Hart and performs in a number of song and dance numbers. Dr. Tricia is featured in two completely distinctive triple

threat roles as Mary Sunshine and Catrina Hupyak. Her first role is high soprano Mary Sunshine, a vibrant and much-admired reporter who speaks in a mid-Atlantic accent. Her second role is Catrina Hupyak, a wrongly-accused woman who is jailed for allegedly killing her husband. Originally written as a Hungarian role, Hupyak is now presented as a Filipina with a very edgy, emotional monologue

spoken in Tagalog. Dr. Tricia conceptualized and spearheaded the All-Dentist Musicals for the Manitoba Dental Association in 2010 and to this day this production company performs biennially. It has raised significant funds for theatre companies, Children’s Variety Telethon, Head and Neck Cancer patients and the Manitoba Dental Foundation.

action, and care for the poor.

In a statement early Monday, Cardinal Kevin Farrell wrote: “The Holy Father has returned to the home of the Father. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love—especially toward the poorest and most marginalized.”

The news of his passing has sparked global mourning among the Catholic faithful, including the more than 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide. Memorial services are being held around the world, with many Filipino communities—both in the Philippines and abroad—offering prayers and masses in his honour.

Locally, Filipino Catholics in Manitoba have begun to gather in churches and prayer groups to reflect on Pope Francis’ legacy. His message of inclusivity, mercy, and faith deeply resonated with many across generations and communities.

The Vatican is expected to announce funeral arrangements and details of the conclave to elect a successor in the coming days.

'Kabarangay' Kris Ontong Receives King Charles III Coronation Medal for Community Service

Prominent Filipino-Canadian community leader and Barangay Canada co-founder ‘Kabarangay’ Kris Ontong has been awarded the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal for Community Service. The honour was conferred upon Ontong and 35 other recipients in a formal ceremony held at Government House in Manitoba from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on February 18, 2025. The Honourable Anita Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba, alongside the Honourable Senator Flordeliz (Gigi) Osler, presented the medal.

The Coronation Medal commemorates the ascension of His Majesty King Charles III as King of Canada. It is bestowed upon individuals who have made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory,

region, or community. It also recognizes those whose outstanding achievements abroad bring credit to Canada.

Ontong, who immigrated to Canada in 2010, has long been a passionate advocate for newcomer engagement, multiculturalism, and public service. As the co-founder of Barangay Canada, an online media platform that amplifies issues affecting Filipino newcomers, he has helped bridge communities and encourage civic participation. His leadership roles with the Southeast Manitoba Filipino Association and the Prairie Centre for Excellence in Mentoring further highlight his commitment to fostering inclusivity and community development.

In a conversation after the ceremony, Ontong expressed deep gratitude for the recognition: “I am profoundly grateful to have

President Marcos Calls for Use of Technology to Improve Public Service

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged public servants on Thursday to use modern technology and innovations to serve the public.

Marcos said this in his speech after the ceremonial presentation of the signed Memorandum of Agreement on the Philippine Civil Service Digital Leadership Program in Malacañan Palace.

“It is an opportunity now for us to rethink, to innovate, and serve our people better through technology,” Marcos said.

been nominated by Senator Gigi Osler, to be considered deserving of the honour, and to be among such incredible, distinguished Canadians.

This recognition as an immigrant holds profound significance, especially at a time when rising anti-immigrant sentiment is being fueled by divisive and xenophobic rhetoric from beyond our borders. Now more than ever, we must demonstrate to our fellow Canadians that we stand together in addressing the challenges affecting our country.”

Ontong’s recognition underscores the invaluable contributions of immigrants in shaping Canada’s social fabric. As he continues to champion representation and civic engagement, his work remains a testament to the importance of inclusion and service in strengthening Canadian communities.

This month, the first group of participants, including 30 from the Civil Service Commission, finished their pilot training in Singapore. The program targets training at least 10,000 civil servants until 2027.

Faith in Action: Selkirk Hosts 36th Annual Public Way of the Cross

Selkirk, MB — On Good Friday, April 18, 2025, hundreds of faithful gathered at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Selkirk for the Archdiocese of Winnipeg’s 36th Annual Public Way of the Cross. The solemn event began at 9:30 a.m., inviting participants to walk together in prayer and reflection through the Stations of the Cross.

Organized by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry (OYYAM), the event brought together parishioners, youth groups, and families from across Manitoba to remember Christ’s final journey to Calvary. Young people played a central role, leading prayers and readings at each station — a powerful reminder of how faith continues to be passed on to new generations.

This year’s theme drew from Matthew 16:24:

“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” It served as a meaningful call to live with compassion, courage, and conviction, even amid life’s challenges.

The Public Way of the Cross offered a space for shared prayer, community witness, and spiritual renewal. For many in Selkirk and beyond, it was a moving way to mark the sacredness of Holy Week.

The Educators' Panel featured an esteemed lineup of speakers, including Ron Iscala, Ralph Abetria, Andrea Misner, Mary Jane Napolitano, and Renee Manacsa. These panelists generously
shared their expertise and experiences, leaving a lasting impact on attendees.
Links and certificates of attendance were provided to participants including those outside

MONTEMARIA: MOTHER OF ALL ASIA - Tower of Peace

Amust-see in the capital Batangas City of the Philippines' Batangas province of "ala eh" is the Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Centre, simply known as MONTEMARIA - the site of the Mother of all Asia - Tower of Peace, the tallest statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the world. With a height, equivalent to a 33-story building, of 98.15 metres or 322 feet measured from the ground up to the tip of the cross on top of her crown. It stands taller than New York Statue of Liberty and the Statue of Christ, the Redeemer, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Adapted from Pope Benedict XVI's 27 May 2017 prayer to Our Lady of Sheshan, Mother of the Church in China and All Asia and conceived as an international destination for devotees and pilgrims, the statue is symbolic of universal unity and peace for all people and countries all over the globe.

Montemaria is a legacy project of Batangas Governor Herminigildo (Dodo) Mandanas, owner of Abacore Capital Holdings, Inc. that donated the five-hectare land in Barangay Pagkilatan, Batangas City. Montemaria

was originally a project of Mary Mother of Poor Foundation of Roman Catholic priest Fr. Fernando Suarez where he could have a place to perform his faith healing work.

Construction of the Tower of Peace started in 2014 and was completed in 2021 with the grand opening ceremony held on 7 December 2021 just in time for the celebration of the 500th year of Christianization and globalization of the Philippines. Construction of the hands and face of the Blessed Virgin Mary was commissioned to renowned sculptor and national artist, the late Ed Castrillo, who started working on the project in 2008 and completed in 2010. The crown of Mama Mary has 12 stars representing the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ. The monument has 12 foundations representing the 12 tribes of Israel. To reach the crown you have to climb a total of 420 steps from the ground level unless you opt to use any of the three elevators inside the monument.

Within the grounds there are two chapels, the Sto. Nino the Prague Chapel and the Chapel of St. John Paul II.

There's also a souvenir shop where you can purchase rosaries, bracelets, keychains, books, and other related items. If you get hungry, grab some grubs here at the Cenacle Cafe.

The site is strategically located at the southernmost tip of the Batangas City accessible by concrete road and by sea from the Batangas international port. The Montemaria site is situated in a plateau like a sentinel overlooking the Verde Island Passage, referred to as the "Amazon of the Ocean" and the "Centre of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity of the world".

From the observation deck you could get an excellent view of the surrounding areas including the town of Tingloy, Verde Island, some parts of Oriental Mindoro,

and the opposite distant shores of the towns of Bauan and Mabini.

A Cultural Connection Close to Home | Help Us Build The Mabuhay District

As Philippine-Canadians, Manitoba feels like home in more ways than one. Many of us were born and raised here, growing up under prairie skies while carrying with us pieces of our ancestral heritage. For others, Manitoba may be a newer place to navigate, yet it’s still peppered with familiar faces, shared traditions, and an undeniable sense of belonging. We live, work, and play alongside our kababayan in a province that proudly displays a distinct Philippine flavour.

So, what exactly makes our community here so remarkable?

- Manitoba has the largest Philippine population per capita in Canada.

Roughly 7% of the province’s population identifies as PhilippineCanadian - and in Winnipeg, it’s 1 in every 10 people.

- Winnipeg is home to one of the oldest Philippine communities in the country, with migration dating back to the 1930s

- Tagalog is the most widely spoken non-official language in Manitoba, second only to English. These numbers tell a powerful story of growth, resilience, and cultural strength.

We have every reason to feel proud of our Philippine heritage here at home. But what excites me most is our community’s untapped potential and the legacy we’re only starting to build for future generations.

Let me introduce you to one vision of that legacy: the Mabuhay District

The Initial Spark

The seed for the Mabuhay District’s vision was planted in 2019 when a group of local community leaders came together and asked: What would it look like to have a permanent space dedicated to Philippine-Canadian culture? Something beyond a single weekend of celebration. Something everlasting.

We began to imagine a district that would serve as a reflection of our past, a celebration of our present, and an investment in our future. It would be a safe space to amplify our voices, showcase our talents, and foster collaboration across generations.

In June 2024, that idea officially took shape: Mabuhay District Inc. was born to establish a PhilippineCanadian cultural and economic hub in Winnipeg.

ABOUT MABUHAY DISTRICT

Established in June 2024, Mabuhay District Inc. aims to create a cultural and economic hub where Philippine-Canadians are empowered to thrive through collaboration and exploration. The Mabuhay District aspires to highlight Philippine-Canadian excellence in the areas of entertainment, housing, production, recreation, education, entrepreneurship and more. Mabuhay District Inc. relies on the unwavering support from our board, committees, volunteers, funders and broader community of supporters.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Now that the spark has been lit, we’re inviting you - leaders at the heart of our community - to help shape what happens next.

The Mabuhay District is proudly grassroots, volunteer-led, and memberdriven. This is why your voice matters. Whether you’re a student with big ideas, a business owner with insight, or a volunteer ready to roll up your sleeves - there’s a place for you here.

We’re currently collecting community feedback to help define what the Mabuhay District will become. What would you love to see in this space? We also invite you to participate in our upcoming engagement events, such as our community feedback sessions, membership launch, and Annual General Meeting.

We’re ready to listen, and we’re ready to build the Mabuhay District alongside you.
