First Shift: Growing Hockey with Diversity and Inclusion

n the 2022-23 Report to the Community, the Winnipeg Jets highlighted a promising initiative. Responding to the need for inclusive hockey development programs, especially for the Filipino, South Asian, and broader new immigrant communities, the 'hockey for all centre' launched the First Shift initiative. Powering this initiative is the Jets Hockey Development (JHD), in partnership with Scotiabank, Bauer and APNA Hockey - all sharing a mutual goal: erasing barriers and making hockey accessible for all of Canada's youth, especially those freshly forging their Canadian identities. One of the key attractions of this program? Free lessons coupled with complimentary equipment. This ensures that financial constraints don't deter passionate young players from pursuing their newfound love for the game even after the program ends.

This past spring, JHD took a bold leap forward with a six-week free program and several one-week summer camps. These sessions, which combined both on and off-ice training, witnessed over 130 Filipino and South Asian minor hockey players sweating it out, learning, and fostering relationships. A noteworthy aim behind these sessions was to identify and groom participants for coaching and mentoring roles, reinforcing the support structure of the First Shift program. In a fitting tribute to the diversity this program, during the Winnipeg Jets pre-season FanFest at Scotiabank hockey for all, Keewatin Prairie School's elementary Filipino Heritage program students performed two cultural performances on the main stage. n a historic turn, the Manitoba Legislative Elections on October 3, 2023, witnessed the New Democratic Party (NDP) securing a resounding victory, solidifying Wab Kinew's position as Manitoba's first First Nations premier. This triumph also granted the NDP a majority government. Addressing a jubilant crowd at the NDP campaign headquarters, Kinew expressed his gratitude for the win, emphasizing the importance of unity in the province. This election marks a significant milestone as Manitoba becomes the first Canadian province to elect a First Nations premier, underscoring

204VI Helping Fellow Grassroots Groups with Capacity Building

Founded six years ago, the non-profit group 204VI used to be called 204 Neighbourhood Watch Inc. Through

the years, it expanded and created more programs, one of which is the Capacity Building Program that helps fellow non-profit grassroots groups have the tools to start with or to expand their organization. In the past years, the groups that benefitted from 204VI’s Capacity Building Program were Wolseley Watch, St. James-Deerlodge Neighbourhood Watch, and the Aurora community at McPhillips. Last July, 204VI gave to the grassroots group St. James-Deerlodge Neighbourhood Watch and Outreach Patrol - King Edward and Bruce Park Chapter

The latest group that 204VI helped with capacity building was The Evelyn Memorial Search Team, a group of indigenous volunteers that perform the hard and complex work of searching for missing persons in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Darryl Cantois founded The Evelyn Memorial Search Team

five years ago. For years, Cantois has helped in searches for dozens of missing persons. In 2016, he found the lifeless body of Azraya Kokopenace during the search for the missing 14-year-old in Ontario. Cantois helped 204VI search for a missing Filipino Manitoban in 2018. In June of 2018, a search party was formed, standing in front of 200 volunteers inside PCCM at Keewatin, Cantois briefed the volunteers that doing the search is not easy and that you do not know what to expect. He added that it might be a decomposing dead body of a missing person that might be waiting for you, so you must be ready with what you will smell and see. On one chilly evening last

March, Cantois joined a dozen of 204VI volunteers and WPS to search for a missing 17-year-old girl. 204VI volunteer Beth Olesco found the missing girl. Last month, volunteers of 204VI met with Cantois to hand over to him the 20 black vests with the logo of The Evelyn Memorial Search Team. 204VI is hoping that Cantois’ wish will be fulfilled. Cantois said, “The media say my name in their news stories, but no one had ever mentioned our organization’s name, which bears my mother’s name Evelyn.” By wearing their organization’s identity, 204VI hopes that the media and the community will also recognize the organization behind Cantois and his team’s great deeds.

SUCCESSFUL 'BALIK-TANAW: The Cost of Philippine Democracy Event Commemorates Martial Law Anniversary in Canada

The event featured a martial law exhibit and a musical performance to mark the 51st year since the declaration of martial law on September 21, 1972. The exhibit put a spotlight on the Filipino people’s legacy of resistance and heroism in a time of disinformation, fake news, and historical revisionism. Prominent Filipino Canadian artists Mervin Sison, Jovelle Balani, Rein Cabalquinto and Johsa performed several Filipino songs that became popular during martial law and EDSA “People Power” revolution. “As a Filipino Canadian non-profit organization that aims to promote historical awareness, we commend all martial law survivors for tirelessly sharing their stories to educate our communities and future generations about the horrors of martial law, as well as for reminding us the importance of carrying on the legacy of nationalism and keeping the stories of the past alive in the collective memory of our people,” said Jomay Amora-Dueck, co-founder of PHSCI. “A big thanks to all our donors, advertisers, performers, friends, families, and community supporters for sharing their time, talent, and resources - your generosity and support continue to inspire us. Padyakers Winnipeg and Spandex Cycling Club Conquer the RBC Gran Fondo in Epic Style

n an awe-inspiring display of endurance and determination, the Padyakers Winnipeg and Spandex Cycling Club recently triumphed in the 2023 RBC Gran Fondo, North America's premier endurance cycling race. On September 9th, a fearless group of 13 cyclists embarked on a thrilling journey from Vancouver Island to the scenic hills of Whistler Village, covering a grueling 122-kilometer route. The race kicked off in Stanley Park, Vancouver, with cyclists weaving through the mesmerizing Vancouver Seawall and conquering the iconic Lions Gate Bridge. The adrenaline surged as they ascended Sentinel Hill, spurred on by the resounding cheers of spectators lining the steep roads. However, the astounding elevation gain—over 2100 meters— truly set this feat apart with gradients reaching a heart-pounding 15%. The group's mission: complete the race in under 5 hours. Every team member not only met this goal but also savored every moment of the event. The final stretch to Whistler tested their endurance to the limits, but they persevered, fueled by the thunderous cheers of Whistler Village. As they crossed the finish line one by one, a chorus of applause and the clinking of medals celebrated their remarkable achievement. Padyakers Winnipeg and Spandex Cycling Club's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to excellence have once again left an indelible mark on the world of endurance cycling. Their triumph in the 2023 RBC Gran Fondo is a testament to the enduring power of camaraderie and the relentless pursuit of cycling glory.

Dress Warm, Dress Right: Essential Guide to Dressing for Indoor Ice Skating Lessons

e have about 45 kids hitting the ice at Seven Oaks in a couple weeks for the Tots & Youth Learn to Skate program. Lots of DMs from parents on how they should dress their kids. Remember a cold kid isn't a happy kid. It's essential to dress warm and right. Here’s a quick guide for parents new to skating lessons: Checklist for Skating: Long-sleeved top or thick sweater. Snowsuit or water-resistant snow pants for added warmth and protection. Fleece jacket or hoodie as an outer layer. Mittens or gloves to keep fingers cozy. Thin socks (helps the skate fit well). A protective helmet. Hockey or Figure skates Dressing Tips: Layering: Keeps you insulated. Start with a base, add a mid-layer (like fleece), and finish with a waterproof top layer. For Children: A snowsuit is best. They're likely to fall, and the cushioning protects and keeps them warm. Accessories: Prioritize a goodquality helmet. For hands, mittens are warmer than gloves. Thin socks are better for a snug skate fit. Remember, the goal is to stay warm, protected, and enjoy your time on the ice. Happy skating!

Philippine Inflation Reaches 6.1% in September 2023 Amid Soaring Food and Transportation Costs

This substantial increase is primarily attributed to sharp spikes in food prices, especially rice, and the relentless rise in transportation expenses due to soaring fuel costs. Compared to August's 5.3% inflation rate, September witnessed a faster uptick in everyday goods and services prices. Nevertheless, it remained slightly lower than the 6.9% figure reported in September 2022. The most significant contributor to September's inflation was the substantial year-on-year escalation in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which jumped from 8.1% in August to a notable 9.7% in September. Following closely were increased transport costs, surging from 0.2% in August to 1.2% in September. Although the 6.1% headline inflation rate falls within the 5.3% to 6.1% range forecasted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas for September, it still exceeds the central bank's 2 to 4% inflation target. n a significant development, renowned drag queen Pura Luka Vega, formerly known for her daring impersonations, including that of Jesus in drag acts, was apprehended by Manila police. The arrest took place at her residence in Sta. Cruz last October 5., as reported by the warrant and subpoena unit of the Manila Police District's (MPD) Sta. Cruz station. Under the command of Maj. Billy Ray Canagan, the police executed an arrest warrant issued by the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 36. Vega, whose real name is Amadeus Fernando Pagente, also holds the senior health program officer position. Vega now faces charges for violating Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, amended by Presidential Decrees 960 and 969. These charges include immoral doctrines,

obscene publications and exhibitions, and indecent shows. Additionally, she is accused of violating Section 6 of Republic Act 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The Manila RTC Branch 36, under acting presiding Judge Czarina Encarnacion Samonte-Villanueva, set bail at P72,000, as confirmed by the MPD. The legal action against Vega stems from a performance in which she delivered a rock remix of the Filipino Catholic hymn "Ama Namin" in a bar, which members of the Hijos del Nazareno-Central and Balangay officers of the Quiapo Church deemed blasphemous. They considered it a direct affront to Jesus Christ, whom Vega allegedly portrayed during the act. Despite initial hearings of the complaint filed by the group, Vega claimed not to have received any summons from the Manila city prosecutor. On November 11, 2023, Waterfront Collective Creators presents the Sound of Unity 2.0., at West End Cultural Centre (586 Ellice Ave.), featuring some of the local scene's prime bands--Ninja Party, Humous, 33 RpM, and Danny E. EXPLORING PARIS: NOTRE-DAME & SACRE-COEUR by Gem and Lita Anis

he Notre-Dame Cathedral Paris or Notre-Dame de Paris (meaning "Our Lady of Paris" in French) is a must-see in the romantic capital City of Lights. Victor Hugo, French writer and politician who authored the novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, made Notre-Dame one of the most famous cathedrals in the world. Remember the main character, Quasimodo, the deaf hunchback, deformed and confined bell-ringer of the cathedral later crowned as the King of Fools? The French Gothic architectural masterpiece, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands on a tiny island called Ile de la Cite in the Seine River. Founded in 1160 by Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully, its construction began in 1163 and took nearly two centuries to complete. In the 1820s the steeple and the gargoyles were added. Notable among the outstanding features of the cathedral is the facade with its beautiful stained glass and rose windows and gallery above. Holding up the choir are the spectacular flying buttresses of the apse to the side. The

south tower of the cathedral holds the famous Emmanuel bell and the 387 steps of the north tower can be climbed for a view of the famed gargoyles. There are three (3) entrances to the cathedral - to the left is the Portal of the Virgin with signs of the zodiac and the coronation of the Virgin Mary; to the right is the Portal of St. Anne featuring the Virgin and Child, and the Central Portal depicting the Last Judgement. Much more than this we love the gorgeous interior decoration and high ceiling as well. The end walls of the transepts are a mass of glass including more fabulous rose windows in purple. Through the centuries the cathedral had suffered damage and deterioration and restoration took place in the 19th century. On 15 April 2019 NotreDame caught fire while the cathedral was undergoing renovation - its roof caught fire and burned for fifteen (15) hours destroying the fleche before its collapse and the oak roof beams. Reconstruction began in 2021 hoping to be completed by Spring 2024 in time for the opening of the 2024

Summer Olympics in Paris. A Te Deum mass would be held in the cathedral on 15 April 2024 exactly five years after the fire. Standing majestically on the top of the hill of Montmartre is the vast and impressive Romanesque and Byzantine Sacre-Coeur Basilica, its huge dome with its four small dome and bell-tower dominating the tiny squares and winding streets of the area. The Basilica of Sacre-Coeur is a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and it has maintained a perpetual adoration of the Holy Eucharist since 1885 and is also traditionally associated with the martyrdom of Saint Denis, the patron saint of Paris. The tower contains an 18.5-tonne bell called "Savoyarde" said to be one of the biggest and heaviest in the world. Leading up to the facade and porch (the bronze portico doors depict scenes of the life of Christ) of the basilica are the 222 dignified steps that you have to climb unless you want to walk thru a network of sloping path that runs alongside the gardens.
