The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival Queen Bulilit and Prinsesa ng Festival pre-pageant was held last May 14 at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM). Eleven candidates for Queen Bulilits and seven candidates for Prinsesa ng Festival were presented to the public as they also showcased their talent. All the candidates brought the house down with their exceptional performances while they exude beauty, brain, and charm throughout the night. Proud parents and supporters were present to cheer for each candidate. internet in the Philippines, even the outgoing President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has been working hard to solve the internet problem, and thus, he was able to spread the franchise to some outsiders to join and provide faster internet in the Philippines. Only lately the possibility of a faster internet has started to give the Filipinos faster access to the internet, and it will take more years to wire the whole Philippines, being a part of Duterte's legacy. At the outset, the result was very devastating to other candidates and wondering what happened to the earliest result of the elections. Most of them could not fathom how did it happen and they were caught by surprise. "I could not believe what happened, it was an instant, and the results were unbelievable," one of the local mayoralty candidates said in an interview. "Even I lost, the results were questionable!" Even many local candidates who lost and cried for an alleged vote- buying were not happy with the results. As they claimed that they were victims of this election. Before the voting held on May 9, major political parties had worked hard to get the votes of their followers. Mass rallies were held and the campaign was jampacked with die-hard followers it was more than entertainment when high profile tv and film celebrities had joined the bandwagon to win the hearts of their fans to vote for their candidates. Every presidential candidate had the hope to capture the heart of the voting public, especially the two leading presidential candidates, Leni Robredo and BongBong Marcos. The Internet had a great part in the political circus, claimed by both parties the surging flow of fake news which were targeting the candidates, giving them the chance to correct or accuse some quarters of the proliferation of untruth. Even all the candidates promised many " better things in life" for a much better country as if they would raise the wand for a magical spectacle. And now the results of the 2022 Elections seemed to be under the shadow of a doubt. the forthcoming events would be exciting to watch when Bongbong Marcos and Sarah Duterte-Carpio will be on the centre stage for the next six years of governance. Would it be pure smoke and mirrors? Your guess might be better than mine.

Breaking Barriers for a Successful Teaching Career in Manitoba by Gemma Dalayoan

T

he Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers Inc.( MAFTI) once again held a very successful event, a forum on “ Breaking Barriers for a Successful Teaching Career in Manitoba” on Saturday, May 14, from 2:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m at the Viscount Gort Hotel on Portage/Route 90. The forum attracted more than 50 participants who were divided in 4 groups. Each group was requested to discuss participants’ experiences relevant to their goals in achieving success in their teaching careers. Participants were required to answer some questions flashed on a screen, such as: Are you currently facing issues with your placement in a school division? Which of these could be your reasons? a. Not given a full-time permanent status yet b. Have been a substitute teacher for up to one year c. Have been a substitute teacher for between 1 and 4 years d. My teacher application has been denied e. Have another job outside my teaching profession Are you currently facing certain issues in applying for teacher certification? Which of these could be your reasons? a. Slow process in teacher accreditation b. High fees involved in applying for teacher accreditation c. Incomplete documents on hand d. Difficulties met to follow up on needed documents

e. So many bridging courses to take How do you intend to solve or resolve the issue(s)you are facing? a. Direct my issue to a politician b. Consult the officer-in-charge of teacher certification c. n an interview, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) should urge candidates in the recently concluded elections to remove and take down their own campaign paraphernalia. As of May 19, the DILG reported that an estimated 600 tons of posted campaign materials were removed in the NCR Regions, after they teamed up with various local government units and MMDA. The clean-up continues nationwide and DILG is still waiting for updates from its regional offices on the status. Cayetano urges people to give Marcos a chance, and judge him later on Senator-elect Allan Peter Cayetano , said on May 18th, that the nation should give president-elect Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos a chance and, to see what he does and judge him later on. "It's easy to judge him and his family before this. That much was clear. But now, Filipinos have said, 'We want him as our president'. So let's judge him based on his actions when he is there [in Malacañang]," he added in Filipino. Marcos is now leading in the presidential derby with over 30 million votes compared to his rival VP Leni Robredo who has only 14.82 milion, as per tyhe unofifcail tally.

Roe v. Wade under siege!

T ALL BEGAN WHEN a Supreme Court draft opinion leaked out that Roe v. Wade will be stricken down. Justice Samuel Alito’s "sweeping and blunt draft majority opinion" striking down Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion remains the Supreme Court's "only circulated draft in the pending Mississippi abortion case." And there are no dissenting draft opinions circulating among the justices, which means that national abortion rights appears imminent. With six conservatives on the

high court right now, it’s conceivable that Chief Justice John Roberts— usually a swing voter—would cast a dissenting vote that would end in a slim majority 5-4 vote. However, he could introduce an amendment that would water down the ruling and lessen the impact of the decision. He might even be able to convince another justice to go along with his amendment; thus, ending up with something that is palatable to the liberal justices. That’s just the way politics at the Supreme Court work. But still it’s politics at play.

Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision passed in 1973 in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose to have an abortion without excessive government restriction. The decision struck down many U.S. federal and state abortion laws. Alito’s draft opinion In Alito’s 98-page argument, he wrote that Roe v. Wade should be overruled because the Constitution “makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional amendment, including the one on which defenders of Roe … now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which states: “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” Alito then went on to differentiate between abortion and other rights guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, writing that the procedure is “fundamentally different … because it destroys ... what the law now before us describes as an ‘un-born human being.’” Clearly, the mention of abortion would immediately spark controversy, regardless of which side you’re with. Majority of American women are very protective of their reproductive rights while a small minority driven by their

religious beliefs are against abortion and they are as well pretty vocal about it. Abortion rights bill fails In an attempt to pre-empt Alito’s anticipated opinion, Senate Democratic leaders introduced a bill—Women’s Health Protection Act—that would enshrine abortion rights in federal law. The bill failed in a 49-51 vote with all 50 Republican senators, along with Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin opposing. But even if all the Democrats had voted for the bill, it would still fail to pass because it didn’t have enough support to overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold. If passed, the bill would have protected abortion access across the country and ensured the procedure remains legal in every state without additional restrictions. Manchin, an abortion opponent who represents a conservative state, said he voted against the bill because it went further than just codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law. He said the proposal “expands abortion.” He said he had been “pro-life all my life” but did believe in some exceptions to abortion bans. “And with that, that's not where we are today," he said. "We should not be dividing this country further. We're already divided." He just divided it by voting against the bill. Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who said they support abortion rights and have offered a more narrowly tailored piece of legislation to codify Roe, also voted against Wednesday's bill. The vote demonstrated the Senate’s inability to pass important legislation like the Build Back Better bill, which failed on a 49-51 vote that didn’t require a 60-vote filibuster threshold. Again, it was Manchin who dealt a blow. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, 13 states with so-called trigger laws, poised to go into effect if the Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade, the time of restricted access to birth control is unfolding in states that narrowly define when life begins. Some states are even considering legislation that would limit the kinds of birth control residents can acquire. Some conservative lawmakers wasted no time signaling they were looking into restricting or banning certain types of emergency contraception, such as Plan B and certain types of intrauterine devices—IUDs—could be restricted, or other morning-after pills that can be used within 72 hours of intercourse to prevent pregnancy. In Louisiana, legislation was introduced that would classify abortion as a homicide and define “personhood” as beginning from the moment of fertilization. Anything that would prevent a fertilized egg from turning into a pregnancy and being born into a baby could be considered a homicide. And abortion providers would be prosecuted as criminals. With all the maneuverings in the Senate, the Women’s Health Protection bill doesn’t have a chance of seeing the light of day. It has unnecessarily become too controversial that Republican women senators junked the bill. So what’s next? At this point in time, it doesn’t seem that Congress would ever pass anything that resembles the Women’s Health Protection bill, which means that the Supreme Court’s draft opinion to strike down Roe v. Wade will soon be deliberated by the justices. And unless Chief Justice John Roberts can come up with a anti-abortion ruling that can get the support of one more justice, which would give them a slim 5-4 majority decision. Otherwise, if the Supreme Court fails to fashion a palatable anti-abortion decision – like something that would legitimize abortion of pregnancies caused by rape or incest. At the end of the day, unless the Senate gets its act together, Roe v. Wade will soon cease to be the law of the land. Yes, Roe v. Wade is under siege in America!

MLA's Statement recognizes Clarita Nazario for her community volunteerism

N

otre Dame MLA Malaya Marcelino issued an MLA Statement recognizing the community and charitable involvement of Clarita Nazario in the Filipino community and in her hometown Malolos, Bulacan in a simple ceremony held recently at the lobby of Manitoba Legislative Building.

Clarita Nazario has been active in the community volunteerism in the Filipino community in and in the Philippines in various capacities, as the former board of directors and treasurer of the Canadian Philippine Centre of Manitoba, and currently the vice president of the Original Filipino Senior Association of Manitoba, and former president

of the Bulacan Association of Manitoba and member of the Ladies of Rizal. She is also a member of the Manitoba Canadian Filipino Association (MaCFA). In the Philippines, before immigrating to Canada in 1995, Clarita donated her sewing machine equipment to the Malolos prison to provide lessons in dressmaking.

One of the former lead workers who has been in prison was hired as the sewing instructor, giving her the chance to work with a minimal salary. She had been engaged in the fashion industry while living in Malolos, Bulacan. In Winnipeg, Clarita is busy with her home based-nursing home and she dabbles also in sewing

PCCM'S FIRST FOOD FEST AND TRADE SHOW DEFINES THE SUMMER WE WANT TO HAVE

he very first Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba's (PCCM) Food Fest and Trade Show held last May 14 and 15 on the grounds of PCCM, was a huge success, that officers and board members are planning to organize another one. "Despite the weather, our first PCCM Food Fest and Trade Show was a huge success. We are looking forward to replicate it again this year on Ausguts 27 and 28 with a bigger event," Marketing Director Dante Aviso said. The event drew many kababayans to enjoy local cuisine, crafts and sercices .Various Filpino food stalls and some businesses were present to serve the Filipino community. PMMC President Virginia Gayot is expressed her gratitude

hese kinds of music that I have all lumped under the New Wave banner (for ease of using so many little subgenres) did not stop in the 1980s. In fact, the genre's flag-carriers such as Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, and The Psychedelic Furs have something new for the current decade, but those are for another story. The Manitoba Filipino Street Festival Queen Bulilit and Prinsesa ng Festival pre-pageant was held last May 14 at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM). Eleven candidates for Queen Bulilits and seven candidates for Prinsesa ng Festival were presented to the public as they also showcased their talent. All the candidates brought the house down with their exceptional performances while they exude beauty, brain, and charm throughout the night. Proud parents and supporters were present to cheer for each candidate. MFSF officials Ley Navarro and Aida Champagne gave their special messages and invite to the coronation night happening on June 18, 2022. The Queen Buliliit and Prinsesa ng Festival Pageant is just one of the many highlights of this year's Manitoba Filipino Street Festival on June 18-19 at the Maples Multiplex and Grounds.
