ARANEZ, MANITOBA BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Manny Aranez, Commissioner of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is set to be inducted as a Builder into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame this coming September. Basketball Manitoba called him the "patriarch of Filipino basketball" and to the thousands of basketball players, coaches and volunteers, all know him as "Tito Manny". His love and passion for basketball over the last 20 years has inspired generations of Filipino basketball players.

In PBA last season in 2019-20 before the COVID-19 pandemic, the PBA League had over 114 teams across 14 divisions. The mission of the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame is to induct into the Hall players, teams and builders for their outstanding achievements in the sport of basketball in Manitoba as well as to preserve and showcase the rich history of basketball in Manitoba.

Garden of Gift Giving inspires Filipino seniors to engage in outdoor and indoor gardenings FSGW's community garden invites veggie gardeners to plant veggies for "from garden to table" concept.

T

he Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg has launched "Garden of Gift Giving" to let the Filipino seniors enjoy gardening in this time of Covid-19 and at the same time, to have a chance to know more about veggies, flowers, and household plants, giving them a great time to be busy while staying home due to some health protocols imposed by health officials.

"With Garden of Gift Giving, we want to share with our seniors the health benefits of outdoor and indoor gardening.

We want them to enjoy themselves while living alone or with their loved ones. So we decided to convert the basement of the centre into a nursery and with the help of countless volunteers, we were able to get support from people who love gardening," said Aida Champagne, former FSGW president and former Chairperson of the Manitoba Filipino Street Food Festival.

The FSGW vertical farming fever became hotter when the volunteers started dedicating their time and money, the idea to raise funds for the maintenance of the seniors center ballooned. The knowhow and knowledge of Allan Basco, Elmer Aquino, Jie Aquino, and Bobbit Nepomuceno were incorporated to make the "Garden of Gift Giving" realized.

Lately, last Thursday, the Community Garden at the backyard of the FSGW Centre started to take shape with the help of the members of FILCAN Cabletow Lodge 189 led by Kaka Manlapaz, Felino

May 16th was supposed to be the North End Drive-Thru Drop-Off eWaste Collection event at Ralph Brown Community Centre. Due to recent COVID19 public health orders, the event was postponed and shared on social media. The public health orders didn't stop residents from bringing down their ewaste in an unofficial drop off event. The following ewaste was collected despite the postponement of the event. Ewaste can be picked up by calling or email Aira Villanueva.

Philippine Customs and Traditions Continue to Thrive Online, In Cinema

“COVID ka lang, Pinoy kami!”

After more than a year of enduring the COVID-19 pandemic and the frequent lockdowns and isolation that came with it, this expression of good-humored bravado is one that the average kababayan has heard or seen on Philippine TV and social media.

For non-Filipino speaking readers of this column, that translates to “You are just COVID, we are Filipino.”

It also characterizes the efforts of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba, Inc. (PHCM) in tandem with Barangay Canada in coming up with the online series on Filipino Customs and Traditions. These two organizations did not let the pandemic stop them from continuing to promote Philippine culture and heritage. As the public health restrictions on gatherings put a stop to workshops and seminars, Pinoy resourcefulness and tech-savvy found a way to keep

the important conversations going by moving them online through video conferencing.

Philippine Customs and Traditions Online Series The free monthly program started back in February of this year, with its inaugural episode showcasing the courtship rituals in the Philippines.

The episodes are live streamed on the Facebook pages of the two organizing entities and embedded on a page on their respective websites as well.

For the month of March, the topic was the kickoff of the Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.

Pastor Victor Cuarto, a former history instructor of the De La Salle University, was the invited resource person. He provided additional historical context about the occasion and discussed the significance of the celebration’s chosen theme of

Victory and Humanity.

The most recent episode of the live stream series came out a week after Mother’s Day so the topic was naturally ‘Buhay Nanay sa Canada’ as it paid tribute to Filipino moms in Canada. Three different Filipino-Canadian moms were invited as resource persons. They each represented different mom-scenarios: one who started a family here, one who migrated to Canada with their kids at a young, formative age, and one who is a second generation Filipino-Canadian raising a family.

The guests were Notre Dame MLA Malaya Marcelino, Lorna Aquino, and Girlie Romero. On the side of the panelists were ‘Tita’ Perla Javate, PHCM President, secretary Gani Casalla and yours truly.

Filipino Heritage Month & PHCM Virtual Gala With the month of June just around the corner, the Filipino community across Canada gets ready to celebrate Filipino Heritage Month once again.

It was a historic milestone for kababayans in Canada back in 2018 when the Filipino Heritage Month Act passed in Parliament and was celebrated for the first time the following year. With the arrival of COVID-19 the following year however, all celebrations got scrapped. But now that the community has learned to adapt to this new normal, a lot of organizations are busily preparing to resume activities by switching over to the virtual platform.

Case in point: this year’s Filipino Heritage Month features a slew of culture and heritage programs that are free and accessible online. The Filipino Heritage Month coalition – made up of the Philippine Advancement Through Arts and Culture (PATAC), Barangay Canada, East Coast Filipino Portal and other notable kababayan organizations – have banded together for the SALUDO 2021 project. continued on page 5 ►

Invoking the spirit of Bayanihan, the project aims to cooperatively promote all events and programs of Filipino Heritage Month. The gallery of events and their dates can be seen on the website at http:// saludocanada.ca. Site visitors who are also organizing celebrations in their area in Canada are encouraged to sign up and add their event so that kababayans in other parts of Canada will be aware of them and tune in.

Here in Manitoba, the PHCM is in the thick of preparations for a Virtual Gala to celebrate the 123rd Philippine Independence Day as well as the Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.

The event will be live streamed over the Facebook pages of PHCM and Barangay Canada, and will also be embedded on special pages in their respective websites.

The Virtual Gala is scheduled on June 12 at 7 p.m. central. More details will be announced soon on social media when they become available.

As the Filipino-Canadian community looks forward to successfully pulling off these online celebrations for Filipino Heritage Month, we would have earned the right to say, “COVID ka lang, Pinoy kami!”

(On the Hidden Ugliness of Beauty Pageants) Tagasubaybay ka ba ng mga paligsahang pangkagandahan na gaya ng Miss Universe?

Ako, hinde.

I see them as a glamorized extension of female objectification.

Women are being judged...for what? Beauty? Isn't this subjective?

Aren't all the contestants beautiful already? Why the need to pit them against each other, as if proving a point which country has the most beautiful woman/men in the whole universe?

In the recent decades, committees even added "brains" segment, in which the contestants will answer "intelligent" questions veering towards world politics and issues-which to me is only an attempt to legitimize this ridiculous, subliminal battle of egos and insecurities. And even more cunningly, they dress this shallow parade with besequined gowns of advocacy.

Pageants--like showbiz--has become seemingly intentional distractions--an anaesthesia for the masses, to numb them from the real economic problems ailing the country.

ProtectMB Vaccine Ambassador: Perla Javate

T

hree years ago, I retired from the Winnipeg School Division, where I was a community liaison officer for 35 years. But I like to keep myself busy. I volunteer as co-chair of the Ethnocultural Council of Manitoba, president of the Coalition of Filipino Canadians for Stronger Families Inc, and president of the Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba. I have no family in Winnipeg, so my

community is my family.

When I called to make an appointment for my vaccination, I used the callback option, so I didn’t have to stay on the phone for too long. I had my first shot of the vaccine at the RBC Convention Centre on April 2. By then, they had the process well established. It took me about 40 minutes total in the building. Every step of the way they had staff directing which way to

go in the building. For the vaccine, the immunizer comes to inject you while you’re sitting down. I didn’t even feel the needle, it was so light.

I had my eyes closed, I was biting my nails, I was ready for a painful prick, but it was painless and over in a second.

After having the first dose of vaccine, you feel a little safer. But you still have to be cautious, not acting like everything is normal.

Now I’m waiting for the second shot.

As long as the vaccination consent form is already filled out ahead of time, you shouldn’t have much of a language barrier if english or french isn’t your first language.

They have many workers to point you in the right direction. When the immunizer comes to give you the vaccination, they tell you to wait for 15 minutes before you leave, then they tell you that you’ll get a call in 3 to 4 months for the second shot.

In the Filipino community, there have been postings on Facebook to ask friends and family to assist seniors who might not know how to

navigate the system, from phoning to booking a vaccination appointment to go to the Super-Site. Seniors may know how to take the bus but may not feel safe taking it at this time. It’s helpful to give them rides to the vaccination centres.There was a survey of how ethnocultural communities were impacted by COVID, and it found that 12% of the Filipino community in Manitoba have been infected by COVID. Most infections happened in workplaces, and many Filipinos are working in essential jobs requiring them to be physically at work. Many of them also come from multigenerational families.

There’s been all kinds of myths on social media about vaccines, unfortunately. I tell people these myths aren’t based on science. The vaccines are approved by Health Canada and scientists who did their work to make sure it is safe for everyone. It is important for us to get vaccinated if we want to get out of the pandemic. We are all in this together.

Luckily, I’m set up for solitude and I enjoy that. But still, during COVID, I miss going out. I miss getting together for all kinds of celebrations. I am usually kept busy organizing cultural events with my group. Now, we have to be creative, organizing online events. During lockdowns, we weren’t able to go to church. Live streaming is different from being able to go to church, be with your church community, and celebrate the Holy Mass.

Also with COVID, I feel grounded from being able to travel. Normally, I travel at least twice per year to meet up with family who are spread out in North America and Asia. And I love travelling to Europe—I lived in the Netherlands for three years.

I’m lucky that in the beginning of the pandemic, I had just moved to a new apartment on the 11th floor with large glass windows and a great view of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. It gives you a sense of being part of a big, wide world, which I hope and pray will be free from COVID-19 soon.

Pia Wurtzbach Expresses her Sentiments on Pageant Fans’ Cheating Allegations

MaiMai Entrata to Drop New Single on May 21 It’s going to be a TGIF weekend for actress Maymay Entrata as she is all set to release her new song, “Di Kawalan” this May 21, just a week after she turned 24 years old.

According to her record label, Star Pop in its Instagram post, Entrata’s song will be available on all music apps worldwide.

The said post showed a video of the actress posing in front of a red moon.

Apart from this, Entrata announced that her single release will come with a series of pictures

Former Miss Universe winner, Pia Wurtzbach, conveyed her sentiments against pageant fans who were not able to accept Rabiya Mateo’s defeat and have accused the organization of cheating during the competition.

In her talk with fellow beauty queens Carla Lizardo and Bianca Guidotti in an episode of the YouTube podcast, “queentahuan” Wurtzbach said that she did not like the allegation of the pageant being “bought”.

She expressed her dislike of the public overthinking the competition mainly because they cannot accept the fate of the country’s contender, stating that she hopes that people will learn to be “good sports.”

The final results of the 2021 Miss Universe pageant has Miss Mexico, Andrea Meza, as the winner while the country’s bet, Rabiya Mateo made it only up to Top 21.

Wurtbach added that fans should also learn to respect the decision of the judges, pointing out that questioning such actually defeats the purpose of Miss Universe and the message it conveys about the candidates who join the said competition.

The message of Miss Universe to the world is all about “acceptance, regardless of what country you came from; hence, a bad audience is the complete opposite of what it wants to convey,” the former beauty queen explained.

Wurtzbach admitted that although disappointed that Mateo did not win, she believes that being able to compete in the pageant alone is already a stepping stone and will surely open a lot of doors for her.

DOH: “COVID-19 cases decreasing in Manila but rising in Vis-Min”

BI Warns OFWS against New Modus of Recruiters

epartment of Health (DOH) has reported a significant decrease of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila and Central Luzon but a noticeable increase in Visayas and Mindanao.

As per OIC director of DOH Epidemiology Bureau Dr. Althea de Guzman, they are monitoring the said regions because although it is not rapid, there is still a rise in cases.

He reported that cases in Zamboanga Peninsula rose to 1,500 when the month of May started, which was four times the number of cases it had during April.

Aside from Zamboanga, a rise in cases has also been noted in the Western and Eastern Visayas, Soccsksargen, Bicol Region, Caraga, Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) issued a warning to Filipinos who wish to work overseas against recruiters using a modus operandi dubbed as “third-country recruitment” wherein a victim is given a fake itinerary but is illegally brought to another country to work there.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente gave this warning after the interception of four female OFWS, who presented documents to work in Maldives but were actually bound for the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

he Cebu Department of Health regional office has told business establishments, specifically bars and restaurants, that discos are still not allowed.

Such statement came after the police caught a club, located

at General Maxilom Avenue, Cebu City, holding a disco last May 14.

DOH spokesperson in Central Visayas, Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, stated that mass gatherings, like discos, is a “big no-no” and should be prohibited even in areas under modified general community quarantine

Since the beginning of the socalled beauty pageant era, females from all walks of life have idolized and aspired for the beauty of their chosen candidate/titlist and tried to imitate them from hairstyle to footwear. This, based on research, has known advantages and disadvantages.

As a result, they degenerate; lose their self-confidence and self-worth; isolate themselves from others; and create their own little world which they alone could understand. Some resort to committing crimes; others to the extent of even taking their own lives.

Pageants have become part of many people's everyday lives because, I believe, these people have gotten used to having it within the circulation and that, not having it would be an abnormality. I say it's time for the experts in the field of

Psychology to lend a thought or two on the presence of pageants and their effects on the citizenry in general, mostly those who patronize it.

The call of these pageants have always been "world peace."

However, after all these years, world peace has not been achieved.

Among participating countries, each candidate competing against each other is already considered a sign of disparity. Then what of the ones who lost? Are they now branded as not competitively beautiful?

Based on history, how many of those losing candidates have taken

the fame, glamor, limelight, and lustre it carries.

What does it mean to be "beautiful?"

An old cliché would say, "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." This would mean that each person would have different definitions or perception

of beauty--which is actually good.

Some who may not have developed a pretty face but possess a kind heart and good attitude are also beautiful. Those who seem to not have complete body parts and are considered differently abled, but are kind, confident, and friendly among others, are beautiful, too.

not evolve equally. Some are too thin; some too short; others too tall; worse, some--as many people describe--ugly.

Overall, truthfully, one will find beauty in a person not just by focusing on the outer/physical appearance, but by looking beyond it. Remember, beauty is a notion that rests in our brains. People are

beautiful because we are rational beings. We think and we reason (at least, most of us). Elegance is in the confidence, personality, attitude, mindset, and kindness that we have. That is the greater and more important kind of beauty. This is the beauty that we should dwell on, embrace, and celebrate.

Republican Party in turmoil PEREZCOPE

lizabeth “Liz” Lynne Cheney was born on July 28, 1966 in Madison, Wisconsin, the elder of two daughters of former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Second Lady Lynne Cheney. She is an attorney and politician serving the House of Representatives as the congresswoman from Wyoming’s atlarge congressional district since 2017.

Cheney like her father is neoconservative, known for her focus on national security, her support for the U.S. military, a pro-business stance, foreign policy views, and for being fiscally and socially conservative.

Cheney supported Trump's position in 92.9% of House votes.

On November 14, 2018, Cheney’s party mates elected her chair of the House Republican Conference, the third-ranking Republican in the chamber, behind Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steve Scalise. She was the highest-ranking Republican woman in Congress.

Cheney is considered one of the leaders of the neoconservative wing of the Republican Party and she was critical of the foreign policy of the Donald Trump administration. She supported the second impeachment of Trump for his role in the 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol.

Because of her vote and Trump’s stolen election narrative – known as the “Big Lie” – pro-Trump Freedom

Caucus members of the House tried to remove her from party leadership in February 2021. They failed to remove her at that time. They tried again on May 12, 2021, when she was removed from the position by voice vote of the House Republican Conference.

Fiery last stand On the eve of her removal, Cheney took a fiery last stand on the House floor, warning that Trump had created a threat that the country had never seen before: he had “provoked a violent attack” on the U.S. Capitol “in an effort to steal the election.”

She said she wouldn’t sit quietly by as Republicans abandoned the rule of law.

“Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar,” Cheney said. “I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.”

To the very end, she remained defiant, underscoring her determination to fight the powerful Republican cliché that kowtows to Trump. Yes, she embraced her downfall rather than fight it, offering herself as the sacrificial lamb to save the Republican Party or what’s left in its destructive path.

Speaking during the closed-door

meeting with House Republicans, Cheney said: “If you want leaders who will enable and spread his destructive lies, I’m not your person, you have plenty of others to choose from. That will be their legacy.” She added: “We cannot let the former president drag us backward and make us complicit in his efforts to unravel our democracy.

Down that path lies our destruction, and potentially the destruction of our country.”

After the meeting, Cheney told the reporters that she did not feel betrayed by her ouster. “I am going to keep on fighting to prevent Mr. Trump from ever making his way back to the White House,” she said.

“We cannot both embrace the big lie and embrace the constitution ... I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office.” It’s her opening salvo in her declaration of war against Trump and his minions.

Cheney’s campaign for the 2024 election has just begun.

National figure Cheney’s removal makes her a national figure with a huge platform from which to voice her opinion with the authority of someone who chose country over party, which reminds me of the late President of the Philippines Manuel L. Quezon, from 1935 to 1944, who once said, “My loyalty to my party ends where my loyalty to my country begins.” It was true then, it’s true now.

By severing her ties to Trump, Cheney is now the only openly antiTrump Republican in Congress. She has done something that nobody would dare do in the open for fear of antagonizing Trump, who many believe they could lose in the primary because of Trump’s strong support

from his base of voters. But is that the truth or it’s just a myth?

But how can Trump claim his primacy when he lost the 2020 election by eight million votes to Joe Biden?

Do you think that he can improve his numbers in 2024 when he runs for president against Biden or Kamala Harris if Biden wouldn’t run for reelection in 2024? Or can he beat Cheney in a Republican primary who by the looks of it is tailor-made to lead the Republican Party or a third party in the 2024 election?

However, she described the grip Trump had on the Republican Party as “dangerous” and “a cult of personality.”

She said it was a “betrayal” to see him try to burn down the party and American democracy in an attempt to regain power. “It’s a real betrayal.

He’s going to unravel the democracy to come back into power,” Cheney said.

Anti-Trump coalition Meanwhile, on May 13, a coalition of 150 prominent Republican and independent leaders released “A Call for American Renewal,” a principle-based vision for American leadership, as an alternative to the current direction of the Republican Party amid growing extremism in the country. It calls for strengthening the rule of law and increasing government ethics. The manifesto was released one day after the ousting of Cheney as chair of the House Republican Conference, and was largely seen as a reaction against the influence of Trumpism within the Republican Party.

While the GOP leadership marginalizes Cheney and other members for simple acts of truth-telling and conscience, founding signatories are mobilizing disaffected voters “to impact competitive elections around the country and shape the future of the nation.”

This “common-sense coalition” seeks to catalyze the reform of the Republican Party and its recommitment to truth,

founding ideals, and decency or, if unsuccessful, lay the foundation for an alternative – possibly a third party.

Among the signers are four former governors, including Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford; 27 former members of the U.S. House of Representatives, including Barbara Comstock, Charlie Dent and Paul Mitchell; and one former Senator David Durenberger. Other prominent names include attorney George Conway, husband of senior Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway; former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci; former Department of Homeland Security official Elizabeth Neumann; and former DHS general counsel John Mitnick.

In my column, “Quo vadis, Republican Party?” (April 9, 2021), I wrote: “Leaderless and rudderless, the Republican Party seems like it is about to implode. A lot of Republicans are disillusioned. Many have changed their party affiliations. They believe that the Grand Old Party of Abraham Lincoln has lost its vision and moral compass. The party needs an extreme makeover to survive and remain a viable political party. Quo vadis, Republican Party?”

In the short time since then, the world of Republicanism has turned upside down. A political civil war broke out on May 12, pitting a lone Republican congresswoman – Liz Cheney – and her supporters against the powerful clique of Republican leaders led by Senate Minority Floor Leader Mitch McConnell and House of Representatives Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who are promoting former president Donald Trump’s “Big Lie” that the 2020 election was stolen. The following day, the manifesto called “A Call to American Renewal” was released.

Now, the shooting starts! As they say: In politics, there is never a dull moment.

New Record from the English Wild Boys

o this day, many think that Duran Duran was only of the 1980s and that it disbanded long ago. But the fact is, vocalist Simon LeBon and founder/keyboardist Nick Rhodes never left the band and soldiered on past their heyday and through the challenging decades that followed.

After Duran Duran's illustrious days in the 1980s, the mediapeople at large--who are always on a hunt for something new and younger-began to tire of them. Despite that, the band did not stop from recording new materials.

In the 1990s, Duran Duran still managed to secure a good standing, with "Come Undone" and "Ordinary World," albeit falling under the commercial radar after that.

The so-called Cuccurullo era (1990-2000) is often ignored, but it produced five albums, which included the self-titled record with the heartrending hit "Ordinary World," expressing the band members' struggles in facing their perceived irrelevance in the Grunge-dominated

1990s. (Originally from Missing Persons, Warren Cuccurullo served as an effective guitarist and cosongwriter for Duran Duran during his time with the band.)

2000's Pop Thrash was almost written off; but to the keen-eared, its songs are as compelling as any Duran Duran material--the Psychedelictinged "Hallucinating Elvis," the upbeat and angular "Lava Lamp," and the bittersweet ballad "Someone Else Not Me" deserve revisiting.

For the obvious reason of the original members' reuniting in the early 2000s, the press coverage became momentous once again, especially in promoting 2004's Astronaut--the first album to feature the fabulous five members since 1983's Seven and the Ragged Tiger ("The Reflex," "New Moon on Monday," "Union of the Snake"). With the then new single "(Reach Up for The) Sunrise," Duran Duran was back in the limelight. However, the departure of guitarist Andy Taylor soon after had derailed again the band's momentum.

Let’s get social

The remaining four carried on, releasing three albums more--2007's Red Carpet Massacre, 2010's All You Need Is Now, and 2015's Paper Gods.

And now, still full of musical ideas, Duran Duran is set to release in September its 15th studio album, titled Future Past. With Giorgio Moroder and Blur guitarist Graham Coxon as part of the production team, the upcoming record is surely full of pleasant surprises. *Final Note* So, who said that Duran Duran was long gone? The band that was formed in 1978, in Birmigham, England, practically did not rest after all--15 albums, from 1981's self-titled to 2015's Paper Gods and the coming Future Past, the wild boys are still at it--driven like hungry wolves and glamorous as ever!
