Paul Ong's Annual Concert raises over P45k for Sistema Winnipeg A Night of Giving and Musical Brilliance

Last April 29th, the Calvary Temple was packed again with music enthusiasts, guests and supporters who came to witness the spectacular annual concert of Paul Ong.

Accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, local singer Paul Ong performed with the amazing students from Garden Grove School and Sistema Winnipeg.

As known to everybody, this concert wasn't just about good

music and great performances.

It was also for a good cause. For years now, the annual concert of Ong has been supporting Sistema Winnipeg, a non-profit organization that provides music education to youth in Winnipeg's at-risk communities. And this year's concert was no exception.

Sistema Winnipeg expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the support they have received from the concert. With the vital support

they received, Sistema Winnipeg will be able to continue inspiring and making a positive difference in the lives of the youth in their community.

Ong expressed his awe at the talent of the students and his gratitude for the ongoing support from the community. With music as a platform, Ong is able to spark positive social impacts and share the joy of good music with others.

Focus on Filipino Music

At Táyo'y Dáhon

One of the pioneers of Philippine Punk music, Philippine Violators unleashes its latest record, titled Rarities 2023, a compilation of previously unreleased recordings.

Formed in 1984, in Manila, Philippines, Philippine Violators was the brainchild of the brothers Jesus Espiritu (guitars) and Bong Espiritu (vocals). The enduring band was among the pioneers of Philippine Punk music and was also a part of the legendary Twisted Red Cross records, releasing six studio albums--from 1987's 'At Large!' to the breakthrough 'Sikát Na si Pédro' of 1994, and finally, 2015's 'Noón at Ngayón.'

My old band Half Life Half Death had the opportunity to play alongside Philippine Violators many times during the '90s heyday of Philippine Alternative Rock music.

Rarities 2023 is a compilation of songs by the band,

as curated by Jesus Espiritu himself. It includes their previously unreleased version of Sakáda's "Luhà" and snippets of their interview with the late, iconic DJ Howlin' Dave (Dante David) of the Philippine radio station DZRJ AM of old. Those wbo are interested to get a copy of this album, contact Marilou or Jesus Espiritu on Facebook.

Winnipeg Jets eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoffs

The Winnipeg Jets may have been eliminated from the NHL playoffs by the Vegas Golden Knights, but they have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the future.

Despite struggling with inconsistency throughout the regular season, the Jets managed to sqeak into the playoffs with a wildcard spot. While their loss to Vegas in the opening round was disappointing, it was a valuable learning experience that will help the team grow and improve in the future.

Looking ahead, the Jets have several promising young players, including Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers, who are already making significant contributions to the team. They also have a solid core of veteran players, including Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, and Connor Hellebuyck, who are all key pieces of the team's success.

The Jets have limited cap space, but they have several options to free up more money, including making tough decisions about their core players. Pierre-Luc Dubois, a restricted free agent with arbitration rights, is a top priority for the front office, and negotiations are

already underway to secure his future with the team. While the Jets may need to explore the possibility of a rebuild to some degree, they have the pieces in place to remain competitive in the coming years. With the right moves this offseason and a continued commitment to improvement, the Jets could be a team to watch in the upcoming seasons.

Walking leisurely under the searing heat of the sun, I went down to the pedestrian tunnels and I found a man sleeping, together with his dog while a strong scent of urine filtered the air. Looked around to see writings on the walls by vandals, and some tiles on the floor started to loosen up.

Moved by the presence of the mother and the daughter with a dog, I handed some 20 pesos loose coins. "Okay, here is the money for you and for your dog." "Salamat po," the young girl with a spark in her eyes, said.

What images stuck in my mind were the images of the man and the dog. So telling moved my very sense of value and how important the warm relationship between human beings and the dog giving me the best reason why a dog is man's best friend, even with a rich or poor master.

The dog has the innocence of poverty, a strong sense of wantedness, and a sense of genuine belonging; unlike the man who has to maintain a certain social life to be different, to be in a higher status in society, and to be a master, to be in a higher caste.

But the dogs, having a rich or a poor master, are still man's best friends.

A Day of Discovery in Versailles, France

and its place in world history.

Avisit to the French capital city, Paris, known as the "City of Lights", the "City of Love", and the "Most Romantic City in the World", would not be complete without a trip to Versailles. Exploring Paris ordinarily involves the touristy experience of spending hours in the LOUVRE, the world's largest museum and the home to the original "Mona Lisa", or at the Gothic CATHEDRAL OF NOTRE-

DAME on the Seine River, or at the EIFFEL TOWER, the symbol of Paris soaring high above the city skyline, or at the CHAMPS-ELYSEES, the most famous thoroughfare with the ARC DE TRIOMPHE, or at "SACRE-COEUR, the Romanesque church standing at the top of the hill of MONTMARTRER, the historic artists' quarter, or at MOULINROUGE cabaret.

But Versailles is different especially because of the opulent Palace of Versailles

Situated just over three quarters of an hour away from the capital city, Versailles is located in the department of Yvelines, the region called "Ilede-France" about 20 kms. southwest of the city centre. Versailles with a population of 85,862 inhabitants is a wealthy suburb of Paris. We have a full day to explore the "Chateau de Versailles", its beautiful gardens and the Trianons (villas).

The Palace of Versailles, once a royal hunting lodge, is a former royal residence built by the French King Louis XIV. The baroque palace of 700 rooms is a stunning castle with its opulent architecture, sprawling grounds and gardens and lush forests.

It has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1979 for its importance

as the centre of power, art and science in France.

Visibly once inside the palace you'll see the most extraordinary astronomical clock once watched by the kings of France and adjusted to function until the year 9999!

We're so much amazed by the Hall of Mirrors, the most famous room in the palace. It pays tribute to the political, economic and artistic successes of France. It has seventeen (17) enormous mirrored arches facing 17 windows overlooking the parks, each arch containing 21 mirrors for a total of 357 mirrors. A perfect addition to the mirrored hall are several glass chandeliers hanging from a 40-foot height ceiling with brightly painted murals. During special occasions the hall was lit with 20,000 candles turning it into a 'Corridor of Lights". The dimly light was intended to protect the ornate walls and the ceilings from the candle smoke.

Suite of gilt-wood furniture, the Hall of Mirrors was used as a passage. Each day the courtiers would wait here for the King and the Royal family on their way to mass in procession. It was also the setting for receptions held for foreign dignitaries like ambassadors or for state audiences. Balls were given here in honour of royal marriages.

The Hall of Mirrors is also internationally famous for being the site where several important world events had taken place particularly the signing of the Treaty of Versailles,

28 June 1919. which put an end to the First Wolrd War (World War I between Germany and the Allied Powers. Four representatives of the allied powers were at the table in the Hall of Mirrors - George Clemenceau for France, Woodrow Wilson for the United States, David Llyod George for Great Britain, and Vittorio Orlando for Italy. The German delegation was composed of Herman Muller, Foreign Affairs Minister and Doctor Bell, a jurist.

Worth seeing are the two villas, known as trianons in the palace grounds - the Grand Trianon where the king would go to escape the court of Versailles and the petit trianon where Marie Antoinette, last queen of France before the French Revolution of 1789, once resided.

Situated to the west of the palace, the gardens, now one of the most visited public sites in France, cover some 800 hectares of land, landscaped in the classic French formal garden style. In addition to the manicured lawns and sculptures are the fountains located throughout the gardens.

The gem at the heart of the gardens of Versailles is the famous Latona's fountain. It illustrates the story of goddess Latona, mother of the sun and moon gods. with her statue on the top tier of the fountain featured with frog and lizard characters. The Latona fountain has been cited as inspiration for the Buckingham fountain in the city of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.

At the end of the tour we whetted our taste buds with chilled but churned coffee-flavoured sorbet at the "Le Dauphin" in the middle of the gardens. Then back to Paris.

Happy Asian Heritage Month

While there have been artists whose solo careers catapulted to heights more stellar than those of their erstwhile bands, there are also those who did not fare as well but whose outputs are as interesting and worthy of digging.

While Belinda Carlisle and the legitimately solo singer-songwriter

Billy Bragg achieved remarkable individual successes, the rest of the following were unable to outshine the sheen of their groups; but that's okay--to be able to create new music on their own accord is surely the main goal anyway.

Biden hails the Philippines as "no better partner"

US President Joe Biden met with Philippine President Marcos at the White House last May 1 to discuss regional security issues, particularly China's aggressive activities in the South China Sea. Biden hailed Marcos as a "better partner" in facing new challenges of the century. The two leaders initially met in New York last year, where Marcos emphasized the need for a strong alliance to evolve as challenges arise in the new century. Biden recognized the strong partnership and "deep friendship" between the two countries, emphasizing the US's commitment to the defense of the Philippines, including the South China Sea. In response, Marcos highlighted the need to strengthen alliances and partnerships amid the post-pandemic world's geopolitical issues.

The South China Sea is a busy sea lane where over $5 trillion in goods pass through annually, but it

is also the subject of a longstanding maritime dispute involving China, which claims virtually the entire area. Meanwhile, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, and Taiwan have overlapping claims. In 2016, an arbitral court based in The Hague invalidated China's expansive claim, which Beijing refused to recognize.

According to a senior US official, the Marcos visit was the

first "at this level and intensity" between the two countries in decades. The official also noted that the meeting occurred during a "deeply consequential period" as the US engages in Indo-Pacific diplomacy amid China's increased military and economic assertiveness and North Korea's nuclear program. The Oval Office meeting was Biden's latest high-level diplomacy with Pacific leaders.

First Time Jobseekers Assistance Act Helps 200K Filipinos Secure Employment Documents

DOLE's

Around 200,000 first-time job hunters have benefited from the Philippine government's program offering free pre-employment documentary requirements, according to Patrick Patriwirawan Jr., the Bureau of Local Employment Director of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

In an interview with The Mangahas Interviews, Patriwirawan said the government is implementing the First Time Jobseekers Assistance Act, which was enacted in 2018, to waive fees and charges for firsttime job seekers who need licenses, proofs of identification, clearances, and other employment documents.

Under the program, preemployment requirements such as the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance and other similar documents are free. As per the DOLE official, the program has already provided assistance to

around 200,000 first-time job seekers, and the government is monitoring its progress.

Arecent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) in the Philippines found that a majority of Filipinos who had registered their SIM cards found the process easy. The survey was conducted from March 26 to 29, 2023, and released on Wednesday, May 4, 2023. Of the adult SIM card owners surveyed, 56% had registered their SIM cards, while 44% had yet to do so. The survey was conducted one month before the initial deadline to comply with the SIM Registration Act, signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in October 2022.

Of those who had registered their SIM cards, 72% considered the process easy. Specifically, 44%

of respondents found it “very easy,” while 28% said it was “somewhat easy.” The remaining 28% considered the process to be hard.

According to Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy, around 82 million SIM cards had been registered, with Globe subscribers accounting for over 37 million, Smart subscribers for over 39 million, and DITO subscribers for over 5 million. The law requiring Filipinos to register their SIM cards was implemented to curb scams and other crimes, but critics are concerned about data breaches and privacy violations. In response, President Marcos Jr. approved a 90-day extension of the registration deadline.
