Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken In his virtual address, President Zelensky personally urged Canadians to "do more" to protect Ukraine from Russia.

n a very historic joint session of the Canadian Parliament last Tuesday, President Zelenskyy delivered a very personal and powerful message of continued cooperation and renewed plea for a "no fly-zone " over Ukraine, to save more lives of people and to halt the destructions of

many infrastructures and buildings including a hospital in Mariupol where hundreds were killed and injured, mostly children and patients as victims.

"Please expand your efforts to bring back peace in our peaceful country. I believe and I know that you can do it. We are part of the anti-war coalition and jointly I am sure that we’ll achieve results," Zelenskyy said in his casual bearing

while addressing the Canadian joint session in an unknown bunker in Ukraine.

At the beginning of the joint session, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau welcomed President Zelenskyy and said: "You're defending the right of Ukrainians to choose their own future. Democracies around the world are lucky to have you as our champion."

historical and cultural links with Ukraine as more than 1.5 million Canadians have roots in Ukraine, started by the pioneers who settled in Western Canada.

During his more than 20-minute address, Zelenskyy heartfully thanked Canada as a steadfast supporter for the ongoing military and humanitarian assistance. And dutifully asked to keep up its sanctioning of powerful and influential Russians who are close to President Putin.

Zelenskyy also mentioned the horror of wars, the continuing bombing day and night, and the cry of the children and mothers who are victims of the vicious authoritarian Putin. He cited to imagine if Canada's cities, like Vancouver, Edmonton, and landmarks like CN Tower in Toronto, would be bombed by Russians.

Zelenskyy, a former comedic actor and a popular TV personality in Ukraine, rose to power and got elected in 2019, and started his power as a newly elected president by cracking down on corruption and ending the military conflict with Russia.

Other speakers during the first virtual address of President Zelenskyy include Candice Bergen, interim leader of the Conservative Party; Jagmeet Singh, leader of the NDP, and the leader of the Bloc Quebecois and Green Party, and George J. Furey, Speaker of the Senate.

President Zelenskyy ended with his message: "I'm grateful to every one of you in the Parliament of Canada that is present here, to every Canadian citizen. I'm very grateful to you, Justin; I'm grateful to the Canadian people. And I am confident that together, we will overcome and will be victorious. Glory to Ukraine. Thank you, Canada."

The chamber roared by standing ovation of the members which lasted more than two minutes.

Places We Go: a live-action animation produced by Fil-Canadian kababayans Places We Go is currently one of the offerings of the Prairies Theatre Exchange, streaming free via PTE website the whole month of March. It is a story of contemporary reality of many children in the Philippines told as a live-action animation produced by FilipinoCanadian artists Hazel Venzon and David Oro under the U N I Together Productions.

Places We Go has been in development since 2013. It started as an oral story originally titled as “Grace.” In 2017, it was renamed The Places We Go and was produced as a live-graphic novel for the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Newly named, Places We Go is facing a new and invigorating stage in production. The creative tandem of Hazel and David explore its new form as a liveaction animation.

Hazel and David welcome you into the world of Grace, a young girl who longs to bring her mother home. With the backdrop of the vibrant Metro Manila, Grace takes us to her grand adventure in the process of making her dream come true.

Inspired by common stories of separation and migration among Filipino families who are in search of greener pastures overseas, both Hazel and David have personal experiences that inspired them to create this film.

“The story is also heavily inspired by my cousin. Without her kind of unfortunate experiences, I wouldn’t understand the depth and weight of family separation and then family reunification and the deep challenges,” shared Hazel.

“My dad went to Saudi Arabia. My mom, brother and I moved here in ’97 but my dad was still in Saudi. Family separation extends not only to being OFWs but even migrating to Canada. The story will resonate to Filipinos who experienced the same,” said David.

David planned to turn the film into a tangible piece of material like a graphic novel book until they got a call from PTE asking if they had an entry for the season.

At that time, they were working on another project about second chances.

“I felt like if that is a theme (we were working on) then I think we should give our play a second chance. And that evolved into this second life in the digital world. Now it's special because it's kind of permanent on the internet now,” David excitedly shared.

More job opportunities in Canada await Filipinos - Bello

Management to decide on the four-day workweek - DOLE

Labor secretary Silvestro Bello III said that more job in Canada will be made available for Filipinos as he is currently in Canada to sign a bilateral labor agreements for jobs in Ontario and Yukon for Filipinos .

Filipinos who have foreign worker visa may also be eligible to a resident visa.

Meanwhile, DOLE announced that Filipino healthcare care workers who served during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic are set to benefit from the German government's COVID care bonus.

Not yet time to drop "mask" mandate - Duque It is not yet time to remove the face mask mandate even as COVID-19 cases in the country are dipping, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in a Laging Handa briefing last March 17.

"I believe it is not yet the time to remove the face mask mandate. We should learn from the experiences of different countries in Europe where they removed their mask mandates," Duque said.

Duque cited European countries Austria, Denmark, Germany and France who after lifting the face mask mandate, have surged with their COVID cases again.

production. David had to put everything on acetate sheets before he could bring the story to life. Later, he realized that he needed powerful computers and printers to help him do the job.

While David explored on stitching together the visuals, Hazel experimented on her character as the eight-year old Grace and the voice of the rest of the characters in the story.

“I'm a trained performer, actress and everything. So, I use all of those techniques, right visualization, then I will find her voice and then who is this one and I'll find her voice and so lots of playful experiments. In terms of writing them, I think it was essential for Grace to learn specific lessons like what I drew up. That wasn't my imagination, but all of them are mine,” shared Hazel.

Asked what their takeaways are on the story and the production…

“The importance of storytelling and the pride that you can take with you like the confidence that you can have to really tell our story without really caring who's going to latch on to it or not, it's really about your own self-expression,” Hazel said.

“You just need to grind it out until the very end, or else it's not going to happen. The execution part is very important, and I would like that as a message to everybody, to any creative Filipino, people of color or a creator out there who wants to make something is to make it and not just think about it. All these times, all these ideas are amazing…until you create it and execute it.

Thirty seconds to midnight PEREZCOPE

SINCE 1947, WHEN THE Science and Security Board (SSB) of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists met for the first time to perform its annual ritual of setting the time on the “Doomsday Clock,” the scientists initially agreed to set the clock to 11:53 PM or seven minutes to midnight. The SSB is a select group of globally recognized leaders with a specific focus on nuclear risk, climate change, and disruptive technologies. They hang the clock on a wall in the Bulletin’s office at the University of Chicago to remind everybody how close we were to the threat of global nuclear war.

Since then, the clock has been set as close or as far as midnight.

In 1972, the clock was set to 11:48 PM or 12 minutes to midnight when the U.S. and the Soviet Union signed the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I) and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

In 1984, the clock was set once again to 11:57 PM when tensions escalated between the U.S. and the Soviet Union when the arms race intensified. The U.S. deployed Pershing II medium-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles in Western Europe.

In 1991, the clock was set to 11:43 PM or 17 minutes to midnight, the earliest setting since its inception, when the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and the collapse of the Soviet Union thereafter.

In January 2015, the clock was set to 11:57 PM or three minutes to midnight, the closest we were to doomsday since 1984. It was due to the modernization of nuclear weapons in the U.S. and Russia, the specter of a new Cold War, the problem of nuclear waste, and the danger of global climate change.

In January 2020, the minute hand was moved 30 seconds forward from two and a half minutes to two minutes before midnight. But the worst has yet to come. "Humanity

continues to face two simultaneous existential dangers — nuclear war and climate change — that are compounded by a threat multiplier, cyber-enabled information warfare, that undercuts society's ability to respond," the SSB said.

Ukraine invasion On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “illegal and dangerous” invasion of Ukraine and placing Russia’s nuclear armaments on high alert, which the SSB considers to be the gravest danger to humanity, has set the Doomsday Clock to 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it ever been to apocalypse.

By threatening to use nuclear weapons or launching a “First Strike” nuclear attack against the U.S. and her NATO allies if war breaks out between Russia and the NATO alliance, it has brought a nightmare scenario to life, which sets the Doomsday Clock to 30 seconds to midnight.

Biden’s mental paralysis But the problem is that President Joe Biden has encouraged Putin – by vowing not to get involved in the Ukraine war -- to flaunt using his nuclear weapons if the U.S. and her NATO allies would send troops to Ukraine. By playing the threat of “World War III,” Putin has disarmed Biden and tied his hands behind his back. Biden, the other day even said, “Don’t kid yourself, but once we enter the war, it will be World War III,” which makes one wonder: “If Russia attacks the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – which would be next after Ukraine -- would America and the NATO countries send their troops to fight the Russians? How about the two non-NATO countries of Moldova and Georgia? The other day, the Moldovan Prime Minister requested joining NATO because they know they’re next on Putin’s crosshairs. Taken aback, Secretary

of State Antony Blinken didn’t respond. He could at least reassure the Moldovan Prime Minister that he’d relay the request.

It would seem that the entire Biden administration – Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, four-star General Mark Milley – had succumbed to a debilitating mental paralysis, unable to act when threatened with nuclear annihilation. But the truth is: America’s leadership’s amnesia has its provenance since Biden hastily withdrew American troops from Afghanistan last year. It gave Putin the go-signal that he could do anything he wanted to and Biden would just play possum, unmindful of whatever the consequence will be. But doesn’t Biden realize that he had just pulled the MAD automechanism?

Now, all Putin has to do is threaten “First Strike” and Biden would just stare blankly at the nuclear football held by his aidede-camp… and do nothing. And suddenly, his semi-senile mind goes into a paralytic state, unable to respond to the nuclear crisis, which he inadvertently and unconsciously abetted by vowing that he would never send the army of the most powerful nuclear power and richest country in history to fight the bankruptcy-bound invading Russians in Ukraine. What a shame!

American history Biden needs to study American history from the time the U.S. entered World War I to the victorious conclusion of World War II. Never in those two world wars did America ever flinch in the face of defeat, only to emerge the victor who would rule in peace and prosperity until… today. Today, the great American nation is facing extinction only because she allowed a mad genius to roll his tanks into Ukraine and laid waste to a beautiful and proud country. Ukraine is bound to lose her sovereignty because America allowed Russian war planes to ravage their land and refused to send NATO warplanes to defend the besieged Ukrainian people who are fleeing -- helplessly and hopelessly – amid the attacking Russian tanks and aerial bombardment.

204NW Kiddie Patrollers Meet MP Kevin Lamoureux

hrough photos shown in his slide presentation, nineyear-old Gab Gonsalves explained the reason why Kiddie Patrol group of 204 Neighbourhood Watch Inc. had to be created. The Kiddie Patrol is composed of young volunteers who walk with their parents during 204NW’s safe walks.

Gab presented for 15 minutes. A few of the photos he showed were those of playgrounds in Winnipeg where drug paraphernalia and broken glasses were found. “Those are places that we, kids, frequently go to, however those places are also the most unsafe,” Gab said while presenting.

“I think that people can learn a lot from young people, from children,” the MP Mr. Kevin Lamoureux said when it was his time to speak in the roundtable discussion. The MP said that the presentation of 204NW Kiddie Patroller sends a

Dozens of people emulated what the kids - Mikayla Redublo, Camilo Redublo, Javier Redublo and Alexis Redublo, have been doing. The story of what they do reached the people of Winnipeg, where the 204 Neighbourhood Watch Inc. volunteers were among those inspired.

In a safe walk at Tyndall Park, the 204NW volunteers joined by

They timed it, with four people shovelling, it took at least 3 minutes to break the solid ice that had enveloped a fire hydrant, before the water outlet was exposed. LEA SALONGA’S DREAM AGAIN TOUR IS BACK IN WINNIPEG

ward winning singer and actress, Lea Salonga is back out on tour for her Dream Again Concert 2022!

Starting April 6th, she will be touring Canada and North America with Winnipeg as the first leg of her tour after two years of not being in the concert scene due to the ongoing pandemic.

To talk about her concert, life during the pandemic and what’s keeping her busy now, The Filipino Journal had a little chat and kamustahan with the award-winning performer.

Thankfully my filming schedule is not heavy. It gives me time to just be a human and play video games and hang out with my daughter and sleep.

Lea is currently in New York filming the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin where she auditioned in September and got the role a week later. The series is set to premier on HBO Max this summer.

FJ: How have you been?

FJ: You are kicking off your LEA: I’ve been well, thank you! concert tour in Winnipeg. How Concert preparations have sort of do you feel about going back to

this city and being able to perform again in a concert?

LEA: I’ve been to Winnipeg enough times that I lost count. It gets really cold there but whatever the weather, I think our experiences in Winnipeg have all been wonderful anyway, regardless of how it is outside. The main thing is, oh my god, it's cold or we have to go underground to get from this building to another building or, you know, that it would get dry. It would feel like dry in a room. So it's like, we're gonna need water to hydrate. I have to really think about my technique and my singing under those conditions. But despite the cold and dry weather, everyone that I've met has just been warm

and friendly and welcoming. And so I think that that is what I can look forward to when I go back.

FJ: Any memories that stand out in one of your concerts here?

LEA: I think it was one time where there was a sports event that was going on. And so I was giving live updates on score. I think there was one guy in the front row that was wearing a jersey and just went with his wife, I think I was giving live sports updates in one Canadian show. (laughs) FJ: What can the fans look forward to in your concert?

LEA: There's a lot of new music!

There's a lot of new music that I have never performed before that I'm going to get to do for the first time and so Winnipeg, because it's the first stop, it's it feels like okay, this is where we're going to figure out if this works. We're trying everything out here. This is our first shot and let's see how everything works. So I think it's just gonna be fun. That’s the fun part.

FJ: Being in the pandemic (still), what would be the extent of audience participation like invitation to go on stage to sing with you?

LEA: We’re not doing that because we're still in COVID. So, Newsflash, do not prepare your vocal cords for A Whole New World, because we're still in a pandemic. And there are things that I have to adapt in the routine of, not just what we do on stage, but also stuff we do offstage, so I need to do my part and keeping people safe and keeping audiences like while still engaged. And whatever regulations the venue has set are things that we're going to have to follow. So yeah, so there will not be an audience invitation.

FJ: What is your message to Winnipeg fans who are not only looking forward to see you but also to be back in a concert event after two years.

LEA: If you bought a ticket to my show, thank you so much, because it means a lot. It means a lot because it means that our musicians get go back on the road. It means that I get to do what I love to do. It means that audiences get to return to venues and watch live performances again and it signals a return to some kind of normal, but a normal in which we are able to do what it is we love.

So I'm happy and grateful that we get to start things off on this Dream Again tour in Winnipeg. And I'm looking forward to seeing everybody there you know. Let's also not forget that we're still in the middle of you know, this very unpredictable and uncertain time. But let's all try to do what we got to do to infuse - to infuse our lives with a little bit of art and joy and happiness and fun.

The heartwarming program is headlined by three of the Network's sought-after stars: Ken Chan as Richard Lim, Kelvin Miranda as Nestor Lorenzo and Bianca Umali as Irene Pacheco.

'Mano Po Legacy: Her Big Boss' tells the story of a headstrong woman who tries to balance her career and her romantic life. Irene (Bianca) has her life planned out. In two years, she will marry her longtime perfect boyfriend Nestor (Kelvin) and move to Australia to join the rest of his family.
