Flora of the Philippines Winter Display on Now at The Leaf Winnipeg, January 23, 2024 – The biomes at The Leaf re-opened this morning after a temporary closure yesterday following the end of the acclaimed Fleurs de Villes VOYAGE show. In less than 24 hours, the Babs Asper Display House was transformed by the Assiniboine Park Conservancy’s horticulture team with a new display inspired by the lush tropical forests that define the breathtaking landscapes of the Philippines. Flora of the Philippines, which runs until March 17, boasts a number of unique display features, including: • Orchid Trees and Pillars – Two orchid “trees” frame the entrance and exit of the display area. Dotted throughout the display are unique pillars constructed out of bamboo sustainably harvested from the Hartley and Heather Richardson Tropical Biome and decorated with orchids. Around 1,200 orchid species are known to grow naturally in the Philippines. • Bromeliad Tree – Bromeliads are a large family of vibrant plants boasting unique foliage and colourful blooms. Most, but not all, bromeliads are epiphytic, which means they do not live in soil, but on trees or rocky surfaces. While they are not endemic to the Philippines, sun-loving bromeliads are well-suited to the country’s tropical climate

and are commonly grown and sold there as ornamental plants. • Living Arches – Four benches in the display area sit beneath beautiful arches covered in earthy moss and decorated with orchids. The arches provide visitors with a decorative and visually appealing rest area where they can relax and take in the beauty of the display. • Discovery Table – An interactive display table features fruit and plant material that is grown in the Philippines like parts of a banana (saging), coconuts (niyog), jackfruit (langka) and mangosteen (manggustin). Visitors are encouraged to take a closer look at the plant material and invited to gently touch and smell the items, while ensuring they remain in the display for the enjoyment of all guests. • Plant material significant to the Philippines will also be highlighted in the Hartley and Heather Richardson Tropical Biome and marked with labels bearing the national flag of the Philippines. Featured plants include breadfruit, crepe jasmine, pineapple, and banyan tree. “The tropical forests of the Philippines support an astounding diversity of plant life and we wanted to create a display that highlights some of those species,” said Gerald Dieleman, Senior Director of Horticulture, Assiniboine Park Conservancy. The Flora of the Philippines display is included with regular Leaf admission. More information can be found at assiniboinepark. ca. The biomes at The Leaf are open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

WINNIPEG SEA BEARS RELEASE 2024 SEASON SCHEDULE

Sea Bears to host two new teams while rivalries renew WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have released the team’s 2024 schedule. The club is slated to start the season on the road before returning to Canada Life Centre for their home opener on May 24th. The 20-game set will give Winnipeg fans their first looks at defending champions Scarborough, as well as Ottawa, two teams that didn’t visit the heart of the country last season. It also features four match-ups each against western conference rivals Saskatchewan and Vancouver. Winnipeg completed the four-game sweep of the Vancouver Bandits in their inaugural season and went 2-1 against the Saskatchewan Rattlers in an intense series that saw the league’s two top scorers go toe-to-toe. The Sea Bears will continue to make their home at Canada Life Centre, where fans can expect the same high-energy atmosphere that made the 2023 season so special. Fans can also look forward to themed games, which will be announced at a later date. Sea Bears Nation will get their last chance to take in a regular season home game July 23 when the team hosts the Calgary Surge at Canada Life Centre. Winnipeg then completes the doubleheader in Calgary before wrapping up the regular season in Edmonton on July 29. The postseason will begin in August with the third and fourth-ranked teams in each conference squaring off in a play-in game. The winners will advance to face the conferences’ second seeds in the quarterfinals. Quarterfinal victors, the Championship Weekend host (Montreal) and the first seed in the west all earn a spot at Championship Weekend, which is comprised

Senate-House Ceasefire Amid Charter Change Debates: A Shift in Focus on National Issues Senators Sonny Angara and Ronald dela Rosa announced a ceasefire between the Senate and the House of Representatives, aiming to de-escalate tensions over Charter change debates. The decision follows discussions with Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, who expressed concerns about the increasingly heated verbal exchanges. Angara, leading the Senate sub-committee on constitutional amendments, stated that the ceasefire aims to improve collaboration while addressing

the proposed Resolution of Both Houses 6, which seeks amendments to certain economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution. Dela Rosa emphasized a shift in focus to pressing national issues, particularly the devastating floods in Mindanao. Senators, including Imee Marcos, Bong Go, and Dela Rosa, pledged support for floodaffected areas. Former President Rodrigo Duterte also supported de-escalation, provided there is no provocation.

Simultaneously, Senate hearings on the People's Initiative signature campaign continue, investigating allegations of bribery and fund misuse. Despite calls to stop the probe, Senator Francis Escudero stressed the importance of transparency. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) cautioned against hasty constitutional amendments, citing the 1987 Constitution's complex history and emphasizing the need for a careful democratic process.

UN Special Rapporteur Urges Abolition of Anticommunist Task Force in the Philippines

U

nited Nations Special Rapporteur (UNSR) Irene Khan has called on the Philippine government to disband the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-Elcac). Following her 10-day visit to assess press freedom, Khan emphasized the outdated nature of the task force, attributing it to endangering the lives of human rights defenders, activists, and journalists through Red-tagging. Red-tagging, defined by the Commission on Human Rights, involves state actors publicly branding individuals as communist affiliates, leading to threats and attacks. Khan recommended abolishing the NTF-Elcac, stating it doesn't align with ongoing peace negotiations and contributes to the vilification of dissenters. She suggested the government adopt a policy denouncing

Winnipeg's Nestaweya River Trail Shuts Down Shortly After Opening

In an unexpected turn of events, the entire stretch of the Nestaweya River Trail has been shut down, just days following its partial opening. The closure encompasses all segments of the trail, including the popular Forks Port Rink, Red River and Assiniboine River sections. The announcement, made on The Forks' official website, extends to the closure of the Winnipeg 150 Winter Park skating rinks and trails, leaving winter sports enthusiasts searching for alternatives. Further information regarding the closures is available on their website. This closure comes amid unseasonably warm weather conditions in Winnipeg, which have persisted, affecting outdoor winter activities across the city.

rights groups, government officials rejected Khan's recommendation, citing strategic victories against communist rebels and the task force's role in promoting good governance.

Mesmerizingly "tour de force play" aided by electronic wizardly and by an electrifying performance of Hazel Venzon By Rod Cantiveros

A

t the beginning of the play, "Everything Has Disappeared", an insatiable expectation I had as I looked at the set on the stage. In my mind, "We will be on an exciting joy ride with this play." I noticed the electronic gadgetry etched prominently on the board. As I settled, my mind was preoccupied with a highlighted narrative: "What would happen if every Filipino person in the world...disappeared?" Seems apocalyptic for the Filipino Diaspora (the dispersion or spread of people from their original homeland), an Armageddon for the Filipinos in every sector of human endeavors in the world, leading to the vast stoppage of human activities which will result in unprecedented universal economic disaster! This emerging fear was conceived and directed by Hazel Venzon and Darren O'Donnell. Two minds created this distinctively "tour de force" play staged in Winnipeg! And as such it is an inspiring theatre experience to be reckoned with. In her one-woman show, Venzon touched on two Filipino (Tagalog) words, "Pakiramdam" (inner perception or feeling). and "kapwa" (being one with the other, merging the "you" and I to "we", and she glossy demonstrated the two words in an interactive moment with the audience, thereby, creating connecting dots between the two vernacular words to the audience. As Venzon pointed out the Philippines

is still a poor country, and millions of Filipino overseas workers are everywhere, in every skill and profession. Finding more financial rewards abroad, the Filipinos are dispersed to the North to South and West to East of the world, working hard to help their loved ones in the Philippines to survive the severity of its dysfunctional governance. The St. Edward Catholic Church's choir supplemented the nationalistic fervor for the play, giving us that pride of being a Filipino in Winnipeg, part and parcel of the Filipino diaspora. This "touchy play" was the recipient of the National Art Centre's prestigious National Creation Fund and was fully developed with the support of the artists at Kampnagel (Humburg, Germany) and Theatre Rosendal (Trondheim, Norway). And the artists who helped make this play memorable, and include David Oro, illustrator; Erik Mana, mentalist/ illusionist; potatoCakes_digital; Simon Campana, sound composer; Dasha Plett, sound designer; Brenda Mclean, costume designer; Wei Qing Tan, stage manager, Nera Nalam, assistant director; Isabel Ahat and Ryan Lewis, producers, and James Thurmeier, production manager and technical director. Way to go for another "delectable play", Hazel Venzon and Darren O'Donnell! PKF Lawyers are the proud to support this production at the Prairie Theatre Exchange. more photos on page 9 ►

Looming dark cloud over the Marcos and Duterte's political in-fighting 2024 Economy may be imperiled, making investors nervous, due to Marcos-Duterte's bombshell.

I

n the early month of the second year term of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as the president of the Philippines, there was a surprising verbal tussle started by the immediate President Rodrigo Duterte, accusing BBM (Bongbong Marcos) of an alleged drug addict and calling the current president to resign. Duterte, known as a populist and the non-flying-state-visitpresident during his term, singled out that BBM's name is included in the watch list of drug addicts. Even Duterte scaled the record that BBM went to Germany for treatment before the 2022 election. President Marcos Jr. denied all the accusations, saying that Duterte is suffering from the side effects of "fentanyl": "He has been taking this drug for a very long time now. I hope his doctors take care of him." Duterte retorted, saying " Mine is prescribed by the doctors, but his drugs are not." The feud between two famous family dynasties has erred one government department the country's

economy in 2024 will be affected. One has to remember that Duterte valued the political connection with the former Dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the father of the current president, who declared Martial Law to extend his political career and then, granted the final resting place of the late dictator to be buried in the "Libingan ng mga Bayani". There it goes with the common adage in politics: 'There is no permanent friend, no permanent enemy in politics, only personal interest." As former President Duterter and the current Philippine President

Marcos Jr. are at odds with each other, the nation is still suffering from continuing tentacles of corruption, making the country an importer of basic needs like rice, sugar, garlic, onions, and meat. And wondering why such a country rich in natural resources is still impoverished. Meanwhile, BBM announced the launching of "Bagong Pilipinas" as the current administration's brand of governance and leadership that strives to ignite hope and inspire participation in building a better Philippines through collective action, transcending political, religious, and socio-economic differences. The shade of Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. "New Society"; and how the surging "People's Initiative" by some lawmakers with the signature campaign by the people to re-write the constitution, seems like "People's Power".

NICE, FRANCE - The Old Town by Gem and Lita Anis

O

ur European itinerary says: Depart Lourdes, France and drive to beautiful French Riviera, passing through many beautiful cities in the Mediterranean Sea and drive along the scenic seacoast viewing Monte Carlo and the Principality of Monaco, then arrive Nice (pronounced "neece" in English), take a stroll along the Promenade Des Anglais, climb the Castle Hill and explore the Old Town. Nicknamed "la belle" or "the beautiful" because of its stunning natural beauty, Nice is the fifth largest city in France, located on the French Riviera at the southeastern coast of France along the Mediterranean Sea at the foot of the French Alps. Famous French painters Matisse and Chagall found inspiration in Nice with its seaside splendour and palm-fringed cityscape. Nice is a very walkable tourist spot - most attractions can be reached within walking distances. Promenade Des Anglais is the most famous street that travels along the Mediterranean waterfront stretching for seven (7) kms. (4.5 miles) that provides an uninterrupted view of the cerulean blue waters and neat rows

of palm trees. The Promenade, La Prom for short, is not only popular for walking but also for sports. You see bicyclists. skateboarders, in-line skaters, and joggers. Also baby-strollers and families. La Prom was the start and finish location of the first two stages of the 2020 Tour de France. Along the seafront you'll see one of Nice's most unusual architectural features - a row of low white buildings onced used by fishermen and now a mix of galleries and ethnic restaurants combining local culture and gastronomy. From the Promenade you can reach the Castle Hill and enter the Old Town of Nice. The Old Town of Nice (Vieille Ville), seemingly laid-back, possesses an old-world charm with its maze of narrow medieval streets and narrow alleyways, apartment structures strewn with drying laundry, locally-owned cafes, small restaurants, epiceries, boulangeries, patisseries, and ice cream parlours. The cobblestoned-streets also contain many 17th century Italianate churches . Also here are the Palais Lascaris, used to be a 17th-century aristocratic building and currently, a musical instrument museum; the ornate

On our way to Monaco, our tourist bus driver showed us the cliff of the winding road where the deadly car accident happened to Hollywood actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, the wife of Prince Ranier III of the royal family, House of Grimaldi. Au revoir.
