Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg Marks 45 Years

O

ne of the oldest senior organizations in Western Canada, the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg, recently celebrated its 45th anniversary with a dinner dance at the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg Cultural Centre in Euclid.

Led by Leonardo Isla, the current president, the anniversary celebration was graced by former MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis, a long-time friend and supporter of the FSGW, who delivered a poignant speech weaving together English and Filipino, reflecting on the cherished history of Filipino seniors in Winnipeg.

The roots of this formidable organization trace back to the summer of 1977 when the 1st Filipino Provincial Conference convened at the University of Winnipeg. During a pivotal plenary session, a motion surfaced to organize the burgeoning community of Filipino seniors in response to the continuous influx of professionals like doctors, nurses, teachers, and garment workers. The motion found favor, leading to the official founding of the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg a few months later.

On March 5, 1978, Antonio Navasca, Conrad Santos, Eustaquio Urrutia, and Cris Aglugub wrote a new constitution. It was adopted, and this led to an election when Eustaquio Urrutia was voted as the 1st president.

The following presidents took the helm of leadership since the presidency of Eustaquio Urrutia, and these include Mamuel Quioque, Sr., Cosme Luna, Gonzalo Teodoro, Francis Dumaua, Mansano, Ben Arroz, Aida Champagne, Rod Domingo, and the current, Leonardo Isla.

The journey has been one of adaptability and evolution. A shift in membership qualifications occurred, setting the age requirement at 30 and above, with a nominal $5 membership fee. Aida Champagne, former president and current finance officer, emphasizes fresh perspectives and community engagement, stating, "We need young blood with vibrant ideas and who are eager to do some community volunteerism."

A cornerstone achievement for the FSGW was acquiring its current building in 1987. However, with the passage of time, the structure requires attention and care.

Acknowledging the financial constraints, the current administration and devoted officers and members are embarking on fundraising initiatives to facilitate much-needed renovations.

The current officers of the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg include Leonardo "Jun" Isla, president; Kelly Legaspi, secretary; Alan Basco, maintenance & facility coordinator; Angelica Ilagan, program coordinator; and board members are Bobbit Nepomuceno, Alex Ramos, Queenie Mante, and Fred Ilagan.

"Philippine Caregiver Noralyn Babadilla Released

he last Filipino hostage held by Hamas has been released, according to an announcement by President Marcos. Noralyn Babadilla, a caregiver, was taken captive for 53 days following the October 7 attack by the Palestinian militant group on Israel. Her partner, Gideon Babani, was tragically murdered during the same incident.

President Marcos expressed relief at Babadilla's safe return and confirmed that all Filipino nationals affected by the Hamas attack have been accounted for.

Babadilla is currently undergoing medical evaluation at Tel HaShomer Hospital in Israel to ensure her wellbeing. President Marcos commended Israeli authorities for facilitating her release and extended gratitude to the governments of Egypt and Qatar for their crucial role in the process.

The Department of Migrant Workers assured Babadilla of full support and assistance upon her return to the Philippines. The Department of Foreign Affairs acknowledged and appreciated the mediation efforts of the State of Qatar, along with the support from Egypt, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other international organizations.

In addition to Babadilla, Jimmy Pacheco was also mentioned as having been previously released. Both individuals will receive support from the Israeli government for victims of terror. Meanwhile, 36 more overseas Filipino workers are set to return from Israel, consisting of 32 caregivers and four hotel workers arriving on Philippine Airlines flight PR 731 at 6:30 p.m.

agayan de Oro 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez advised government officials and consumer advocates to prioritize lowering electricity prices instead of advocating for the split of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) franchise area. Rodriguez emphasized the importance of informed discussions, urging lawmakers to enlighten the public about power distribution issues and avoid confusion.

The key concern revolves around Meralco's weighted average cost of capital (WACC). Rodriguez suggested that if WACC is the problem, the logical solution should be a thorough review and completion of the rate reset process by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). The call comes in response to concerns raised by Santa Rosa City Representative Dan Fernandez, who highlighted Meralco's high WACC rate of 14.97%, suggesting it should be 9.23% based on current computations.

Rodriguez challenged advocates of a franchise split to identify responsible parties for ensuring a sufficient power supply for households and the nation's growing economy. He stressed the need to prioritize the interests of the Filipino people over specific interests.

As discussions unfold, Rodriguez encourages a comprehensive examination of the WACC issue and a commitment to finding solutions that benefit the public.

Meralco, denying accusations of monopolism, counters claims of exclusive control over Calabarzon and Pampanga's power supply. Critics argue that such claims divert focus from the crucial goal of lowering power costs.

n a sudden decision, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has canceled his trip to the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. The President cited "important developments" in the hostage situation involving 17 Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea as the reason for his abrupt withdrawal.

"In light of important developments in the hostage situation involving 17 Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea, I have made the decision not to attend COP28 in Dubai tomorrow," Marcos stated on Thursday. He revealed plans to convene a meeting to dispatch a high-level delegation to Tehran, Iran, aiming to provide necessary assistance to the seafarers.

The Department of Foreign Affairs had previously confirmed the seizure of a cargo ship with Filipino seafarers

by Yemen's Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. Marcos entrusted Environment Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, already in Dubai, to lead the COP28 delegation and articulate the country's statement on his behalf.

Marcos was scheduled to depart Manila on the morning of November 30, with plans to arrive in Dubai later in the afternoon. His absence marks a change in his international travel plans, being the 11th international trip for the year and the 17th since taking office in mid-2022.

The COP28 summit, set to run from November 30 to December 12 in Expo City, Dubai, gathers over 70,000 participants, including foreign leaders. The annual event aims to address climate promises made by countries in previous years, with a focus this year on discussions about a faster transition to renewable energy and climate financing.

he Vickar Ford Showroom at 2000 Main Street was at full capacity on Saturday, November 18th - not with the expected shiny new vehicles for sale, but rather with bright-eyed attendees celebrating the lively fundraising event Philippine Fiesta for Smiles and Sight 2023.

Attendees were welcomed into a Pahiyas-themed space adorned with bandaritas, colourful arches and coconut trees made of balloons, and the famous Jeepney Vickar. Guests were treated with Philippine food, desserts and beverages, and fabulous dance music. For those with a sweet tooth or wanting to treat their loved

ones, a small donation rewarded them with turon, hot chocolate, homemade baking, jewelry or alcoholic refreshments. Emcees for the evening were Dr. Tom Colina, Dr. Tricia Magsino Barnabé and Mervin Sison.

Highlights of the evening included the experience of a fast-paced live auction, led by Open Lane’s Greg Maidment, in which guests bid on big ticket items like Winnipeg Jets tickets and signed jerseys. Extra entertainment was provided by singers who accepted proposals from the karaoke auction, and of course there was no lack of excitement from much anticipated door prize raffles, silent

auction raffles and the 50/50 draw.

Proceeds from this event will support the Smiles and Sight Philippines Mission this winter in February 2024, in which volunteers will provide free dental, vision, and optical services to poverty-stricken children and families in two mission sites in the Philippines. The first mission site will be in a village in the middle of Quezon City slums and second mission site will be in the community of Pagbilao in Quezon province - both sites are villages established by the charity organization ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor). BASTA!, meaning “...it just is” in Filipino, represents the intricate simplicity of Filipino cuisine, a significant addition to Winnipeg's diverse culinary offerings.

BASTA! is not just a restaurant; it's a cultural homage to the Filipino community's rich history in Winnipeg, dating back to the 1960s. This community has woven its culinary traditions, influenced by Chinese, Spanish, Malay, and American flavors, into the fabric of the city.

BASTA! aims to celebrate this blend of cultures through its innovative menu.

There are now almost a million Filipino-Canadians living across the country. Winnipeg is home to the third largest number of Filipinos. As Filipino-Canadians, we follow in the footsteps of many heroes who sacrificed for others and saved lives. Giving is one of the ways we celebrate our culture and heritage.

Whenever we are needed, we show up and give. As part of Filipino culture, we have the term "Bayanihan", which derives from the word bayan, meaning a town, nation, or community. The term "bayanihan" refers to a spirit of unity and cooperation within the community.

It is important to us that no one is left behind in our community.

It is our goal to make sure that everyone receives the medical care they need. Life can change in seconds, and you or someone you love may need blood urgently.

Blood is a critical part of everyday medical care. There is no substitute for donated blood.

Making all the difference is in our blood. Not only does 204 Neighborhood Watch make communities safer, but it also

contributes to Canada's Lifeline.

Weekly patrols are conducted by the volunteer group to ensure the safety of communities. Through the Partner's for Life program, they also encourage communities to donate blood.

Leila and her group advocate among the Filipino Community for blood donations, knowing that the blood registry needs diverse donors.

Approximately 30 appointments were filled at their November blood drive.

The organization's leader Leila Castro emphasized that "engaging communities will help us create a paradigm shift in the Filipino and immigrant communities about the culture of habitual blood donation."

On December 15, the group will join Sean Dilworth, host of the radio program The Mark and Dilly show. This will be a recruitment and swabbing event at the Garden City Shopping Centre between 10am and 9pm.

Winnipeg Jets host second annual South Asian Heritage Night presented by Canada Life on December 16 Amber Trails School choir to make pro sporting history with Punjabi bilingual version of O Canada

T

he Winnipeg Jets are gearing up for their second annual South Asian Heritage Night presented by Canada Life on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 6 p.m. when they go head-to-head against the Colorado Avalanche. The game celebrates Manitoba’s vibrant South Asian community with the incorporation of food, music, dancing and art.

Marking a historic moment in both NHL and professional sports history, the Amber Trails School choir, predominantly comprised of students of South Asian descent, will perform the American national anthem, as well as a Punjabi and English version of O Canada. Their performance will be the first time the Canadian national anthem will be sung in Punjabi at a major professional sporting event.

Punjabi has recently become Canada's third most spoken language behind the two official languages.

Pre-game entertainment will include the music of many regions influenced by South Asian culture, spun by DJs of South Asian heritage: DJ Hira representing Punjabi music, DJ General B representing the West Indian community, and DJ Nish focusing on Bollywood-style music.

The Winnipeg Punjabi Arts Academy will present dance and lively drum/ dhol performances pre-game on the concourse with the Indian School of Dance delivering a special performance in the bowl during intermission.

Canada Life Centre Executive Chef Richard Duncan has collaborated with Chef Vishwajit Bhati, originally from and culinarily trained in India, to offer South Asian features. They will include traditional butter chicken and

saag paneer bowls, tandoori chicken pizza, and sweet treat gulab jamun at various concession locations.

The game will once again honour individuals of South Asian descent who are positively impacting sport and the community. They include: • Dampy Brar – a former professional hockey player who has played in the WCHL, IHL and ECHL, and who was honoured with the 2020 Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award for his work in growing the game through Apna Hockey; • Randeep Sidhu-Saini – founder and co-chair of Punjabi Community Health Services Manitoba, an organization established in 2022 to support the health, social and settlement needs of South Asian communities, inclusive of mental health and addictions support – and which is the recipient organization of the South Asian Heritage Night fundraising efforts; • Reetu Chahal – a Winnipeg-born Special Olympian and multi-medal winner in powerlifting, most recently winning three bronze medals at this summer’s World Special Olympic Games in Berlin; • Vivek Bhangria – a Winnipegborn Canadian World Dwarf athlete who earlier this year competed as part of Team Canada in his fourth World Dwarf Games in Australia; and • Armaan Dhillon – a Winnipegborn Manitoba Female High School Provincial Golf Champion, currently a member of the University of Victoria Golf Team who has competed all over North America.

heritage of the South Asian community and their significant contribution to hockey, the Winnipeg Jets will bring elements of the "We Are Hockey" exhibit to Canada Life Centre for the South Asian Heritage game. Set to open at hockey for all centre Dec. 6, the exhibit centres on the experiences of people of colour and challenges the linear meaning of “Hockey as Canada’s national sport.” The exhibit was curated by Dr. Satwinder Kaur Bains of the South Asian Studies Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley.

As part of True North’s efforts to grow the game at a grassroots level, a collaboration with Apna Hockey launched the inaugural Apna/Jets Bauer First Shift program. The six-week introduction to hockey has provided an opportunity for more than 120 kids, mostly from the South Asian community, to be outfitted with full hockey equipment and learn from Apna Hockey instructors. PCCM's Silver Jubilee Celebration: Honoring Legacy, Embracing the Future

With the new chapter and vision for PCCM, the red carpet celebration exudes hope amidst the pomp, glam, and food galore!

A

s guests walked on the red carpet at the entrance of the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba's multi-purpose hall, an air of formality ensued as they entered the hall lavishly decorated with silver linings, giving an aura of a five-star event place. A lighted number 25 on the floor is the right place where the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) would celebrate its 25 years of foundation by honoring the founders, funders, and former presidents.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the inspiring speech of Mr. Larry Vickar, CEO and president of Vickar Automotive Group, a philanthropist, and a longstanding major donor to PCCM. Vickar emphasized the need for a collective effort, involving diverse voices from the Filipino community, both longstanding and recent immigrants, to shape the future of PCCM in its new chapter and vision.

In his speech, he said: "The entire community, every Manitoba citizen of Filipino ancestry, has as his or her duty and right to expect this pulse of the community to be vibrant in so many ways. To enable this, it will require a "collective act of will" which must be obtained involving a consensus of input from the community, inclusiveness of all ages,from all walks of life.

The celebration took a nostalgic turn with video messages from former presidents, each sharing their vision for PCCM. President Virgie Gayot and her board of directors then presented plaques of recognition to past presidents and board members for their pivotal roles in shaping PCCM. A touching tribute in the form of a song by Dr. Tricia Magsino-Barnabe followed, honoring the legacy of past presidents: Resty Taruc (2002-03), Dr. Romy Magsino (2004-05), Rosalinda Natividad Cantiveros (2006-07), Dr. Rey Pagtakhan (2008) Rod Escobar Cantiveros (2009-10). THE "WAILING WALL", Old City of Jerusalem, Israel

A

pilgrimage to the Holy Land is incomplete without a religious visit to the "Western Wall", also called the "Wailing Wall", a place of prayer sacred to the Jewish people located at a hill called the 'Temple Mount' in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Crowning the Temple Mount is the gleaming golden-capped Dome of the Rock, the spot from which Prophet Mohammed is said to have visited Jerusalem during his Night Journey and from which he later ascended to heaven. Temple Mount is one of the planet's most hallowed sites for thousand years; it is sacred to three great religions, Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The Temple Mount is surrounded by retaining walls, including the Western Wall, originally built by King Herod the Great.

Over 2,000 years old dating from about 2nd century BCE, the term "Wailing Wall" came into use as it described the Jews who wept at the site over the past destruction of their temples. The Western Wall is a limestone wall measuring about

cap called "yamakah" or "kippa" or a paper "yarmulke" provided free at the entrance to use while you are near the sacred wall. Women are not required to cover their heads but must dress modestly, means, shoulder and legs covered. There are dark-coloured shawls available in a basket at the entrance to wrap around the arms and over the legs.

Pope John Paul II on his historic March, 2000 five-day visit to Israel placed a letter into the crevices of the wall in which he prayed for forgiveness for the actions against the Jews in the past apologising for the church's sins against the Jews; thus becoming the first pope to visit the Wailing Wall. These prayers and missives/notes are then collected and removed from the wall cracks by a rabbi twice a year during Passover and Rosh Hashanah, then buries

488 metres long and about 40 metres high. The wall consists of forty-five (45) stone courses (rows) , of these, 28 are above ground and 17 are underground. The Jews for thousand years have constructed their temples facing west in order to pray towards the Wailing Wall.

Praying at the wall by writing missives and prayers (known as "kvitlah" in Jewish) on scraps of paper and placing them between the cracks of the ancient stones as we had done during our visit is a very unique personal experience.

It is believed that every written prayer at the wall becomes an eternal prayer.

Other worshippers pray aloud.
