It's time for tea, Victorian-style for Roselyn Advincula and joining her family were the Tanner and Miarial families at Fort La Rein Museum in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. The trip to the museum was a learning experience as a glimpse into early settlers, traditions and way of life in Canada with amazing similarities to the life of new Canadians. They finished off the museum adventure with a traditional tea party of baked goods, coffee, hot chocolate and tea. The group took advantage of the recently announced Travel Rewards Incentive Program (TRIP) by the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce and Travel Manitoba.

Justin Trudeau and the minority Liberal government called an early federal election last week and Canadians will be voting on Monday, September 20.

In the next five weeks of campaigning, Canadians will hear from federal leaders Justin Trudeau (Liberal), Erin O'Toole (Conservatives), and Jagmeet Singh (NDP) from the three main Canadian political parties.

Elections Canada is expected to make announcements on a series of new public health measures for a safe voting experience amid the COVID19 pandemic.

Is Your Child Ready for School?

T

he past year and a half of school have been such a tumultuous ride. From school closures to virtual classes to partial reopening, it seems as if our children have experienced every out-of-the-norm scenario we could come up with. And although the goal was to keep them safe, children’s development took a significant hit. We’ve seen more significant emotional distress, poorer health choices, regression in cognitive momentum, and decreased social skills. So, as the new school year approaches, it is more important than ever to ensure that they are prepared for school in ways that cover all developmental areas.

The idea of “school readiness” has always been mostly referenced when related to cognitive skills needed for school. However, many studies have found that teachers aren’t as concerned with these things and feel that it’s more important that students function in the classroom by being confident, independent,

and able to self-regulate.

To prepare for this, it’s crucial that parents implement strategies now to give their children a jump start before heading back to school.

Physical: While we have focused on handwashing and minimizing germs, many other healthy habits went out the door. Sleep, nutrition, and physical activity were all put on the back burner. But for children to be successful in school, parents need to begin implementing healthy habits again, such as early bedtimes, nutritious meals, and activities.

Intellectual: The combination of the summer slide and the COVID slide has been detrimental and contributed to even more learning loss. And although everyone feels a rush to make up for this, it’s important to ease back into learning and avoid the “cognitive cram.”

Emotional: With all the unsureness, children have experienced anything from anxiety to depression to lack of motivation, among many other emotions. The constant emotional

shifts have left everyone feeling uneasy, including parents.

Therefore, it’s so important for parents to role model appropriate reactions.

Social: In the beginning, social interactions came to a complete halt. And even when some social interactions began again, they were very different than before. It seems as if no one has been sure of what is and isn’t appropriate, so social anxiety began setting in Children need a refresher course on social skills to get them feeling more secure again.

Finding fun, creative ways to get children back on track and ready for school will help them feel more confident again. The SKILLZ Child Development Centers’ approach is a whole-child focus through fun and developmentally appropriate classes.

The goal is skill development physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. In this program, children are exposed to physical training, cutting-edge brain training, a supportive environment, and age-appropriate social interactions.

All these things, combined in one class, provide the most benefit to children in their development. This is especially effective for reigniting the learning process To do this, ample preparation is key, and we should approach our children’s development with a flexible and building relationships again.

MLA Jon Reyes receives Quincentennial Award The Philippines is celebrating its Quincentennial celebration with three historical events; namely, 500th Anniversary of the introduction of Christianity in the Philip; 500th Anniversary of the Philippine part in the 1st Circumnavigation of the world; and the 500th Anniversary of the Victory at Mactan when Lapulapu won the Battle of Mactan where Fernando Magallanes met his death.

With the theme of "Victory and Humanit", the National Quincentennial Committee was created when President Rodrigo Roa Duterte signed Executive Order 103 on Jan. 28, 2019, to prepare for the important historical celebration of the three major events in 2021.

MLA Jon Reyes, Minister of Economic Development and Jobs, received the award from Consul General Orontes V. Castro at the Legislature witnessed by Maria Rosini Alevero, Senior Trade Commissioner and Honorary Consul Ronald Opina of Winnipeg.

Quincentennial Award is given to outstanding Filipinos in the Philippines and abroad.

Recently during the Consular Outreach Program by the Toronto Consulate General of the Philippines, Consul General Orontes V. Castro had awarded the "Quincentennial Award" to MLA Jon Reyes, Minister of Economic Development and Jobs.

The Vaccine Implementation Task Force would like to recognize and thank the staff and volunteers who have dedicated their time to support the vaccine rollout at this location, as well as the City of Winnipeg and Winnipeg Soccer Federation for their support of the site. Staff will continue to have the option to work at the RBC site or other immunization clinics.

Eligibility Eligibility was expanded this week to include anyone born on or before Dec. 31, 2009. The date of their second appointment must be at least 28 days after the first. Vaccine Lottery The first seven winners of the Vax to Win Lottery were announced Tuesday, Aug. 17. The 10 youth

Youth Immunization The youth immunization catch-up program is now taking appointments for immunizations such as HPV, hepatitis B, meningococcal disease and tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.

Appointments can be made at many provincial vaccine sites online or by contacting the vaccine call centre (toll-free) at 1-844-MAN-VACC (1-844-626-8222).

Vaccine Administration, Supply and Distribution A total of 1,865,774 doses of vaccine have been administered in Manitoba.

EXPLORING MANITOBA ONE HOTEL, ONE ATTRACTION AT A TIME Manitobans answered the call earlier this month by booking staycations and visiting star attractions throughout the province to help boost the local tourism market.

The Tourism Rebate Incentive Program (TRIP) rewarded Manitobans for their effort and earned up to $150 in rebates with one-night stays and hotel packages at popular Manitoba hotels. It also included a 50% rebate on admission to over 30 Star Attractions in Manitoba.

Due to the popularity of the TRIP rewards, the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce is considering bringing back the popular program in time for the September Long Weekend.

Folklorama Fusion featured three evenings of spectacular performances by many cultural associations and dance groups that normally come together every August for a two-week cultural event. Due to the pandemic and easing of public health orders, performances were able to happen but reduced indoor gatherings limited the opportunity for a full fledged Folklorma pavilion experience that many of us are used to. Instead, performances were streamed live from the Burton Cummings Theatre on Folklorama's YouTube channel.

O

lympic Gold Medallist Desiree Scott made an appearance at a recent Valour FC game sporting her Olympic gold medal. Team Canada defeated Team Sweden in a heart-pounding final with Team Canada winning in penalty kicks at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Airon Recuenco had the ultimate meet and greet with Scott and was excited to hold a gold medal in his hands.

Scott, as a local Winnipeg used the opportunity to showcase the medal and more importantly, inspire the next generation of soccer players.

he undefeated American champion Errol Spence Jr. was forced to pull out from his fight with Manny Pacquiao due to an unexpected injury.

As the replacement to save the August 21, 2021 card, Yordenis Ugas was brought in. He holds the "super" WBA welterweight crown Pacquiao used to own.

The 5-foot-9 Cuban, formerly the "regular" WBA champion, was elevated to super status when Pacquiao was declared "champion in recess" due to inactivity.

In an article posted on Yahoo! Sports, Pacquiao said “We will fight for the title. That is the proper way a champion is crowned. That is not how you become a champion. You earn it by winning it inside the ring.”

To avoid conflict spillover amidst the Afghan war, PNP heightens Mindanao security

Police are maintaining the peace and security situation in Mindanao as they look to avoid a spillover of the civil unrest in Afghanistan. The

PNP would stay alert to prevent similar incidents in Mindanao, a region rocked by insurgency and separatist movements, Eleazar added.

Earlier, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reminded Filipinos still in Afghanistan to coordinate with the foreign service as Alert Level 4 remains in the Middle Eastern country.

Mandatory repatriation for all Filipinos in the area is in place. There are still 132 Filipinos in Afghanistan according to the latest DFA estimates.

Senators grill DOH, DBM over overpriced face masks, shields

H

ealth and Budget officials put through the wringer over the highly-priced face masks and face shields flagged by Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon and Senator Imee Marcos from their Commission on Audit annual report in 2020. Marcos questioned why the Department of Health (DOH) suddenly transferred P42.4 billion to the Department of Budget and Management-Procurement Service (DBM-PS) even though she claimed that the Health officials are still capable of holding several procurement biddings on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing. Followed by

Senator Panfilo Lacson questioned the DOH and the DBM-PS over their procurement of expensive laboratory equipment necessary for COVID-19 testing when there is a different brand used by the private sector which is available at a lower price In May 2020. Senator Risa Hontiveros also claimed that the DBM-PS bought overpriced China-made personal protective equipment (PPE) In September 2020.

When will the anti-vaxxers ever stop?

A

new term has emerged in the dictionary: anti-vaxxer. It refers to people who disagree with the use of vaccines for various reasons. While its purpose is to prevent people from contracting the deadly COVID-19 virus, there is a group of people who wouldn’t take it because it infringes on their god-given freedom. They love their freedom so much that any move to get them vaccinated is rejected. But little do they know that vaccines are one of the safest and most effective health interventions for infectious diseases. Just shows their narrowminded outlook on what freedom is.

Today, anti-vaxxers represent a minority of people – those who believe vaccines are unsafe and infringe on their human rights. But with the advent of the Internet and social media platforms, the movement has spread quickly and massively.

According to a recent report, around 31 million people follow anti-vaccine groups on Facebook.

People hold these views for a variety of reasons, which may originate from misinformation on social media sites. Vaccines have been instrumental in the eradication and control of many formerly devastating illnesses, such as polio.

Loyalty test Anti-vaxx sentiments are high among conservatives, evangelicals, and rural Americans, which are the traditional pro-Trump Americans. They believe that vaccine refusal is a statement of identity and a test of loyalty to Trump. But wait a minute! Didn’t they know that Donald and Melania Trump were vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine at the White House in January?

Resistance is high in red states where pro-Trump legislatures enacted ambitious protections for people who refuse vaccines. They have forbidden business owners from asking for proof of vaccination from customers. They required cruise lines, sports stadiums, and bars to serve the unvaccinated. In Montana, they have even forbidden hospitals to require health-care workers to get vaccinated. It’s no wonder that the Delta variant continues to pose danger to the unvaccinated, which according to CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky accounts for 99.5% of the people who died from COVID-19 over the past six months.

This anti-vaxx resistance exacts a harsh cost from Trump loyalists.

As these Trump loyalists harm themselves and expose everybody else to the COVID pandemic, right-wing publications have run articles explaining the recalcitrance of the unvaccinated, which makes one wonder, what’s more important than preventing the spread of COVID-19 and killing Americans?

A case in point was what happened to Dick Farrel, a longtime conservative radio host and an ardent Trump supporter. Based in West Palm Beach, Florida, Farrel was a vocal opponent of the coronavirus vaccine and vehement critic of Dr. Anthony Fauci. He went full blast espousing unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about election fraud earlier this year and questioned the efficacy of coronavirus vaccines developed during the Trump administration.

After calling Fauci a “powertripping lying freak” and urging people not to get vaccinated as recently as June, Farrel changed his tune after contracting the virus himself. He was hospitalized about three weeks ago.

“COVID took one of my best friends!” his friend Amy Leigh Hair wrote on Facebook. “He is the reason I took the shot! He texted me and told me to ‘Get it’; He told me that this virus is no joke and he said: ‘I wish I had gotten it!'” Too late. He died Aug. 4 of complications from COVID-19. He was 65.

Introducing The New Wave

hen fellow New Wave music enthusiasts ask me what for me may be regarded as the first New Waveclassifiable songs based on sound or musicality, I often cite Sparks' "Fa La Fa Lee" (from the band's debut album, 1971's Halfnelson) and Roxy Music's "Virginia Plain" (1972, Roxy Music). Albeit both these may be more aptly described as Art Rock or Art Pop, they still swim within the same sonic spectrum.

H o w e v e r, recently, while exploring the archives of the '60s, looking for bands whose music falls under Sunshine Pop, Psychedelic Pop/ Rock, and Bubblegum Pop, I discovered this band named The New Wave. After

listening to its one-and-only, selftitled album, released in 1967, I was pleasantly surprised how New Wave / Indie Pop-sounding its songs were--the plucked guitars, oboe, harpsichord, strings, echo-laden vocals, and sugary melodies.

Formed in 1967, in Los Angeles, California, United States, The New Wave consisted of Reid King and

Thom Andriola. The duo released only one album. Their music may not be proper New Wave--instead Sunshine Pop--but it definitely predated the style that evolved in the couple of decades that followed.

I was able to get in touch with The New Wave's guitar player / songwriter Reid King, and he confirmed with me that his use of the word New Wave for the name of his band was inspired by his goal to incorporate '50s/'60s French New Wave cinema and soundtracks into the context of Pop music during the time. This means that his musical vision predated the New Wave music genre that emerged in the late '70s, which was often attributed to '70s Punk Rock.

Thus, King's concept and The New Wave's music is definitely an even earlier root of what is known now as New Wave music.

Recommended tracks are "The Shade of the Sun," "Little Dreams," "Walkin' On down the Streets," "Shadows of Good Bye," and "The Evening Mist - A Morning Dew." from page 12

Truax also responded to Larry Cosme, president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, who said, "Forcing people to undertake a medical procedure is not the American way and is a clear civil rights violation no matter how proponents may seek to justify it." Truax said, "Anyone over the age of six who thinks about it for five seconds can tell you that what Cosme said is obviously false. Every school district in every state in America requires children to be vaccinated to attend public schools. But there is no question that states and school districts have the legal authority to demand that school children be vaccinated. So no, mandatory vaccinations are not a 'civil rights violation.'” Touché.

Contrary to what anti-vaxxers claim, Truax wrote, “Vaccines work.” He was clearly fed up with anti-vaxxers who were keeping other Americans from getting back to normal.

"Normal life is about six weeks away, and it will be perpetually six weeks away until we find a way to deal with the anti-vaxxers," Truax wrote. "By all means, continue the outreach. Persuade them to get their shots. But I'm not interested in the 'reasons' anti-vaxxers don't 'believe' in vaccinations. It's all herp derp.

All I'm interested in is results."

Truax concluded his article by lamenting that "normal life" would remain elusive in the U.S. as long as Americans are buying into the "herp derp" promoted by anti-vaxxers. When will the anti-vaxxers ever stop?

Zach Ignacio: Running in Her Blood and through Her Veins

I

n the 1990s, the band Alamid was one of the forerunners of Philippine Alternative Rock music, with the late Gary Ignacio as frontman and eventually his younger brother Gail as drummer. After the heyday of their band, performing countless concerts locally and abroad and releasing albums and chart-topping singles including "Your Love" and "Sama-sama," Gail and his family ultimately decided to immigrate to Winnipeg in the early 2010s. However, Gail's musical journey did not end there. Once settled, he embarked on drumming for many local Filipino-Canadian bands as well as producing shows that featured both Philippine imports

and Winnipeg's own talents.

However, one of Gail's greatest achievements, both as a seasoned musician and as a doting parent, was his having bequeathed to one of his children his love for music and performing. And not just that. His talented daughter who developed a knack for singing and performing since she was five years old, obviously taking after her late uncle and her dad, has just signed a recording contract with Star Music.

Will soon be releasing her first single, titled "Dáhan-dáhan," the personable budding artist is also hoping to ultimately work on her debut full-length record--of not only R-n-B-stylized renditions

It's time for tea, Victorian-style for Roselyn Advincula and joining her family were the Tanner and Miarial families at Fort La Rein Museum in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. The trip to the museum was a learning experience as a glimpse into early settlers, traditions and way of life in Canada with amazing similarities to the life of new Canadians. They finished off the museum adventure with a traditional tea party of baked goods, coffee, hot chocolate and tea. The group took advantage of the recently announced Travel Rewards Incentive Program (TRIP) by the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce and Travel Manitoba.
