Heart Evangelista Addresses Speculations on

Rift with Glam Team

Kapuso star, Heart Evangelista, recently clarified rumors regarding tensions with her former glam team. Speaking to GMA News, Heart stated, "Life has its challenges in both our careers and personal lives. Every experience is a lesson to make us stronger." She also shared wisdom from her husband, Chiz Escudero, noting, "My husband would always tell me, 'With the glory comes the punches'," she said.

So, you can't have a perfect life, and nobody's perfect. So everything's made for a reason to make us better people and stronger," she added.

The grapevine was abuzz after DJ Jai Ho hinted at a renowned celebrity dismissing her stylist and makeup artist over credit card issues. However, Heart's makeup artist, Justin Louise Soriano, refuted these claims on Instagram. In response to a query, Justin emphasized that their parting was not due to financial disagreements. "It has nothing to do with money. Let's put these rumors to rest; we've moved on," he commented.

Anne Curtis and Rocksteddy Collaborate on a New Single!

Anne Curtis and rock band Rocksteddy have excited fans with the news of their new collaborative single. The project was unveiled by Teddy Corpuz, Rocksteddy's lead vocalist and co-host with Curtis on “It’s Showtime.” He took to Instagram, sharing a snapshot of himself, Curtis, and fellow band members Jeff Cucullo and Christian Sindico in the studio, teasing fans with the caption, "RKSTDY x [Anne Curtis]. LET'S GO!" Notably, the band's guitarist, Juven Sanducal Pelingon, wasn't present during the session. Corpuz's subsequent post showed Curtis energetically bonding and singing with the group, which he affectionately labeled, “Riot sa studio.” Although the release date remains undisclosed, fans eagerly await the collaboration.

Rocksteddy's hits include “Superhero” and “Deadma,” while Curtis boasts three albums, including “Annebisyosa” and “Forever Young.”

Yassi Pressman Linked to Political Figures: Fact or Speculation?

Netizens are abuzz with speculation regarding actress Yassi Pressman's relationship with Ilocos Norte Representative and presidential son, Sandro Marcos, after a video surfaced on TikTok showing them together at an event. The video displayed a visibly close camaraderie between the two, further fueling rumors. While some believe they are merely friends, others speculate on a deeper relationship. Yassi was last publicly associated with Toronto-based businessman Jon Semira, having announced their relationship on July 21, 2022. However, cryptic posts from the actress in August 2023 hinted at a possible breakup.

Additionally, Yassi has been linked to another political figure, Camarines Sur Governor Luigi Villafuerte, after being spotted

DepEd Faces Backlash for Removing 'Mother Tongue' from K-10 Curriculum

receiving a cheek kiss from him at an event. Netizens recalled Yassi's endorsement of Villafuerte during the 2022 elections. As of now, Yassi has not issued any statements regarding these speculations or the status of her relationship with Jon Semira.

MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) has come under fire from advocacy group Tanggol Wika for its decision to exclude the mother tongue subject from the revised K-10 curriculum. The decision could reverse the advancements made in teaching students in their first language, a critical component of the previously integrated K-12 program. The department's plan to give teachers discretion over the medium of instruction for Grade 1 may inadvertently push them towards English, further sidelining regional languages. This change comes as part

of DepEd's new “decongested” curriculum for 2024-2025, aiming to diminish learning losses and alleviate pressures on students and educators. While the mother tongue has been eliminated as a distinct subject, it will remain the medium of instruction for grades 1 to 3. Thereafter, English will dominate, excluding Filipino and Araling Panlipunan. Additionally, the Filipino subject's introduction has been delayed to Grade 2, potentially complicating the transition to a Filipino medium for other subjects.

Makati and Taguig Clash Over Jurisdiction of 'Embo' Barangays Following Supreme Court Ruling

MANILA – The territorial tension between the cities of Makati and Taguig intensified as Makati's city administrator, Claro Certeza, stated that Taguig must first obtain a writ of execution from a lower court to enact the 2021 Supreme Court’s decision transferring 10 "Embo" barangays, including Bonifacio Global City, under their jurisdiction. Taguig's Mayor, Lani Cayetano, dismissed the necessity of such a writ, accusing Makati of delay tactics.

Adding to the controversy, Makati Mayor Abby Binay reportedly demanded Taguig compensate for

14 public school buildings within the disputed barangays or face their closure. Certeza supported his stance by referencing an August letter from Supreme Court administrator Raul Villanueva, emphasizing the need for a writ before jurisdiction transfer.

Cayetano responded, arguing the Department of Education had already initiated the transfer process and the writ would merely protract proceedings. The Taguig PIO also accused Certeza of spreading misleading information about Taguig's commitment to student welfare within the affected barangays.

Hijos Del Nazareno to File Charges Against Drag Artist Pura Luka Vega

MANILA – The Hijos Del Nazareno, a group of Catholic devotees dedicated to the Black Nazarene of Quiapo Church, revealed plans to file legal charges against drag artist Amadeus Fernando Pagente, popularly known as “Pura Luka Vega,” on August 17, 2023. The charges pertain to violations under the Revised Penal Code, specifically Article 201(2)(b)(3) and 201(2) (3)(5), connected to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012), and will be lodged at the Manila Prosecutors’ Office.

The group expressed profound distress, labeling Vega's actions as disrespectful to God. The decision came after a central group meeting. They criticized Pagente for a controversial video where he emulated the image and attire of Jesus Christ, particularly the Black Nazarene, while performing a rendition of “Ama Namin.” Pagente’s performances have been widely viewed on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, garnering significant media attention. The group emphasizes the necessity of legal action to address Pagente's alleged blasphemy.

D'Est en Est by Joëlle N. Lasserre

Ano'ng Masasabi Mo? (Readers' Column)

Browsing the internet for the book D'Est en Est (From East to East) by Joëlle N. Lasserre, my daughter became curious and asked, who is Joëlle? I explained that Joëlle is her grandaunt who wrote the book about the migration of two Jewish families from Alsace to the Philippines. The last name of the two families was Levy. For brevity, I'll refer to them as Levy from Marckolsheim and Levy from Mutzig. Levy from Marckolsheim had Adolphe Blum Levy, Charles Blum Levy and Raphael Blum Levy. The famous Philippine actor regarded as the Queen of Philippine Movies, the late Jesusa Levy Sonora or Susan Roces, was a descendant of the Levy from Marckolsheim. Susan was a great-granddaughter of Adolphe Blum Levy and Benita Enriquez. The other AdolpheAdolphe Hirsch Levy of Mutzig married Eve, the youngest sister of Adolphe Blum Levy. Adolphe of Mutzig had seven siblings, the youngest was Fernand Fiestel Levy (Source: Ancestry.com). Fernand was the ascendant of Alfonso from whom the Levy’s of Bacolod would come from. Both families started their business activities in Iloilo, Philippines (Source: The First Jews

in the Philippines by Levy Abad

The First Jews in the PhilippinesFilipino Journal).

Connecting the narrative

Seeing the D' Est en Est prompted me to email Joëlle to congratulate her on publishing the book connecting the narrative about the brothers Adolphe, Charles, and Raphael’s journey because of the FrancoPrussian War from Alsace to the Philippines where they established their first successful business La Estrella del Norte in the 1870s

(Source: Escape to Manila: From Nazi Tyranny to Japanese Terror by Frank Ephraim). The Levy's in the Philippines is grateful to the author for sending them a picture of Adolphe Blum Levy, the father of Francisco Levy, and the grandfather of Susan Roces. To get more information about her newly published book D’Est en Est, I asked Joëlle If I can interview her for an article to which she generously agreed.

A picture in Toulouse

Who and what inspired you to write the book?

Actually, I knew some elements of this story. Still, after my father Maurice’s passing and sorting out

papers and photographs, I came across again a picture that served as an inspiration for the painting of the cover. I saw that picture for the first time at my grandmother's house in Toulouse and found the children's hats fairly amusing and asked my father who they were. He said, “My father, your uncle, and me. But my father (Albert) died a few weeks after the picture was taken. He was born in Iloilo.” Then he started to explain this complicated family, but I was seven and lost interest. I remember that there is a word in French for " funny" which is "rigolo" and which I immediately associated with Iloilo.

Occasionally, I met members of the family (old aunts) and my father would say that she was born in the Philippines. There is also a picture of my father's grandmother who died of cholera in the Philippines, a few months after my grandfather's birth. I thought that all these accounts were precious and that it would be a pity to be lost forever. Later, surfing the internet I found a picture of the tombstone of Adolphe Blum Levy in the Philippines, which led me eventually to Rose Levy and you (Levy Abad). This allowed me to get in touch with Robert LevyHermanos who gave me access to his father’s memoirs retracing the story of the family.

Maxime Levy’s memoir

Can you explain more about the

book for the benefit of our English reading relations and friends?

The book, which was based on Maxime Levy's memoir. Maxime is a descendant of Raphael Blum Levy. Her memoir describes the origin of the family in Alsace, how they lived there since the 17th century, how they fled the Franco-Prussian war in the 1870s, and eventually arrived in the Philippines. It also explains the development of their firm La Estrella del Norte in the Philippines and beyond, from being next to nothing to becoming a prosperous international group. But more than anything else, it shows the determination, courage, tenacity, and solidarity of these very daring young men.

It is worth noting that some of the important information shared by Joëlle was also quoted by a Filipino vlogger known as Mighty Magulang on her vlog about Adolphe Levy in 2022.

Are there old pictures/ mementos that you included in the book?

At the end of the book, there are genealogical markers to summarize who is who and with pictures when available.

Levy of Marckolsheim and Mutzig

Did you include an account of the connection between the two Levy in the Philippines from Marckolsheim and Mutzig?

There is a brief mention of Levy in the Philippines. This is the case for many people who are not

major characters in the development of La Estrella del Norte

Are there accounts of the spread of the family in other areas too?

There are also brief mentions of those who returned to France, where they settled, and the children born to those who had older brothers and sisters born in the Philippines. Did you use both genealogical records and oral narratives in your approach to writing?

All the genealogical data in the book have been thoroughly checked, I also used copies of press cuttings gracefully provided by Robert Levy Hermanos.

Going forward

Will there be an English version of the book in the near future?

No immediate plans for an English version (very costly and my English is not good enough), but I’ll have to discuss this along with an electronic format with my editor.

Merci beaucoup Joëlle for granting my interview. Your effort in writing about the ventures and struggles of the Levy’s who migrated to the Philippines is like La Estrella del Norte, a guiding star for the Marckolsheim and Mutzig branches, which they can always look up to, to find their bearings in the diaspora. Please check out the D’Est en Est on Amazon, available in Kindle and paperback editions. Pearl of the Orient Folklorama Pavilion 2023: A Symphony of Culture, Connection, and Celebration

Pearl of the Orient Pavilion returned to Folklorama after a 4-year hiatus and emerged as more than just a platform for showcasing Filipino tradition. It transformed into an immersive journey, connecting attendees with the Filipino culture in myriad enchanting ways.

Goldie Garcia, Magdaragat's Production Chair, encapsulated the anticipation and triumph of their return. "After 4 long years, it was great to be back," she recounted. The group's re-emergence had its fair share of challenges – from reviving membership to innovatively engaging newer generations. But Magdaragat wasn’t just back; it thrived. Young performers dazzled, memberships swelled, and every performance was a testament to dedication and passion. Garcia’s voice swelled with pride as she remarked, "Their hard work resonated beautifully, echoing confidence and fervor."

Yet, the allure of the Pavilion extended beyond the dance and song. An innovative karaoke setup allowed attendees to find their voices and connect with Filipino melodies. Vibrant cultural displays painted detailed portraits of Filipino history, traditions, and life, making knowledge accessible and engaging. And, perhaps the most Instagram-worthy of them all, was the photobooth featuring a large floor-to-ceiling Philippine super flag. Attendees queued up to capture moments, creating memories against the backdrop of this symbol of national pride.

Del Pelagio, the Pavilion's Adult Ambassador, highlighted the holistic experience of the Pavilion. "Beyond our main performances, the appreciation I heard was for our karaoke, cultural displays, and the iconic super flag photobooth," he stated. Pelagio's encounters served as a testament to the Pavilion's broader imprint and the lasting impact of the Filipino community's spirit. "Every interaction reflected not just Magdaragat’s excellence but the warmth and vibrancy of our entire community," he added.

The 2023 edition of the Pearl of the Orient Pavilion wasn't just about performances; it was about engagement, immersion, and shared experiences. Attendees didn’t just witness the Filipino culture; they sang its songs, delved into its history, and captured moments with its flag. Through the combined efforts of Magdaragat, voices like Garcia and Pelagio, and innovative additions like karaoke and photobooths, the Pavilion wasn't merely a venue – it was a living, breathing celebration of Filipino heritage, passion, and pride.

Friendship overload and how it ended too soon

said: "I was impressed by Sandy's creativity and friendship. I asked him to make me suits and do some alterations. Such a beautiful person with such unforgettable friendship."

Ronald Mervin Sison and Tricia Magsino-Barnabe sang three songs to remember Sandy, and Tricia said:

"Sandy’s positive and creative aura will never be forgotten - always in the form of a beautiful gown, a stunning photo, or a warm memory. I am grateful to have crossed paths with such a kind and talented individual, whose inspiring and joyful presence bettered the lives of many. Sandy

Buenaseda will live on, forever in the hearts of friends and loved ones. Dinner was served and each one enjoyed the memories of Sandy on how he had cemented friendship among the Filipinos in Winnipeg in such a short but meaningful time.

There was a positive emotion of acceptance as the pictures of the late Sandy Buenaseda, were flashed on the screen and when his friends told the stories of how they met and engaged with him for a short period of time.

A celebration of the life of Sandy Buenaseda, a fashion designer from Liliw Laguna, was held last Friday, August 11, at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM) where a novena prayer was held to commence 40 days after his passing.

Sandy's untimely demise shocked all his friends in Winnipeg and recollected how he was able to build a bridge of friendship for a short period of time in the summer of 2022.

Sandy's boyhood friend, Eva Marie Natoza San Gabriel, was his host family in Winnipeg. It was Sandy who designed the gowns of Bea, Eva's daughter, during her 18th birthday celebration.

"Sandy was a very close friend and I considered him a brother. He did all the gowns of my daughters for their 18th birthdays. His sudden passing shocked me the most and without further moment, I booked my trip to the Philippines to be with Sandy." Eva Marie said with a mournful tone.

Tina Bailon of Saladmaster expressed her grief upon knowing about the untimely passing death of Sandy whom she considered a fashion guru. Last Friday at a simple closure event, she had more to remember about her creative encounter with Sandy: "Sandy had been making my gowns for five years. He was a family to us. We took him with us to Vancouver last summer. He was working on my dress for my 50th birthday supposedly happening this month. We were expecting him to come to Winnipeg with the dress."

Tina added:" He is a good person with a good soul, with a good spirit, very talented yet underrated, and who did not charge so much. His memory lives in my closet, a centerpiece in my life, all the gowns created by Sandy, especially for me. I had dream projects and would have collaborated with him. And now that he left us, so short a time for friendship, those of you who had been touched by Sandy's friendship left an indelible mark in you."

Dante Aviso, PCCM board member said: "Sandy was a sweet and loving person. It was always a delight to be with him. He cared about the people and the community. Sandy’s desire to help the community and his creative passion in dressing his friends and clientele made an indelible impact during his sixmonth stay in Winnipeg last year."

Gloria Manlapaz, a realtor, who got her suit designed by Sandy,

The 20th World Police and Fire Games started with a bang and ended with a blast Hauling 33 medals defines the success of the Filipino athlete delegations.

The 20th World Police and Fire Games in Winnipeg became the international center stage of sporting prowess by more than 60 Filipino athletes resulting to garner a record of 33 medals - 16 gold, 13 silver, and 4 bronze and resulted in rank 17 among the 51 participating countries.

The 2023 World Police and Fire Games started on July 28 with a big opening ceremony held at Canada Life Centre and its closing was at the Forks last August 6.

Led by Lt. Col. Rhodel O. Sermonia, a seasoned badminton athlete, arrived in Winnipeg together with Brig. General Jason Ortizo, PNP Chaplain, the athletes had made arrangements for their own accommodations but later, to their surprise, the Filipino community headed by Kenneth Salazar and the volunteers had made plans to welcome them and provide accommodations by hosting families.

Kenneth Salazar, a volunteer at the games also led the many volunteers, said: "I started to welcome the athletes on July 24th with Ray Argulla, president of Bulacan Association, and later, Edison Garcia, volunteer of 204 Neighborhood Watch joined us," Salazar continued: "I started communicating with Major Mike Lorilla, the police detail of P/Lt. General Rhodel O. Sermonia, the

head of the delegation of the PNP to the games on July 23, 2023. P/Major Lotilla provided me with information about the delegation."

Kenneth Salazar, Argulla, and Garcia, with the help of other volunteers, like Leila Castro who was in charge of cash and kind donations were able to find host families for those delegates who wanted to move from other accommodations. And the whole brigade of volunteer drivers was responsible to bring the athletes to the venue and to some other errands. As days progressed, the Filipino volunteers spent more time with the delegates going to some gatherings as host families tendered breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and even bringing food needed by the athletes during the games.

P/Let. Col. Rhodel O. Sermonia was surprised by the warm hospitality of the Filipinos in Winnipeg and during the testimonial dinner held at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM), he extended a million thanks to all the volunteers, host families, food donors, volunteer drivers, and the sponsors, especially the major corporate sponsor, Vickar Automobile Group.

"We are overwhelmed by the genuine hospitality of the Filipinos in Winnipeg. Thank you very much for all your help to make our stay in Winnipeg a memorable one,"

Sermonia said.

During the live broadcast at UNTV, the newly arrived from Canada Lt. Col. Sermonia in his action program, "Sumbong Ninyo Aksiyon Agad" said, " We were overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Filipinos in Winnipeg. And we are very thankful for what they had done and without their support, it might have been difficult for us to win many medals. And we had been in many countries for the games but the support of the Filipinos in Winnipeg is incomparable and unprecedented."

Kenneth Salazar said, "On behalf of the volunteer organization who initiated the welcome meet and greet of the Philippine official

delegates to the World Police and Fire Games, I would to thank the volunteer drivers who selflessly dedicated and committed their time to driving the Filipino athletes to and from the venues every day and up to their departure back to the Philippines, and more "thank yous" to the food sponsors, host families, to all volunteers, as well as the donors, and individual organizations who donated cash assistance given to the athletes. And lastly, I want to express my gratitude to Food Trip Kitchen and Saladmaster who hosted dinner last July 30th and August 2nd respectively. And to Rene and Leila Castro for hosting a dinner after the closing ceremony for the athletes and

volunteers. No words can describe how we pulled together our collective energy to make the stay of the PNP delegation such a memorable and unforgettable showcase of what genuine volunteerism is all about."

To cap the successful 20th World Police and Fire Games, countless Filipino athletes sent their "thank yous" through Facebook for the superb hospitality accorded by the Filipinos in Winnipeg. Like Athlete Seneilet Aquino posted: "A million thanks. Your great help for us is priceless." And from Rodel Bustamante: " Thank you for your great help while we were in Winnipeg. Our memories remain in my heart forever," to name just a few messages.

Sa Úgoy ng Músika Ultimate New Wave Evolution

(& closely related styles) part 43

The rise in the mainstream in the 1990s of many Alternative forms of music excited me more as an enthusiast. At the time already a big fan of New Wave, Punk, Progressive Rock, Metal, and Classical, I readily embraced Alternative Rock, Grunge, and new breeds of Metal. However, New Wave has always remained my favorite--and because I developed the familiarity for it--I could easily discern if the music of a band may be classified as such, based primarily on melodies and instrumentation.

In that decade, the music of many bands that had been branded as Alternative Rock or Britpop (or English Rock) still carried strong elements of New Wave. As a genre,

Britpop, after all, may be described as a mix of '60s Psychedelic/Sunshine Pop, '70s Art Rock / Post-Punk, and '80s New Wave / Guitar Pop.

In the previous part of this series, I featured the respective second albums of eight Britpop-

classifiable bands. For the present batch, I picked the third albums of the same groups--except for The Stone Roses, which managed to come up with only two full-length records. I replaced it instead with the one-album wonder The La's.

* Pulp - Separations (1992) ("She's Dead")

* The La's - The La's (1990) ("There She Goes")

* Inspiral Carpets - Revenge of the Goldfish (1992) ("Dragging Me Down")

* The Farm - Hullabaloo (1994) ("Shake Some Action")

* Kitchens of Distinction - The Death of Cool (1992) ("Smiling")

* Blur - Parklife (1994) ("Girls & Boys")

* Oasis - Be Here Now (1997) ("My Big Mouth")

* Suede - Coming Up ("Beautiful Ones")

Padyaker's Uphill Odyssey: A 135km Challenge Amidst Manitoba's Majesties

The Padyaker’s Winnipeg Cycling group embarked on their annual 135km Hill Repeats Ride on August 5, 2023, a summer tradition where cyclists unite to conquer the elevations of Riding Mountain National Park, cycling to Dauphin and retracing their path back. The event saw participation from the Spandex Cycling Club, fellow enthusiasts from Winnipeg.

This bike ride is not for the faint of heart, as it features steep climbs and long descents. The route is lined with stunning views, however, cyclists must be prepared to push themselves to their limits as they tackle the grueling hills and

unforgiving wind gusts. The 135km distance is a great way to push the body to its limits and to test how far one can go.

Beyond the physical ordeal, it’s a social gathering, offering a platform to mingle, meet fellow cyclists, and bond over the shared passion for biking.

Post-ride, as the sun set, participants reveled in their collective achievement, sharing stories and dishes at a potluck. Whether you are an experienced cyclist or a beginner, the Annual 135km Hill Repeats Ride is a great way to challenge yourself and experience the beauty of Riding Mountain National Park.
