Our 2020 Social Mission Partner is After-The-Bell, an impactful nonprofit whose good work contributes immensely to our thriving, local community.
A F T E R -T H E - B E L L is a free afterschool program for all middle school students registered with the Kennett Consolidated School District. After-TheBell provides a fun learning experience in a safe, supervised environment. Students are provided a healthy after-school snack, participate in fun and engaging activities, and then are offered a bus ride home—all at no cost to families, the school district or tax payers. With more than 40 diverse activities to choose from, students can be sure to find something new, fun, and educational.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to Kennett Square. Frances Roosevelt
Fresh Face: Union Street Gallery S C I E N C E C O N F I R M S what art has always known: of all the senses, smell has the greatest power to evoke memory. The smell of the salt marshes off the coast of Charleston, says Frances Roosevelt, brings her back to her childhood home. “The salt air gives me life,” she says. “It’s in my blood.” And the paintings in her new Union Street Gallery pulse with that life and love of place. When she was transitioning out of architecture and into painting fifteen years ago, Frances found freedom in broad brushstrokes on large canvases. She renders the big skies reflected in the water, and the light, color, and
sunsets of these island landscapes in her expressionistic, slightly abstract style. She loves the quick-drying quality of acrylic paint, and often begins with just the horizon line and color palette in mind. On those days when she feels inspired, the work seems to create itself, and that’s when the process is the most rewarding. Frances has lived in West Marlborough Township with her husband for thirtyfive years, and their three children have returned to this area. While she values her creative solitude, she loves being part of, and giving back to, the Kennett Square community. The

proceeds from some of her smaller paintings, for example, will go to Kennett Area Community Services (KACS). She’s grateful for supportive family and friends who have encouraged her to show her work in galleries in Charleston, SC and Wilmington, DE, and annually at the “Abstractions” show at Scarlett Thicket Farm in Kennett Square. She hadn’t planned to open a gallery herself, however, until she saw the space at 108 North Union Street. “I knew right away,” she said. “It’s perfect.” Union Street Gallery is open Thursday through Saturday from noon until four and by appointment.

R E S I D E N T, E L L A S E S T R I C H . Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ella Sestrich found her way to Unionville, Pennsylvania in the 60s. Although she had no experience cooking, she and her husband Francis bought a store in 1973 after he unexpectedly lost his job. They called it Sestrich’s Country Market, which is currently Catherine’s Restaurant on West Doe Run Road. Her experiences over those 23 years of running

the market inspired her to write a book, “The Story of Sestrich’s Country Market: Friends, Food, Fox-hunting and ‘Facts.’” Published in 2019, Ella became a writer and curator of local history. Friends Home continues to be a vibrant community of wise and talented residents still pursuing their dreams and their good work.

Nature’s remedy W H AT I F S C I E N T I S T S F O U N D an antidote to stress that would lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, increase self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and improve overall feelings of well-being? And what if this remedy cost nothing with no side effects? Although your mother probably didn’t mention the positive effects of negative ions, her advice to go play outside and get some fresh air was very wise indeed. Anecdotally, we know we feel better after we go for a walk, a run, or spend time outside. But there’s also increasing scientific evidence for the very real benefits of the great outdoors. A recent study at the University of Exeter found that people who spend a total of just two hours a week in parks or other natural environments report substantially better health and psychological well-being. The Japanese practice of “forest bathing” (being in the presence of trees) brings similar benefits. Here in Southern Chester County, we’re surrounded by the cure—a wealth of stunning open spaces to explore. Here are just a few: Natural Lands’ preserves offer miles of trails through varied terrain including woodlands, meadows, and stream valleys. In addition to the nearby Stroud and
ChesLen preserves, find beautiful vistas, trails, and birdwatching at Sadsbury Woods in Coatesville, Wawa Preserve in Media, and Willisbrook in Malvern. The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (TLC) provides “TLC” for the environment and residents through preserving and stewarding spaces including the Chandler Mill Nature Center and Preserve in Kennett Township and Stateline Woods in Kennett Square. We also have Longwood Gardens—one of the world’s premier horticultural display gardens that includes the 86-acre Meadow Garden—on our doorstep. Kennett Square’s Anson B. Nixon Park covers 106 acres with trails, ponds, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, and a dog park. The Kennett Greenway’s network of trails will link preserved open spaces, recreational facilities, and other community assets. M I C H E L L E VA H E Y I S A L L S M I L E S while training clients at her fitness studio, VIDA Performance. “It’s all about technique and learning how to move and breathe,” she says as she describes her coaching methodology. She lives out her vision passionately and can’t hide the fulfillment she receives from teaching wellness as a lifestyle. As a gymnast and dancer, movement has always been a cornerstone in her life. Michelle grew up in Guatemala and later graduated from Johnson and Wales. While there, she met her husband Matt, a native of the Kennett Square area. They continued to develop their knowledge and experience in health and fitness as they raised their three boys. When Michelle taught her first fitness class, she realized her true calling. She and Matt decided to share their 20+ years of experience in the fitness industry with the community. They’ve dedicated the past few years to building their thriving fitness studio, VIDA Performance. Michelle became an IIN Health Coach in order to help her clients achieve even greater results. “Health coaching isn’t just about nutrition,” she says. “It means pursuing a lifestyle of balance—in relationships, spirituality, career, and food.” Most recently, Michelle was inspired to offer her health coaching as a virtual experience. Elizabeth & Vince Moro T WO O F T H E M O S T P R E C I O U S resources we need to nurture and preserve are land and the human spirit. They’re profoundly linked, and Elizabeth and Vince Moro are working passionately to safeguard both. “When we take care of what’s special, we thrive,” Elizabeth says. The couple has joined forces in the community to save irreplaceable natural treasures including Barnard’s Orchard and Crebilly Farm through their Brandywine in White events. They’ve also put their 12-acre farm under conservation easement to protect endangered species. But the story of their land, and their mission, goes even deeper. “Our farm is situated next to the former Chadds Peak Ski Area,” Vince says. “People gathered there, learned to ski, formed relationships.” The Moros want to preserve not only the land but also this tradition of gathering community. And so the Little Barn of Big Ideas was born. Their beautiful historic barn, featuring a large central table with room for everyone, is a place for people to come together. “Everyone has genius inside,” Elizabeth says, “and as we brainstorm, listen, and share resources, we help each other make a difference in areas where we’re passionate. We’re stronger together.” Elizabeth spent a lot of time outside as part of her process of healing after her disheartening run for Congress. The experience strengthened her and helped her to focus on what unites us—and she’s writing a book exploring the core values that hold us together. She calls these the Civil Graces, and they include freedom, justice, and equality as well as hospitality, integrity, and empathy.
