Welcome, summer!

As the days get longer and the air gets warmer, we know that summer is on it's way to Columbia. School is letting out for the year and students are graduating; boats are humming on Lake Murray and kayakers are making their way down our region's rivers; neighbors are hitting the road for vacations and grills are firing up back at home for cookouts with family and friends. Summer is a wonderful time to be in our capital city and in this issue, you'll find all the ways you can enjoy the season right here at home. Our summer issue always focuses on food and drink. Why? Because as college students move away for the summer and people go on their vacations, our local businesses feel the impact of fewer customers. Our restaurants, breweries, cafes, and markets rely on consistent support throughout the year, especially during the quieter summer months. Within these pages, you'll discover an array of dining destinations, from newly opened spots to establishments boasting flavors from around the globe, all local to you in Columbia.

We've shined a spotlight on people and organizations that are doing incredible things with food and special meals. There's

Neset, who partnered with the City of Columbia to create a mobile market, selling fresh, nutritious ingredients in food deserts. There's also Palmetto Trail's Trail to Table Dinner, where you can have a fun evening out while supporting a worthy cause as every bite helps fund their mission.

It's our hope that these stories inspire you to venture out and explore new culinary experiences this summer, knowing that your support makes a significant impact on our local economy and community. Don't feel like going out on the town? Treat yourself to a wonderful takeout dinner at home. Have a friend with a new baby? Plan to pick up a meal to deliver or drop off a gift card to their favorite local restaurant. Have a birthday, anniversary, or special occasion? Call up that restaurant you love and make reservations—we know that any and every restaurant in the city would love to host you!

May your summer be filled with the juiciness of ripe peaches, the freshness of locally grown vegetables, and the refreshing taste of an ice cold beverage on a sunsoaked patio.

Support Small, Save Local—Always. BRYNLEY FARR

A sweet experience

The home buying and selling process—while often an exciting time—brings with it to-do lists that are a mile long and stress as you hope all the right pieces fall into place as you leave one home for another. On top of all of that, most people move when there's something big going on in their life! A new city for a new job; a bigger home for a growing family; a smaller home for parents that have sent their grown children out into the world; a relocation to be closer to grandchildren or grandparents. When you add it all together, it's a lot for someone to take on by themselves!

Nobody understands this better than Kate Sweeten and her team at The Sweeten Group. Kate entered the real estate business 13 years ago and since then, she has closed on over 750 homes, has handled over $221 million in volume of homes, and has reached the top 1% of agents in the world, all from right here in the Midlands. She didn't become as successful as she is today without understanding the true value of a real estate agent: being a trusted friend who can adeptly navigate the real estate industry for you.

8

Kate’s client base is proof that not only does she get to know every family and individual she works with, but she truly connects with them on a deeper level to provide invaluable insight and service throughout the entire buying and selling process. This is why many of her clients have either used Kate in a previous move, are family members of prior clients, or came to Kate based off of a recommendation from a friend who has worked with her team before.

Let The Sweeten Group handle every aspect of the home buying and selling process for you when

you're on the move in the Midlands. On the selling side, they'll expertly stage, photograph, price, and list your home so it sells quickly and for a great price. When you're ready to buy, they listen to all of your needs and wants in a home, and they track down the best one to suit what you're looking for.

The Sweeten Group does it all for you, making the process of finding your home sweet home an amazing experience from start to finish.

Authentic The family behind Toms Creek Family Farms

Before Neset Hikmet settled in Columbia, he was a man of many places. Originally from Cyprus, an island on the Mediterranean Sea, he moved to the United States in 1980 to be with his now-wife. For 32 years, they lived all over the eastern seaboard before finding themselves here in Columbia in 2012, where they purchased Toms Creek Family Farms five years later with the intention of creating a legacy for their daughters. Keeping the farm true to its name, their daughter and son-in-law, Ezgi and Larry, moved here from Florida with their three daughters to work with the new family business. The farm now offers everything from produce and dairy to preserves and meats at their store, the Farmers Market Xchange in downtown Columbia. Everyone has a hand in the success of the business, with Ezgi heading operations at store, the Hikmet’s other daughter Guzin managing the farm, and their parents happily supporting them every step of the way. “We built this for them,” Neset says with a smile.

For Neset, who grew up around the growing and selling of food during his childhood in Cyprus, opening a brick and mortar store for Toms Creek seemed like the natural move.

“My grandfather [on my mother’s side] had citrus groves,” Neset explains. “My father’s side, his part of the family historically goes back and they’re grocery owners. A small town grocery, mom and pop style. So I grew up in between those, and you get used to it. It’s part of your life.”

In addition to running the rapidly growing farm, Neset is a professor in the Department of Integrated Information Technology at the University of South Carolina. There, he teaches courses on cybersecurity, networking, and artificial intelligence, incorporating the latter into his farm in innovative and exciting ways. With grant funding from the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, he implemented sensors in the Toms Creek Family Farms greenhouses that

report crop performance in real time. Through data collection and machine learning, these sensors help Neset and the Toms Creek Family Farms team know exactly what nutrients and environmental factors their crops need in order to thrive. He brings this opportunity for learning back to his graduate students, too, who come to the farm for real world experience with artificial intelligence.

That’s far from the only way Toms Creek Family Farms is impacting the region. Recently, the farm partnered with the City of Columbia to create a mobile market, selling fresh, nutritious ingredients in food deserts. Currently, the mobile market stops in two zip codes in the Columbia area, but that could soon change with the addition of another truck. The family believes in providing locally-sourced fresh produce to everybody, and they have high hopes to expand not just in our city but across the state.

You can find their bread—made from wheat they grow and grind themselves—fresh vegetables, and more at Soda City Market on Saturdays. And be sure to check out the Farmers Market Xchange on Lady Street in the Vista, where you can purchase their produce as well as other locallysourced foods, lunch and dinner.

The sky’s the limit for Toms Creek Family Farms, so be on the lookout for new ways they’re impacting Columbia with healthy food, educational opportunities and more!

Go green with wp rawl

Family-owned WP Rawl is as green as you can get, from the greens that they grow and harvest on their farm to the green practices that they incorporate into their sustainable farming. Four generations of the Rawl family have built a legacy of sustainability based on the basics—reduce, reuse, and recycle—as they work towards decreasing their carbon footprint. They have been stewards of sustainability since day one in 1925, and as they head into the next century of farming, they'll continue growing—and being—green.

reduce WP Rawl has worked to decrease energy consumption as well as water and paper usage. Implementing technology like motion sensors to turn off lights and digital apps to replace paper has allowed the farm to cut down on waste.

Have you tried WP Rawl's latest product?

Simple Sautés, found at Wal-Mart, make getting a tasty collard dish on the table for supper this summer a quick and easy task. Pick up one of their three Simple Sauté kits and try it for yourself!

reuse On the farm, it is important to get as much use out of resources as possible. Both product waste and waste water are used to create compost to fertilize the fields organically. Any leftover greens are donated to charities.

recycle In addition to recycling materials used on the farm like cardboard, paper, and cans, WP Rawl has gone the extra step to ensure their packaging is able to be recycled by consumers as well—even down to their twist ties!

Scan the QR code to learn more about WP Rawl’s sustainability practices and how they plan to continue making the Earth a better place.

a taste of summer

While most of the world views the pink blooms that blossom along the spindly limbs of a peach tree as an iconically spring moment, Big Smile Peaches isn’t among the same train of thought. To them, the pops of pink can only mean one thing: summer is coming, and along with it, the fresh, flavorful peaches from their orchards.

Luckily for us, the blooms have transformed and soon, their peaches will be ripe for picking.

Peaches have been in the Yonce family, who own and operate Big Smile Peaches, for nearly a century. It’s a tradition that spans four generations as it has been handed down from one family member to the next, along with all the knowledge and secrets to growing the sweetest, tastiest fruit in their orchard. The family takes great pride in the work they do on their farm and the produce they harvest.

It’s the consistent quality of their fruit that brings customers back year after year.

Every step of the operation—the care of the orchard to the picking, packaging, and shipping—is overseen by a member of the family. They’ve set the standards high and continually work to meet and exceed the expectation of excellence that is synonymous with Big Smile Peaches.

Located about an hour outside of Columbia in Johnston, SC, the Yonce family’s orchard is roughly 4,300 acres (the equivalent of over 3,200 football fields)! At the height of peach season, their pickers can pick 400 tons, or 800,000 pounds, of fruit from the trees per day. What’s one to do with all of those peaches?

Much of what is harvested is shipped to grocery stores and distributors throughout the

country for customers to enjoy, but the family wouldn’t be a true Southern family if they didn’t save some peaches back for guests who stop by to visit. Big Smile Peaches always has the welcome mat out for customers to come by and purchase a basket of just-pickedthat-day peaches to take home with them. Their market also includes pecans, which are grown on their farm, too!

Take a drive this summer and pick up a basket or two of peaches.

Pack one in your lunch, cut one up over a bowl of vanilla ice cream, bake a few into a cobbler, or craft one into a cocktail. No matter how you choose to enjoy your peaches, we know after one bite of your Certified SC Grown peach, you’ll be smiling from ear to ear at how delicious and quintessentially summer it tastes!

Social Mission | Making a difference in the lives of others

Social Mission South Carolina Wildlife Federation

With many sun-soaked days ahead, there’s no better time to continue South Carolina Wildlife Federation (SCWF)’s spotlight as Fig’s 2024 Social Mission Partner. Since its founding in 1931, SCWF has pledged its time and resources to conserving and restoring the Palmetto State’s wildlife and habitats. Their mission is to connect people across the entire state through education and advocacy—discovering the unique ways in which we can contribute to protecting and preserving our beautiful state that many call home. This summer, SCWF has a list of jam-packed events that promises adventure, outreach, and community collaboration. Here are just a few ways that SCWF is involved with our local hospitality communities:

FORKS, KNIVES, & SPOONBILLS CONSERVATION DINNERS

SCWF organizes multiple conservation dinners throughout the calendar year, with each unique course focusing on a specific species of feathered friends with six wine-paired courses. This year’s featured species include the Eastern meadowlark, the little blue heron, the Eastern screech owl, the brown-headed nuthatch, the red-winged blackbird, and of course, the roseate spoonbill, whose conservation story inspired this dinner series. With each course served, SCWF Industry Habitat Manager Jay Keck will dive into the fascinating story and history behind each bird and the vital importance of our conservation efforts. This past spring, SCWF hosted a dinner at Napa at Kingsley in Fort Mill, with a delicious menu created by Chef David Sears. From braised veal cheek, fricasse escargot, and smoked peaches, each course is meticulously created by the chefs for a five-star gourmet experience. With each dinner ticket purchase, you can help further SCWF’s mission in conserving the beautiful nature and habitats of the Palmetto State.

PLISHING CHALLENGE

This beloved angling tradition hits the waters once again! Most of us spend many beautiful sunny days fishing on Columbia’s surrounding waters during the summer months, so why not make the time even more meaningful? “Plishing” is a combination of the Swedish word ‘plocka upp,’ which means to pick up litter, with fishing. If you’re a passionate angler, committed naturalist, or a bit of both—this challenge is for you. Wherever you set out on your next fishing adventure this summer, you can log the fish you catch as well as surrounding litter you pick up to win awesome prizes. The challenge lasts all summer!

WILD SUMMER NIGHTS ONLINE AUCTION Don’t miss out on SCWF’s Wild Summer Nights Online Auction this summer from July 19th through the 21st! This annual fundraising auction helps to support SCWF’s mission to further education, advocacy, and the restoration of our wildlife and habitats. Some exciting auction items you can look forward to are custom art, vacation trips, gift cards, and more. There is something for everyone to love!

COFFEE FOR THE BIRDS Something as simple as a coffee purchase can help to protect and restore our essential migratory songbird population. Birds and Beans coffee is grown organically by family-owned farms who are paid top dollar to grow sustainable coffee beans, and is bird-friendly and fair-trade! You can pay for a monthly subscription for a low cost, and it’s shipped directly to your door. You can even find Birds and Beans coffee at SCWF, the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, the Flora & Fauna Marketplace in Lexington, and more places in South Carolina!

It's hard to consider the possibility that there's somewhere hotter than Columbia on a summer afternoon, but have you been to HOTWORX yet? Their infrared saunas get cranked up to between 120-130 degrees for your workout. The goal is to embrace the heat for an efficient workout. The warm temperatures raise your core body temperature to speed up your metabolism; the infrared energy activates your body's regenerative process; and the workout itself increases your heart rate to maximize the number of calories you burn. Turn up the heat on your fitness this season!

If you want your skin smooth and wrinkle-free in time for summer, then you want the experts with About Face Aesthetics and their brand new resurfacing technology, Tixel ®.
