A note from Fig

into action Spring

SPRING BRINGS the promise of longer days filled with light and activity. It’s a season of growth, new beginnings, and positive change. Gone are the 4 PM sunsets and in their place are bright evenings encouraging us to explore the outdoors, gather with friends, and savor the sunshine. While spring is a popular time to get some fresh air and build healthy habits, it’s also a great time to get active in our community.

As we rally ‘round this season, what better way to get involved than to engage with the many organizations that help our Lehigh Valley thrive? Consider volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank, taking a yoga class at Vibe Power Yoga at The Waterfront in Allentown, or biking along one of the many hidden trails throughout Lehigh Valley. Regardless of your choice, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to not only do good, but feel good too.

This season is also an opportunity to challenge yourself and try something new! Grab some friends and Get Your Tail on the Trail, experience the serenity of golf at Woodstone Country Club, or mingle and network at a Chamber outing. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone is truly rewarding, and better yet, those new connections and skills you gain could prove to be a home run for your life and your health. Whether you are biking, hiking, or exploring parks and green spaces, Lehigh Valley has you covered. As you peruse the following pages, you’ll find that spring offers us the chance to rally ‘round Lehigh Valley and embrace all the region has to offer. All that’s left is to get up and go.

Enjoy exploring!

Empowering Differences, Unlocking Potential

MEET LUKE MOLITORIS, a fifth grade student whose passion for learning flourished at The Hillside School.

Luke wakes up each morning excited for school. He even passed up an offer to sleep in after attending the Phillies Game 7 last year in order to not miss a moment! His parents attest to a transformation in his attitude toward learning, citing newfound eagerness that dramatically contrasts his previous experience. They credit Luke’s enthusiasm to The Hillside School’s commitment to individualized attention.

For over 40 years, The Hillside School has set the standard in tailored education for students with language-based learning differences. With class sizes limited to eight students, the school focuses on empowering students from kindergarten through eighth grade with the tools to succeed in high school and beyond. Luke’s story mirrors the success of many Hillside students, illustrating the profound impact of this supportive learning environment.

Not the kind of

Heart Throb Taylor Swift sang about

PENNSBURG’S KIM KRUG

EXPERIENCED her highest of highs last May during a Taylor Swift concert at Lincoln Financial Field, swaying to the sounds of her favorite artist and trading bracelets with fellow Swifties.

A week later, she endured the lowest of lows when hours-long chest pains and the feeling of pins and needles sent her to the emergency room at St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus.

St. Luke’s cardiologist Marcus A. Averbach, MD, said Kim’s EKG appeared normal, “but her blood tests showed high levels of troponin, indicating she was having a heart attack.”

Kim experienced a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (non-STEMI), meaning that the heart’s need for

oxygen can’t be met. Kim was transferred by ambulance to St. Luke’s Anderson Campus.

An on-call team led by interventional cardiologist Luis A. Tejada, MD, performed an angioplasty and placed a stent to fix a 100 percent blockage in her left anterior descending artery (LAD), the so-called “Widowmaker” blockage.

“They saved my life,” Kim said. “The second part of the story is that because I waited so long to go in, I had a lot of heart damage.”

With help from Andrea Emery at St. Luke’s Quakertown Campus Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Kim found the physical and emotional rehabilitation “absolutely extraordinary!”

Kim fully committed to the rehab process. She changed her diet, quit smoking, exercised, and learned about cardiac risk factor modification. She lost 60 pounds!

That last session with Andrea was something sweet. And Swift. Andrea created an entire Taylor Swift playlist for the final session.

Kim thought she was living her best life at that Taylor Swift concert. Today, she really is.

“None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary care from everyone at St. Luke’s,” Kim said.

LEHIGH VALLEY’S HIDDEN TRAIL GEMS

THEY’RE EVERYWHERE AROUND

HERE —hand-hewn mountain bike trails running through the Lehigh Valley’s parks and preserves. On most days, you’ll find cyclists of every age and ability spinning down these forest paths, enjoying the rewards of a hard effort and buzzing from the natural beauty surrounding them.

The quantity of thrilling trails located near city centers makes this one of the best areas for mountain biking on the East Coast.

Many of the trails have been built in the past 15 years by the Valley Mountain Bikers, a group of mountain bike enthusiasts who volunteer more than 2,000 hours annually to maintain these trail systems.

The sport’s popularity is soaring and on summer days, trailhead parking lots are jammed with cars. But on most days, you’ll experience Lehigh Valley’s most scenic areas with few distractions other than the blissful sounds of your bike rolling over pristine mountain trails.

EXPLORE

LEHIGH VALLEY'S PARKS AND TRAILS THAT CATER TO BIKE RIDERS OF ALL SKILL LEVELS.

» Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center, Nazareth

The 18 miles of dirt, grass, and gravel paths spiraling around Bushkill Creek are great for casual riders looking for an easy spin.

» Jordan Creek Park, Allentown

Practically hugging Route 22, the trails at Jordan Creek Park are ideal for beginners or experts. The narrow dirt singletrack dips and swirls around Jordan Creek, where you might steal a glimpse of a blue heron as you bomb along the trails.

» Lake Nockamixon State Park, Quakertown

Every inch of these smooth mountain bike trails was handcrafted by Valley Mountain Bikers’ volunteers. Even more impressive: the stunning lake views.

» Salisbury Walking Purchase Park, Salisbury Township

Tucked behind St. Luke’s hospital in Southside, Bethlehem, 11 miles of trails unfurl through nearly 500 acres of wild, remote-feeling open space. The steep, rocky hillside makes these hand-built trails popular with advanced riders, hikers, and trail runners.

» South Mountain Wildlands

Preserve, Emmaus

Emmaus may be the closest thing the Lehigh Valley has to a mountain town, and the trails rising from this hamlet are a playground for the adventurous. Huff your way to the top and you’ll pass house-size glacial boulders, take in views of the entire Valley, and be rewarded with thrilling descents back down.

» Trexler Nature Preserve, Schnecksville

Riding the jumps, drops, and highspeed turns of the Valley’s newest trail system is every bit as thrilling as a ride on Dorney Park’s Steel Force roller coaster. Don’t miss Jack O’ Diamonds—the trail is one of the country’s first with BMX-style jumps built on public land.

GET YOUR GEAR

THE ARRAY OF BIKING OPPORTUNITIES

in Lehigh Valley is complemented by a number of local outfitters and bike shops, like Cutters Bike Shop in Bethlehem, where riders can gear up for the ultimate twowheeled experiences. Lehigh Valley truly caters to the road and mountain biking community, ensuring an unforgettable ride for every cycling enthusiast.

Mountain Bike: Almost any bike will work on paved paths, but forest trails require something more specialized. A mountain bike’s strong brakes, bump-eating suspension, and wide, grippy tires let you cruise in control over dirt and the region’s nefarious rocks.

Or try an E-Bike: These mountain bikes have a small motor that gives you a boost when you pedal, making hills a breeze and giving you the power to ride longer with less sweat. E-Bikes, however, are not the same as larger electric motorcycles, which are prohibited on most trails. Look for one with suspension in the front and rear of the bike.

Good Helmet: Whether you’re rolling out on your first mountain bike ride or your four-hundredth, you need a legit, snug-fitting cycling helmet that won’t fall off if you wipe out. If yours is older than the PPL building, consider a new one, which will protect you better.

Bike Jersey and Shorts: You can ride in anything, but shirts and shorts designed for mountain biking are made from lightweight, cooling fabrics. Some jerseys have extra ventilation and are longer than everyday shirts, to keep them from riding up your back as you grind up a climb. Many shorts come with a thin, built-in, butt-protecting pad.

REVOLUTIONIZING REHAB:

EXPLORING THE FUTURE OF ROBOTICS

TECHNOLOGY EVOLVES EVERY DAY.

It becomes more advanced, smaller, lighter, more usable—and the same applies to technology for people with stroke, brain injury, and other disabilities.

To identify and test the latest robotic and wearable technologies that can help in providing leading-edge care, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation has created The Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation. The forward-thinking hub was made possible by a major gift from the Fleming Foundation.

“The Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation will support investment in leading-edge technology

that might have a significant impact on the quality of life for Good Shepherd’s patients,” said Good Shepherd Rehabilitation President and CEO Michael Spigel, PT, MHA. “This generous gift also allows Good Shepherd to partner with companies that are developing technologies that can be applied within our rehabilitation network and beyond.”

Giving Back: Keich Basketball Legacy

KEICH BASKETBALL LEGACY

is a groundbreaking concept with a lasting impact. Launched in Summer 2023, the program is an incubator for student-athletes, creating a place where they can excel at the sport they love while simultaneously honing life skills they can leverage when their basketball career ends.

At Keich Basketball Legacy, middle school, high school, and college students have access to programming that blends rigorous basketball training with cutting-edge sports science and opportunities for personal and professional development. Whether offering life coaching, tutoring, personal finance advice, or job training, the goal is to empower student-athletes to achieve greatness on and off the court.

As a nonprofit, the organization partners with Lehigh Valley businesses and companies across the country to sponsor student-athletes through the program. Each partnership allows students to gain valuable mentorship from prominent business leaders, paving the way to future employment opportunities.

“ Business leaders know the potential of an athlete with a strong work ethic, and they want to create a funnel into their business and build real relationships with these kids,” said Katie Keich, founder of Keich Basketball Legacy.

“ If you would have asked me five years ago if I ever thought I could somehow bring business and basketball together I would have said no way.”

Katie grew up playing basketball at an advanced level. However, after multiple serious injuries, she was forced to abandon her dream of playing the sport in college. After graduating high school, Katie leveraged the discipline and tenacity she gained on the court into an immensely successful corporate career. Years later, Katie’s passion for the game was reignited when she became a coach for her then-four-year-old daughter’s first basketball team.

By building Keich Basketball Legacy, Katie and her husband Larry encourage student-athletes to rise to their potential, instilling a sense of purpose in their lives and casting a vision for a vibrant future beyond basketball.

Love on a plate, art on the walls

IN 2023, ANTHONY HECHME

opened his family’s gourmet sandwich shop, Handheldz (the suffixal “z” being a loving reference to Anthony's son, Zavion), with the ambition of creating food that looks like art but is made with heart. The restaurant is nestled in Bethlehem’s SouthSide Arts District, an area known for its mix of diverse cultural heritages and arts-centric downtown atmosphere. If you’re looking for an elevated comfort food experience in South Bethlehem, the Handheldz menu delivers a premium selection of craft sandwiches, fresh smoothies, salad bowls, and more.

Inspired by the Hechmes’ love for the food they create, self-taught artist Karina

“Rubia” Santana took up the challenge to paint a mural in the restaurant’s lobby. The result is a simple ode to the humble sandwich and a playful parody of high Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam . However, this isn’t the only piece of art you’ll find at Handheldz. The Hechmes want to create opportunities for local artists to showcase their works for sale in the restaurant. A small capsule collection of works by contemporary artist Dylan Collazo currently decorates walls at Handheldz, but Anthony hopes to display more artists’ works soon. Interested artists should contact the business for more information.

The science behind a

sweet love story

ANNABEL FIGUEROA MET

ANDREW UNDERWOOD in 2017 while he was traveling abroad in her home country of Chile. The two quickly fell in love, but their entrepreneurial journey started when Andrew began craving a good old-fashioned American donut. While the standard brands of mass-produced donuts were readily available in Chile, freshly made artisan donuts were more difficult to find.

Inspired by this gap in the Chilean market, Andrew and Annabel began perfecting a top-secret dough recipe passed down from Andrew’s grandfather, a pastry chef by trade. After countless months of tweaking and experimenting, Donerd’s Donuts was born, and the couple took to the streets of Santiago in a 1981 Volkswagen van to sell their specialty pastries paired with hot drip and nitro coffees. “The science behind the perfect donut and coffee” became Donerd’s claim to fame and allowed them to expand to stateside locations in Jim Thorpe and South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Now cemented in their neighborhoods as a must-stop donut shop, Annabel and Andrew are determined to show love to the communities that welcomed them with open arms. Each week they travel to a different small business in the area to give them a full variety box of fresh Donerd’s Donuts— completely free of charge.

“We have been shown so much support in these neighborhoods, and it’s the least we can do to give back,” the owners said.

Authentic: Elaine Zelker

ELAINE ZELKER is a storyteller, entrepreneur, and purpose-driven creative, with photographer, author, coach, and philanthropist among her titles.

Before the multi-hyphenate creative life she now leads, Elaine worked in healthcare. As a hospice nurse, she listened intently as her patients reflected on their lives. Their stories prompted her to think about what it means to live a life of purpose. Still, it wasn’t until many years later when her parents passed away that a sobering reality sunk in—life is too short to be following a path that is out of alignment with what you value most.

This realization shifted the course of Elaine’s life, urging her to leave a job she loved to pursue a career where she could fully express her creativity.

Now, as a headshot and branding photographer, Elaine empowers people from behind the camera, capturing their essence in its most powerful light. In 2023, Elaine published her latest book, Zero Limits: Breaking the Boundaries That Hold You Back , with the intention of inspiring people to summon the same courage that prompted her transformation.

“The book is finally a chance for people to see that I’m more than just a photographer, more than just an author or cafe owner,” Elaine said.

“My mission is to empower others to use their gifts and talents to rise and soar.”

In keeping with her mission, Elaine is participating in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) Visionaries of the Year fundraising competition— a community-wide effort to raise funds for patients battling cancer. After one of her closest friends was diagnosed with cancer, Elaine joined the competition to share her friend’s story and advocate for people facing cancer in Lehigh Valley.

“People are stepping up, it’s unreal,” Elaine said. “Education and patient advocacy are primary to me, and now I have a voice and a platform to do that.”
