Editorials, Opinions and Other Stuff Volunteers make Field Day of the Past happen Last year, 2018, was quite a ride for us here at Field Day of the Past, but volunteers preservered and we made it through another year. JimBob and Dennis and other volunteers didn’t get the plants in the ground early because it rained. Then, the ground dried up and nothing came up, followed by more rain and more rain and more rain.

Eventually the “garden gang” wrung some tomatoes, some cotton and a few sunflowers out of the ground, but it wasn’t a great year for crops.

In May, our team of “school field trip” volunteers turned out in force and offered the first graders from Evergreen Elementary School a memorable day.

The first weekend of June arrived and volunteers headed to the Spring Jubilee at Rassawek in Columbia. The rain accompanied us. Our mobile wooden spoon making machine made its first appearance in public

and met with a great deal of interest. Volunteers engaged in a repeat performance with the machinery just before July 4th at The Old Threshers Reunion in Denton, NC where the spoon making machine drew large crowds.

Rain returned in September in the days before the show, but volunteers were still not deterred.

The weather then decided to throw us a day of tornadoes throughout the area and several of the volunteers found themselves huddled together in the root cellar at the log cabin, hoping to ride out a

tornado which was supposed to drop right on top of us. We avoided that, but we couldn’t sidestep more rain that followed in the new few days, dropping eight more inches on our already wet ground. Forced to cancel the lawnmower pulls and the Virginia High School Rodeo, volunteers again pulled together and put on a great show.

As you can see, volunteers are the key to making things happen. They will be back on the field when the cold weather breaks preparing for another year. Save the date: Field Day of the Past 2019 — Sept. 20-22.

Field Day of the Past wins awards in 10 VAF communication classes

sessions the VAF also hosts its Communications Awards contest. Categories for communication award include several print advertising classes, radio, television, postcard, fair scrapbook, website, a photographic essay of the fair, promotional items, premium book, map, and tee shirts. Field Day of the Past placed entries in 13 of these categories and came home with first place and Best in Show for the Fair Scrapbook. We placed Field Day of the Past representatives once again attended the Virginia Association of Fairs conference at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA in early January. The VAF consists of approximately 64 fairs throughout the Commonwealth and the annual conference offers an opportunity for all member fairs to come together to attend educational seminars and workshops, to swap ideas for handling problems common to all and to socialize.

In addition to the seminars, workshops, social

Fairs compete in three divisions based on the number of attendees to the fair. Field Day competes in the largest category of more than 30,000 attendees. We are pleased that we were able to do so well in a competition with many talented individuals.

We would like to congratulate all the VAF members who placed in the Communication Awards competitions.

Field Day of the Past introduces Wally Wallow

One bright and sunny day, many of the Field Day of the Past volunteers decided to get together and do some work on the showgrounds. Winter has been hard and mercurial this

year, raining and snowing one day, and bright and sunny the next so everyone was aching to be outside in the sun. Mr. Gammon was in his workshop. Mrs. Gammon was in her office

working hard typing on something and shuffling papers,. Mrs. Williams was there too, making copies and helping shuffle. Mr. Davis and Mrs. Menefee were walking around checking on all the buildings making sure all were in good order.

Everything seemed to be moving along efficiently when all of a sudden Mr. Holbrook yelled, “Ya’ll better come look at this!”

He yelled so loudly that it could be heard across the show grounds. Everyone came running to where Mr. Holbrook was standing and noticed the strangest thing. There was a pig on the porch of the Blacksmith Shop. Now, a pig in and of himself is not very strange. Many of our volunteers have seen pigs before,. Many grew up in the country and

raised pigs. This pig, however, was very different. First off, he was standing up on his two back feet, which many of our porcine companions have difficulties accomplishing due to their rotund physique. The second and third rather remarkable things were that he was carrying a fiddle and dressed in overalls.

We all agreed that he had incredible fashion sense.

It's one thing for a pig to be wearing overalls and carrying a fiddle, but what happened next astonished everyone. Mr. Holbrook said, “You think that's something, check this out!”

Mr. Holbrook and the pig struck up the most stirring rendition of “In the Pines” that anyone had every heard, so much so that tears shone in the

eyes of all the volunteers.

The pig, noticing that everyone was pretending that the sun was awfully bright, changed the mood by playing “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” so brilliantly that even Mr. Gammon kicked up his heels to dance.

After settling down from the music all the volunteers put their heads together to think. What were they going to do with such and amazing pig. Where would he live?

Where would he go?

What would happen to him? What should they call him? Mr. Holbrook again chimed in, speaking over the heads of all the volunteers, “Well, his name is Wally, of course.

you know. I figure he could stay right here until September. He seems real helpful!” So it was decided. Wally Wallow would stay. He could set up bunk in the Pullman car after gaining Mr. Tarrant’s permission (by playing a very sorrowful version of “Hear that Lonesome Whippoorwill”).

2018 Field Day of the Past Truck Pulls draw large crowds

Bob Simmons, driving Foolish Habit, came in 5th in the 6400# Stock FWD classes during the Field Day of the Past truck pulls.

Although rain plagued the 2018 Field Day of the Past show, falling weather held off for the Truck Pulls on Friday and Saturday evening, and the Truck Pull Committee were able to prepare the track for the pulls, much to the delight of the crowds which flock in every year to watch as pullers in classes from gas pick-ups to the Open Classes with the big trucks. The Truck Pulls draw thousands of spectators through the gates Friday and Saturday evenings during the show and the noise of reeved up trucks and cheers and jeers from the crowds fill the night air. They say there’s nothing like a night pull and, judging from the reaction of our visitors, it has to be true.

Winners in 2018 Field Day of the Past 4-H Livestock Shows Announced The 4-H is a youth development program offered through the nation’s Extension Service for youth aged 8 to 18 and offers a variety of programs. As part of the program, the Goochland 4-H hosts Livestock Shows each year at the annual Field Day of the Past,

including beef, dairy, sheep, goat, swine, rabbit and poultry classes. The 4 -H also hosts the 4-H Challenge in which 4Hers tackle an obstacle course along with their animals and a Costume Contest. The 4-Hers put on a top notch event each year and are an important

part of our offerings. We thank them for all their hard work each year.

The club members and their animals also participate in a Costume Contest which proves to be a lot of fun for the kids.

Young pullers compete in Pedal Power Pulls In 2018, Mike and Shelia Roach expanded the Pedal Power Pulls to encompass all three show days. Many of our young visitors took advantage of the pulls and indulge their desire to compete. Youngsters between the ages of 5 and 12 can compete in age classes. Mountain Highway to bring gospel and bluegrass music to Field Day In a secluded corner of the Trade Show hall during the Virginia Association of Fairs Annual Convention, five family members took their place on a tiny makeshift stage to play for anyone who passed by. The hum of conversation and vendors seeking to sell their services to attending fair representatives filled the background. There were no microphones, no amplification and you had to

strain to hear the harmonies, The music was good, but it was really hard to tell if it was just good or really good.

“What do you think,” Sam Long asked me. “Do you think we should bring them to Field Day?” “I don’t know,” I answered. “I’d really need to hear them on stage,” Mountain Highway was

an option for additional entertainment at Field Day, but I wasn’t convinced just yet.

Fortunately for me, Mountain Highway was booked for the conference’s Showcase — evening performances that give selected entertainers at the conference the opportunity to perform.

Technical difficulties lead to several false starts, but once the band got underway any reservations I

had were quickly dispelled. From the vocal chords and instruments of these four siblings and their dad came the sounds of the traditional bluegrass and gospel music which made bluegrass legends such as Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley and Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs famous.

plays upright bass, and his four children, Victoria who sings lead and plays the banjo, Jack, playing guitar and singing lead, Rebekah, wielding a fiddle and singing harmony and Emily with her mandolin and also singing harmony make up Mountain Highway.

The family makes its home in Lynchburg, VA but has traveled extensively, taking their musical talents with them. They have appeared at Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Fest in NC, HoustonFest/ Galax, VA Jerusalem Ridge Celebration, KY and the Wind Gap Bluegrass Festival, PA. Mountain Highway will be performing at Field Day of the Past throughout all three show days.

Evergreen Elementary first graders return for fourth annual field trip

JimBob Holbrook as a postman teaches Evergreen Elementary first graders about the role of post offices in past eras.

Come this spring, what has become a tradition for the first grade classes at Evergreen Elementary

School will once again be observed. For the fourth year, the youngsters at the Chesterfield school will

be returning to Field Day of the Past for a school trip.

The trip enhances some of the lessons first graders undertake during the school year with hands— on programs offered by Field Day. Volunteers man eight stations including the Post Office, Educational Building, Grasberger’s Spoon Factory, Short Pump Garage, Short Pump Grocery, the Pullman Car and the Log Cabin and offer discussions and activities comparing the lifestyles of our ancestors to those of today.

Last year, more than 200 first graders with their teachers and their chaperones took part in this program. Students go home with souvenirs of their visits to each station and with the memories of a school trip unlike any other they have taken. We look forward to April!

Lamar Banister portrays one of many characters in his multi-faceted program A Turn of a Century. Banister’s program explores the many changes wrought in the years just before and after the 18th century became the 19th. Banister portrays a circuit rider, a robber baron and oth er personalities who personified this era. Banister will return with his program for the 2019 Field Day of the Past show. Commercial sponsors were among those most adversely affected by the wet ground during the 2018 show. About eight inches of rain fell during the week of setup on ground already saturated, resulting in a nightmare of mud and water.

By Sam Long Show Director It is with the deepest sincerity that I thank all of our corporate and commercial vendors and sponsors for understanding the issues we faced in dealing with the weather and wet grounds during the 2018 show. It was the wettest year I remember in all my years of setting up outside displays at Field Day of the Past.

On the Monday before

the show we had six inches of rain and another two inches fell the next day.

This was on ground that was already saturated.

There were three inches of water standing in the rodeo field and the Virginia High School Rodeo and the Field Day of the Past lawn mower pulls had to be cancelled because of the wet ground.

Some big truck and heavy equipment dealers had to downsize their

displays because the ground was too soft and impassible. Mud and mulch were the buzz word for the setup week.

Again, thank you for understanding the situation. You have, through the years, supported Field Day of the Past, and we greatly appreciate your participation.

We look forward to working with all of you in 2019, and hope for a drier year.

Tractors and more on display

Tractors—The Face of Change John Deere, Farmall, Minneapolis-Moline, International Harvester, Olivers stand wheel to wheel and front to rear in the Antique Tractor Display at the annual Field Day of the Past. This is the stuff of dreams for some individuals.

As much as any other single piece of machinery, the tractor changed the face of agriculture of America. In 1892, John

Froelich of Northeast, IA developed the first gasoline driven tractor that could move forwards and backwards. (Steam powered engines were being used to thresh wheat at that time).

Froelich shipped his machine to some fellow Iowans who quickly organized the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Co. but efforts at manufacturing the tractor failed misera-

bly and Waterloo chose to manufacture stationary gas engines. It was not until 1914 that the successful Waterloo Boy Model R was produced’ and enjoyed some success among farmers. In 1915 the Model N followed.

Three years later, however, Deere and Co. purchased the Waterloo Co. and the rest, as they say, is history.

Tractor pulls took place on Saturday but were rained out on Sunday.

The 2018 Field Day of the Past Tractor Pulls entertained visitors to the show on Saturday, Sept.

22, but, those who anticipated the pulls on Sunday were disappointed when the rains made the track

unfit for pulling.

Heritage Eats These cold, damp winter months demand that we seek some hearty foods to fix for our meals. One of the best meals you can eat in the winter is soup. It’s easy to make, warm to the tummy and filling, and it can be appropriate for lunch and dinner. At my house, a pot of soup, cooked in the morning, serves for the meals for the rest of the day. Left warming on the stove once it is done, family members are welcome to dip out a bowl or two whenever hunger calls.

Before refrigerating any leftover soup, let it cool down first.

Vegetable soup is both hearty and healthy and our version fits this bill.

Despite the bum rap potatoes have gotten because of their carbohydrate content, spuds are full of vitamins—B6 and C—in particular, fiber and folate.

Butterbeans, which is what Southerners call lima beans, also offer healthy benefits. They have high levels of a trace mineral called mo-

As for tomatoes, they have a wealth of nutrients and vitamins, including an impressive amount of vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K, as well as significant amounts of vitamin B6, folate, and thiamin. Tomatoes are also a good source of potassium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorous, and copper.

Corn, another food

which has a high starch content also contains beta carotene which forms Vitamin A in the body.

Another type of Vitamin A that is beta – cryptoxanthin is good for slowing down bone loss which is associated with age.

When the process of bole loss is slowed down it reduces the chance of rheumatoid arthritis as well, Corn is also rich in folate and folic acid, especially important to pregnant women. In addition to these benefits, corn is full of antioxidants which can help in fighting cancer. In addition corn is good for control of release of insulin in the body and a good food source to help reduce high cholesterol.

Another good thing about our vegetable soup recipe is that you can add other vegetables which are healthy — carrots, string beans, you pick.

By the way, vegetable soup has been proven to help in weight reduction.

As for the fat back in our soup recipe and the biscuits — this is the South, enjoy!

Homemade Vegetable Soup 8 medium diced potatoes 1 medium onion 1½ pint butterbeans, frozen or fresh 2 slices of fat back 1 Tablespoon salt 1 Tablespoon black pepper Cook until done, then add 2 quarts of tomatoes, 2 pints of shoe-peg corn, ½ cup of sugar and ½ cup of butter. Let cook for half an hour.

Biscuits 5 cups flour 2½ Tablespoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon soda 1 cup Crisco Mix above mixture with buttermilk until dough is smooth.

Then roll thin, cut and bake in 425º oven until brown. (Put dough in a Tupperware bowl and it will keep 2-3 days).

Add ham to biscuits for a hearty ham biscuits and soup meal lunch or dinner.

In Memoriam James E. Brooks, Sr.

James E. Lee, Sr.

LEE, James E. Sr. "Mann," 79, of Goochland, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018.

For many years James provided chickens, tur-

keys and other animals for the Field Day of the Past Barn Yard, coming early to deliver them, staying late to make sure they were settled in for the night.

James gave a lot of pleasure to visitors to Field Day over the years, particularly the young ones who especially enjoyed his animals. He will be greatly missed by all those who were accus-

tomed to seeing him and his animals at the show.

James was preceded in death by his wives, Shirley Ann Lee and Frances Shelton Lee. He is survived by his children, James Edward Lee Jr., Debra Ann Lee, John William Lee, Sarah Rigsby and Mack Wingfield; three sisters, Daisy Crowley, Beatrice Hobbs and Gladys Brooks. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Casey Lee Pearce; and three great-grandchildren, Evan, Ethan and J.T. Funeral services were held at Bennet Funeral Home’s West Chapel in Glen Allen on Nov. 8, 2018. Interment followed at Westhampton Memorial Park.

BROOKS, James "Jim" Elmo, Sr., 82, a retired truck driver of Glen Allen, passed away on Dec, 5, 2018.

Jim was a long time supporter of Field Day of the Past, being a part of the show since its very first years. He was a "Jack

-of-all-Trades" and would help anyone and fix anything, especially Volkswagens. He loved to travel cross country especially in the fall to the mountains. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. He was a great father, husband, papa and friend to everyone.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah A. Brooks; and a granddaughter, Taylor Tiller; his mother, Sarah Lloyd; and his dad, St. Elmo Brooks of Center Cross, Va. He is survived by his sister, Rose Waters; brother, Gene Brooks; wife of 63 years, Gladys Lee Brooks; four children,

James E. Brooks Jr., Brenda Tiller (Mike), Jeff Brooks (Gail) and Stacey Brooks; six grandchildren, Sierra Stumpf, James E. Brooks III, Jenny True, Ryan Tiller, Ronnie Brooks and Greg Brooks; ten great-grandchildren, and many, many very close friends. A funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 11, 2018.

Menefee, a native of Charlottesville, has lived in western Henrico County for almost 40 years.

She graduated from Southern Seminary Junior College and Salem College. Afterwards, she spent 20 years in the

banking industry.

Menefee and her husband Gary Menefee have two children — Anne and Bill, both of whom have volunteered for Field Day. Once warm weather returns, the pair will meet on the show grounds to again begin their annual routine of upkeep, repairs and other special projects.

Fallen Heroes Memorial makes stop at Field Day

The Fallen Heroes Memorial, completed on Memorial Day last year, made one of its first stops at the 2018 Field Day of the Past. The memorial, designed to resemble the American flag, consists of 6,940 dogs tags engraved with the names of those Americans who have fallen in the War on Terrorism. The 50 gold stars honor the gold honor families in all 50 states of the Union. This 28 foot wide by 6 foot tall American flag symbolizes the shape of the flag when draped on a fallen service members casket.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial is a project of Veterans and Athletes United, (VAU) headquartered in Chesterfield, VA. VAU is a all volunteer 501(c)(3) organization founded and run by veterans. VAU offers a wide range of programs for veterans .

Michael Felk, Field Day of the Past’s tinsmith will return in 2019 after a hiatus last year.

Tinsmithing came to the American colonies in the 18th century. Due to English regulations which prohibited the production of tin and iron in the colonies, all tin used in tinsmithing prior to the American Revolution had to be imported. After the Revolution, the ban was lifted and tinsmithing became more widely practiced.

Tinsmithing was easier than blacksmithing in that it did not require a forge or as many tools. Hammers, tin snips, shears, nippers, punches, a soldering iron and a lightweight anvil could usually be found in a tinsmith’s shop. Tin forms were meticulously hand shaped prior to the invention of a hand powered machine in the early part of the 19th century which would cut tin.

As in many trades, a master tinsmith often taught his trade to an apprentice who served under the master for a period of 4 -6 years.

By the latter part of the 19th century traveling tinsmiths were numerous; moving from town to town making useful household items or repairing old ones. Tinsmiths made mugs, dinnerware, coffee pots, creamers, lanterns, baking pans and even chandeliers.

Felk could be considered a modern day iterant tinsmith, traveling from town to town across the country.

While he does make many of the things a tinsmith of old would have produced, his primary goal is teaching crowds about this art.

His “shop” includers more than 30 assorted 18th to 19th century tools — a mini working museum where the master instructs his “apprentices,” answering questions and giving explanations as the process produces a useful item which is also a work of art.

Felk’s tinsmith “shop” will be located in the Heritage Area of the show grounds.

Rod Cathcart of Boots & Britches fame passes

If you keep up with us on Facebook you will have learned of the death of Rod Cathcart, aka Sheriff Britches of Boots and Britches fame, passed away on Aug. 29, 2018.

Cathcart, along with his sidekick, Bob “Deputy Boots” Barkwill sang to and entertained millions of people, young and old, for many years. The duo covered ground from

Massachusetts to Florida and from Virginia to Oklahoma showing off their 1923 Ford Dream Camper, singing old country hits and folk songs.

Cathcart’s dry sense of humor and innate kindness will be greatly missed.

Bob Barkwill will return in a new act to this year’s Field Day of the Past. Stay tuned for more details.

The Faces of Field Day 1999

Some things have changed at Field Day of the Past, both our events and attractions and those who made it happen. In 1999, hot air balloons were a part of the program. Insurance regulations have since changed that. Bill Hoitt served as both chairman of the Small Engines Committee and as the organization’s vice president from 1992 until his death in 2016. Rob Hancock worked for many years as announcer for the Field Day Track Pulls. It’s Child’s Play Denise Gammon arranged the furniture and people in one of the doll’s houses donated to Field Day of the Past in preparation for the 2018 show. The houses were donated to Field Day several years ago and they are on display during the annual event. Among the extensive collection of furnishing for the doll house are Christmas decorations with which the house can be outfitted for the annual Christmas celebration.

I’m sure you have all heard the expression “One monkey don’t run this show!” No truer words can be spoken when applied to Field Day of the Past. It takes many “monkeys”, which is what many of may feel like at times as orchestrating an event as large and as complex as Field Day can truly be a circus at times, or a zoo, depending on your perspective..

As much as we may feel like, or even resemble a troop of monkeys, its hardworking, dedicated volunteers who actually pull off the annual event each year. It takes people of all talents, skills and abilities to bring together the cornucopia of activities, demonstrations and events which take place on the show grounds each September. Despite what

many people think, this doesn't all come together in a week’s time, not even a month’s time.

Indeed, the work for a year’s event takes two years. As we plow through all the logistics of the current year, we are already planning and scheming for the next show.

Field Day is like a machine. Each part has to work correctly in order for the end product to exist. Our dreamers and “idea” people come up with schemes and designs, ideas and images and our hands on individuals either tell us it is going to

work, how it can be changed to work and, at times that it won’t work.

The good part about all of this is that one person can be a dreamer today and tomorrow he or she becomes the hands on person. You have to be versatile at Field Day, willing to work with your hands and get dirty today and tomorrow, put on your good duds and be the ambassador at a luncheon or community event tomorrow

Some of our volunteers show up on a regular basis — almost every day in the summer months.

Some can only put in a few hours here and there. Others are available only during the show days. Make no mistake, however, it’s not quantity by quality which matters most. What might seem like the simplest task at times can make the biggest difference in whether something will work or not work, whether its is a good idea or a “no go.”

There are so many good qualities about the volunteers who have decided to be a part of Field Day. They give of their time and talents and skills. We are (Con’t see Volunteers, p. 40)

Field Day sponsors are able to take advantage of the large number of visitors to our show and their many different interests. Field Day attracts approximately 45,000 individuals through the gates during the threeday show. On Fridays, senior citizens, school groups and those who are fortunate enough to have the days off come to be entertained and educated by the various operating displays. By 4:00 p.m., the crowds shift and the younger generation and hard core truck pull enthusiasts flock through the gates in hordes. This younger, more energetic crowd is looking for the noise, action and excitement the pulls provide. Saturday morning brings a new wave of show goers, — an eclectic mix of young, elderly, children, grandmas and granddads, engine enthusiasts, those looking to enjoy the carnival rides and games, rodeo fans, and lawn mower pull crowds. They come to see the tractor pulls, the 4-H Livestock Shows, the demonstrations in the heritage area — and the plethora of other sights to be seen. The truck pull crowds reappear in the evening.

On Sunday, families towing strollers and young children, visitors who are back for another day of fun and those who have just had a free day come to see what all the excitement is about.

There are many opportunities for companies to showcase their businesses. Sponsorships are available at every financial level, so if you are thinking your budget won’t accommodate our offers, you will be surprised. Watching John Bielik dip paper into a pan of water smeared with a swirling pattern of color, this paper marbling stuff seems easy. When you hear him speaking of surface tension, and paints that are wetter than water as he plans a particular design for his paper, you realize that this is more than a neat little hobby.

Paper marbling is the ancient art of creating splashes of swirling colors on paper by adding color pigments to oily water and transferring them to the paper. Some histories of Turkish paper marbling purport that the art originated in Turkistan in the 1200s and migrated through China, India, Persia and Anatolia. In Iran, it picked up the name ebru.

Suminagashi is the Japanese variation of paper marbling and legends trace its origins back to 1151. The Hiroba family claims that their ancestor, Jizemon Hiroba was inspired by the gods to make marbled paper. The legend claims he wan-

dered the country until he arrived in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, Supposedly, the water in this local was especially conducive to making suminagash and there Jizemon remained.

His family lives in the same region to this day

of his art. He is an artisan, instructor and historic trades interpreter.

Introduced marbled paper through old books in the St. Louis Public Library as a boy, Bielik sought an alternative to modern marbled papers for his bookbinding while in college.

He found it in the alum-free paper made

by Curtis E. Finley, who taught Bielik many of the techniques of traditional marbling.

Bielik learned to make his own paints and continues to develop a base of knowledge of paper marbling chemistry, techniques, and materials. He considers himself a preservationist of alumfree paper marbling with the goal to preserve the craft as it appeared before the abundant use of wood fiber in the papermaking industry of Europe and America. Bielik is an interpreter who has come to this place in his art through a background as a

Safety is not just for the Field Day of the Past annual show

By John Meola Field Day of the Past Safety Director Preparations are ongoing year round for our annual September event and we wanted to offer some seasonal and event safety planning tips to think about in advance.

Even though it seems a long ways off, we will probably be facing a long, hot summer.

Right now we are in the middle of winter. Cold air is usually dry. Staying properly hydrated is important year-round to enable our body’s cold and flu defensive system to function properly. It involves eating a well balanced diet of vegetables and fruits, soups and foods with a high liquid content. This is important for proper respiratory, circulatory and digestive system function. This becomes even more important as the temperatures warm. By show time next Fall, we will offer this important reminder again.

Slip and fall prevention is also important year -round, particularly in

winter when ice will form overnight on any weather-exposed surfaces. Proper footwear and attention to where we are walking is extremely important.

Carrying objects or holding onto toddlers can cause us to lose our balance. The same applies on our show grounds where we have a mix of surfaces, grass, gravel, wood, stairs, steps on and off rides, etc.

We highly recommend the use of a walking stick to add upper body stability on even surfaces. This is one of the first principles taught in Scout hiking class, remember?

Pedestrian safety around moving vehicles has been identified as a rapidly escalating category of accident.

A general safety rule is to wear light colors so drivers can see you more clearly, particularly at night.

For anyone in lowlight conditions, such as after sunset or before sunrise, a high visibility vest or other reflective

We can take a lesson from this safety measure, and apply it to our own safety, such as for kids walking to and from school, crossing parking lots, etc.

just like every organization, however, not every day is a good day. Some days things just don’t work like you want. We get aggravated at each other or loose our tempers at times (and the closer to show time it gets, the better the chance this will happen).

Perseverance seems to be the best defi-

nition of most of these folks. Last year’s rains, hurricanes, wet ground and red mud which stymied all of us at every turn was proof of this; At the end of the day, however, all of these different personalities come together to produce an event which is unlike any other.

Experience the truth about the Civil War at Field Day

By Ken Chandler Richmond Discoveries I have been setting up the American Civil War camp at Field Day of the Past for the past ten years or so. I bring a large display of Civil War artifacts, flags, musical instruments and weapons, and set up a camp that would look like a Union or Confederate camp in the early war years.

In addition to setting up the camp, we do programs on the weaponry of the war and offer cooking demonstrations from the period, as well as explaining lifestyles in general of the people of that era.

I feel it is important to be able to talk to people about the war from both the Northern and Southern views. It gives me a chance to show the flags, from both sides, and explain to visitors, many of whom do not know what the right names are and how they were used in battle. We explain where the flags came from and why they were originated.

I have always tried to teach the true history of the United States and not the myths.

I have been teaching American history and the Civil War for more than 30 years and still find it to be fun.

I am Vice President of Richmond Discoveries, Inc. We do tours of Richmond and other parts of the state and also special programs with historical characters. I hope that what I do will help people understand how important history is and why we need to know where we came from and not make the same mistakes that we did in the past. There is more to life in Richmond then just beer and bikes.

With 400 years of history in Richmond, we have a lot to offer.

Peter Amico, who was helping out the folks with Richmond Discoveries, explained the workings of a .58 caliber Springfield musket that was used during the Civil War in America.

Each year Richmond Discoveries offers a civil war encampment with weaponry and cooking demonstrations at Field Day of the Past.
