Editorials, Opinions and Other Stuff Dear Editor: As children we are taught to place our right hand over our heart and to face to the flag to say the Pledge of Allegiance, but what about the National Anthem? Well, there is a code on the books about this very subject. It needs to be pointed out that a code is not a law. It is a requested form of etiquette for when the National Anthem is played or sung. Why not make it a law? Simple. This is a country of freedoms. Our Rockville-Centerville Centerville Steam & Gas Historical Assoc.

freedoms allow us to choose whether or not we wish to show respect for our flag and our National Anthem. This may sound like our freedoms are saying we don’t care what people do, however, that would be wrong.

Our flag is a symbol of our struggles to become a country; a country we are proud to call ours. Our National Anthem gives a voice to our pride for the accomplishments our country has made. As Americans, we choose to show our respect to the flag and National Anthem because it has been earned. We stand for those

who no longer stand because they gave their lives for our freedoms.

We

place our hand over our hearts to show that our freedoms mean something to us. We face the flag to show our respect and in acknowledgement of what it represents.

I include the code so that

what is requested can be read and you can make an informed choice. We realize that there are many visitors to our county and we ask that they allow us the respect of quiet while we show our respect for our nation, as we should be showing to theirs when we visit.

36. U.S. Code §301National Anthem (a) Designation.—The composition consist-

ing of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem. (b) Conduct During Playing.—During a rendition of the national anthem (1) when the flag is displayed— (A) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note.

(B) members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute in the manner provided by individuals in uniform; and (C) all other persons

present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand over the heart, and (2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

Wally to grace 2019 Field Day of the Past Cancellation Stamp The Chinese New Year ushered in the year of the pig in 2019. At Field Day of the Past we ushered in the year of Wally. If you don’t know who Wally is, you haven’t been paying attention!

Wally has been such a successful Field Day ambassador that we will be honoring him by featuring him on the 2019 Field Day of the Past cancellation stamp. Each year Field Day develops its own cancellation stamp which is used in our post office during the show. Each outgoing envelope bears the special cancellation stamp which can only be found here.

The Field Day Post Office is an official postal

station during show days.

It is manned by retired or current postal employees.

All mail is stamped and cancelled in the post office and sent off to its various locations — around the world. Mail bearing our cancellation stamps has been sent as far away as Japan, Germany and Great Britain, as well as arriving in many cities around the United States.

Field Day of the Past envelopes bearing the cancellation stamp can be purchased in the Field Day Post Office for $1.

You can use the envelopes to send yourself or your family a souvenir from the show or just as you would use any other

envelope to mail bills and correspondence.

My daughter has mailed me one for years and they serve as excellent and unique reminders of our times at the show.

The post office was constructed by Field Day volunteers in the months leading up to the 1996 show. It has been in continuous operation on show days for the past 24 years.

When the Field Day Post Office opened in 1996, it was one of only two post offices in Virginia open on Sunday. That date was the celebration of 100 years of Rural Free Delivery in the U.S. The Field Day of the Past Post office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on

In 2019, the Post Office will again host photographs and memorabilia from World War II as well as histories from some of the local World II veterans. This is all a part of our effort to remember the sacrifices made by those who served.

Banister’s highlights changes in U.S. history during the early years of the 20th century All aboard! And get ready for a trip you won’t soon forget! What might it have been like to live through A Turn of the Century? You’re in one right now!!

Few folks realize how significant a change occurred for the US on the World Stage during the turn of the 20th century. It benefits us to look back at this time as it informs our view of the “Turn” which we are now experiencing.

This fast-paced costumed program covers the period of history roughly between 1875 to 1917 including the Gilded Age—a remarkable time of dramatic change from the last tragic Native American conflict to major technological and industrial developments into the Age of Flight! Banister will move through three illustrative costumes depicting the super-rich Robber Barons, to immigrant/ union worker, to a circuit riding lawman finalizing the “taming” of the Wild West—all while accentuating stops along the way through music developments with a variety of musical instruments and songs of the period (some vintage and some handmade by the performer).

These can include fourand six-string guitars, banjo, cigar box banjo, harmonica, spoons, jaw harp, bones, seat tapping and buck dancing, mandolin, ukulele, autoharp, melodica, fiddle and hambone if you count his body!!

Behind the scenes, Dixie Four Wheelers are movers and shakers at annual Field Day event

By Andrea Hollins When you think about Field Day of the Past, what are some of the first things that come to your mind?

Is it the sawmill or steam engines that take you back to the good ol’ days and put a smile on your face?

Or, is it the tractor pulls or even the truck and eighteen wheelers pulling the giant sled across the dirt track?

Or, maybe your young one grabs your hand, and drags you to the pig races or the amusement area where you can laugh and join in their fun, or maybe say “I told you so” when their little faces turn green because they jumped on the scrambler after just eating a hot dog.

Those things might be the first thing on your

mind, but the first thing you may see might be the John Deere tractors that will pull the fabricated buses and trams that carry you and your precious cargo to and from the front gate. This way you don’t have to walk in the sweltering heat, or if it rains, the muddy fields. Has it ever crossed your mind, however, who might be transporting you back and forth to your destination?

Those drivers are members of the Dixie Four Wheel Drive Club and they are driving tractors donated by James River Equipment in Ashland, Va. The Dixie Four Wheelers have been with Field Day since its beginning.

They started out as securi-

ty; watching over the equipment and other’s belongings; taking shifts, and riding around on their four wheelers all day and through the night making sure all was well. As Field Day grew… and grew… and grew, however, it got to be just a little too big for their little club.

Getting ready for the show is a year-long event.

Many volunteers from the community come together on scheduled workdays to get ready for the show.

With their tools and talents, the Four Wheelers came out and got to work on fabricated buses (aka: the Dixie Limo) and other trams that the tractors pull to make sure that they are always safe and in tip top shape come Field Day

weekend.

These gentlemen know their stuff. They are business owners, heavy equipment technicians, automobile technicians, contractors, heating and a/c techs, and so much more.

Tim Hollins is the president of the Dixie Four Wheel Drive Club, and a construction and forestry technician at James River Equipment. He has been a member of the club for more than 30 years along with his brother Al, Mike Hurst and Mike Warren who owns Warren’s Auto Repair in North Chesterfield.

Wilson, Curtis Lunderman and Josh Pavlock. Many of these members, along with their families, work hard all year using their time and talents to get ready for the big day.

Dixie also holds a horseshoe tournament and a corn hole tournament on Saturday and Sunday during Field Day weekend.

Don’t forget the permanent exhibits at Field Day of the Past With all the pulls and races, attractions, arts and crafts, kiddie programs, heritage events and other activities which go on at Field Day, it’s easy to overlook our permanent exhibits. There are more than 30 permanent building on the show grounds. Many of them house exhibits manned by volunteers who spend their weekend working hard to provide you an educational and entertaining experience. Be sure to visit each and every one and thank the volunteers for their hard work. Check out the Survival Guide in this issue for a history of these permanent exhibits.

Roger Smith works the bellows and the forge in the Rockville Forge & Repair Blacksmith Shop, recalling a time when the blacksmith was an integral part of a small community.

Jerry Canfield mans the Woodwright Shop where he patiently carves and works wood for items once essential in all households — not just bowls and spoons, but the wooden parts necessary to maintain farm equipment, furniture and other necessary pieces.

The large Corliss engine with its 12-foot flywheel powers the steam operated sawmill and other pieces of equipment in the Sawmill Building where Robert Bickley and a host of other “sawmill hands” spend a weekend cutting lumber on the Frick mill. There was a time when sawmilling was one of the major industries of Virginia’s economy and many local families made their living at the sawmill.

The Rockett’s Voting Precinct was the center of political activity in Goochland County for many years. It was moved to the Field Day show grounds in 2009 and an original ballot box can be found here. Today, the voting house is manned by the Goochland Historical Society where visitors can get a glimpse of political issues of the past and view artifacts from the Historical Society.

Sorghum Molasses Making at the “Sugah” Shack Lee Bendle stirs the juice which has been crushed out of the sorghum cane and is being cooked into a syrup. The sorghum cane for the Field Day of the Past demonstrations is grown by Monroe Johnson of Kents Store, VA and is cut by Field Day volunteers the weekend before the show. During the event, cane is stripped, fed through the press and the juices which run out are then cooked down and poured into jars to make sorghum molasses. Molasses making was once a common occurrence on many central Virginia farms. See how it’s done at Field Day of the Past 2019.

Alan Weber will be heading up the Field Day of the Past Consignment Sale again this year. The sale is scheduled to go on throughout the three show days. The Consignment Sale Committee accepts all types of merchandise to sell, including antique trucks, antique tools, woodworking machinery, construction tools and equipment, home improvement materials, antique tractors and more.

Sellers will pay a ten percent commission to Field Day of the Past for items sold for up to $1,000. A five percent commission will be charged for items bringing more than $1,000. If you have items you wish to sell call Alan at 804-740-2112.

The Field Day Consignment Sale opens at 8 a.m. daily during the show, Sept. 20-22 and closes daily at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Arrangements can be made for any large items which you purchase which cannot be immediately removed from the premises. Those arrangements can be made by consulting one of the Consignment Sale Committee volunteers.

Willy Hall’s Gravely Tractor collection on display at show

By Willie Hall This photo shows all my tractors lined up (at the 2018 Field Day of the Past). The 1948 Model L is the last one I restored.

The first one was my Dad’s 1950 Model L used on our farm in Glen Allen, VA. In my first show I showed the 1950, and that was all I had back then. It earned me a spot at the rear entrance of the show.

I made up my mind to restore one tractor a year and show each one with a different attachment.

Back then, someone told me “at my age, I would not live long enough to do that.”

Last year, I took two large flatbed trailer loads of Gravelys to the show. It has earned me a good spot near the front of the show and (the collection) can now be seen from the main road.

This year I am behind in restorations. I have a circular saw blade and a rotary tiller to show, and they will be unrestored. These seem to draw a lot of peo-

ple. I would like to show one with a chain saw, but do not have one yet.

Gary Hearn rode the old Massey–Harris binder when Field Day volunteers turned out to cut wheat in June. The 1930s binder has been patched and mended many times over the years but still manages to cut the wheat which is used for wheat threshing demonstrations during the annual show in September. Wally wanders far and wide

Wally Wallow has had a busy schedule over the last few months. It all began with a trip to Hatteras with the Dixie Four Wheelers and has carried him to a number of spots and events. In his journey this year Wally has visited the Keystone Tractor and Truck Museum, the Powhatan County Fair, Relay for Life in Goochland, Rassawek Spring Jubilee, and Blue Ridge Shores in Mineral, VA Upcoming appearances include the Louisa County Fair on July 26 and 27. Wally also

has several other places tentatively scheduled until show time.

We have had a lot of fun with Wally to date — passing out newspaper and Wally stickers, making new friends and visiting with old friends. Clothos Spinning Guild volunteers offer spinning, weaving and dyeing demonstrations in Heritage Area at Field Day of the Past Distaff side of your family… The old Silk Road… If your family name is Fuller, Walker, Dye … these all relate to what is going to happen on September 20, 21, 22, 2019 at the Pioneer Cabin.

A Towed-haired boy…. A girl with Flaxen Hair… a dog with its Hackles Up …. Are all terms that come from the use of flax.

Come to the cabin to see the flax that we grew this year in the cabin’s garden.

Volunteers at the cabin will process this plant, magically spinning it into Linen thread. Linen fabric comes from flax. Did you know that?

Beautiful pink blossoms turning into white cotton bolls on a bush that would

look great in anyone’s garden. But this year in the cabin garden we are growing brown cotton.

We might even have green cotton. We can’t tell right now since we have several more weeks of growing.

So come visit with us and find out along with those volunteers who will show you how we can spin cotton on a drop spindle.

Bugs, bark, flowers, mushrooms, leaves, roots and weeds. Onions, black beans, beets, red cabbage, coffee, turmeric and saffron. These are just a few of the natural sources that we can use to dye the threads and yarn being produced at the cabin.

Last year we dyed with a bug called Cochineal making beautiful violets

and red. We picked Goldenrod for yellows and greens. The local pokeweed turned our yarn into bright fuchsia colors.

Come visit our dye pots simmering over a wood fire and see what colors appear on our cloth this year.

Other fiber facts: The word Cloth comes from the Greek name of the first of the Three Fates – Clotho who spins the thread of life. Today, Clotho is represented by Central Virginia’s very active spinning guild of that name (see www.ClothosHandspinner s.com). The guild is providing the volunteers and some of the equipment and supplies being used at the cabin. Jan

Jan Thomas demonstrated the spinning of flax at the 2018 show. This year, Thomas coordinated volunteers from the Clothos Spinning Guild for demonstrations on the processing of fibers such as cotton and fax. The Clothos Spinning Guild can be found at the Log Cabin.

Revolutionary War revisited at Field Day

Buffalo Will and Pawnee Bill coming to Field Day of the Past in September Bob Barkwell (standing) and Mike Keating (at the wheel) will make their first appearance at Field Day of the Past in 2019. Barkwell and Keating AKA Buffalo Will and Pawnee Bill will arrive in their 1924 Hypomobile, outfitted with all the accountments for both traveling and some pickin’ and singin’.

Hupp Motor Car Company opened its doors under the direction of its founder Robert Craig Hupp. Hupp had worked for both Ford and Chrysler and by 1909 decided he had enough expertise to own his own company producing horseless carriage in Detroit, MI. The original investors in the company were not too please with Hupp’s desire to reinvest profits into new technology and new facilities. A few years after its start, Robert was ousted and his brother Louis took over. For the next score of years, Hupp’s sales rose quickly but, with a multitude of problems in the wings, the Great Depression hit and Hupp simply could not survive. It went out of business in 1939.

Barkwell and Keating have found this 1924 mobile and refurbished it to best fit the needs of a “band on the run.”

They will show up at Field Day to regale audiences with their repertoire of traditional country and folk songs. Buffalo Will and Pawnee Bill will be located across from the log cabin in the Heritage Area of the show grounds.

Bielik’s Paper Marbling demos return When John Bielik dips a simple piece of paper into a special solution he uses for marbling paper, the results are beautifully tinted leaves which ripple and shimmer with color.

Bielik demonstrates the skill and talent necessary to produce works of art in his paper marbling demonstrations at the 2019 Field Day of the Past. He can be found in the Heritage Area.

When we are not creating, organizing and leading tours, we send first person interpreters across the nation to educate through entertainment. Our impressions focus on historic people from Jamestown to World War II. With 400 years of history in Richmond, we have a lot to offer.

We have a Civil War camp that has been at Field Day of the Past for more than 10 years and we are pleased to announce a second camp. This camp is focused on the American Revolutionary War. The set-up will look like a typical Continental or British camp with people there to explain the camp site, the armies, or the era. On any of the days you may see Benedict Arnold, the Marquis de Lafayette, camp followers, or even Virginia delegates who are inspecting the camps.

As the Director of Operations at Richmond Discoveries and as a company we feel that it is very important to keep history alive. By adding the second camp we wish to show you some of the wonderful things we have to offer anyone who is interested in promoting and preserving both Virginia and American history, Be sure to visit this new attraction in the Heritage Area of the show grounds.

Lawn, garden pulls return to Field Day

The Lawn Mower and Garden Tractor Pulls will return to the 2019 Field Day of the Past event. In 2018, the pulls were cancelled due to excessively wet conditions, so these pullers are eager to get back on the track and show their stuff. Improvements have also been made to the track and there have been some changes in management. Look forward to some stiff competition. The pulls will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday with registration at 9 a.m. For details on classes, etc. check out bandtpulling.mysite.com. Rules can also be found on that page. Second blacksmith shop at Field Day features Scott anvil and forge

Richmond Discoveries Civil War Camp Richmond Discoveries’ Civil War Camp will return to the 2019 Field Day of the Past. Here you can experience life as a soldier from 1861-1865, from a demonstration of weapons and of the use of flags and drum signals on the battlefield to life in the camps: including food, music, games and personal entertainment, our soldier presents a complete picture of the average enlisted man in the Civil War. Visitors can also experience Civil War medicine with the medical camp set up by Hoytt Hill. Be sure to visit both attractions in our Heritage Area.

When Zenobia Scott of Glen Allen donated her father-in-law’s anvil and forge to Field Day of the Past, we quickly realized there was nowhere to put the items on display.

James Alexander Scott used the anvil and forge in his blacksmith business in Jackson Ward in the years around the turn of the 20th century. The cast iron Model #400 forge was manufactured in 1902

by Champion Blower and Forge Company in Lancaster, PA. and the anvil, which weighs in at 128 pounds, was manufactured in Sweden.

Volunteers Dennis Gammon and JimBob Holbrook decided to construct an additional blacksmith shop on the grounds to accommodate these donations.

Construction on the new shop began in late spring

and, with the help of Richard Gammon and John Meola, has been an ongoing project. The building will be completed by show time.

The new shop is located adjacent to the trip hammer building and will be used by Gary Evenson who mans the trip hammer each year.

Be sure to visit this new offering in our many attractions at the show.

The Field Day of the Past Truck Pulls, one of the show’s biggest attractions, is set to take place on Friday and Saturday evenings, Sept. 20 and 21 on the show grounds.

The pulls are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday nights. As these pulls always draw large crowds, we recommend that you come early and enjoy the rest of the show during the day and be there to snag yourself a good spot to see the pulls, particularly on Saturday nights.

Several new classes have been added to this year’s lineup. A list of classes for both nights is adjacent, along with rules for those who wish to participate.

Registration will take place in the parking lot across from The Main Pedestrian Gate and will close 30 minutes prior to the pulls — 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Pullers must pay to get in and are reimbursed in hook fees (DMP). For spectators, pulls are included with Field Day admission.

Sunday hours change in 2019, ticket prices remain the same Visitors to the 2019 Field Day of the Past should note that the operating hours on Sunday, Sept. 22 will change to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closing time for this day is one hour earlier than in prior years.

The good news is there will be no change in any of the ticket prices for this year, however. Field Day of the Past attendees will still be getting a bang for their buck.

Gate prices on Friday,

and Sunday will cost adults $10 per person. On Saturday, adult tickets will go for $15. Children 12 years old and younger will still be admitted free of charge all three show days and senior citizens 62 years of age and older can get through the gate for $8 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Two-Day passes will sell for $18 for any two show days and Three-Day passes will cost $28 for all three days — a savings of

$7 under single day tickets.

Block tickets will be available again this year. The price of these tickets cost $80 for ten tickets. These tickets can be used for any one show day. Block Tickets are sold in advance only.

They are not sold at the gates. Block tickets will go off sale at noon on Thursday, Sept. 19.

All camping spaces are primitive — no water or electricity is available in our camping area. Cost for camping is $25 per camping vehicle for the weekend. You must check in at Registration and get a camping spot number.

Remember, no mules, golf carts or other transportation are allowed to drive through the grounds during show hours beginning at 8 a.m. until the show ends for the day.

The only exception to this is wheelchairs and handicapped scooters.

Cole Amusements returns to Field Day Cole Shows Amusements Co. will return to Field Day of the Past this year, providing the carnival fun throughout the weekend.

Cole Amusements will open on Friday, Sept. 20 with all the favorite rides and delicious carnival foods: cotton candy, candy and caramel apples, funnel cakes, and sno cones.

Hours of operation are Friday: Noon to 11 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Pay One Price will be offered daily and regular tickets sales will also be available.

Capturing imagery — what’s in a picture?

While walking the grounds of Field Day of the Past, you grab your cell phone and start shooting pictures, hearing the reassuring sound that you have “gotten your shot.”

What is this noise and does the sound have a reason or history?

Daniel Trahan and Arthur Jenkins can tell you all about this, and provide a mountain of other information on the history of photography.

Trahan and Jenkins, who will be Arthur Jenkins snaps a shot. present at this year’s

event, will be glad to explain and, perhaps, demonstrate the original devices from which similar sounds emanated. Both will have many cameras on display representing the vast history of photographic endeavors through the years, from the early glass plate negative from more than a century past, to some of the more modern examples of film photography.

Modern photography, as we know it, began in 1826 in a small corner villa in France with the “wet” glass plate negative. These “wet” glass plates required extensive preparation immediately before use, and subsequent processing immediately after expo-

sure. The very earliest photographers were more than button pushers They were Renaissance men, skilled craftsmen with artistic flair. The skill sets required to be a photographer during the industry’s infancy ranged from being a chemist, who would work with the base elements to create light sensitive materials for negatives and prints, to being a furniture or cabinet maker for building the camera bodies. They worked with the basic instructions found in the scientific journals of the day, photographic cookbooks, to end up with the finished photographic equipment and basic chemistry recipes for

photographic processes.

“Dry” glass plates became commercially available later, and drastically reduced processing times and made travel photography possible. By the end of the 1800’s, George Eastman’s company, Kodak, was making photography easily accessible to everyone through his motto “You push the button, we do the rest,” and countless family memories were captured by the Kodak Brownie cameras.

Later, from the genius mind of Edwin H. Lind, the first instant film cameras, Polaroids, came into existence. The entire chemical process which once required a horse

drawn wagon as a darkroom for the photographic plate preparation and processing, could be held in the palm on your hand. In a minute, you could be holding a finished photograph, something that once required hours to do yourself or days of waiting for your photographs to be returned from the local camera shop.

Today, since the creation of the digital camera in the 1980s, almost everyone has some sort of camera at hand. If you do not own a dedicated digital camera, surely you have one on your cell phone or other electronic device. Millions of images are captured (Con’t. see Photos on p.39)

Field Day of the Past sponsors help support the many programs offered during the annual show.

One of the best ways to promote your business is exposure — getting the word out to all of your current and potential customers on your special products and services. One of the best ways to put your business in front of those potential clients is sponsorship at the annual Field Day of the Past.

Field Day sponsors are able to take advantage of the large number of visitors to our show and their many different interests. Field Day attracts approximately 45,000 individuals through the gates during the threeday show. On Friday, senior citizens, school groups and those who are fortunate enough to have the day off come to be entertained and educated by the various operating displays. By 4:00 p.m., the crowds shift and the younger generation and hard core truck pull enthusiasts flock through the gates in hordes. This younger, more energetic crowd is looking for the noise, action and excitement the pulls provide. Saturday morning brings a new wave of show goers, — an eclectic mix of young, elderly, children, grandmas and granddads, engine enthusiasts, those looking to enjoy the carnival rides and games, rodeo fans, and lawn mower pull crowds. They come to see the tractor pulls, the 4-H Livestock Shows, the demonstrations in the heritage area — and the plethora of other sights to be seen. The truck pull crowds reappear in the evening.

On Sunday, families towing strollers and young children, visitors who are back for another day of fun and those who have just had a free day come to see what all the excitement is about.

There are many opportunities for companies to showcase their businesses. Sponsorships are available at every financial level, so if you are thinking your budget won’t accommodate our offers, you will be surprised. Have a good time— Be safe at Field Day

By John Meola Field Day Safety Director Welcome to the 28th annual Field Day of the Past!

We hope to have good weather and a big turnout for our event again this year. Here are some safety reminders to help everyone enjoy their visit to the show.

If possible, arrive early! It’s cooler in the morning and generally a little less crowed.

Proper hydration is important. This involves more than simply drinking a bottle of water.

Poor hydration can cause dizziness, loss of balance and other illnesses, especially if anyone is taking prescription medications or has other health issues. Plan ahead and be prepared. It can be warm in mid-September.

Dress for Success!

Plan for lots of walking, so we recommend sturdy durable footwear, such as hiking boots or other athletic type shoes with

good ankle support. Be attentive when getting on and off rides, trams, people movers, anyplace where there are stairs or steps, or uneven surfaces.

Use handrails when present. Wear a hat or bring a parasol for shade from direct sun exposure. Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing for best ventilation. If you have a walking stick or cane, bring it.

They are handy when walking on uneven surfaces.

Many of the amusement rides do not allow back packs or other loose objects on a ride. We recommend you avoid carrying hard thermoses or water bottles or other similar bulky objects. Leave these with a trusted person or secure them separately while on the ride. Follow the safety instructions posted or as given by the ride operator. Use seatbelts or other safety devices as instructed. Do not attempt to jump or climb on or off the ride, even when stopped, until it is in

the proper loading/ unloading position.

Watch your step and use handrails when ascending/descending platforms or stairs.

Make sure your footing is secure on the treads.

We strongly discourage the wearing of flip-flops or other soft shoes on rides or on the show grounds.

Use sun-screen if you are sensitive to sunlight.

Do not leave pets in vehicles.

NEVER leave a child unattended in a vehicle.

Youngsters — Plan ahead for keeping track of your party. We recommend that a tag with a parent’s or responsible adult’s name along with a cell phone number be pinned onto small children in the event they become separated from your group. (We don’t recommend putting a child’s name on it). Instruct children to go to a Field Day volunteer (wearing a neon green vest), law enforcement or Goochland medics if they become separated from your group.

Exercise caution around animals. Do not walk or stand directly behind any animal, such as horses.

In the event of a medical emergency, Goochland Fire and EMS have squads located around the field. Notify a volunteer or other authority, and they will come to you. Please avoid congregating when persons are being treated.

The Dixie Four Wheelers took Wally Wallow with them to Hatteras, NC this past April for his first surf fishing tournament.

Dixie 4x4 Horse Shoe & Corn Hole Contests The Dixie Four Wheel Drive Club’s annual Horse Shoe Pitch competitions are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21 and 22 during Field Day of the Past.

The competitions will be conducted at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Please be at the Horse Show Pitching Pit, located across the road from the Smokehouse, at noon on both days to register.

Dixie 4x4 will also be holding Corn Hole Tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.

These competitions will start at 1:00 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Please be at the Horse Shoe Pit early enough to register for these competitions, as well.

Cost for participation in the competitions is $5 per person/per tournament.

The Dixie Four Wheel Drive Club hosts the Horse Shoe Pitching and Corn Hole Competitions each year as a fund raising activity for their organization. Dixie 4x4 also provides personnel to drive trams and perform other duties during the show. Express your thanks to them for their valuable help.
