Crates
Crates, a filmic experiment blending fiction and documentary through a proposal of performance cinema, tries to generate a powerful synthesis between the biography of the radical Greek philosopher and the exemplary life of Christ. Through this work, both Joskowicz and Leobardo tried to take their aesthetic, moral, and existential ideas to their ultimate consequences. Israel Rodríguez

Crates de Tebas (368-288 a. C.), se cuenta, un día decidió abandonar todas sus pertenencias y vivir como los perros, entregado a una vida miserable pero pacífica, sin sujeciones materiales ni morales. En 1986 Marcel Schwob llevó la vida de Crates a la literatura al incluir una alucinante biografía de este filósofo en sus Vies imaginaires. Ahí lo encontraron en 1968 Leobardo López y Alfredo Joskowicz. En 1970, pasado el remolino del movimiento estudiantil, la cinta fue finalmente rodada. Joskowicz la dirigió y Leobardo la protagonizó. Crates —un experimento fílmico que mezcla ficción y documental a través de una propuesta de cine performático— trata de generar una poderosa síntesis entre la biografía del radical filósofo griego y la vida ejemplar de Cristo. A través de esta obra, tanto Joskowicz como Leobardo intentaron llevar hasta sus últimas consecuencias sus propuestas estéticas, morales y existenciales.

It is said Crates of Thebes (c. 368 - c.288 BC) one day decided to abandon all possessions and live like the dogs, dedicated to an impoverished but peaceful life, without any material or moral bonds. In 1896, Marcel Schwob took the life of Crates to literature by including a mindboggling biography of this philosopher in his Vies imaginaires. It was found there in 1968 by Leobardo López and Alfredo Joskowicz, and, in 1970, once the turmoil of the student movement had passed, the film was finally shot. Joskowicz shot it and Leobardo was the protagonist.
