2010 season outlook overview The Eagles finished with a 36-18 record last season, including finishing 23-7 in conference play. Head coach Dave Tollett repeated as A-Sun Coach of the Year, while four Eagles were named to the All-Atlantic Sun First-Team. The Eagles enter their third year as a member of Division I, and have already claimed two A-Sun regular season titles. This season, the No. 25 Eagles will be eligible for Division I postseason play for the first time in the program’s history.

The Eagles look to defend their back-toback A-Sun regular season titles as they welcome 11 newcomers to a squad that returns seven position starters and four starting pitchers.

The Schedule Outside of the ten A-Sun conference foes, the Eagles face some difficult nonconference opponents. The Eagles’ 56 game slate features six games against ACC competition, four games against Sun Belt teams, three games against the Missouri Valley Conference and the Atlantic 10, two games against the Big 12, along with single games against the SEC, Big East, and Big 10 competition.

Head coach Dave Tollett talked about the Eagles’ schedule: “We wanted to play as tough a non-conference schedule as we could, knowing that this will be our first opportunity for postseason play. With games against Wichita State, Florida, Michigan, Clemson, Oklahoma State, and Miami, we think we’ve got one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. By playing quality teams throughout the season, we expect to be prepared not only for the A-Sun regular season, but also the conference tournament, and hopefully the NCAA tournament as well.”

The Eagles will open the 2010 season at home on Feb. 19-21 with a three-game series against Temple at Swanson Stadium before traveling south to face No. 12 Miami in the first of three meetings on Feb. 24. The Hurricanes earned a berth in the 2009 NCAA Regionals, posting a 38-22 record last season.On Mar. 3, FGCU hosts Big Ten power, Michigan, in the first meeting between the two schools. After that, the Eagles hit the road to face No.

27 Wichita State on Mar. 5-7 in one of the toughest venues in college baseball. The Eagles will play a three-game series against the Shockers, who were the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference champions and are perinnial Regional or better participants (1989 NCAA Division I Nat’l Champions).

The Eagles will play a home-and-home series with both Florida International and Florida Atlantic. FGCU will play host to FIU on Mar. 16 at Swanson Stadium and then head to Miami, Fla. on April 6 to close out the series. The Eagles will take on the Owls of FAU in Swanson Stadium on April 20 and the Blue and Green will head to Boca Raton, Fla. on May 11 to complete the pair of games.

The Eagles will hit the road to face No. 9 Florida on Mar. 24 in Gainesville, Fla. The Gators advanced to the NCAA Super Regional last season but fell to Southern Mississippi in two games. The Eagles have a 1-1 record against the Gators after each team earned road wins last season.

On Mar. 30-31, FGCU will travel to Stillwater, Okla. for a two-game, midweek series against 2009 NCAA Regional participant Oklahoma State.

On April 14 the Miami Hurricanes will make their first trip to Fort Myers for the Slammin’ at Hammond game. The game will be played at Hammond Stadium, home of the Fort Myers Miracle and Minnesota Twins spring training. The Eagles have dropped the previous two meetings, although the Blue and Green gave Miami a big scare in 2008, falling to the No. 1 ranked Hurricanes 4-2 in 11 innings.

Beginning Apr. 27 FGCU will play five straight non-conference road games, beginning with a single game at No. 35 South Florida on Apr. 27. Following that the Eagles will travel to Clemson, SC for their first-ever meeting with the No. 16 Clemson Tigers. That four-game series starts on May 1 and wraps up May 4.

The Eagles open A-Sun conference play on the road against USC Upstate on Mar. 12-13. The Eagles have an all-time winning record against nine of the ten A-Sun opponents they face; against Belmont,

About Ping! Baseball: Originally a labor of love and small clandestine operation in a basement just a stone’s throw from Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, Ping!Baseball has grown to become a robust group whose dynamic membership celebrates the athletes, excitement and emotion of the game.

FGCU is 3-3 all-time.

FGCU resumes conference play with a home series against ETSU on May 7-8, followed by a road game at Florida Atlantic (May 11).

The Eagles will travel to Jacksonville to do battle with last year’s A-Sun tournament No. 1 seed, the Jacksonville Dolphins, May 14-15. The Dolphins took two out of three games from FGCU last year, but the Eagles swept JU in 2008.

After a road game at Florida International (May 18), FGCU returns home to close out the regular season against A-Sun foe North Florida May 20-21. The Eagles swept the Ospreys in Jacksonville last year.

The 2010 A-Sun Championship is set for May 25-29 at Lipscomb’s Dugan Field at Marsh Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., for the Eagles’ first appearance. The 2010 NCAA Championship is set to begin on June 4 with regional play.

2010 season outlook the Lakeland, Fla. native as the fourthbest player in the nation and as the top left-handed starting pitcher. Sale earned first-team all-conference honors a season ago after posting a 7-4 record with a 2.72 ERA. The criminal justice major earned the Pitcher of the Year honor during the summer in the talent-rich Cape Cod league. Baseball America named Sale the Top Prospect in the Cape Cod league after the lefthander earned MVP honors in the league’s All-Star game.

Zach Maxfield burst onto the A-Sun scene a season ago, leading the conference in home runs with 20 while driving in a teamhigh 66 runs for the Eagles. The powerhitting first baseman grabbed preseason player of the year honors and picked up preseason all-conference honors after earning first-team all conference honors a season ago at the designated hitter position. The Northport, Fla. native ranked as one of only four underclassmen on the 2009 all-conference squad, joining his teammates Sale and Tim Roberson.

Tim Roberson joins his fellow FGCU juniors on the preseason all-conference team at the third base position. The West Palm Beach, Fla. native ranked second in the ASun in 2009 in home runs, just one behind Maxfield. Roberson ranked fifth in the league in RBIs a season ago with 18 multiple RBI games, including eight contests in which he drove in three or more runs.

Fun Fact

Although Chris Sale gets the most attention of the Eagles’ junior class, the quintet of FGCU offensive juniors has been very productive.

In 2009, Mikel Alvarez, Bobby Green, Zach Maxfield, Tim Roberson and Stephen Wickens combined for 55 home runs and 250 RBIs. The 55 home runs rated as more than 74-percent of the team’s total and the five combined to slug .543. The 55 round-trippers by the five junior starters rank better than 175 teams in NCAA Division I.

“BATTLE OF THE BIRDS” The FGCU baseball team will host the Miami Hurricanes on Wednesday, April 14, at 6:30 pm, at Hammond Stadium for the “Battle of the Birds.”

The contest with the Hurricanes marks the second consecutive season that the Eagles have hosted a BCS conference opponent in a Hammond Stadium event. In last year’s “Slammin’ at Hammond” event, the Eagles fell to the then #22 ranked Florida Gators, 12-3. The contest was played in front of 5,147 spectators, the largest single-game “home” event in FGCU Athletics history. A few weeks later the Eagles extracted revenge with a 17-5 victory over the then #9 ranked Gators on their home diamond up in Gainesville.

Hammond Stadium is a baseball venue located in the Lee County Sports Complex. The stadium was built in 1991 and holds 7,500 fans.

It is the spring training home of the Minnesota Twins, and houses the Fort Myers Miracle, their Class A Advanced affiliate in the Florida State League.

First Financial Employee Leasing will once again serve as the title sponsor for the Hammond Stadium event. First Financial’s CEO Bruce Smith, an alumnus of Miami, has been a long-time Charlotte County friend of Coach Tollett and a strong supporter of FGCU Athletics.

DAVE TOLLETT - HEAD COACH the Year after leading the Eagles to their second consecutive conference championship with an A-Sun record of 23-7. The Eagles were honored as four players earned All-Atlantic Sun First Team recognition including Chris Sale, Tim Roberson, Zach Maxfield, and Josh Upchurch. Sophomore Stephen Wickens was named to the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team while Jason Forjet earned a spot on the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team.

DAVE TOLLETT HEAD COACH Eighth Season

Dave Tollett is in his eighth season as head coach of the Florida Gulf Coast University baseball program.

He was named the first-ever head baseball coach in August, 2001.

Tollett has led FGCU to at least 35 wins in each of the first seven seasons of the program’s history, posting a school record 41 wins during the 2006 campaign. He earned his 200th career victory in 2007 and has a career record of 230-99. During his tenure, he has coached seven Division II All-South Region selections, two All-America honorees, and seven all Atlantic Sun players including the A-Sun player and pitcher of the year in 2008.

DAVE TOLLETT - HEAD COACH a pair of pitchers, in the Major League Baseball draft as Richard Bleier was picked in the sixth round by the Texas Rangers, becoming the highest player drafted from FGCU. A 1988 graduate of Tusculum College, Tollett made his mark as one of the top high school coaches in the state of Florida. During his 10-year stint as head coach at Charlotte High in Punta Gorda, he posted a 175-96 record to become the winningest coach in school history. In six of his last seven seasons with the Tarpons, his peers selected him as the FHSAA District 16 Coach of the Year. His teams won one district championship and made five appearances in the Florida High School Athletic Association state playoffs in a district that included perennial state powers Sarasota and Venice. In addition to developing numerous players drafted by professional teams, Tollett ’s teams have averaged over a 3.50 grade point average in the classroom over his last five seasons.

Tollett also spent five years as the Director of Coaching for the Southwest Florida Eagles, a developmental program that has turned out 24 Division I athletes and eight professional players. He served as the coach of the Southwest Florida All-Star team on nine occasions and served as the Florida Athletic Coaches Regional Chairman in 2002.

An active member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, he is the proud parent of twins Cal and McKenna and resides in Fort Myers.

Rusty McKee is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Florida Gulf Coast University baseball program. A 13-year veteran of college coaching in the state of Florida, McKee has been responsible for coordinating the recruiting efforts for the program as well as assisting head coach Dave Tollett with all aspects of the program.

During the 2008 season, FGCU’s first as a Division I program, McKee helped guide the Eagles to an Atlantic Sun championship, setting a record for wins by a first-year A-Sun program with 25 league wins. He helped develop A-Sun hitter of the Year Jason Peacock who was a 25th round selection in the 2008 MLB Draft.

Peacock posted the fifth highest batting average in league history and ranked among the nation’s leaders in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. FGCU hit .312 during the season, second best in the league. The Eagles were one of the top defensive squads in the

During the 2007 season, FGCU’s final season as a member of NCAA Division II, McKee helped lead the Eagles to their second consecutive 40-win season and appearances in the NCAA tournament. FGCU boasted one of the top offenses in the country as they hit .333 and scored a program record 512 runs. The Eagles drew an amazing 300 walks while posting a .432 on base percentage as a team. In 2006, FGCU set a school record with 41 wins while hitting .327 under McKee. They hit 54 home runs and had a .499 slugging percentage as they made their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. FGCU pounded out a school record 650 hits and advanced to the South Region final before falling to the eventual national champions. During McKee’s first season, the Eagles posted then school records 53 homeruns and .957 fielding percentage. During the season, their first as a Division I I member, the team hit .306 during the season.

A 2000 graduate of the University of North Florida, McKee was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida from 2002-04.

He also served as an assistant coach at UNF under legendary head coach Dusty Rhodes from 1996-2002.

During his tenure on the UNF staff, the Ospreys went to four NCAA Division II regionals and two NCAA Division II World Series.

McKee, who has also served as a manager in the Northwoods and MINK collegiate summer leagues, has coached 11 all-Americans, 16 allregion players and 26 all-conference selections during his coaching career and worked with more than 66 players who have played professionally, including three major leaguers.

McKee, his wife Traci and their son Brett reside in Fort Myers.

In addition, McKee helps direct all FGCU youth baseball camps, which welcomed more than 500 participants in 2009.

After finishing up his playing career in 2008 with the Eagles, Fibbe had a one year coaching stint with the Vikings of Bishop Verot High School. There, Fibbe was the head junior varsity coach while assisting Tom LoSauro with the varsity team.

THE ATLANTIC SUN THIS IS THE ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE For more than 30 years the Atlantic Sun Conference has stood for achievement with integrity in both the academic and athletic arenas with a focus on the balance between the two for its studentathletes. The A-Sun boasts a blend of the most dynamic and prestigious private and public institutions in the region, with all committed to the conference goal of Building Winners for Life.

The experience for a student-athlete in the A-Sun is supported by the entire university community, from coaches to faculty, and from the CEO’s to the athletic and academic support staff. Atlantic Sun studentathletes compete in outstanding facilities throughout the conference and in some of top markets in the Southeast. Eight ASun schools compete in the top 10 media markets within the conference’s five-state footprint. With All-America selections, National All-Academic honorees, teams and individuals qualifying for and advancing in NCAA Championship play, Atlantic Sun student-athletes achieve at the highest levels of collegiate athletics.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS For the second straight year, all 11 institutions placed at least 50 percent of its student-athletes on the All-Academic Team. The membership also established a new overall record of 59 percent of all student-athletes earning All-Academic status during the 2007-08 academic year.

Continuing a tradition of academic achievement, more than 57 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2008-09 academic year.

Fifteen student-athletes earned places on the 2008-09 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Teams. Belmont led the impressive institutional totals in the race for the All-Academic Trophy for the seventh time in eight years with 66.5 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better.

junior Kellie Sirus and Campbell senior Karlie Love earned spots on CoSIDA/ ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America teams. Lipscomb’s men and women track and field teams and the women’s cross country team ranked among the top 10 GPAs in NCAA Division I, in being recognized as All-Academic Scholar Teams from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Belmont men’s cross country team posted the fifth-highest GPA, according to the USTFCCCA. Wicke, one of the Bruins’ most celebrated student-athletes, shared the conference’s male Scholar Athlete of the Year award and earned the conference’s Postgraduate Scholarship. Mercer’s Chereese Rowe earned the conference’s second Postgraduate Scholarship. Wicke earned national acclaim as he became one of just two men’s basketball players to receive an educational grant through the NCAA postgraduate scholarship program. For his dedicated academic success and community service, Wicke landed on the Lowe’s All-Senior AllAmerica Second Team and was one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

The 2009-10 athletic year promises to be an exciting one for the Atlantic Sun as FGCU’s baseball program have gained access to A-Sun and NCAA postseason play.

The Baseball Championship leaves Florida for the first time in 16 years for Nashville, Tenn. and Lipscomb’s Dugan Field. These new additions and venues make the upcoming year a hotly anticipated season for the Atlantic Sun. Commissioner Ted Gumbart became the fourth full-time Commissioner of the Atlantic Sun Conference in January 2007.

He joined the A-Sun staff in November of 1991, as its first Assistant Commissioner. He was promoted to Associate Commissioner in 1997, and to Senior Associate Commissioner in 2004.

In his roles over the past 18 years, Gumbart has overseen the championships program, conference marketing, and business administration issues for the A-Sun. He coordinated the development of the A-Sun television package, managed the internal development of the IT systems, directed conference sports scheduling, and coordinated the conference officiating programs.

Gumbart has also directed numerous special projects during his tenure, including the introduction of ASun.TV in the fall of 2007.

Gumbart has extensive NCAA committee service and is currently a member of PROP (Playing Rules Oversight Panel).

He recently concluded a four-year term (2003-2007) as the A-Sun delegate to the NCAA Management Council, where he also served as a member of the Legislative Review Subcommittee and the Membership Subcommittee. From 1997-2002, Gumbart represented the A-Sun on the NCAA Championships and Competition Cabinet, where he served as a member of the Certified Events Subcommittee, the Administrative Committee, and chaired the Nominating Subcommittee. As a member of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), he served on the CCA Executive Committee in 2008-09 as subdivional vice president.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Economics & Business at Lafayette College (1984), and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Stetson University (1987).

Gumbart and his wife Mary Beth have been married for 16 years, and they have a five year old daughter, Taylor Suzanne.

The A-Sun is a blend of the southeast’s finest private and most dynamic state schools.

The FGCU baseball team used their bats to take down No. 9 Florida last season. The Eagles recorded 20 hits in a 17-5 win over the Gators on May 6, 2009 in Gainesville, Fla. Sophomore Jacob Barnes earned his win as an Eagle. Barnes threw four scoreless innings, and allowed only three hits, and struck out a season high six Gators.

Four Eagles recorded three hits on the night as Zach Maxfield and Tim Roberson combined for nine RBI.

Located adjacent to FGCU’s main arena, Swanson Stadium is fully enclosed and features one of the best playing surfaces in the country, surrounded by spacious dugouts and a press box directly behind home plate at field level.

A large electronic scoreboard is in left-center field with bullpens next to each dugout, batting cages down the left field line and permanent seating for 1,500 spectators. The stadium is known for the beautiful palm trees that line the main entrance to the facility, as well as surround the outfield fence.

Swanson Stadium has served as the home of the FGCU baseball program since its grand opening on February 1, 2004, a 20-2 win over Edward Waters College before a capacity crowd. In April 2005, the complex was renamed Swanson Stadium in recognition of two strong supporters of Florida Gulf Coast University and civic leaders - Duane and Cookie Swanson.

DUANE AND COOKIE SWANSON Duane Swanson, Sr. and his wife, Cookie, have donated generously for baseball scholarships and the construction of a baseball facility. Recently Mr.Swanson’s company, Raymond Building Supply, also gave a generous donation for The Outdoor Sports Complex. The roughly 20,000-square-foot building features offices and operations for soccer, baseball, softball, umpires and concessions.

“The Eagles are so blessed to have the tremendous support of the Swanson Family,” said FGCU Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh.“In particular, Duane and Cookie are like surrogate parents to our program. There is absolutely no doubt that FGCU Baseball would not have been able to have become a Top 25 entity without the fantastic backing of this unbelievably kind and generous couple.”

“We wouldn’t be here without him,” said head baseball coach Dave Tollett said. “When you have a place like this, as nice as this, it certainly helps in recruiting.”

The longtime residents of Ft. Myers are the owners of Raymond Building Supply and have supported a range of worthy causes throughout Southwest Florida for many years. Mr. Swanson is a founding board member of the Hillmyer-Tremont Student-Athlete Foundation, which helps FGCU attract and assist deserving FGCU student-athletes through scholarship support.

Off the field of play, providing scholarship support for student-athletes is extremely important to the Swansons. Duane and Cookie have established the Swanson Family Scholarship Fund. The new scholarship funding doubled the amount that was previously available for baseball scholarships.

The couple is happy to support FGCU’s athletics program. “The Southwest Florida community has been a great place for me, both personally and professionally,” said Mr. Swanson. “Cookie and I believe strongly in giving back to this community. We both enjoy our relationship with the FGCU Athletics Department, the coaches and student-athletes, and we saw the need to help the program as it was beginning.”

The Swansons believe sports benefit students on and off the field. “We believe in the role that athletics can play in both helping a young person grow and shaping their character,” said Mr. Swanson.

EAGLES ON DRAFT DAY

Justin Stiver became the first student-athlete from FGCU to get drafted by a major professional sports league when he was selected in the first day of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft IN 2006. The right-hander, was selected in the 17th round by the 2005 national league champion Houston Astros. He was the 519th player selected overall. Stiver posted a 6-5 record with a 3.81 ERA as the top starter for the Eagles.

Jason Kiley was selected in the 25th round with the 784th pick by the New York Yankees in 2007. Kiley finished his career as the leader in all-time wins at FGCU with 25. In his last season, he led the staff with 87.2 innings pitched while winning seven games. Kiley struck out 84 batters, and posted a 3.49 ERA and was a second team all-region selection by Daktronics.

The Cincinnati Reds selected Eagles’ third baseman Jason Louwsma in the 29th round with the 864th overall pick in the 2006 Major League Baseball Amatuer Draft in 2006. Louwsma finished his senior season at FGCU hitting .361, with 86 hits, 28 doubles, 10 homeruns, and a team-high 74 RBI. He was also selected to the 2006 National College Baseball Writer’s Association NCAA Division II All-South Region Team and the Rawlings All-South Region Second Team. In just two years at FGCU, Louwsma set career records for most doubles (47), and homeruns (23). He started every game for the Eagles in his two years and finished with a lifetime batting average of .373.

Luis Pardo became the third FGCU baseball player to get drafted by a major professional sports league when he was selected in the 9th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft in 2007. This is the highest any Eagle has been drafted. In his last season for the Eagles he went 5-3 and posted a 2.93 ERA. Pardo struck out 87 batters in 76.2 innings while appearing in 18 games with 10 starts.

2010 FGCU BASEBALL BACK-TO-BACK REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS

Eagles on Draft Day Casey Coleman became the second FGCU pitcher to be taken in the top 15 rounds of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft in 2007. Coleman was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round with the 461st pick. Coleman , one of the top two-way players in the Atlantic Sun finished his last year with the Eagles, posting a 4.11 ERA and 7-3 record. His ERA was 10th best in the league. He pitched 8.0 innings in a 6-4 win over FGCU’s first win over a ranked opponent as he defeated #25 UCF. He tossed 70.0 innings on the year and struck out 58 batters. He also played third, second and shortstop while hitting .312 with five homers while driving in 32 runs in 173 at bats.

Richard Bleier was drafted by the Texas Rangers with the 183rd pick in the 6th round. Bleier was named ASun Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference in wins, ERA, complete games and innings. He was the only unanimous selection to the A-Sun’s All-Conferece 1st Team. He was dominant during the 2008 campaign, finishing with a 7-1 record and a 2.09 ERA

2008 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Jason Peacock was selected by the Florida Marlins with the 778th pick in the 26th round. In 2008, Peacock had a .434 average which was the sixth best average in league history.

He was among the national leaders in batting average and on base percentage as he was in the top 10 in NCAA Division I in both categories. Peacock was one of the most feared hitters in the Atlantic Sun this season and was 1st Team All-Conference selection in addition to being named Player of the Year.

FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY

FGCU Student Union Florida Gulf Coast University, with its innovative programs, technology friendly campus, and outstanding faculty, is one of the most exciting educational environments in America.

FGCU, a member of the State University System of Florida, is a comprehensive university created to address the educational needs of the rapidly growing Southwest Florida population. Classrooms showcase state-of-the-art multimedia instructional systems that feature Internet access, document cameras, and audio and video presentations.

Florida Gulf Coast University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees. FGCU received initial accreditation by SACS in 1999.

The history of Florida Gulf Coast University is a visionary one built on support for providing higher education opportunities in Southwest Florida. Area citizens began the initiative to bring a state university to this part of Florida, and their early requests were quickly supported by elected officials at the local and state levels. With support from the Florida Board of Regents and the full Florida Legislature, a new university was born.

The Board of Regents formally recommended in January 1991 the development of Florida’s tenth state university to be located in Southwest Florida; and, in May 1991, then Governor Lawton Chiles signed the legislation authorizing the new university. Southwest Florida’s support for a university was never more evident than during the next year, when private landowners offered more than 20 gift sites for the university campus. In early 1992, the Board of Regents selected the site offered by Ben Hill Griffin III and Alico, Inc. of 760 acres of land located just east of Interstate 75 between Alico and Corkscrew Roads.

Roy McTarnaghan was named founding university president in April 1993. Initial staff were hired that summer, and the university’s academic and campus planning began in earnest. Plans for the first phase of campus construction were unveiled in February 1994; and shortly thereafter, the Florida Legislature named the institution as Florida Gulf Coast University. The vision for the university was one which would address emerging higher education needs for the 21st century, including the use of technology in the learning/teaching process and multi-year contracts as an alternative to faculty tenure. The Board of Regents approved an agreement in May 1995 with the United Faculty of Florida allowing FGCU to offer a contract system for faculty.

Campus groundbreaking was held on November 28, 1995, with more than 600 people participating in the celebratory event for Southwest Florida. With aggressive academic program and campus development schedules slated to culminate in an opening day of August 25, 1997, the early staff and faculty were busy meeting deadlines every month. Inaugural degree programs were approved by the Board of Regents in March 1996. The FGCU Foundation, a private fundraising arm of the university, gained extraordinary financial support for an institution which at the time could only be seen on a drawing board. Faculty throughout the country were attracted to FGCU for the opportunity to offer higher education in new and innovative ways.

FGCU The first FGCU student, Mariana Coto, was admitted in January 1997; and she participated in the historic ribbon cutting on the university’s August 25, 1997 opening day. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools awarded FGCU accreditation candidacy later that year, and a comprehensive self-study was launched. The first commencement was held in May 1998, with 81 FGCU graduates. In August 1998, the first phase of student housing opened. In September, Founding President McTarnaghan announced his intention to step down on May 1, 1999.

FGCU’s second commencement ceremonies, held May 1999, marked the last official act of the founding president, as well as the graduation of 417 students. The Board of Regents launched a national search held during the spring and summer for FGCU’s second president; and the university received official notification in June 1999 that it had achieved, in record time, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

In July 1999, the Board of Regents named William C. Merwin as FGCU’s second president. President Merwin arrived on campus for his first day on September 16, 1999. He immediately initiated a participatory strategic planning process for students, faculty, and staff to carry the institution to its next stage of development.

ACADEMICS: Six colleges offer over 50 undergraduate degree programs and 20 graduate degree programs in Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health Professions and Professional Studies. Business, criminal justice, nursing, education and communication are among the most popular.

STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO: With more than 900 full-time faculty and staff employed, FGCU features small class sizes and individual attention to every student at an 13:1 ratio.

ADMISSIONS: FGCU has a rolling admission policy. Freshmen are encouraged to apply six to eight months before anticipated enrollment. FGCU admits approximately 60 percent of freshman applicants. Most students accepted possess a 3.39 high school grade point average and test scores of at least 21 on the ACT and 1050 on the SAT I. FGCU invites interested students to the Eagle EXPO Open House conducted annually in October.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE/SCHOLARSHIPS: Students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. To apply for institutional scholarships, students should use the online application available through the Office of Financial Aid website. FGCU automatically considers all students admitted by February 15 for Office of Undergraduate Admissions scholarships, which are based on an excellent academic record. In 2004-05, 67 percent of FGCU students were awarded some form of financial assistance.

STUDENT BODY: FGCU’s growing enrollment tops 11,200 students. Students come from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and over 70 countries.

“THE CITY OF PALMS” In the late 1800s, Tootie McGregor and Thomas & Mina Edison began the beautification of Fort Myers. Imported Royal Palms were planted along Riverside Drive, later renamed McGregor Boulevard.

These magnificent Royal Palms, some towering at 75 feet, give the City of Palms its nickname.

Incorporated in 1886, Fort Myers is the center of a popular tourist area in Southwest Florida and the seat of Lee County. It is located about 120 miles south of Tampa at the meeting point of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caloosahatchee River. Fort Myers was the frequent winter home of Thomas Edison and is the current home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins spring training camps.

The first known resident of what is now Fort Myers was Manuel Gonzalez, a Spaniard from the province of Asturias, who came via Cuba in the 19th century.

Fort Myers, built in 1850 as a military fort to fend off Seminole Indians that were massacring the area's few settlers, was named after Col. Abraham C. Myers, who was stationed in Florida for seven years and was the son-in-law of the fort's establisher and commander. In 1858, after years of elusive battle, Chief Billy Bowlegs and his warriors were persuaded to surrender and move west, and the fort was abandoned. Billy's Creek, which flows into the Caloosahatchee River and runs between The Beau Rivage Condominiums and Alta Mar, was named after a temporary camp where Billy Bowlegs and his men awaited ships to take them west.

The fort was abandoned until 1863 when a small number of Federal troops re-occupied the fort during the Civil War. In 1865 the fort was attacked unsuccessfully by a very small group of Confederates. After the war, the fort was again deserted.

The first settlers arrived in 1866, but it wasn't until 1882 when the city experienced a significant influx of settlers. By 1885, when Fort Myers was incorporated, it was the second largest city only to Tampa on Florida's west coast south of Cedar Key - even larger than Clearwater and Sarasota, also growing cities at the time.

Fort Myers first became a nationally known winter resort with the building of The Royal Palm Hotel in 1898. The real spark of the city's growth was the construction of the Tamiami Trail Bridge built across the Caloosahatchee River in 1924. After the bridge's construction, the city experienced its first real estate boom and many subdivisions sprouted around the city.

FORT MYERS The Florida of days long past, with unspoiled white sand beaches, exotic wildlife and lush subtropical foliage, still can be found on the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel in southwest Florida.

Known as Florida’s tropical island getaway, this paradise is a favorite vacation spot because of its feel of old Florida that no longer exists in many areas. In addition to the beautiful natural environment, active travelers are pleased to find an abundance of golf, tennis and watersports, as well as some unusual attractions.

Lee County embraces nine distinct areas, each with its own unique character. Best known are Sanibel and Captiva islands, connected to the mainland by an alluring threemile-long causeway and, to each other, by a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bridge at Blind Pass.

Sanibel is known worldwide for its shelling. More than 400 varieties of shells litter the beaches, and particularly can be found after an especially high or low tide. For most visitors, however, shelling is merely a delightful excuse to enjoy hours of sun worshipping along some of the finest shoreline in North America. Interesting shops, restaurants, and art galleries dot the road from the Sanibel Lighthouse to Tarpon Bay Road.

On the way to Captiva Island, located toward Sanibel’s northern tip, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is home to many exotic species of birds and plants. A four-mile drive with access to walking and canoe/kayak trails offers outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities. The refuge occupies more than half the island.

The main attraction on Captiva is that there are none. Many people wile away the hours in one outdoor endeavor or another. It was here that Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of the famous aviator, wrote her best-selling book, “A Gift from the Sea.” Further south, Estero Island, home of Fort Myers Beach, long has been recognized as one of the “world’s safest beaches” because of its gently sloping shoreline. The sand is particularly soft and white, akin to powdered sugar. Especially suited for family vacations, Estero offers every imaginable water toy, from windsurfer to catamaran and parasailing. Numerous marinas operate boating and fishing charters. Local restaurants benefit from the catch, which generally includes red snapper and grouper.

Anyone suffering from island fever can find instant relief by paying a call to the “City of Palms,” in Fort Myers, with its charming downtown historic district and expanding hub of urban activity that extends to shopping malls, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Inventor Thomas Edison and his friend, automobile manufacturer Henry Ford, decided early on to make their winter homes in Fort Myers. Today visitors tour their neighboring estates with Edison’s botanical gardens, laboratory and museum.

During Edison’s 46 winters in Fort Myers, he and his wife Mina hosted well-known house guests like industrialist Harvey Firestone, President Herbert Hoover and cereal king John Harvey Kellogg.

Henry Ford purchased his quaint home, “Mangoes,” in 1916 to spend the winter months visiting Edison. The two properties were separated by a fence the two families named “The Friendship Gate.”

Other in-town attractions include the Southwest Florida Historical Museum, downtown river cruises, and the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium. Shell Factory in North Fort Myers and Eden Vineyards, the country’s southernmost bonded winery, to the east are also popular stops. For the sports minded, public golf courses and tennis courts make southwest Florida some of the best playing turf in the state.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Randy Popple, CSCS in entering his third year with FGCU. He oversees all aspects of strength and conditioning for every athletic team at FGCU. His duties include designing and implementing strength, conditioning and speed programs for all FGCU athletic teams.

Popple, a 1987 graduate of the University of Florida, received his Bachelors degree in Exercise and Sports Science while working as a student athletic trainer. In 1986 Popple served as the head student athletic trainer working with the Gator football team. Immediately following his graduation in 1987 as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at the University of Florida. In 11 years as an assistant Popple worked with; Football, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Golf, Women’s Soccer, and Gymnastics.

During his tenure at Florida the teams Popple worked with won numerous SEC Championships, national titles in football and women’s soccer, and appeared 3 times in the college world Series for baseball. In 1998 Popple left Florida to become the Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball Club. Popple held that post for 9 seasons, from 1998 until 2006. The Twins won 4 Divisional Titles and appeared in the 2002 ALCS. In 26 years in collegiate and professional sports Popple has worked directly with many professional and Olympic athletes such as Emmit Smith, Dara Torres, David Eckstein, Johan Santana, Torii Hunter, and Joe Mauer. Popple is an active member of the National Strength Conditioning Association (NSCA) and holds his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification from the NSCA as well.

He and his wife Kathy have 4 children, Hannah age, 13 Carter, 11 Keegan, 7 and Christopher, 6.

Head Athletic Trainer Michael Estes, MS, ATC, LAT, under the supervision of Head Team Physician Dr. James Guerra, directs the FGCU Sports Medicine-Athletic Training Staff that offers the most comprehensive health care with a special emphasis placed on injury prevention (Prehab) methods. The sports medicine-athletic training staff offers daily services and care for all FGCU intercollegiate athletes.

It is the goal of the sports medicine-athletic training staff to provide the student-athletes, participating in intercollegiate athletics at FGCU the highest standard of medical care possible. This care is provided both on the field and in the athletic training facilities.

The health of every student-athlete at Florida Gulf Coast University is the primary concern of the FGCU sports medicine-athletic training staff, a group that covers every facet of comprehensive healthcare. From emergency medical care through the functional return to play, the sports medicine-athletic training staff serves the many needs of the FGCU student-athletes. The staff is constantly updating knowledge on the latest in sports medicine and athletic training techniques through seminars and clinics.

The athletic training staff consists of National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATA) certified and Florida statelicensed practitioners in cooperation with orthopedic, podiatric and internal medicine physicians. Under the guidance of Assistant AD/Head Athletic Trainer Michael Estes, MS, ATC, LAT, and Head Team Physician Dr. James Guerra, the FGCU sports medicine-athletic training staff offers the most comprehensive health care with a special emphasis placed on injury prevention (Prehab) methods. FGCU student-athletes receive highly specialized medical care when required from orthopedist and head team physician Dr. James Guerra. Aside from the team physicians, FGCU student-athletes have priority access to all services of the NCH Healthcare System and other consulting specialty physicians. They provide a comprehensive team approach in the delivery of health care service to the FGCU student-athletes.

Located on the first floor of Alico Arena, the spacious main sports medicine-athletic training facility offers the finest available equipment for the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Located in this facility are a hydrotherapy area, treatment/rehabilitation area, functional rehabilitation area, private physician exam room, and a taping/first aid area.

The opening of the second athletic training facility occured in January 2008 within the FGCU Outdoor Sports Complex. Located in this facility is a taping/first aid area, treatment/rehabilitation area, hydrotherapy area and a private office/physician exam area along with the Sports Medicine staff.

Together these two facilities provide FGCU student-athletes with the finest in comprehensive health care while competing at FGCU.

Outdoor Sports Complex OSC VIP Suite

Outdoor Sports Complex Facts The building sits just east of Alico Arena’s parking lot and north of the recently completed soccer field. The grand opening took place February 28, 2008.

The 20,000-square-foot complex houses coaches’ offices, locker rooms, showers, laundry facilities, lounges, conference rooms, and study space for the men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and softball teams, and offices for the men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and the women’s swimming and diving teams.

The spacious VIP Suite is a spot that’s likely to be in great demand for all sorts of events. It sports an attached kitchen and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the baseball field. It can accommodate up to about 80 people for a broad range of activities, including sporting event receptions and conferences requiring PowerPoint presentations.

Besides well-appointed locker rooms and offices, there are two rooms devoted to study, a vital aspect of the Athletics program. Student-athletes must maintain high GPA’s in order to play.

PRESIDENT WILSON G. BRADSHAW Wilson G. Bradshaw was appointed as the third president of FGCU by the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees on August, 25, 2007.

“This is certainly one of the best days of my life. Thank you to the community, the board and the University.” Bradshaw said. “This was a grueling but honest process. A lot of people who cherish this University did a lot of work on its behalf. I am so pleased to be the next president of this fine institution. I can’t imagine a finer day in my life. The last thing I would like to say is in terms of a pledge. Now that I have been named the next president of FGCU, I promise I will give you my best. Thank you so much.”

The FGCU 13-member Board of Trustees made the selection of Bradshaw unanimous, many citing his track record as a builder, a problem solver and a motivator.

“Dr. Bradshaw has an extraordinary amount of energy. He has the emotional energy, the experience and the vision to lead this institution,” chairman Scott Lutgert said.

Trustee Michael Villalobos said, “Dr. Bradshaw has the dynamics I think we need. He has the out of the box thinking we will need in the next decade.”

Trustee Larry Hart said, “Dr. Bradshaw has all of the tools he needs to get in the automobile and drive it.”

Bradshaw, before receiving the president position at FGCU, was the president at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minn., where he was also a professor of psychology and a full member of the graduate faculty. From 1995 to 2000, he served as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

From 1990 to 1995, Bradshaw was the vice president and dean for Graduate Studies and Research at Georgia Southern University. He also served as professor in psychology at Georgia Southern University. He held several titles at Florida Atlantic University including dean of Graduate Studies and tenured associate professor in psychology.

Bradshaw earned a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980, a Master of Arts in experimental psychology from Florida Atlantic University in 1973 and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Florida Atlantic University in 1971.

In 1981, Bradshaw was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship for “Laboratory of Neural and Endocrine Regulation” from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 2001, he attended the Harvard Presidents’ Workshop on Fundraising, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) New Presidents’ Academy in 2002.

Bradshaw’s career in academia includes a wide spectrum of educational posts including assistant professor of pharmacology at Florida A&M University/VA Medical Center, instructor of physiology at the Wright State University School of Medicine in Ohio, and instructor at the University of Pittsburgh.

Bradshaw is widely published in professional periodicals and journals. His contributions include published articles in USA Today, Florida Neuroendocrine Society and Science 194.

In the research arena, Bradshaw has been granted more than one million dollars for academic study in several areas including math, science, computers and technology education; microbiology for health education; and neuroscience. He has been honored with several professional awards including the Spurgeon Award for career excellence, exceptional community service, and serving as role models for young people.

He and his wife, Jo Anna, reside in Estero and have three adult sons.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS KEN KAVANAGH Ken Kavanagh, 49, begins his first year as Director of Athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University, having accomplished a great deal in his career to date. Kavanagh, the second full-time athletic director in school history, began his duties at FGCU in June of 2009.

Kavanagh, who came to FGCU after 13 years at Bradley University, was appointed to his position on May 7, 2009 by FGCU President Dr. Wilson G. Bradshaw.

The final year in Kavanagh’s first decade on Bradley’s “Hilltop” will go down as one of the greatest all-around years in BU Athletics history.

During the 2005-06 season, a school-record three teams earned NCAA Tournament invitations, beginning with the third at-large selection for the soccer program in the fall and continuing with the men’s basketball team’s historic run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in March that included victories over nationally ranked Kansas and Pitt. In addition, the women’s golf team won its fourth Missouri Valley Conference championship in eight years to gain its third trip to the NCAA Regionals. In 2007-08, Men’s Soccer reached a milestone “Elite Eight” appearance and men’s basketball also achieved a runner-up finish in the 2008 initial College Basketball Invitational (CIT).

Most recently, in 2008-09, the Braves witnessed benchmark success with their first ever Missouri Valley Conference tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth and victory in softball, a runner-up finish in the inaugural Collegeinsider.com (CIT) post-season men’s basketball tournament and a record 21 victories in women’s basketball.

While the Braves enjoyed successes on the playing field with Kavanagh, Bradley’s student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. For eight consecutive years, Bradley led the Valley in federal graduation rate (77 percent) and remained well ahead of the curve in the NCAA’s new Academic Progress Rate, receiving public recognition for its APR success in soccer, men’s golf, women’s tennis and volleyball.

During Kavanagh’s tenure at Bradley, the Braves accumulated 31 Academic All-America or Scholar All-America awards. BU also achieved new single game, regular season and attendance marks in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, and volleyball under his direction, as well as record revenue streams from external sources.

Kavanagh helped Bradley’s Athletic facilities make significant strides during his tenure: most notably, the baseball team’s move to O’Brien Field (home Stadium of the Chicago Cubs Class “A” affiliate the Peoria Chiefs) in 2002 and the subsequent transformation of the old ballpark into Shea Stadium. Opened in August of 2003, this soccer exclusive venue is one of the finest of its kind in the entire Midwest. Additional enhancements included aesthetic aspects of Carver Arena (home venue for men’s basketball) and Haussler Hall (athletic complex), locker room improvements for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball, as well as upgrades to the sports medicine training, department offices, Bradley Park softball complex and the realization of the Markin Tennis Courts. Most recently, Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse underwent a transformation during the summer of 2004, highlighted by the construction of a new strength and conditioning facility, satellite training area, women’s basketball offices and student-athlete study center.

Under Kavanagh’s direction in 1996, Bradley Athletics established the BU B.L.A.S.T. (Building Leadership And Supporting Teams) NCAA Life Skills Program, which is designed to enhance the total being of Braves’ student-athletes. It involves activities ranging from personal, social and career development to community service projects and leadership opportunities. Also, Bradley was commended in March of 2002 by U.S. News & World Report for having the seventh-best College Sports Program in terms of gender equity and the athletic department’s effort for equality was further recognized in 2007 when Bradley received an “A” from the Women’s Sports Foundation for its gender equity performance.

Kavanagh served a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Committee, a panel that he chaired in 2007. This body is responsible for selecting the 48 teams that compete in the NCAA Tournament and oversees the administration of the event.

He served two terms as the vice-president of the Missouri Valley Conference joint committee and was also a member of the MVC’s Executive and Media/Marketing Committees. He also chaired the MVC’s Championship and Officiating Committees and was a member of the MVC’s Gender Equity, Sportsmanship and Conference Relations Committees.

One of the founders of the I-AAA Athletic Directors’ Association in 2000-01, Kavanagh is the Third Vice-President for the organization, which is comprised of the 101 non-football playing Division I member institutions and nine related conferences.

In recognition of his accomplishments at Bradley and as a leader in college athletics, Kavanagh was named the Central Region Division I AstroTurf Athletic Director of the Year during the 2008 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics convention in Dallas.

Also active in civic organizations, Kavanagh has previously served on the advisory boards for the Salvation Army and Dunlap Recreation Association and he is a long-standing current board member and three-term past president of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Peoria. A member of the 1999 Peoria’s “40 Leaders Under Forty” class, Kavanagh also maintains active membership with the Knights of Columbus.

Kavanagh went to Bradley from Bowling Green State University, where he steadily moved up the administrative ranks in nine years. After starting as an assistant athletic director in 1987, Kavanagh left BGSU in 1996 as the senior associate athletic director. In his final position with the Falcons, Kavanagh was the The Ken Kavanagh File administrator for football, men’s basketball and hockey while also acting as event manager. Responsible for facility management, he also supervised the staffs for sports medicine, equipment and strength and conditioning. Kavanagh also served as (ADMINISTRATIVE APPOINTMENTS) the chief liaison for the financial affairs area.

Kavanagh began his administrative career by working in the athletic department at Yale University from 1982 to 1985, then worked as a graduate assistant in the athletic department at the University of Notre Dame from 1985 to 1987 before joining Bowling Green.

Athletic administration runs in Kavanagh’s bloodlines: his uncle, Kevin Kavanagh, is the former baseball coach and athletic director at Loyola College in Baltimore, planting the seed that athletic administration would be his nephew’s calling. Likewise, Ken Kavanagh’s father, John, coached a highly-successful high school summer baseball program in Connecticut for 25 years that produced former Major Leaguer Tim Teufel and NFL Hall-ofFamer Steve Young.

A native of Greenwich, Conn., Kavanagh earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College in 1982 and his postgraduate degree from Notre Dame in 1987. Kavanagh is married to the former Mary Gorenz (Maple Park, Ill.) and the couple has five children: daughters the late Megan and Rose (18), as well as sons Mitchell (16) and twins Jack and Quinn (13).

Press/Photo Credentials The Sports Information Department at Florida Gulf Coast University is ready to assist the working media in any way possible. We will gladly fulfill all reasonable requests.

When requesting credentials for the the 2009-10 season, we urge you to do so at least 24 hours in advance. Media regularly assigned to cover FGCU and the visiting school will receive top priority. Credentials can be picked up at the Sports Information Office or will-call window at the front entrance of Alico Arena. NCAA policy establishes that only photographers on assignment will be afforded credentials. Designated areas for photographers have been marked on each baseline, all photographers must remain within the designated areas.

In-Season Player Interviews All player interviews should be scheduled through the Sports Information Department. In making interview requests, we ask for at least 24 hours notice. Advance notice on both items will help ensure that your request will be handled efficiently. Players may not be interviewed on game day once they enter the locker room or athletic training room.

Post-Event Interview Policy Head coaches and requested players will be available for post-game interviews after a 10 minute “cooling off ” period as prescribed by the NCAA. See visiting Sports Information Director regarding interviews with members of their coaching staff or players.

In-Season Coaches Interview Policy In-person interviews with the head coach or staff can be arranged through the Sports Information Department. The head coach and his staff may be reached for telephone interviews from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday by calling the Sports Information Office at (239) 590-7061.

Therefore, Florida Gulf Coast University is responsible for insuring its student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff, alumni, donors, boosters and friends adhere to the rules of the A-Sun and NCAA. The loyalty and support demonstrated by our fans, alumni and friends is unparalleled. Compliance is a wide-ranging area, covering all functions of the athletics department including - but not limited to - recruiting, financial aid, eligibility, playing seasons, awards, extra benefits and rules education.

As a member of the NCAA, FGCU is responsibile for the actions of its studentathlets, staff, alumni, boosters and fans. The Compliance Office coordinates, monitors and verifies adherence to all NCAA and Atlantic Sun regulations. We are dedicated to providing educational programs and interpretive support to ensure that all individuals involved with our athletics program understand and meet FGCU’s compliance expectations.

I. Representatives of Athletic Interests.

A “representative of FGCU’s athletic interests,” or booster is anyone who: • Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organization promoting the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program; • Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution; Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospects; • Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled studentathletes or their families; or Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program.

The NCAA stipulates that once an individual has been identified as a “representative” of Florida Gulf Coast University’s athletic programs he or she retains this status forever. This is true even if the individual no longer contributes to the athletics program.

II. Recruiting.

Only coaches and athletic department staff can be involved in the recruiting process. Athletic representatives are prohibited from contacting a prospective student-athlete or members of his/her family by telephone, letter or in person for the purpose of encouraging participation in athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University. Please contact the coaching staff if you know of a prospect that may have the interest and ability to participate in intercollegiate athletics at Florida Gulf Coast University. The coach can then take appropriate action.

III. Prospective Student-Athlete.

A prospective student-athlete is a person who has started classes for the ninth (9th) grade. In addition, a student-athlete who has not started classes for the ninth grade becomes a prospective student-athlete if the institution provides such an individual (or the individual’s relatives or friends) any financial assistance or other benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students generally.

IV. Extra Benefits.

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a studentathlete (or a student-athlete’s relative or friend) a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Extra benefits would include, but are not limited to: • Cash or loans in any amount • Co-singning or arranging a loan • Gifts or free services (airline ticket, restaurant meals, etc.)

• Use of an automobile • Rent-free or reduced-cost housing • Money for, or a guarantee of, bail or bond • Employment of a student-athlete at a rate higher than the wages paid for similar work •Payment to a student-athlete for work not performed Your commitment to helping Florida Gulf Coast University comply with the letter and the spirit of the rules and regulations of the A-Sun and the NCAA is greatly appreciated.
