Soil’s structure gives it super powers! This largerthan-life walls of balls make an appealing metaphor for the different-sizes of sand, silt, and clay particles. Don’t forget the spaces in between—soil is 20-30% air, which lets roots breathe and the water flow

WISCONSIN CENTRAL SANDS

The beauty of soil is much more than surface-deep. How does soil change as you go deeper? Why are different soils good for growing different crops? Visitors inspect real soil profiles from Central Wisconsin and compare to samples from locations around the country and the world.

MADE BY GLACIERS

Where you’re standing used to be solid ice. Using the magic of lenticular animation, see the glaciers form and retreat as prehistoric eons pass before your eyes Visitors learn about how glacial action created the unique and valuable soil that makes Wisconsin agriculture so diverse and productive

SOIL SNIFFERS

There’s nothing like the smell of fresh soil, full of life and possibility. Visitors use the beakers, squeeze bulbs, and vapor concentration cones to smell and compare soil samples from different locations. What does a healthy soil smell like? Does soil from a potato farm smell different than from a carrot farm?
