Message from Helen Harrison, Head of Fettes When I took over as the Head of Fettes last year, many people advised me to prepare myself for the range of challenges that would come with running a boarding school. However, none of us had any idea of what lay ahead in the months that followed. These have been uniquely testing times for everyone and I am proud of, and thankful for, the way the Fettes community has negotiated the significant implications of the global pandemic with resilience, perseverance and imagination. I always knew that our community was special but if there was ever a time to reflect on this, it is now. This publication is full of examples of members of our community making a difference: from generous donors supporting the Fettes Foundation to Fettes staff, pupils and Old Fettesians either volunteering, adapting their businesses or fundraising to support the world-wide effort to stem the spread of the pandemic. I feel lucky to be surrounded by people who care. Now, as we enter Fettes’ 150th year, and Fettesians have returned to campus, it is time to look to the 2

future. The 150th Birthday Party and the Old Fettesian Association’s Commemoration Weekend, which were due to take place on campus in October, have sadly been postponed until 2021. However, the Development Team is planning a virtual celebration in October with a Fettes film premiere and the launch of the first phase of our digital archives. Furthermore, the beautiful 192-page hardback book, Fettes: Our Place, packed full of photographs from various aspects of life at Fettes over the last 150 years, which sits at the heart of our anniversary plans, will be published in early October. You can read more about this on page 18. When Fettes opened its doors, on 5th October 1870, most of the 53 pupils had their fees paid in full via philanthropy. In their honour, the Fettes Foundation will be mounting a fundraising appeal in 2021 to seek funds towards 100% bursaries, to allow us to continue to deliver our founding ethos and to offer the opportunities a Fettes education provides to ambitious, curious and caring young people from lowincome backgrounds. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported our bursary provision, and other Foundation projects, over the years. I hope that more members of our community will choose to support the forthcoming 150th Anniversary Appeal in 2021 and join the list of generous donors included in this publication. However, whenever and wherever you choose to mark this special year in the history of Fettes, which, as you will read on page 20, is also the 50th

anniversary of girls joining the student body, I hope that you have the opportunity to pause at some stage to remember what the school means to you and your families. During lockdown, the Development Team did not dwell on what they could not do, but instead forged ahead to make the most of what they could achieve. As a result, they have now welcomed over 1200 Old Fettesians and former staff to the new Fettes Community portal. Parents (past and present), who are willing to support senior pupils and Old Fettesians in need of career advice, are now very welcome to sign up too, as you will read on page 29. Please help us, if you can, to create a vibrant, connected and supportive digital community. I know we are fortunate at Fettes to be part of a strong and generous community and I thank everyone who has supported the College, the Foundation and the Old Fettesian community. As well as financial gifts, we receive countless gifts of time and expertise for which I am truly grateful. It is our collective belief in this great school that has seen us through these recent challenges and allows us to look forward to an exciting future for Fettes. 3

Fettes College and Community Working Together Responding to Covid-19 Fettes College is no stranger to pandemics, having endured several historic outbreaks throughout its 150-year existence. Indeed, some Old Fettesians will still remember the Asian Flu pandemic of the 1950s when wards were created in Houses for the sick, as the Medical Centre, then known as the San, was full. In early 2020 the first cases of a new coronavirus, Covid-19, were identified in the UK and by late March the country had entered lockdown. Fettes closed its doors to pupils and staff, and an online ‘learning from home’ programme was successfully pioneered.

“Despite the inevitable challenges everybody in the Fettes community has faced in recent times, there have been some truly uplifting gestures of support from across the Fettes family. I am particularly grateful to my colleagues who accepted reductions in salary or being furloughed, without complaint, when it became clear there would be no onsite teaching last term, and to the parents who waived their fee reductions, enabling us to support families struggling financially as a result of the pandemic. There is no doubt these gestures, along with the other significant cost savings we made, allow us to look ahead with a degree of cautious optimism. Thank you all.”

“There is no doubt that the Summer Term of 2020 will go down in the history of Fettes College as one like no other. Challenging, unprecedented and surreal are three words often used to describe lockdown and, when I reflect upon last term, three additional and very different words spring to mind: leadership, determination and dedication. The Head, the Bursar and senior staff displayed remarkable powers of leadership from the outset; the teaching staff, IT team and pupils were determined to make learning from home the resounding success that it was and the dedicated Fettes staff worked together to play their part in vastly reducing costs, which in turn led to fee reductions for parents.

Fettes operates from a position of strength and is blessed with a robust and supportive community of parents (past and present), pupils, Old Fettesians, staff and former staff. On behalf of the Governors, I thank you all for your support.” Michael Osborne Chairman of the Governors of the Fettes Trust

Fettes helping the local community Fettes College regularly offers access and support to local communities. Groups like Captivate Drama benefit from access to our theatre and sporting facilities are actively offered to local schools free of charge. Our strong links with the FetLor Youth Club are ongoing, with initiatives like the Challenge Programme being designed to foster closer relations, teamwork and resilience. This programme is for children from FetLor and Fettes, who take part in an extensive training programme together which culminates in a challenging expedition. Annual educational events and ongoing partnership programmes also increase engagement with local primary and secondary schools. Later in this publication you will read more about our Kick-start programme and Careers Day. We also offer free weekly language tuition by our Fourth Form Language Leaders to local primary schools and our Sixth Form continue to be trained, through the Place2Be programme, to become mentors for local primary school children, offering support as the younger children approach their transition from primary to secondary school.

Making a difference in difficult times

Much of our long-term access and support was put on pause when schools were closed, but, during the outbreak of Covid-19 Fettes continued helping the local community and strengthened existing community connections. Some of these activities are listed below: • 1 50 free parking spaces were made available in the grounds of the College & Westwoods for NHS staff working at the nearby Western General Hospital. • F ettes College Catering Department partnered with Scran Academy, who we already had ties with through FetLor Youth Club, to create freshly prepared meals for vulnerable Edinburgh residents during lockdown. Alongside staff volunteers and Old Fettesians, our Catering Manager and Executive Chef ensured over 20,000 delicious and nutritious meals were safely made, providing vital free meals to people in Edinburgh in need of warm and nourishing food. • F ettes College Science Department donated safety goggles to Strachan House Nursing Home, and Mandarin Teacher Li Jin donated 38 coverall protection suits and more than 100 face masks to Blackhall Medical Centre.

• Teachers from the Prep School created and distributed PPE masks for hospitals throughout the Easter holidays. • Staff across the College and Prep volunteered for the NHS and other local charities to collect prescriptions and deliver food to those in need. • Fettes College participates in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) each year, which encourages students to champion local grassroots charities and compete for a grant for their chosen organisation. YPI created a new initiative awarding up to 50 community grants to support the Covid-19 response. We are delighted that three Fifth Form pupils successfully secured £4,000 of funding for Cyrenians, a charity which helps transform the lives of those at risk of becoming homeless and vulnerable people.

During this challenging time, it was inspiring to see members of the Fettes community supporting the wider community in all sorts of ways. There are countless stories of positive impact, with a number of Old Fettesians working as key workers, including on the frontline at the NHS Nightingale Hospital in London. Lin Tan (PS-Ar 2007-2014) volunteered to begin her foundation year three months earlier than planned and started as a new doctor in intensive care in South East Scotland to help with the Covid effort.

Anthony Gilbert (Gl 2001-2005) put his PhD studies on hold to return to full time clinical physiotherapy as deputy physio lead at NHS Nightingale in London during Covid-19.

Clare McDonnell, Assistant Housemistress of College East, was due to run the London Marathon which was postponed due to Covid-19. Instead, she took part in the 2.6 Challenge and ran 26.2km to raise funds for Sport Relief and the National Emergencies Trust, the charity set up to support the most vulnerable during the coronavirus outbreak.

Colin Gilchrist (Ki 1980-1984) adapted one of his businesses to deliver Covid-19 testing services and anti-virus entry systems in partnership with scientists, experts and other organisations. Finlay Davey

Fellow Upper Sixth pupil Seb Anderson (PS-Gl 2010-2020) embarked on a virtual climb of Mount Everest to raise money for Stop Domestic Abuse UK, a charity which saw an increase in referrals during lockdown. Seb completed his ambitious goal of climbing the 58,070 steps (8,848m) of Mount Everest in seven days. Anthony Gilbert

Many others also volunteered in their local area or adapted their business to help the Covid-19 response. Callum Scott (PS-Mo 2004-2012) is the youngest blood biker in Scotland and covered Blood Bikes Scotland shifts during lockdown.

Every year Fettesians actively fundraise for causes close to their heart, via own clothes days, charity runs, ceilidhs, carol singing, bake sales and sleep outs. They may not have been on campus in the Summer Term, but that did not stop students testing themselves to raise funds for Covid-19 related causes. During their final term at Fettes, Finlay Davey (PS-Mo 2009-2020) and Tom Banatvala (Gl 2015-2020) set themselves the challenge of lifting 1,400,000kg over the month of May, equating to 1kg for every NHS worker in the UK. The money raised from this incredible achievement went to NHS Charities Together to support NHS staff and volunteers caring for Covid-19 patients.

Fettes staff also stepped up to raise valuable funds for various charities in innovative ways. In May, Henry McCowan Hill, Housemaster of Moredun, set himself the challenge of rowing a million metres before the end of the Summer Term to raise money for the NHS Lothian Covid-19 Appeal. Rowing for about two and a half hours every day, he successfully achieved his target and raised valuable funds for the Covid-19 response in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

There is not enough room on these pages to mention everyone who has helped make a difference in these difficult times. The Old Fettesians reading this will have seen more stories in this summer’s OF Newsletter, which can be accessed here: www.fettes.com/familyforlife/alumni and there are more stories still on our website here: www.fettes.com/post/~board/fettes-college/ post/fettes-community-support. We are proud of everything that has been done to help others, from small acts of kindness to largescale initiatives, by generous and caring members of the Fettes family.

The Gift of a Fettes Education Throughout its 150-year history, Fettes has endeavoured to continue the founding ethos of Sir William Fettes. Over the last three years, the number of 100% bursary students has doubled. This is partly due to receiving more applications requiring this level of support and partly due to the College doing more to break down barriers by recruiting deserving bursary students via initiatives like Fettes Kick-start. This programme, which was made possible as a result of wonderful gifts to the Fettes Foundation in 2018, has been developed to actively recruit two deserving children from low-income families in Edinburgh into the Prep School each year. “The Kick-start programme has been warmly welcomed at Fettes Prep School. It has already opened up an incredible educational opportunity for four children. At the same time, the Prep School has been given the opportunity to reach out to our local community and identify potential beneficiaries, strengthen local partnerships and fulfil the vision of Sir William Fettes.” Adam Edwards Headmaster of Fettes Preparatory School 10

We are thrilled that this transformative support is enabling us to provide full bursarial support for these pupils to ‘kick-start’ the first year of their Fettes education. We are working closely with five partner primary schools in some of the most deprived areas of Edinburgh to identify and recruit children who have the abilities and qualities to become outstanding Fettesians. We are indebted to the Head Teachers and staff at our partner schools, who work closely with us to select suitable candidates for consideration. Without their warm welcome and commitment to this project we would have been unable to make the significant progress we have done to date. In the long-term, the Kick-start programme will transform these children’s lives, and, in return, can transform the lives of others. Every bursary pupil at Fettes has the ability to have a positive impact on their peers, their teachers, their House, their family and their community. Funding bursary support is a significant investment for the school and although fundraising in this area has increased significantly in the last five years, philanthropic income does not cover our bursary contribution. We are passionate about providing life-changing bursaries to ambitious young people not ordinarily in a position to benefit from a Fettes

education, so increasing philanthropic income towards 100% bursaries therefore remains a key fundraising priority for the Fettes Foundation. “Thank you so much to all those who have made donations to the Foundation towards bursary provision at Fettes College. Bursary provision is fundamental to Fettes and its ethos of assisting aspiring young people to fulfil their potential and make a real difference to their futures.” Bruce A I Dingwall CBE (SH 1973-1978) Chairman of the Fettes Foundation and Governor of the Fettes Trust We are immensely grateful to the donors who share our vision and have supported this key philanthropic priority. It is testament to the strength of our warm and generous community that in 2019-2020, despite economic pressures and uncertainty throughout the year, we received donations amounting to over £700,000 towards bursaries from major supporters, regular donors and in response to our Bursaries Appeal in March.

We hope that many members of the Fettes community will help us to stay true to our founding ethos and provide children from low-income backgrounds with the opportunity to learn, live and flourish at Fettes. “I strongly believe in the College’s commitment to broadening access to Fettes by offering means-tested bursaries. As a Trustee, I am committed to helping the Foundation increase philanthropic income towards 100% bursaries. I am deeply grateful to everyone in the Fettes community who has supported us. I hope that next year, during our 150th Bursaries Appeal, many more members of the Fettes community will join us as donors.” Nicola Bolton Fettes Foundation Trustee

In 2021, during Fettes’ 150th anniversary year, the Foundation will be mounting a fundraising appeal seeking donations towards 100% bursaries. 11

How bursaries are awarded at Fettes All applicants to Fettes are assessed on the same entrance exams, their most recent school report, and an interview with the Head. The offer of a place is independent of the bursary application process and bursaries are awarded, where appropriate and funds permitting, to families whose children are given a place by the Head.

Bursaries are offered for one academic year only and reviewed annually, adjusted only depending on changes in the family’s own financial circumstances. “I believe that the provision of means-tested bursaries is crucial to keeping Fettes the school we know and love. It is a significant investment for the school that matters to us all.”

As the College receives many more applications for bursary support than funding allows, priority is given to those children likely to gain most from a Fettes education. Each pupil to whom support is offered must, in the opinion of the Head, be likely to make sound academic progress, possess the potential to develop the quality of their work, and benefit from participation in wider, extra-curricular activities on offer at the school. The amount of any bursary award is not influenced by the level of the academic ability of the child but by the extent of financial need. Each case is assessed on its own merits following a thorough review of the family’s financial circumstances, with an independent organisation assisting in the process and undertaking home visits.

Impact of bursaries: case study I was only able to attend Fettes College through the generosity of others. Being fortunate enough to receive a bursary and academic scholarship, my nine years at the College laid such a strong foundation academically and socially which has served me time and again in adult life. After Fettes, I attended Hatfield College at Durham University where I obtained a BSc (Hons) in Psychology, followed by a Master of Arts at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating with Distinction.

lockdown begins to lift and international borders open. In early April, I wrote a song about lockdown entitled ‘For Granted’ which was subsequently featured on the BBC. Using these months to record and produce my own album has been a source of great joy, whilst also continuing to foster singing students learning online through distance-learning. A teacher, a singer, an actor, an instrumentalist, and a businesswoman - all are possible because I was, and still am, a Fettesian. I would like to take this opportunity to thank bursary donors to the Fettes Foundation for their generosity. I cannot thank you enough.

On paper, this is seemingly quite a strange transition! Hannah Howie (Inv-CW 2000-2009) Fettesian life, however, involved such a rich extracurricular programme which certainly planted seeds for Bursary Recipient my creative and eclectic future. Venturing into the arts in this last decade, or any decade (!) may seem ludicrous - work is scarce, competition is high, and the industry often fickle. But Fettes did not make me work-shy at all. The rigorous, competitive, and nurturing environment that I relished within the college grounds ensured that I am now able to make a success of myself on my chosen career path. The Covid-19 pandemic led to an interesting season for me, providing some much needed, sedentary time off after working round the globe these past few years. I now find myself based in Scotland until such times as 14

Legacies: Following in our Founder’s Footsteps When Sir William Fettes left a bequest in his will for the education of deserving children, he could not have imagined the sector-leading boarding school bearing his name today and our uniquely warm and generous global community.

Upon his death in 1836, the residue of Sir William Fettes’ estate was used to form an endowment for the maintenance, education and outfit of young people whose parents had either died without leaving them with sufficient funds for that purpose or who, from innocent misfortune during their lives, were unable to give suitable education to their children. This generous legacy enabled Fettes College to be built and realised his vision of the importance of education in shaping a young person’s life. In 1870 the first 53 pupils crossed the threshold, many of whom were orphans or the sons of impoverished parents and most of whom had their fees paid in full through philanthropy.

We truly appreciate those who have given, or are planning to give, a legacy gift to Fettes to develop and support the ambitions of Fettesians for generations to come. Throughout our history, Fettes has benefited greatly from legacy income. These bequests have enabled the College to achieve so much, from continuing the founding ethos of funding deserving bursary recipients, to the improvement or creation of new facilities and assistance for particular departments. This includes the Pavilion Restoration Project, which received a terrific boost from the legacies of the much-loved member of the Fettes Common Room, Paddy Croker (Staff 1959-1965), and Old Fettesian sporting legend, Frans ten Bos (Gl 1951-1955).

A legacy to support future Fettesians David Douglas Dick (Dougald) (Ki 1946-1950) came to Fettes in 1946 as a Foundation Scholar. He enjoyed his four years at Fettes, where amongst other things, he represented the school in shooting, gained his lifelong love of playing squash, learned to play the bagpipes, and became a formidable Scottish country dancer.

In May 2020, Dougald sadly died. He chose to leave a gift in his will to support students who would benefit from an education at Fettes College but whose parents or guardians do not have the necessary funds to pay for it. We are tremendously thankful to Dougald and to all those who decide to give something back to help others experience a Fettes education. Every generation of Fettesians, whether fee-paying or bursary recipients, has benefited from the generosity of those that have gone before them, beginning with the legacy of Sir William Fettes. It is very special to see this tradition of philanthropy continue.

Remembering the Fettes Foundation in your will is a simple, tax-efficient way to recognise what Fettes means to you. If you would like to give something back through a legacy, however big or small, please speak to your solicitor who will be able to guide you on how to leave a gift to the Fettes Foundation (SC028350), Fettes College, Carrington Road, Edinburgh, EH4 1QX.

Gifts in wills have always been important to Fettes, and we are extremely grateful to those who choose to follow in Sir William Fettes’ footsteps by supporting the College in this way. If you would like to let us know of your intentions to enable us to plan for the future, please do get in touch with Nicola Pickavance on +44 (0)131 311 6960 or n.pickavance@fettes.com.

After gaining a degree at the University of St Andrews, Dougald’s career took him to Sri Lanka, India, and Hong Kong, where he became known as ‘Mr Shipping’ due to his role as Chairman of an international shipping consortium. He retired to Australia in the late 1980s with his late wife Joan. Dougald never forgot the opportunities opened up for him by his education at Fettes and often reminisced about his time at the school. Dougald Dick in his final year at Fettes

50 Years of Girls at Fettes

my classes which, as it turned out, prepared me well for eventually entering the male dominated engineering career field. After graduating top of my class in engineering at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, I have had a phenomenally exciting career as an engineer, working on ground breaking technology at MIT, UCLA and California with the then new Global Positioning System, before starting my own company in Colorado, NAVSYS Corporation. Early equipment I designed is now on display at the Smithsonian Museum as the first operational GPS cell phone.

Alison Brown

One hundred years after opening its doors, Fettes welcomed its first girl, Amanda Mackenzie-Stuart (Gl-Ca 1970-1972). As we reach the 150th anniversary of the school and the 50th anniversary of girls attending, Fettes is now fully co-educational and thriving, with its first female Head, Helen Harrison.

successful career in engineering, traditionally a male dominated industry. She explains below how this journey began at Fettes:

“As I look back on my path to being appointed into the 2020 class of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the gateway to my success certainly started Alison Brown (Ca 1973-1975), who lives in the United at Fettes College. States and is one of the Trustees of our US Charity, Friends of Fettes College Inc., was one of the early From 1973-1975 I attended Fettes as a “day girl” with female pupils who joined Fettes just three years after the goal of studying applied sciences for A-levels and Amanda arrived. Alison has gone on to have a very the Cambridge entrance exams. I was the only girl in 20

footsteps and choose a career in the exciting and creative field of engineering, a decision that I have never regretted.” In celebration of the 50th anniversary of girls joining Fettes, we are planning an all-female panel event in 2020-2021, organised through our Career Partnership programme. Details will be confirmed in due course. To discover more about the experiences of Fettes’ early girls, please join us on the Fettes Community portal (www.fettescommunity.org) to access personal interviews and further insights.

My memories of Fettes include bitter windy days, challenging classes, and lasting friendships with other students and the amazing staff who mentored me. Perhaps the most important skill I learned at Fettes though was “resilience”. I was mercilessly teased by many of the boys, but that allowed me to develop a very strong sense of humour, which often proved to be my best defence when many times later I had to face detractors who didn’t believe that a “girl” could succeed as an engineer. My motto became “if you’re dumb enough to underestimate me – watch out!” Being appointed into the NAE in recognition of my technology contributions is the pinnacle of my career as an engineer. I hope that what I have been able to accomplish may inspire other girls to follow in my Alison Brown

Reconnecting to Fettes History

Keeping the Fettes Community Connected

Our primary goal in the Fettes College Archives is to ensure that the wealth of information, original documents, photos, paintings and memorabilia we hold is cared for, catalogued and promoted, and that the archives remain an important part of the life and history of Fettes College.

In helping members of our community connect with Fettes and each other, members of the Development Team see first-hand how people come together to support one another at all stages of life. We are lucky to be part of the warm and generous Fettes family and we appreciate all the gifts of time, expertise and advice we receive from an ever-growing number of Old Fettesians (OFs), parents (past and present), staff, Governors and Trustees.

We are delighted to have almost completed the first phase of an exciting project to create a vastly expanded digital resource thanks to the generosity of donors to the Fettes Foundation. This will allow pupils, staff and the wider Fettes community to access articles, images and detailed information from the entire catalogue of Fettesian magazines, dating back to 1878, and Old Fettesian Newsletters from 1971 to the present day – some 27,000 pages. Following this, approximately 1,300 scanned school photographs will be made accessible during the second phase of digitisation, enabling Old Fettesians to reminisce and reflect on their part in the Fettes story.

OFs will easily be able to look up their own name or names of their friends to recall that particular slice of Fettes history. This will be an invaluable tool for me in my role as Archivist and for my colleagues in the Development Team, as it will allow us to deal more easily with enquiries, assist pupils and staff with research projects, and create articles for sharing on social media. Our pupils will be able to research those who have gone before them and reflect upon the history of their school. All in all, engagement with the wider Fettes community will be greatly enhanced through the use of this system. We are enormously grateful to all those donors who supported this project, including those who are based far from Fettes geographically and will particularly benefit from this valuable resource.

The Old Fettesian Association (OFA)

The Old Fettesian Association is led by a supportive committee of engaged volunteers.

The current Office Bearers are: From early on in the history of the College, Amanda Forsyth (nĂŠe Baker) (Ar 1982-1984) (President) a strong network was established for former pupils. Henry Cave (SH 1980-1984) (Vice President) The first OF dinner took place on 28th June 1879 and Richard Llewellyn (Mo 1987-1992) (Hon. Treasurer) OF news appeared in the Fettesian magazine from Georgina Hill (CW 1990-1993) (Hon. Secretary) 1878. More recently, the OFA has been incredibly supportive in the lead up to the 150th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of girls, particularly with our beautiful commemorative book, Fettes: Our Place.

Craig Marshall Archivist

It is fitting that over the course of our 150th year, we will launch these phases of the digital archives project, which will be accessible via the new Fettes Community portal, bringing the vibrant history of Fettes to the fore. A searchable source of images and information will enable Old Fettesians and others to access previously unseen material from wherever they are in the world. 22

23

She received a warm welcome from OFs at the OFA’s flagship event, Commemoration, as well as at the enjoyable London Drinks Party, the popular London Carol Service, the friendly Newcastle Dinner and the Edinburgh Lunch, which was a particularly moving occasion as Ian MacIntyre (Ca 1953-1958), long-standing organiser of these lunches, had sadly passed away two months prior.

The Development Team, in particular the Old Fettesian Co-ordinator, work with the OFA Committee and the OFA’s team of Regional Representatives to help strengthen OF connections, run an array of gatherings across the globe and produce the Old Fettesian Newsletter, packed full of news and stories from OFs and Fettes. We also love welcoming OFs and their families back to Fettes to visit the school to talk to pupils, share memories with friends and family, reconnect with teachers or simply wander around the grounds. Sadly this has not been possible in recent months, but, if you would like to arrange a visit, please do email ofa@fettes.com to find out when we can accommodate you. 24

OF gatherings across the globe It’s fair to say that events over the past year have faced challenges beyond our control, from protests in Hong Kong to the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, gatherings were cancelled in Yorkshire, Central Scotland, London, Hong Kong, Dubai and New York. We remain immensely grateful to all our OFA Regional Reps who worked hard to organise events, whether they went ahead or not.

Within the UK, OFs also gathered for good food and great company in the Northern Isles, the North West of England and in Central Scotland. Further afield, there were sociable gatherings in South Africa and Canada and the annual Eurozone weekend took place in Dresden with OFs and spouses travelling there from six different countries by land, sea, road and rail. In Kuala Lumpur, the Petra family very kindly hosted an event in their home for local members of the Fettes

community and in Singapore, Rosie Thompson (SH 1984-1986) did the same. Both were timed to coincide with a visit by Nicola Pickavance, Director of Development and Gemma Gray, Director of Marketing and Admissions. None of these events would have been possible without generous support and energy from OFs and their families. We greatly appreciate the dedication and encouragement of all those who help connect our widespread community, allowing others to experience the warmth of the Fettes family across the world. If you would like our assistance to arrange an event in your region, please email ofa@fettes.com or telephone +44 (0)131 311 6741. To see an up-to-date list of events, please go to: www.fettes.com/familyforlife/events.

In her first year as Head of Fettes, Helen Harrison was very much looking forward to meeting as many members of the Fettes community as possible and, despite the disrupted events calendar, she did manage to attend several events. 25

Career support gratefully received from the Fettes family

Now in 2020 we are in touch with over 1,000 members of our community, willing to offer support with careers.

As our 150th anniversary approaches, it seems appropriate to reflect on how things have changed over the decades at Fettes. A relatively recent success story has undoubtedly been the Fettes Career Partnership programme which began in 2012, to harness the Fettes community to support careers.

Our invitations to support career discovery events at Fettes continue to be met with generosity and enthusiasm, and all the advice and support offered is gratefully received by Fettesians and the pupils from local Edinburgh High Schools who attend our Oxbridge interview evening and Careers Day at Fettes each year.

Though this programme has flourished over the past eight years, speakers have been coming to Fettes for many years to inspire pupils. Indeed, the first occasion that an Old Fettesian, the Rev S Gordon Ponsonby (SH 1870-1876) returned to preach in Chapel was in 1885. Since launching the Career Partnership Programme, we have welcomed groups of OFs and parents to Fettes to ‘lift the lid’ on their career areas; we have supported the development of networking skills for pupils and we have run business networking events for pupils and for OFs and parents in Edinburgh, London and Hong Kong. Intelligent and insightful panel events have joined the mix since 2018 and we have created a supportive LinkedIn community.

We are enormously grateful to the many OFs and parents from across the generations who have provided support for careers. Our pupils, Old Fettesians, and pupils from the local community have benefited significantly and are very thankful. Fettes truly is a family for life.

“I took part in a 7-week internship with a business development and social media marketing company in the spring of 2015, facilitated by the Fettes Career Partnership programme. Overall, the experience was extremely valuable and provided me with knowledge and skills that I was later able to use to support societal and charitable work at university. Adam Gordon (JS-Ki 1988-1992), the Managing Director and founder of the company, personally supported my learning and development throughout

the 7 weeks, giving me stretching tasks, responsibility over important work streams, and exposure to meetings with senior and prospective clients. Adam continued to support my career development once I had finished my internship, connecting me with key contacts for informational interviews and further work experience. I am grateful to Adam and the Fettes Career Partnership programme for such a brilliant experience and for their assistance and support during such a formative time.” Clare O’Sullivan (Inv-Ar 2006-2014)

Towards the end of 2018 our achievements were recognised by winning the Independent School of the Year for Student Careers Programme. 26

A digital platform to connect the Fettes community In an exciting digital development, the Fettes Career Partnership programme is now accessible via our new portal, fettescommunity.org, and we would invite all members of the Fettes community who are willing to help to sign up today.

“Receiving first hand advice from a fellow OF within the sports management sector helped provide a unique insight into an industry that is notoriously difficult to enter and helped me to prepare me for my first interview scenario. I was fortunate enough to secure a role and have remained within the same company since then, relocating to the Hong Kong office in 2016. The Fettes Career Partnership programme affords OFs a wonderful opportunity to connect with an extensive network of professionals across the full spectrum of professions and I would implore all new leavers to fully utilise this resource.” Chris Giffin (Inv-Mo 2002-2010)

28

“I found my time at the US-Taiwan Business Council in Washington DC to be a particularly constructive part of my professional experience. I learned many skills which helped me to gain further experience elsewhere, including writing concise and informative reports for colleagues and clients, and basic computing skills, which are now universally required. Furthermore, having the opportunity to spend time working in DC piqued my interest in working abroad in the future.” Hannah Nairn (Da 2014-2016) undertook an internship with Rupert Hammond-Chambers (JS-Gl 1979-1986) in 2017.

You can then become involved by: • Answering industry specific questions • Facilitating introductions • Meeting virtually or in person • Considering internships • Reviewing CVs or job applications • Offering general career advice

During the course of the next academic year we plan to welcome our Sixth Form pupils on to the platform, The Development Team was fortunate that Covid-19 did so they can begin to benefit from users willing to help not stop its plans to launch this fantastic new resource with careers advice, before they move on from Fettes. to OFs and former staff in April. Since then over 1200 users have registered on the platform, from all over the We are exceptionally grateful to Ryan Li world to connect with other users, access exclusive (Gl 2010-2015) and his family for their financial content and photo albums and join special interest support to create this vibrant and supportive digital groups. A hugely important feature of the portal is that community for the Fettes family. users can offer to help other users with career advice, and it is very encouraging that over 40% of those who have signed up to date are willing to do just that. We are delighted now to welcome parents, past and present, who are willing to help grow our digital careers network to join OFs and former staff on the portal. When you do so, please ensure that your ‘Willing to help’ settings are turned on by clicking on ‘Mentoring’ and ‘Settings’.

Washington D.C. Gathering A small group of OFs met in Washington DC on 9th May 2019. Nick Burnett (CE-Ar 1963-1968) reported that, “There was much amusing back and forth, since we had not been at Fettes at exactly at the same time. We learned how things had evolved over a 15-year period, the most important and welcome, we all agreed, being when Fettes became co-educational. There was also a lot of discussion on the performance and characteristics of the various Headmasters and Housemasters we had encountered!” 33

North American Regional Group

After the postponement of the New York Drinks in April 2020 due to Covid-19, OFs in the USA gathered online on 23rd May 2020 alongside Helen Harrison, Head of Fettes, Jones Pharr (Ca 1995-1996), President of FFC Inc. and Amanda Forsyth (née Baker) (Ar 1982-1984), President of the Old Fettesian Association, for our first ever virtual event. It was fantastic to be joined by a wide range of OFs, from those who attended Fettes in the 1940s all the way up to the 2000s, and most decades in-between.

A group has been set up on the Fettes Community portal to help bring those spread across North America closer, virtually. We would be delighted to welcome new members to this group, which can be accessed once you register for fettescommunity.org. Please do join us to be kept up to date with news and events and connect with fellow members of the Fettes family based in the USA and neighbouring areas.

Forthcoming Events – 150th Celebrations Trustees are currently working on plans to celebrate Fettes’ 150th birthday in the USA in Spring 2021. It would be wonderful for US-based OFs, current and past parents, former staff, and friends, to come together to mark this special occasion. Further details will be confirmed in due course. If you would like more information on attending or hosting a regional event, or reconnecting with members of the Fettes community in the USA, please email fettes.community@fettes.com. 34

In January 2020, we were sad to hear of the death of Colin Ross (Gl 1954-1958), who generously acted as the first Chair of the Fettes Foundation. Current Trustee Barrie Lloyd (Ki 1953-1958) writes that, “Colin’s role in the setting up of the Foundation in 1998 cannot be stressed enough… Fettes owes, in my view, a huge debt of gratitude to Colin.” The Foundation would not be where it is today without his contribution. The Fettes Foundation is a registered Scottish Charity, No. SC028350. It is a company limited by guarantee in Scotland, No. SC189253, with its registered office at Fettes College, Carrington Road, Edinburgh, EH4 1QX.

The Pavilion Restoration Project Planning permission granted The Yeo Pavilion was built in 1906, just over 30 years after Fettes opened its doors. This was only possible thanks to the philanthropic aspirations of Old Fettesians who organised an appeal to raise funds in memory of much-loved Carrington Housemaster John Shapland Yeo (1860-1904).

Trust, have chosen to support our plans to sensitively restore, refurbish and extend this nostalgic piece of Fettes history for the benefit of current and future pupils. However, there is a funding gap and the Fettes Foundation is aiming to bridge this as soon as possible. If you are in a position to help, please contact Nicola Pickavance, Director of Development, by emailing n.pickavance@fettes.com or telephoning +44 (0)131 311 6960. She would be delighted to hear from you.

We are thrilled and thankful that Old Fettesians, In March 2020, planning permission was granted to current and past parents, former staff and the Fettesian transform the Pavilion into a prestigious co-educational

home for Fettes sportsmen and sportswomen. Shortly afterwards the project, like so many other construction projects, was put on hold during lockdown. The encouraging news is that our Buildings Committee is now in a position to make progress once more. The Pavilion has played such an important role in sporting life at Fettes and it is quite something to think that, more than a century after it was constructed, the generosity of our community will once again ensure that Fettesians have an inspiring sporting hub fit for the decades ahead.

“As the College approaches its 150th birthday, many people in the Fettes community will have special memories of the Pavilion. It remains our intention, funding permitting, to restore and extend this iconic landmark ahead of the planned Festival of Sport on 5th June 2021. This will be a great day, when we will celebrate sport at Fettes as part of the 150th anniversary programme. William Sinclair Governor of the Fettes Trust and Convener of the Buildings Committee

Thank you from Nicola Pickavance, Director of Development At the beginning of lockdown, like many others I am sure, there were countless work-related worries running through my head. Then, after a couple of weeks working from home, once the 10am daily catch up with the Development Team and video calls with colleagues, Governors and Trustees had become the norm, I realised I had to take a deep breath and concentrate on what I could achieve rather than on unknowns and uncertainties. I took great comfort from gifts starting to arrive in response to the Foundation’s Bursaries Appeal; supportive messages appearing in my inbox from Old Fettesians and parents and from the emerging stories of members of our community making generous gestures to help others less fortunate than themselves. So, in a more positive frame of mind, I set to work with my hard-working colleagues in the Development Team to do all we could keep our community up to date, connected and informed and to make plans for the future. We successfully launched our new Fettes Community portal, held events on Zoom and sought help from Old Fettesians to support the leaving class of 2020, all of which you can read more about within

these pages. We spent time adapting our anniversary plans whilst keeping significant projects on track, such as finalising the forthcoming book Fettes: Our Place and the 2020 Old Fettesian Newsletter. We started to plan the Foundation’s 150th Bursaries Appeal, which you will receive next year, and we made and communicated difficult decisions regarding postponing much anticipated events. The Development Team has an exciting and wideranging remit, but we can’t achieve all that we do without lots of help from the Fettes community, for which I am extremely grateful. I have so many people to thank, not least the Foundation donors listed on the following pages. I am deeply grateful to you all, and to the many more people in our community who make a difference to our work giving up their time and offering their advice and expertise. This includes everyone who is willing to help the Fettes Career Partnership programme; our Foundation Trustees, the OFA Committee; the Friends of Fettes Inc. Board; our Governors and my dedicated colleagues at Fettes.

One of the many exciting events that had to be cancelled during lockdown was the Fettes Foundation Fundraising Dinner in April. It was shaping up to be a wonderful evening for over 250 guests, with a stellar list of donated auction and raffle prizes. I am especially thankful to all those parents who supported the event preparations and to all prize donors. I would also like to thank everyone who has been very understanding about the cancellation of this event and many others, as a result of Covid-19. There is no doubt that recent times have been challenging for us all, but we are lucky at Fettes to have people around us making a significant impact on our community. I continue to draw strength from our energetic, generous and vibrant global family on a daily basis, and would be delighted to have a conversation with anyone who is interested to find out more about supporting the Fettes Foundation or the wider work of the Development Team. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.
