About F-O-R-M

F-O-R-M, Festival of Recorded Movement, is Vancouver’s first ever youth-led, youth-focused movement on screen festival.

F-O-R-M is a by-youth for-youth (ages 15-25) festival; created through a collaboration between Company 605, Kristina Lemieux and 23-yearold independent dance artist Sophia Wolfe. The festival encourages community-building among peers and engagement of young audiences with short films that inspire artists and audiences to see movement from new perspectives.

F-O-R-M is an inclusive event, drawing young audiences and the general public interested in seeing new creative ideas emerge from this next generation. Content includes dance, skateboarding, surfing, parkour, and any movement form where physicality is central. Our aim is to celebrate and support a rising generation of creators and enthusiasts through providing a formal context to both screen and talk about their work.

This past year has been such an incredible journey. I am ecstatic to have you all here and to share this weekend with you as we launch the first ever Festival Of Recorded Movement! I can hardly believe these programs are physically in your hands, and that we have created such an incredible lineup of films, workshops and parties. I never imagined this project to become what it is today, and I am thrilled to have you all here to experience this with me. I am so honoured to be in this position as Artistic Director, and to be able to support my generation of creators. F-OR-M has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Even in our first year, we received such high caliber of films by artists from around the globe. I am excited to show you short films made by youth artists across 13 different countries, with more than 50 youth makers and movers involved in 38 short films. Thank you to all the artists who have been a part of these productions and for sharing your work with us! I could not have done this without the help and support from my mentors and colleagues; Josh and Lisa who continue to support my development as an artist, and Kristina Lemieux for believing in me and in this project, and for making everything you see at this festival a reality. F-O-R-M would not exist without them.

On behalf of Company 605, we are excited to be part of an incredible team of people who have brought the inaugural Festival Of Recorded Movement together, and to begin this brand new initiative to celebrate and support an emerging generation of artists, athletes, and filmmakers.

We believe the body holds a unique ability to convey ideas in a powerful way, to tell stories, express identity, and reveal something that often cannot be put into words. This weekend is about youth from our community, and from around the world, sharing some of those ideas and stories with us.

We are continuously amazed by the talent and creativity of young people, whose perspective and approach will always shape everything to come, and working with Sophia Wolfe during the creation of this event is a perfect example. We hope this festival will become a meeting place for emerging artists, and that from here, they will converse, collaborate, and continue challenging one another in their form.

We are pleased to announce that, with the support of the BC Arts Council and all of our partners, the 2nd annual F-OR-M will take place in 2017. By simply attending, you have already contributed so much to our efforts. Bodies in Motion/Bodies at Rest: A Dance Film Workshop with Daniel Conrad

Opening Party

June 11th 10:00am-6:00pm @ Cineworks Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and F-O-R-M presents a full-day workshop for filmmakers, choreographers, and dancers who want to make dance films; and for any artists who want to exercise their visual imaginations.

Many filmmakers try to film dance choreographed for stage. This often fails, since dance has vastly different needs than film. Film cuts the world into angles, while stage dance is conceived as a continuum from a single angle.

Time and space are more compressed on film than on stage. Even the body of the solo dancer struggles with the camera, its full vertical shape resisting the horizontal frame. To make a true dance film, choreographers must understand the frame and directors must learn the kinetics of dance. Going from stage to screen starts with choreographing and lighting shot-by-shot, specifically for the camera.

In this intensive workshop, participants will study some core methods, watch films and clips that use them, and practice with camera, lights and a dancer.

Topics will include composition and lighting within the frame, choosing angles and working within them, cutting as choreography, rhythmic and overtonal montage, creative use of discontinuous and non-matching action, solving nonstage location challenges, and improvisational methods. www.rhodopsin.ca/

Exploring Movement with Final Cut Pro X June 16th 7:00pm-10:00pm @ VIVO Media Arts Centre Final Cut Pro X, an introduction to editing movement with Apple video software, in connection with F-O-R-M. Learn how to import, edit video, add effects and titles, and output to dvd, web, or master files on the once-and-future king of editing software. Bring your own raw video to edit, if you wish! Video editing will help you put your best work forward in grant applications, promotional video, or archiving your own history. Useful for movement artists (or anyone!) to gain the knowledge to work independently and self sufficiently. Every performer (and anyone) will benefit from these solid video skills!

We invite you to bring your friends and family to enjoy a drink and meet the artists behind the scenes. Get a sneak peek at some of the films that will be screened over the weekend and dance with us. Featuring a dance playlist made by the dancers of Company 605 and a never ending feed of your favorite dance films! *must be 19 and older to attend

FORMations June 18th 12:00pm-3:00pm @Woodwards Atrium Emerging filmmakers, movers and directors (or anyone interested) can meet at the heart of Vancouver in the Woodwards Atrium. This is an open and public environment for artists of all ages to come together with their cameras and movement expertise/concepts, connect with fellow participants, collaborate and create on the spot. Artists across disciplines can meet and get to know one another while working on any ideas they want to bring to the table. Join us for a fun afternoon of celebrating movement and film before our screenings!!

Participants will also have the opportunity to upload some of their footage from the Jam onto a shared cloud storage, so that files can be shared and dispersed amongst artists! The footage will also be uploaded at the end of day to be compiled, edited and projected in the lobby at Vancity Theatre by artist Sammy Chien before the screenings.

Pacing explores a series of movement solos in a distressed environment. The score is composed entirely of sounds captured on set, and is designed to emphasize their unique rhythmic qualities.

Our first screening of the evening includes films that look at the body in minimalistic and experimental ways, offering a dynamic sense of rhythm and concepts that accentuate the the human body outside of what we see physically.

It is originally inspired by a former reccurring dream of two red balls, and it has now become a metaphor for the methods of choice-making in the choreographic process.

They are anonymous figures; meaning emerges organically between them, as they shift with and against each other, never stopping.

Screening Two // June 18th 8:30pm

The 90

The 90 is a unique take on sports commercial advertising. Featuring a spoken word poem by Burke Mayne, this film shows a different side of what it takes to be in a professional sports team. The 90 references the 90 minutes in a soccer match and the small windows of time where sporting competitions take place. The concepts in the piece flow from spectators observing the event to the emotions and ideals centered in competitive occurrences.

These films offer a diverse range of movement genres and revolve around concepts of identity and social issues.

Luo was born in a small village in China from an indigenous tribe.

After moving to Beijing, she noticed she was surrounded by these ruthless skyscrapers, reminding her of some kind of hyper-modernized concentration camp. The temptations seem to enslave us.

A small percentage of people is controlling a large percentage of people with “ rules” and “ regulations”. Yet, we can merely survive by continually feeding them with more power that enslave us in the first place.

Beyond the Frames is the story of us living in the misery of not understanding the frames and structures, and escaping from the truth. This film is made under very hard situation of Iran, with courage of the crew, using the illegal and forbidden Dance art form here, to tell the world all the barriers and structures can be removed, if we decide to break them. First step, is knowing what are the frames.

“Move” follows two movement artist as they workshop in residency in Cologne, Germany at the dance studio Tanzfaktur.

The Way They Were

The Way They Were is a series of vignettes, painting themes of loss, confusion, and nostalgia. Images of what may seem nonsensical, begin to unfold a memory of sensations and relationships. We see a small group of individuals oscillating between child-like dream sequences and idiosyncratic improvisation, to show personal realism and complications in human relationships.

A female tribe is on a ritualistic journey when one of the members stumbles upon a golden dress. The tribe becomes fragmented through the superficial promise of power that dress holds, as each of its members fights for their possession of it.

A celebration of and reflection on youth, ephemerality, transformation, and preservation, the Willis characters of folklore and classical ballet are revived on screen as contemporary video-ghosts.

Dance here is derived from every cell, keeping the idea to embody evolution of living creatures.

Spain Dans PXL: Producer, Key Cast: Anna Borras, Jaume Martinez From ancient times, number 15 has been assigned with the virtue of discovering all things hidden, moving away from everything bad. It is also a synonym of innocence, naivety and youth. How can we turn in “15” and bring up our hidden part to give up all bad things?

Commissioned Artists World Premieres

F-O-R-M’s Commissioning Fund is an exciting program offered by the festival for youth artists. This year F-O-R-M was able to award five emerging artists with $1500 cash and equipment credit and access to the facility at Cineworks to go towards the creation of a brand new movement film to be screened and premiered on Sunday June 19th.

These artists were carefully selected by our jury through an application process in which each of their proposals showed promise, dedication, talent and innovation towards the making of a new movement-centred film. Heart & Soul: S12 E10 was collectively devised by its directors, sound designers, and performers. The foundation of its creation was a movement-based exploration of a red apartment. Through this process, the space transformed into a place of entrapment and stagnancy: we watch as two bodies—resilient in their movement—endure the oppressive stillness of the room.

Slahal is a bone game/hand game/ stick game – it has been played all throughout North America. Two teams would sit across from each other. There are two bones that could fit into a hand – one is marked and the other is plain. The bones are hidden in clenched fists, and the object is to guess the unmarked bone. If you guess right the bones are handed off to the other team. Whoever was holding the bones would be singing. The game could go on for days sometimes – sometimes it was used to settle disputes; sometimes it was played just for fun, sometimes it evenprevented war.

The movements of the dancers, the spinning, were to try to confuse the other team so they weren’t sure which hand the bone would be in.

This film melded tradition dances with modern visual arts; placing the dancers in front of mere shots of nature rather than out in nature themselves helps to bring together the traditional with the modern.

Director: Dylan Maranda Surfer: Michael Darling Creatives: Mack Calistan & Ryan Clough-Carroll Location: Tofino, British Columbia, Canada Highlighting the movement and skill of the human body, the tumultuous pacific ocean and the expression of soul displayed daily in pacific northwest surfing. Filmed over the course of a week in Tofino, British Columbia, “That Which We Are” attempts to capture and present the spirit and magic of Canada’s west coast through visceral imagery, sounds and movement.

Empty space, a human body, and eight articles of clothing. Faux solo explores the dialogue and collaboration between the body, sound, clothing, and the space. Each article of clothing dictates the next move into the unknown space; sound amplifies the impact of the colliding costumes and contrasts to the space surrounding it.

In the end, the thread of the film, the human body is left on its own and continues as a remnant of all that has accumulated.

Inspired by the voyeuristic and fantastical feeling of Prada and Nike commercials, shots and images are imbued with a feeling of desire, allure and the impulse for more. The body is on view yet it is also the tool for manipulating the clothing and environment - the subjective/objective, personal/public is continually emphasized and revealed.
