About F-O-R-M Welcome to F-O-R-M (Festival Of Recorded Movement)! Vancouver’s first ever movement on screen festival.

F-O-R-M is a youth focused movement on screen festival; founded by dance artist Sophia Wolfe with the support and encouragement of Company 605 and Kristina Lemieux. F-O-R-M was created from a lack of having a platform for youth artists to create and share movement on screen. We are committed to supporting youth artists in gaining more opportunities to learn about filmmaking, get hands-on experience creating, and have a community to share their work with. F-O-R-M encourages community-building among peers and engagement of audiences with short films that inspire then to see movement from new perspectives. We have now created a nonprofit, Recorded Movement Society, to support these activities.

This is an exciting year for us as we have had privilege of receiving funding from the Canada Council for the Arts for the first time. This presented us with the opportunity to expand and support artists over the age of 25, while maintaining our central focus; to support youth creativity and voices through movement on screen. We see this as an opportunity for each generation to inspire and learn from one another, spark conversation, expand networks, and build community. We have also expanded our team, welcoming Katelyn Roberts as our Marketing Coordinator and welcomed back Kayla De Vos in an expanded role as our Volunteer and Front of House Coordinator.

The vast majority of our team are also youth.

We are excited to present a variety of films that deliver strong imagery of the human body in motion, explore the limitlessness of our physical capacity, and offer a sense of choreographic investigation between camera and movement, regardless of the form.

Amongst these three days of screenings, you will see a huge variety of films from artists all around the globe including Australia, Philippines, Columbia, UK, and more!

PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY BY VENUE At SFU Woodward’s: Due to construction, the Hastings Street doors are currently blocked off. The building is only accessible via the Cordova Street Courtyard and can be accessed by a ramp outside the Woodward’s Westbank Atrium. The entrance to the ramp is across from JJ Bean Coffee, under the Stan Douglas Mural. Inside the building all venues are accessible by elevator. Wheelchair spots are limited, so please notify the Front of House Manager (FOH) as soon as you arrive at Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. Any usher or greeter at the door should be able to contact the FOH, who will then make your seating arrangements.

F-O-R-M has had some very exciting opportunities over 2017/18 to expand our networks nationally and internationally. We have partnered and presented screenings and events with Dancing on the Edge, Vancouver Art Gallery, New Blue Emerging Artist Festival in Toronto and more recently Body + Camera Festival in Chicago. I am so excited to be able to share F-O-R-M films with other networks and to expand our community through these programs.

It has been yet another incredibly inspiring year to be able to connect with so many creative and innovative artists creating in the realm of movement on screen. I am so excited to share this with you 32 films from 11 countries over this weekend.

A huge thank you everyone who has made this festival possible, but a very special thank you goes out to my colleagues and mentors - Kristina, Lisa and Josh who have supported the project since its inception. Thank you for continuing to believe in my vision and this project over the past three years, none of it would be possible without you!

My goal is to continue the momentum we have built over the past three years, to support artists and present new opportunities for creation. We believe that the body holds a unique ability to convey ideas in a powerful way, to tell stories, express identity, and reveal something that often cannot be put into words. Each year, we are moved by the creative and high-calibre work submitted, and how film and video allows these artists to reach out and connect. We are so happy to see F-O-R-M thrive and evolve, so that these diverse imaginations and perspectives from within our own community and across the globe can be shared and experienced by more of us.

Senior Colourist at Side Street Post, Jimmy Hsu developed his love of colour at a very young age when he began painting. He eventually found his passion in photography and film where he can “paint with light’. With his extensive background in photography and film editing, he brings the visions of Cinematographers and Directors to life. He believes colour conveys emotions, and adds a vital dimension to the art of storytelling.

Join F-O-R-M artists and staff for a movement and filmmaking jam before our opening screening! Facilitated by dance artist Ralph Escamillan, he will lead us through a group warm up, and then we will commence the open jam! Here is how it works: bring a camera, smartphone, dance moves and your flips and tricks! This is an open and public environment for artists of all ages to come together with their cameras and movement expertise/concepts, connect with fellow participants, collaborate and create on the spot.

Footage from this event will be put into a Dropbox folder for artists to access and will have 24 hours to create a 60 second film! Submit your creations by 5:00pm on September 14th and our jury will select one film to be featured before each of our screenings!

Meet us at the Lululemon Lab after our Opening Night Screening to chat about the films with some drinks, snacks, and more movement!

Join David Cooper and Sophia Wolfe as we play and explore movement of the body and movement of the camera together simultaneously. How do the two respond to one another? How do they connect and work together? We will start with a group warm up that will get us into our bodies followed by an opportunity to be the mover in front of the camera and the mover holding the camera.

Included in the evening will be an interactive installation created by Chimerik似不像 (Sammy Chien) and F-O-R-M Artistic Director, Sophia Wolfe. Create your own short movement video through FORMations RT. Participate by moving and grooving in this free form open jam. Pick up a camera, perform an idea and watch your footage being edited live and in real-time.

David will lead us through some basic camera knowledge as well as some camera handling tools and techniques, including using the Movi and together we will discover ways to capture and enhance moving bodies through video.

Cipher: Interactive Installation (Workshop Presentation) September 14th & 15th 2:00pm-4:00pm (feel free to stay as long as you wish during these times!)

Cipher is an Interactive Installation created by Brian Johnson and Company 605 that explores how communities might coalesce around issues or ideas, how they may acquire agency through this solidarity and how this process can subsequently propel new forms forward. The work is a double stream video that takes data from audience movement to generatively edit the two distinct but deeply connected dance films. It takes a looping form in re-imagining DJ Kool Herc’s vision of an infinite B-Boy dance battle. Movement on screen is reiterated in the place of exhibition as distinctions of audience and performer blur and modulate each other. The dialogue between embodied viewers and mediated bodies is reciprocal in terms of movement – and an exploration of this relationship is deeply encouraged throughout the work. Featuring dancers Bynh Ho and Maleek Washington and composer Matt Perry.

Comprising presentation and discussion, Johnson digs deep into the effects, strategies, challenges and rewards of harnessing digital tools in rendering movement on and off screen. This class will benefit film and video creators interested in interactive installation, artists interested in professional cinematography, and audiences looking to get behind the surface of finished works, to understand the practical and theoretical interactions of audiovisual composition in space.

Join us at Left of Main to converse, celebrate and dance with F-O-R-M’s artists, producers, audiences and volunteers of the festival! PatternNation will be curating this event in full colour and pattern effect. Bringing some of the elements from their F-O-R-M commissioned film TRIANGULATE alive. PatternNation interactive BLOBS created by Cydney Eva will fill the space for us all to play, projections by Bangalore based visual artist Brianna Klassen will be shown and South African rapper CostaBesta will be performing his track from the film and more.

We are in 2050, in a world where being human no longer means what we’re used to. The technological and biomedical advances of the last 30 years have changed the status of the body and redefined identities. Some humans have embraced technological advances, augmenting their bodies with artificial devices. Others have preferred to hybridize with other species, making organic and living material their own technology. Still others cherish and honour the original body, refusing any modification or lacking the means for enhancement. The web series Eve 2050 takes us to the heart of this amazing world through 5 episodes that follow Eve’s journey. The spaces we occupy morph and magnify our presence within these two roles. These spaces also unearth, tangle and deconstruct habitual, personal patterns and rhythms. The film experiments with this concept through a physical investigation of calculated precision contrasted with personal habit. Various perspectives and environments illustrates this dichotomy and works to reveal the intimacy in the epic.

Materiality sculpts how we think and view the world. Hierarchy of materiality imposes value or lack of value on both the natural and built world. What separates a pearl from a polystyrene ball? Objects are reflections of us, and the ones we choose to value are the ones that help us understand ourselves. These one-of-a-kind interpretations are a form of self-expression for both dancer and filmmaker who both react to the music and each other.

The first and very special installment of the #PhilippinesEdition, this collaboration was conceived during the opening night of Fringe Manila Festival. The brilliantly talented Ralph Escamilan traverses through the colorful Makati red light district with such confidence and grace to the insanely catchy RV Mendoza hit, “You Blew It.” Video produced by the uniquely talented Char Loro.

I exist when your hands create me. This dance video is part of an exploration of sign language and dance in the context of vindicating the linguistic and cultural rights of the deaf community as part of inclusion processes. One deaf dancer meets a hearing one and therefore gestures. Hands and touch become the main tools not only for communication but, to recognize the other, to create with each other. The use of animation helps to underline this idea and to focus on the beauty and poetics of touch, a sense that people with sensorial impairments know so well.

Galvanize is a short dance and poetry film. Shot in Leeds City Centre representing the diversity of the city, sending a message of positivity to the world. The film was made in response to the divisive fringes in society that we are all victims to, it is a rallying call to the masses. Made from support from Random Acts North in collaboration with Channel 4, with funding from Arts Council England.

The story of Xolani, who dances to release his troubled past. As a teenager, Xolani discovered that he was poisoned by his mother as a baby. This resulted in an operation, leaving a scar across his torso, and his removal from her care. An exploration of stillness, movement, and intimacy between three beings.

Unfolding is an exploration of the relationship between movement and stillness, solitude and proximity, and of the intimacies created during moments of silence.

Based on a framework inspired by still photography, this short film revolves around three subjects: two young men and an eight-year old girl. Structurally non-narrative, it follows the subjects’ personal ties around trust and physicality, all navigated through exercises of movement and connection.

GREY is about difference. Though the idea has a very strong, literal connection to the issues of racism and gender equality, the message behind GREY can apply to any situation where there are opposing worlds and ideas. Poet & theatre director Maya Wuytack explores the poetics of the speaking body and the language of senses. She creates a dialogue between language and what is older than language: the primal poetry of the skin. On this border between inner and outer worlds an intimate dance unfolds between the dream and the dreaming body. Together with dancer Mileen Borgonjon she creates a hypnotic physical score in which body and poetry merge. Taking the camera so close to the skin, the body 18

becomes universal. These ‘skinespheres’ reveal a moving abstraction of our human condition. Soaking the imagination to the underlying life forces, more pure and inexplicable than our everyday identities.

PatternNation welcomes you on the journey that is TRIANGULATE. Filmed within three cities: Durban, South Africa, Vancouver and Nanaimo Canada this film brought together 21 diverse artists between the two countries.

F-O-R-M’s Commissioning Fund is an exciting program offered by the festival for emerging artists. This year, we are delighted to have commissioned six new movement films from artists across Canada between the ages of 1931. Each artist received up to $2000, equipment credit and access to the facility at Cineworks in Vancouver and Charles St. Video in Toronto.

These resources all went towards the creation of brand new movement films which will be premiered in this screening!

The journey begins with the introverted self, the part of us that experiences solitude, intimacy and self-reflection. In the first scene vocalist Nipho Hurd brings us into nature with her track while dancers Lorin SoKool, Marisa Gold and Jason Bempong express and explore with PatternNation’s interactive soft blob sculptures.

This year’s artists worked towards complex, movement ideas and concepts that involve seeing movement through music, fashion, mirrors and speak to issues of race, gender, identity, age and decolonization.

Our creative compass takes us next to the extroverted self, the part of us that experiences social stimulation, attention and excitement. The extroverted self is expressed by Lex Lafoy’s track Sibaningi’la (Zulu) There are many of us (English). We celebrate community connection with the full Durban cast and Vancouver dance company Immigrant Lessons.

This voyage ends in exploring the creative self, the part of us that experiences innovation, exploration and originality. Set amidst PatternNation Murals, CostaBesta’s experimental track is danced by TJ Jali and choreographer Lorin SoKool in Durban, Marisa Gold and Jason Bempong (Immigrant Lessons) in Nanaiamo and performed

by CostaBesta in both cities. The introverted self, the extroverted self and the creative self complete the triangle that is TRIANGULATE. E_GO is an analysis of the dualistic nature of the ego mind and its role in shaping one’s E_GO is an analysis of the dualistic nature of the ego mind and its role in shaping one’s identity and perspective on oneself. Exploring the extremes and character attributes such as the superiority and inferiority complexes. In addition, the introduction of the interiority complex a term coined by Caroline Mchugh in her TEDxTalk, “The Art of Being Yourself.” A disposition in which describes the equilibrium between the two extremes of ego, a state of mind where you can truly be yourself. Pulling from Eric’s experiences in dealing with his own personal struggles in finding his own self-identity and ultimately as a dance artist the film utilizes mirrors as a visual representation of the different aspects of Eric’s ego. This will further the idea of self-reflection and create a medium for Eric to eventually find balance and interiority within himself.

Wave Hands Like Clouds Jennifer Su

As sunlight fills Grange Park on a weekday morning, building cranes cut across the sky while young professionals speed through the park’s paths on their way to work.

A small boombox projects the peaceful sounds of Tai Chi music, setting the pace for a group of lively seniors who meet for both exercise and friendship, always followed by breakfast together. At another corner, a young artist concentrates on moving chi throughout their body, demonstrating the knowledge passed down to them by their shifu, a Chinese medicine doctor. In the afternoon, a class in Scarborough works to improve their sword Tai Chi practice, the walls of their headquarters proudly displaying tournaments they have competed in. Back in Chinatown, a Taoist temple nestled on a residential street hosts evening classes where young volunteers lead participants from all walks of life. As outsiders, we are given a glimpse into how Tai Chi, as a spiritual and physical activity, takes form in different environments, among different bodies—all with their own unique interpretations. The powerful notion that Tai Chi can be done anywhere, by anyone, is embodied by the diverse community of practitioners featured in the film.

ALL THINGS GROW is the assemblage of found parts, that seem somewhat arbitrary, collaged together as a way to create a new whole. A half truth.

This film embraces the aesthetics of millennial tropes, the novelty of how we communicate, and why we are terribly nostalgic. How do we translate what we feel in our bodies? Into a material? Into a colour? A pattern? A sound? What does that look like online and “IRL”? Your influence is larger than a 640px x 640px square. HOW DO YOU PERFORM YOURSELF? HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that supported me and the production of ALL THINGS GROW this summer.
