Débil es la carne es la primera adaptación hollywoodense de una novela de autor afroamericano (el libro homónimo de Frank Yerby estuvo entre los más vendidos de 1940). No mucho de esta fuente terminó en la película: considerando las limitaciones de la época y del cine de estudios, no sorprende que los esclavos sean mayormente extras en este drama. Y aun así sus escenas demuestran la empatía genuina de Stahl al lidiar con la cuestión de la población negra por segunda vez en su carrera, después de La imitación de la vida. The Foxes of Harrow is the first Hollywood adaptation of a novel by an African American writer (Frank Yerby’s eponymous book was among 1940s’ best sellers). Not much of the source material of the novel ended up in the movie; considering the limitations of the times and commercial studio cinema, it is not surprising that the slaves are largely extras of this drama. And yet their scenes showcase Stahl’s genuine feeling of empathy as he directly deals with blackness for the second time in his career, after Imitation of Life. Conceived of as an echo of Gone with the Wind, this unrelenting film feels almost like a Greek tragedy, in which every character is enslaved: by their past, their personalities, or their unhappy marriages.
