Después de la monumental Hyenas, cuya realización le tomó siete años, Mambéty volvió al Senegal contemporáneo para abordar la historia de un artista musical llamado Marigo y sus intentos por desarrollar su carrera en un país sometido por la fuerte devaluación del franco cfa, que lo lleva a tener que evitar cruzarse con su casera, a la que le debe seis meses de alquiler. A la par del contexto real, las calles en Le Franc están llenas de personas deambulando, ganando apenas lo necesario para poder comer ese día, buscando la salvación en la lotería o intentando aprovechar el descuido de algún cliente en los comercios. Y, en esos escenarios, Marigo se mueve con la gracia, la destreza y el optimismo de los personajes que Mambéty supo delinear a través de su filmografía.

After the monumental Hyenas, which took seven years to film, Mambéty returned to contemporary Senegal to tell the story of a musician named Marigo and his attempts to further his career in a country su≠ering from a sharp devaluation in its currency, and to avoid his landlady to whom he owes six months’ rent. As it used to be at the time, the streets in Le Franc are full of people wandering around, trying to scrabble enough together to get something to eat, seeking salvation in lottery tickets or in the pockets of a careless shopper. Marigo sails through these scenes with a grace, skill and optimism that Mambéty captures expertly on film.
