The Look She is one of the most beautiful women in the world and a magnificent actress. From Visconti to Lars von Trier, from Woody Allen to François Ozon, from Liliana Cavani to Nagisa Oshima, Charlotte Rampling, by turns deadly or vulnerable, has intrigued numerous major filmmakers. It is a great honour to present her with the Excellence Award Moët & Chandon at the opening ceremony of the Festival del film Locarno, a fine start, and on British time (despite the Swiss national holiday) with the world première of a British thriller, The Sweeney starring Ray Winstone. There are worse – and less innocent – ways of inaugurating the 65th edition of Locarno than to invite an actress world renowned for her beautiful eyes and her mysterious look. She’s been nicknamed “The Look” as was Lauren Bacall before her. Are not Charlotte Rampling’s eyes the most splendid symbol
of the powers of fascination cinema and its artists exert over millions of viewers? If the eyes are a mirror of the soul, cinema is, like Stendhal’s definition of the novel, a mirror one takes along on the journey. At Locarno this journey looks more like numerous side roads than a single express highway. Cinema is a mirror filmmakers offer us, but it is also a window onto cultures, horizons and issues that are not necessarily our own. It is up to us to open our eyes and minds over the next eleven days. (Olivier Père)

Incontri ravvicinati del migliore tipo Finalmente il piacere di conversare di cinema con chi il cinema lo fa. Senza barriere divisorie. Sono infatti numerosi gli incontri e le tavole rotonde in programma, aperti a tutto il pubblico festivaliero con un gustosissimo, doppio appuntamento previsto per giovedì 2 agosto allo Spazio Cinema (Forum): la conversazione con l’attrice Charlotte Rampling – presentata dal Direttore artistico Olivier Père e fissata per le 10.30 – e quella con la regista Naomi Kawase, introdotta da Jean-Michel Frodon e programmata alle 13.30.
