Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival is produced on Kaurna Yarta. We respect First Nations people around Australia and acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the Adelaide Plains. We honour their spiritual relationship with their country and we do so in the spirit of reconciliation.

Artist Statement

With my interpretation of the OzAsia Festival artwork, I aimed to inspire and represent the emerging Asian Australian identity. To me, the presence of water holds significant importance in shaping the Australian landscape. It has been utilised by the traditional custodians of the land as a foundation for prosperity and growth. Water has also served as a symbol of welcome for migrant families from various origins, while holding deep connotations of life and purity within Asian cultures. The dynamic movement of water is a key element that I sought to capture in the vibrant energy of my artwork.

In my artistic practice, I often draw inspiration from traditional Chinese design, which I then contemporise to convey a fresh perspective. In this artwork, I chose to portray South Australia’s Leafy Sea Dragon as a means of bridging two cultures: the traditional dragon symbolising luck and strength, and a version of the creature that is indigenous to Australia. The modern Asian Australian identity is inherently global and optimistic. To reflect this, I incorporated references to traditional Eastern medicine through the use of meridian points and lines. These lines and pathways mirror the layout of modern transportation maps, symbolising the endless and universal avenues to discovering one’s identity and achieving global representation.

OzAsia Festival has become a much-loved staple in South Australia’s annual program of arts and cultural festivals.

Growing and evolving year on year, OzAsia Festival showcases the best of Asian and Asian Australian culture through performance, art, literature, food and entertainment.

But it does even more than that: the festival marks springtime in Adelaide, bringing the city alive with culture and colour while celebrating our State’s multicultural community and strengthening our cultural ties with Asia through its pioneering programming. Our iconic riverside transforms into a bustling celebration of light, food and culture, and everyone is invited.

My congratulations and thanks to CEO & Artistic Director of Adelaide Festival Centre, Douglas Gautier AM, Artistic Director Annette Shun Wah and Executive Producer Joon-Yee Kwok for their outstanding programming and excellent facilitation of these important relationships.

On this important 50th anniversary of Adelaide Festival Centre, I extend my congratulations to all artists, staff and volunteers for an outstanding program that reflects a modern-day, culturally diverse Australia.

This year, the wonderful Moon Lantern Trail returns with new lanterns for us to enjoy. I am particularly looking forward to the new water lantern by Jaydenlee Tong which reflects the South Australian artist’s Aboriginal and Chinese heritage. I’m also delighted to see the growing number of South Australian Asian artists in the program, and of course, the return of both the Bubble Tea Garden and the Lucky Dumpling Market.

Artistic Director Annette Shun Wah again leads us to a greater understanding of Australian culture through her expertly selected program of works featuring Asian Australian artists.

The 50th Anniversary of Adelaide Festival Centre gives us pause to look both back and forward. Over the years we have followed a blueprint set out by the birth of this institution to guide our programming by hosting diverse cultural experiences that broaden our horizons. All South Australians should have access to the enjoyment of arts and culture, and we use the power that the arts has to connect, contemplate and further our own cultures through magnificent events such as OzAsia Festival.

It’s such a joy that for this, my third OzAsia Festival program, I’ve been able to re-connect in person with artists in our region. As a result, we’ve invited some stunning productions that are exciting audiences in Asia, while continuing to support new Asian Australian works and fertile artistic collaborations across Asia and Australia.

Reflecting the times, the themes of freedom, survival of endangered cultures and resilience are occupying the thoughts of many artists right now, providing profound and provocative works for the program.

I’m thrilled to present two remarkable contemporary dance works: Taiwan’s Bulareyaung Dance Company with tiaen tiamen Episode 1, a collaboration between celebrated choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava, pop star ABAO and fellow Paiwanese visual artist reretan pavavaljung. And Singapore’s leading contemporary dance company T.H.E (The Human Expression) explores the highly topical notion of freedom in Infinitely Closer. Meshing movement with technology, this immersive work invites you, the audience, to be in the same space as the dancers – in this case on the stage of Festival Theatre – to exercise your freedom of movement. It’s a rare opportunity for you to be part of the work.

Music and theatre combine to present some powerful experiences. Canadian composer Ngo Kong Kie brings the profoundly moving I Swallowed A Moon Made of Iron, inspired by the late Xu Lizhi, a star of China’s worker-poet literary movement. Australia’s Rainbow Chan explores the plight of the women of the Weitou people, the first settlers of Hong Kong, with a contemporary song cycle, The Bridal Lament. A supergroup of exceptional musicians led by Sunny Kim meditate on motherhood and migration in Mothertongue, Motherland 1988 is a musical and visual feast

of memory, history and nostalgia from musicians Dung Nguyen and Peter Knight with visual artist Phuong Ngo. And Saudara Sound System is hip hop Balinese gamelan from Joelistics, Komang and Gamelan DanAnda.

Of course there is standout theatre, including leading Chinese director Wang Chong’s Made in China 2.0 a collaboration with Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre that reveals Chong to be a delightful and charismatic performer. The singular talent that is Yumi Umiumare brings her epic solo piece Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI. Malaysia’s Five Arts Centre presents A Notional History which has been touring extensively through Asia and Europe, and the fabulous creation of New Zealand’s Indian Ink Theatre Company, the Guru of Chai, returns in a compelling new work, Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream

The irrepressible Special Comedy Comedy Special is back, together with a great line up on the Lucky Dumpling Market stage, a feast of writing and ideas in In Other Words, contemporary Asian cinema in association with Adelaide Film Festival, and stunning exhibitions at AGSA and in the Festival Theatre Galleries. Alongside your favourites – the Moon Lantern Trail, AnimeGO! and the Bubble Tea Garden this abundance of delights will keep us all nourished, inspired and connected. I’ll see you there!

Bulareyaung Dance Company

tiaen tiamen (Paiwan for “me and us”) is choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava’s act of rebellion. Spurning the constraints of a traditional creative process, Bulareyaung flings the doors wide open, allowing fellow young Paiwan artists singer songwriter ABAO and visual artist reretan pavavaljungto lead the way.

After a glittering career creating works for Taiwan’s Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and New York’s Martha Graham Dance Company, Bulareyaung has turned his focus closer to home.

Allow yourself to be swept up in the pulse as tiaen tiamen Episode 1 delves deep into the rhythm of the Paiwan identity, humming with the optimism of youth, radiant colour, psychedelic electronic beats and the fearless energy of the young dancers. Canadian composer and performer Njo Kong Kie transforms the poetry of Xu Lizhi into song, delivering a timely lament for our digital age. Xu toiled in a factory in Shenzhen, China, where he, along with countless others unseen and ignored, manufactured the electronic devices so ubiquitous now in our everyday lives. Xu’s profound poetry is both an indictment of exploitative labour practices, and a glimpse into his interior life: his hopes, dreams, and struggles under the unbearable weight of existence.

Combined with a rich tapestry of video imagery, Njo’s score for solo voice and piano delivers a contemplative landscape –and a powerful insistence of Xu’s humanity. This is a work about human dignity and economic injustice, each set against the other in a conflict as familiar as it is tragic. In the synthesis of the two artists, you will encounter a vital human document, an act of political witness, and, not least, a performance of great beauty.

This show was conceived as part of Joelistics' 2022 artist-in-residency with Gamelan DanAnda supported by the City of Darebin’s community grants program. Early development of collaboration between Joelistics, Gamelan DanAnda, and Balinese artists Yande King’s and Emon Bayem was funded by a Playking grant from Arts Centre Melbourne. 16

1988 is the point of arrival and the point of departure, the end of one journey and the start of another. Yet it is one story - Dung’s story of emigration to Australia from South Vietnam in 1988 to join his father Quí Văn Nguyễn - shared with you in fragments. Misaligned and cyclical, 1988 borrows from the memories of the Vietnamese people, but it is corrupted by a sense of nostalgia. It interweaves personal narratives, diverse music practices, history, and cultural legacies while seeking to understand how and why we come to occupy the spaces we find ourselves in.

Dung Nguyen (đàn tranh/đàn bầu) and Peter Knight (trumpet/electronics) compose an intricate sonic tapestry for a unique ensemble of six musicians including Minh Ha Patmore (đàn t’rưng), Vanessa Tomlinson (percussion), Helen Svoboda (bass/voice), and Erik Griswold (piano), each with their own distinct musical practices. The score gracefully entwines with the rhythmic clicks and whirrs of vintage slide projectors, displaying a series of evocative personal and archival images curated by artist Phuong Ngo.

The Bridal Lament

The Bridal Lament is an ambitious new performance and music project by award-winning vocalist, producer and multi-disciplinary artist Rainbow Chan 陳雋然. Drawing on her Weitou ancestry (first settlers of Hong Kong), the work reimagines a Weitou ritual known as the bridal lament, a public performance of grief in which a bride wept and sang in front of her family and friends. In this liminal space, brides expressed bitterness towards their arranged marriages and the prevailing patriarchal rule.

Conceived and structured as a song cycle, the work brings to life intergenerational and cross-cultural perspectives on diasporic experiences and the complex history of Hong Kong in an emotionally resonant and sumptuous audiovisual experience. Featuring a suite of new songs from Chan, The Bridal Lament pays homage to the Weitou ritual, bringing to life a dynamic world of projection, movement and colour.

Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI is an intimate and epic solo performance piece. It is a fusion of dance, text, and song, underscored by dynamic visual elements, a compelling original musical score, and of course - a tea ceremony.

Drawing inspiration from the historical Japanese female entertainer Izumo no Okuni, initiator of Kabuki theatre in early 1600s Japan, Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI is a visceral adventure - a transcendent feast for the senses.

At the height of her creative prowess, Yumi Umiumare, Australia’s leading Butoh artist, unearths precious sacred female powers all too often buried throughout history. Yumi’s channelling of the multifaceted Okuni (who was so powerful, yet fragile and complex) culminates in a powerhouse solo performance that refuses to be defined by genre. Furious, funny, wistful, strange, and wild, Buried TeaBowl – OKUNI will carry you on a bizarre, unruly and heartfelt journey as only Yumi Umiumare can.

A Notional History

In A Notional History, a performer, a journalist, and an activist excavate school textbooks, inherited memories, and video interviews of exiled revolutionaries – uncovering erasures, exclusions and questions around the Malayan Emergency. They investigate and speculate on the possible histories for a different Malaysia, intersecting the personal, the national, and the notional.

Directed by Mark Teh, with impassioned performances by artist/activist Fahmi Reza, musician Faiq Syazwan Kuhiri and journalist Rahmah Pauzi this documentary performance calls for wider perspectives on history.

A Notional History is a companion piece to Punk Protest Propaganda: The Political Art of Fahmi Reza. The captivating free exhibition is showing at Nexus Gallery, from Thursday 19th October to Sunday 5th November.

Truc Truong

With Kilkenny Primary School and Roma Mitchell Secondary College students

Have You Eaten? is an immersive art exhibition that invites you to consider your perfect picnic, favourite foods, and connections between culture and cuisine. This exhibition is a collaboration between leading contemporary artist Truc Truong, OzAsia Festival’s Artist in Schools, and young people from Kilkenny Primary School and Roma Mitchell Secondary College. Through a series of workshops, Truc and the students have created colourful artworks that thoughtfully reflect on their individual culinary experiences.

Based in Tarntanya/Adelaide, Truc utilises a mixture of assemblage, sculpture, installation and performance in her arts practice to explore Eastern and Western philosophy.

Drawing on personal and lived experiences, her work asks challenging questions about racism, belonging, and displacement. Have You Eaten? examines how food and cultural food experiences bring people together and make lasting memories.

Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) is Australia’s only performing arts company with a remit for producing, developing and enabling Asian Australian works and artists to reach main stages nationally. Through highly valued productions and initiatives, CAAP is regarded as a crucial leader and catalyst in the ongoing shift to greater cultural diversity and inclusiveness in the arts. Asian Australian Identities: Past, Present, Future Asian Australian Studies Research Network (AASRN)

The Asian Australian Studies Research Network (AASRN) brings the eighth Asian Australian Identities Conference (AAI8) to In Other Words, OzAsia Festival’s writing and ideas program. In partnership with the University of Adelaide, the conference celebrates 24 years of AASRN, established in 1999 as a platform for academics, community researchers, activists, and media and cultural workers to share experiences and ideas in the field of Asian Australian studies. The conference serves as an opportunity to reflect on the growth and development of Asian Australian identities/studies, evaluate the present standing, and envision its future trajectory.

Drop off locations are located on King William Road (Festival Theatre) and Festival Drive from Montefiore Road (Dunstan Playhouse, Space Theatre and Artspace). Parking is available around the riverbank precinct. For visits to the Festival Theatre, the closest car park is Festival Car Park (please be prepared for post-show congestion). For Dunstan Playhouse and Space Theatre, the nearest car park is Adelaide Convention Centre’s Riverbank car park. Both car parks are located on Festival Drive.
